Asheron's Call was a great game with a crappy marketing/advertizing team. World of Warcraft is a mediocre game with a great advertizing/marketing team.
See the shift in game development mentallity. Asheron's Call focused on making the game as fun as possible, while WoW focuses on how to maximize subscriptions/profit.
Also keep in mind that AC was developed by a no name upstart company (Turbine) with a very limited development budget. WoW has the publicity and resources of a major gaming company (Blizzard) as well as a huge budget.
Politics are for people who can't wield a battle axe.
Fighting solves everything.
Violence is the supreme authority from which all other authority derives.

No you havent.
You obviously never played AC, you obviously dont know what youre talking about, and you obviously need to make yourself stop looking so bad.
On another side note, the argument of "Well WoW has a huge subscriber base wheras AC has a miniscule amount so WoW is better" is tried, its used, and quite frankly, its wrong. Just becuase the majority of people are playing a game doesnt make it "right" in any sense. Just because people eat at Mcdonald's all the time doesnt mean that its healthy.
I see posts on gaming forums *everywhere* that mention about AC and on game forums such as AOC, WAR, POTBC you get people talking about how great AC1 is and was. Face it peeps, AC1 was a far superior game to WoW - it had a brilliant classless system, excellent PvP, minimal gear based play, rich lore and an awsome PvP server to boot. It actually requires skilled brains to play. Ask anyone who played AC, and they will tell you 90% of the time it was one of the best gaming experiences they ever had.
AC was built for fun, whereas WoW was built for money.
People cant say that about WoW. Its a no brainer - AC is superior in so many ways.
Originally posted by Xiaoki Here's some more worthless ratings for you: From Gamerankings.com Asheron's Call - 81.6%, Asheron's Call: Dark Majesty - 78.4%, Asheron's Call: Throne of Destiny - 58.5% Asheron's Call Average - 72.83% Ok, now let's see what WoW got, which you tout as being worse World of Warcraft - 91.8%, World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade - 90.6% World of Warcraft Average - 91.2% Well, look there, WoW is rated a lot better.
Here's where you are WRONG and where the ratings on mmorpg.com beat out other rating websites. mmorpg.com has a very intelligent rating system formula that weeds out all extreme ratings by a person. So on a lot of those other sites (such as the one you mention), there are obviously tons more WoW players rating that game. That means tons more "10" ratings for WoW, even though we all know that no game is perfect, and WoW certainly isn't a "10" either. The site you show, gamerankings DOES NOT weed out extreme 10 and 0 ratings as does the rating system here on mmorpg.com. THUS, because there are millions of WoW loving sheep voting it a 10 across the board, it's rating on those other sites will be much more skewed towards a higher score.
Furthermore, those of you who point out other reviews where a single reviewer gave a game a score can also be questioned. These reviewers gave a single one-person review of a BIG TIME Blizzard game. First of all, rating any Blizzard game lower then a 95% would probably instantly draw disrespect to the organization or magazine to which that reviewer worked for, especially with the huge number of fans WoW saw. Secondly, these reviewers were much more focused on reviewing the games graphics, sounds, etc and all the elements of a game and how smoothly it works then they were rating the game for it's fun factor. Also, almost none of these reviews were reviewed after enough game time to see how quickly the game becomes "boring" and how damn immature the gaming community is.
I would agree with the OP that you really need to READ the actual reviews from the players of both games... and read atleast like 20 from each game. In doing so, the OP is correct in the fact that you will read lots of "boring" type of reviews for WoW, and will see many more "best game ever" type of statements in the Asherons Call reviews. That DOES say something.
