HD-DVD penetration is not a con for the 360. At any time, they could switch to blu-ray if it becomes the dominant playform because it is an attachment. Now the PS3... Their in trouble if Blu-ray fails.
And those people who frown at the idea of a MMO on consoles, have you ever truly played the 360? Not saying you haven't, but I suspect some haven't. Their graphics are just as good as PC's considering EVERYONE plays the game the way it was intended, unlike the MMO's on PC who have requirements to be met.
I believe a MMO on it will be a hit. But we'll just wait and see with Age of Conan. The 360 has just as much potential as the PC for MMO's
Oh and about the PS3... IT does not hold the most exclusives... That goes to the Wii. And the 360 has more also.
Btw, for GRAND THEFT AUTO IV --ALL-- online content and updates will be for Xbox 360 LIVE only. If you want the online content and updates for Grand Theft Auto IV, it is exclusively for Xbox 360 Live. It will be available for Xbox 360 on DAY ONE as well. PS3 will not have online updates or online content.
It is something to consider, because it is my all-time favorite game for the console. Well, maybe Resident Evil 1 was.
Edit: Btw, as the person above me said, the Xbox 360 has graphics just as good if not better than the PC. I have one of the best if not the best consumer graphics card (gtx 8800) on the PC I am typing this message to you.
One thing I don't like about Microsoft Xbox Live is that they pretty much STRONG ARM you into subscribing at their gold membership ($50 a year) in order to recieve the (supposedly) FREE content updates that the developers wants to share with their loyal gamers. In fact there's an article I read before that interviewed a major developer/publisher who says that Microsoft pretty much FORCED them to charge Microsoft points for the (supposedly) free stuff that they want to give to their customers that bought their games, in the end they had to abide by the rules setup by Microsoft so they charge a minimum amount of points for these (supposedly) free content. I recently cancelled my Xbox live gold membership and guess what, you pretty much lose 80% of the "EXCLUSIVE GOLD MEMBERS ONLY" content. You can't play multiplayer games on MOST games either using a silver membership. Example: You're required to have gold membership to play the DEMO online version of Phantasy Star Universe. The only stuff that are free as a silver member (non-paying member) are the game trailers. Everything else requires Microsoft points (pay pay pay) or only Exclusive for gold members.
I am betting that most of these upcoming mmorpgs for Xbox 360 on XBL is gonna require XBL gold membership to play and you have to factor that in on the monthly cost.
Right now I'm a supporter for Playstation Online Network which guarantees that there won't ever be any paid membership required for their members to use the network's services (multiplayer).
I recently got an Xbox 360. It is awesome. It is far better than I even imagined it would be. I also play Xbox 360 Live, and I am starting to enjoy this online gaming more than the MMORPGs; although I like Vanguard's depth.
Any thoughts on an Xbox 360 Live MMO?
Just curious, but why do you think an MMO would be better just becuase of the hardware?
I could see that there is potentially more customers for an MMO on consoles, but other than that I don't see the advantage.
-------------------------------- Desktop - AMD 8450 Tri Core, 3 gigs of DDR2 800 RAM, ATI HD 3200 Graphics, Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit Laptop (Dell Latitude E6400) - Intel P8400, 2 GIGs of RAM, Intel X4500, Windows XP Professional
Just curious, but why do you think an MMO would be better just becuase of the hardware? I could see that there is potentially more customers for an MMO on consoles, but other than that I don't see the advantage.
I would think that a console MMO would have fewer exploiters, hackers, and people with e-z-mode UIs.
I doubt that any games that aren't already slated to come out for the 360 will come. Why? The time it takes to make a new game is the same amount of time it takes to make a new console. So what have you done? Shot yourself in the foot before the game is released. Also to make it so that people can't just edit their game data easily is to have a middle person like FFXI does. For example...
Monster Hunter has a large amount of dupers as hackers can edit the save file data and give themselves good items