In the end, it is very hard to compare the two games. While both games are mmorpgs, they were built at two entirely different times in the mmorpg time line. I would agree whole-heartedly that Turbine built Asherons Call with "FUN" in mind and as the main goal of the game. AC was built with heart and soul, and with the player in mind. Blizzard obviously did not take this route and only built World of Warcraft as a money machine. They made it very simple and very mainstream with the only goal as to get as many players to play the game as quickly as possible. AC had/has little to no advertising, and it never has had much advertising. World of Warcraft was heavily advertised by the gigantic financial monster of Blizzard pouring millions just into the advertising department of the game. WoW is currently available at almost every major department store across America and acorss the world for that matter. AC has only been available as an online download for many years now and can sometimes be found in some of the most hardcore computer software stores. The availability of both games alone could be much of the reason for WoWs huge populations over that of AC.
Here's the real key however...
Take a good sample of players who have HONESTLY played both games.. AC and WoW. And I mean played AC back in its peak days (1999-2003) and who have played WoW at anytime since it launched. I could almost guarantee you that ATLEAST 90% of those would very easily and confidently tell you the superior game. And that game would not be World of Warcraft. I make this statement not from facts, and not from bias either. I make this statement on sheer confidence on AC's superiority over WoW in the "fun" department. I am confident that anyone here who has honestly played AC back in its peak time (1999-2003) would agree with me here.
Asherons Call is the superior game, and it wins easily if compared to WoW. Anyone who disagrees either didn't play AC in its peak years, is lying, or is a minority of the players who experienced AC in it's glory days.
WoW was built for money. AC was built for fun. That is the most accurate statement on this thread so far. It oozes TRUTH and that little thing called "hitting the nail on the head". And that is why AC will always be greater then WoW, regardless of the financial success or the number of players. Quality is always more important to me then Quantity.
The user ratings on this site mean very little as fans of games inflate the rating via alts and what not just as those who dislike a certain game will use the same tactics to deflate a game's score.
If we can start claiming that reviewers (who's PROFESSION is to critticaly look at video games) are "totally wrong", then we can also take a cheap shot at those "who played Asherons call at its peak time". AC was one of the first MMO's, and thus many of its players are new players. The first MMO is special for everyone, and one might remember all kinds of good things from it. However the reality is often different from that. My first MMORPG was Ragnarok Online, and I have really fond memories of it. I recently went back to check it out, and even though the gameplay didn't change all that much, in fact, at most points it didn't change at all, I really get this "Meh" feeling. its not really quite as good. For example, RO is highly repetive and its classes are VERY unbalanced. When I was an MMO newb, I didn't notice those things, but Now I do. I think the same goes for any MMO.
And again another person goes and defends AC. I am not surprised. I am actually seeing more and more people speak up these days about the classics (UO, AC, AO) than ever. Nice post Zax, I agree 100%. Kudos
EDIT: True Gameloading, that the idea of your first MMO is the fondest and therefore it may twist the person's view of the game, but that doesnt give an excuse as to why AC is superior, alot of people are able to look past the bias and look at the actual game mechanics and systems. AC has a superior system, no matter how you skew it - at least in many people's opinions. In addition, during the time AC came out, Im gonna reinforce what Zax and what other people said - MMO's were coming out at the time and had no standard as to which to hold themselves, and were more experimental than anything. The reviews coming from proffessionals for older games really cant be applied to newer generation games such as WoW. Its simply not realistic. Reviews for AC came out how long ago, 6 or 7, whereas reviews for WoW came out 1 or 2. Its like looking at the reviews for Doom 2 and then fast forwarding to Medal of Honor.

Here is yet another reason AC > WoW. The gaming community. This post is from a typical WoW player. Take a look at it, take a hard look at its maturity level. That is what you get in gross overload as a community while playing World of Warcraft.
This whole thread is silly. Weather one game is better or not is based purely on the individual. You may have scrutinized both games and ended up with the result that one game is better, but that doesn't mean others have to feel the same way. My opinion is that EQ, WoW, and UO were all better games then AC and I could lists reasons why, but they would only really count for me. The only thing we can really go by is how many people are playing the game. Right now WoW is very popular. EQ was very popular before it. That doesn't make them the best for everyone, but it seems to be the best for a lot of people.

Good point Gameloading. However, AC was not my first mmo. It was not my 2nd mmo. It was my third mmo. I played it after playing UO for 2 years and EQ for 4 months or so. Many of the people who love AC had previous experience with UO and/or EQ, trust me on that. And unlike you, when I go back and play UO, I don't get the "meh" feeling at all. All I wish is that there was a few more players, but actually the populations are starting to rise a little.

Do it here, do it on Yahoo game reviews, do it on any site where the players have a chance to voice their opinions of the said games. And you'll get the same result. Speaking of me fooling myself, if you want to be a mindless sheep and look only at the populations of any game and base it's quality and fun factors on that alone, then you are the one who is really fooling yourself.
Furthermore, I make my statements after playing BOTH games. I played WOW and got two characters, one level 38, one level 50. I also played AC during it's peak. So I make my statements on heavy experience of both games. Can YOU honestly say the same??? If not, then why are you even posting such attacks at my points? ... I mean really.
Yeah, you can look at ratings, and the rpice drop and conclude WOW is failing, or whatever it is your trying to state, or you can look at ther intellectual picture.
1. The ratings on this site are often entirely biased. People who like one game will give it a 10, and then look for games they dislike and give them a 0. Its a simple procedure. Rate everything above your favourite game 0 and give your favourite 10, and it doubles the speed it climbs the list.
2. If even 1/10th of the WoW population visited here and rated WoW it would hit number 1 easy. If that were to happen then I would bet you would be preaching about how ratings mean nothing, and they are just influenced by sheer numbers. You cannot point out things like this as evidence as they are easily manipulated and not static.
3. The drop in the sales price is simple marketing. Its like a role reversal, WoW was the original game, then the expansions is released. After a while the expansion becomes the big seller, and the original game just becomes a pre-requisite. I would assume when the next expansion is released WoW & TBC will be combined into a box-set, and TBC will be sold seperately as well for those who have not upgraded.

How many times do we have to tell you people that THIS SITE USES A COMPLEX RATING FORMULA THAT WEEDS OUT ALL 10 and 0 SCORES, LEAVING A MUCH MORE HONEST AND REFLECTIVE SCORE OF ANY RATED GAME ON THIS SITE.
But go on... Wow has higher populations then any other mmo, therefore it is the bestest mmo ever.

It can't be the best game ever because it's not on the top of MMORPG.com's rating list.
And if you were to take every review saying "Best game ever" for WoW and AC, WoW would have more "best game ever" reviews. WoW would also have more "boring game" reviews. Because WoW simply has more players.
No, I haven't played AC, so I obviously don't know how fun it is. But you can't just say "Ok, go look at these websites, but ignore all the professional reviews, and ignore all the player submitted rankings. ONLY look at the player submitted reviews. Then you'll see which is the best!" That's just silly.
Oh, and the reason I've never played it? I see no reason to. I never base my opinions on mere player opinions alone...every game will have its loyal "THIS IS THE BEST GAME EVER" followers, and they're simply not worth listening to because then every game would be the best game ever. I look at professional reviews, and reviews of my personal gaming friends. None of the profesional reviews say anything that makes me want to play it, and I only have one or two friends who've played it, and they've never urged me on to try it.
I'm not going to spend any more time in this thread, so I'll just end with this:
Professional game reviewers are more reliable than player-submitted opinions. You can't just downplay the professionals just because you disagree with them, or because you think there's some conspiracy that they're paid by Blizzard to give its games high scores or such nonsense.
Personally I think pre-CU SWG was better than WoW. And I could throw a bunch of "BEST GAME EVER" reviews in your face to support my opinion. That's what was best for me. And apparently AC was the best for you. I'm not going to come here and say "Your opinion is wrong." And I have no qualms with you thinking AC was the best game ever. But you can't take your own personal opinion and use that to disqualify everyone else who disagrees with you.

It's not that we think it's the best mmo out there to date because of population it's because if you turn on your tv and hear a review on mmos on say G4 tv, you will be told by far WoW is still the best mmo out there. It's where everyone says to go. Mainly because it's noobie friendly, has a great community IF and only IF you look for a good server. Do some research before you play, look for a good server or mainly try to get your friends to play with you. Has some great PvP for all who wish to take advange of everything offered. I used to play DAoC and Alterac Valley to me is like the RvR combat, but i just blizz would add more of those massive battlegrounds. Also if you are just looking for PVE just go to a PVE or RP server and there you go, problem solved. I'm in WoW for both PvP and PvE and i must say i am very satisfied. The only thing i can say about people saying the last expansion hit the reset button is...not really. Sure some of those quests made you drop those beloved epic you worked so hard for, but i mean i was in mine all the way until 66, well dropped my last one at around 67 and as much fun as i had on the way i honestly did not care i was losing it. For those of you who are worried that will happen again, don't be blizz has promised not to do that again in the next expansion and also have said there will be no new level cap. I wish i had the article, but if you look in google you can find it i'm sure.
I'm not saying WoW is for everyone, but for right now IMHO there is not another game out there that has used the exact right formula for an mmo. Before WoW it was EQ and DAoC for me and even then there were people saying the exact same thing everyone is saying about WoW. I don't understand why there always have to be an argument because really it's up to you what you play.
I'm done. Trying to agrue or point out how great Asheron's Call is/was to a bunch of WoW fanbois who have never even played AC is like trying to tell a bunch of 2 year olds that green eggs and ham really is just as good as the eggs and ham they are used to. It's pointless. They refuse to read/listen to common sense, refuse to read a handful of player reviews, refuse to try the game themselves and continue to argue that WOW is a million times better even though they don't even have any experience with what they argue. If they don't have any experience with AC, then how the hell can they slam it, laugh at it, or mindlessly say it sucks just because of its low populations?
I give up. Pointless argument.
Wow wins. AC sucks. WoW is the bestest ever. AC blows chunks and always has.

So I guess now I can go off saying that Guild Wars is superior to AC, EQ2 is superior to AC, UO is superior to AC, LOTRO is superior to AC...etc. Because that's what it says on MMORPG.com, and the world revolves around MMORPG.com.

The only thing I got out of reading your paragraphs of propaganda is that you like AC better than WoW. That's fine, that's what you like. I'll accept it.
Wow, its seems that youre against the whole "I'm going to try to convince people that maybe this game is superior to others" thing that happens on these forums. Hey...what did I just say. These are forums, right? Oh yeah...we're supposed to do that stuff.
He isnt saying your opinion "is wrong" go look back at his posts. He's simply stating the facts that he thinks is true, and stating his own opinio, and trying to back it up with some facts and explainations as to why he thinks its a great game. If you dont like people explaining and sharing their opinions then stay off forums all together. No, dont use the whole "oh no you think youre superior to everyone, so what you say is complete BS" thats a strategy used over and over and it doesnt work. He was simply stating what he thought was best. Where did he say that "everyone is wrong and I'm right?" wow, i never seen such blatant disregard and bias while reading a post. Good job. These forums are for discussion, and thats what Zax is doing, but youre having trouble replying, half the time youre going off ranting and whining about how hes "imposing his opinions". Hes really just sharing what he thinks with everyone else.
What, you dont like that? Then get off these forums, thats what discussion boards are for.
Gotcha.

If they are going to weed out 10's and 0's then whats the point in having those options available? Obviously if someone is flagged as entirely abusing the system I expect they will. Its funny that you assume im saying WoW is the greatest game of all time because that way you can label me a "fanboi" and try to convince people to dismiss my opinion.
I have played WoW, and think its "ok" and havent tried AC at all. Thankfully, my opinion and statement are not based on either of these, I was just pointing out the fact that the OP's "evidence" as to why AC beats WoW isn't really conclusive to anything. WoW has the highest population, and therefore could easily force the WoW rating up if it wanted to. The fact the price dropped as well doesn't affect how good the game is.
The fact people try to argue that one game is better than another is laughable. There are people out there that actually like games like "Dark and Light." If you think that AC is the best thing since sliced bread, then thats great for you, im glad you enjoy it. 8.5million people are enjoying WoW thats great, and their enjoyment is in no way affecting your gameplay experiance on AC.
People like the OP and many others need to realise they don't have to set out to defend their game and try to prove its better than something else, all they need to do is enjoy it and have fun. The Majority hate vanguard, but I bought it cos it was cheap, and I enjoy it. Sure its not as popular as WoW, but I couldn't care less.
Yet again: The amount of people voting on mmorpg.com isn't really a good standard as to what is good or not, as
a) There's very few voters b) There's TONS of bias c) The vast majority of the people who have opinions (Read: Those who're not trolls/flamers/kids) don't EVER go to sites like this, they're busy playing.
So, discuss all you want, you're still all wrong.
Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW... It all sucked.
Originally posted by radlin 8.2 overall rating vs 8.1 overall rating. I'm speaking ofcourse about Asherons Call's ratings on this site vs that of World of Warcraft. Now a difference of .1 isn't much you say. But it is actually quite an achievement for the old timer Asherons Call. World of Warcraft is barely 2 and half years old. Asheron's Call is now almost 8 years old. World of Warcraft represents the king of the money in the mmo market today, but is obviously not the king of the highest ratings by mmo players. Blablablabla..
You're so full of shit, I don't even know where to begin.
Comments
AC wasn't even the most popular game of it's time. UO, EQ, and DAOC all were more popular with EQ being the most popular.

Asherons call.... AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH..... *eyes well up* AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH omg *breathes deeply and steadily to control the laughter* AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
omg omg omg i forgot about that game.... if asherons call were a movie it would be 'Hawk the Slayer'.... seriously Im crying with laughter at the mear thought of Asherons call. Its like a good joke/ something funny that you remember an hour, a day , a week later and you just laugh with your eyes welling up. Then of course people think youre nuts when they ask you "whats so funny?" and you say "Asheron's call" with tears rolling down your eyes. "Err ok what the hell is Asherons call?" ..... AHAHAHAHAHA *crying with laughter* "yes i know.... What the hell is Asherons call.... oh thats so true".
ps. AHAHAHAHAHAHA
pps. if you dont know what hawk the slayer is... please if u can find the intro to it... watch it .. it will have you in tears... the music is so ghey.
And yes, I feel i have really added to this pointless post.

Its like looking at the reviews for Doom 2 and then fast forwarding to Medal of Honor.
yea clearly wow is in trouble and the threat of ac is to big to ignore.hhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaa!
just another in a long line of wow haters wow sucks, wow is dying , blah, blah , blah give it up already cry baby
Here is yet another reason AC > WoW. The gaming community. This post is from a typical WoW player. Take a look at it, take a hard look at its maturity level. That is what you get in gross overload as a community while playing World of Warcraft.
Enough said there.

Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7

And that is why AC will always be greater then WoW, regardless of the financial success or the number of players. Quality is always more important to me then Quantity.
So I guess now I can go off saying that Guild Wars is superior to AC, EQ2 is superior to AC, UO is superior to AC, LOTRO is superior to AC...etc. Because that's what it says on MMORPG.com, and the world revolves around MMORPG.com.
I like how you think you're so much superior to everyone else. If someone comes along and says they like WoW more than AC...well THEIR OPINION IS WRONG! But I'm right, so you should listen to me.
The only thing I got out of reading your paragraphs of propaganda is that you like AC better than WoW. That's fine, that's what you like. I'll accept it. I'm not going to downplay your opinion, though I may disagree with it. You can try to reason why thousands of other people are wrong, why people who love a game don't mater, and why professional game reviewers don't matter, but the only person you're fooling is yourself.
...Go and read a few of the reviews from other players for both games. Do it here, do it on Yahoo game reviews, do it on any site where the players have a chance to voice their opinions of the said games. And you'll get the same result. Many, many statements such as "best mmo gaming experience ever!" for Asherons Call, and many, many statements such as "Simple and boring" for World of Warcraft. That kind of PLAYER feedback is not "me".
If not, then why are you even posting? ... I mean really.

LOL. I finally found it folks!
Living PROOF that Asheron's Call is better then World of Warcraft!!
HEHEHE. I DID find this very amusing. I think this guy feels a little frustration as well as to WoW's numbers and success -vs- Asheron's Call:
Check it out... very funny and entertaining (yes even if you love WOW, heh)
watch this video of a frustrated Asherons Call Darktide (PvP server) player!
Enjoy!
(and yes, that's my PROOF that AC>WOW damn it)

This is better than this, here goes there.
Yet again: The amount of people voting on mmorpg.com isn't really a good standard as to what is good or not,
as
a) There's very few voters
b) There's TONS of bias
c) The vast majority of the people who have opinions (Read: Those who're not trolls/flamers/kids) don't EVER go to sites like this, they're busy playing.
So, discuss all you want, you're still all wrong.
Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...
It all sucked.
You're so full of shit, I don't even know where to begin.
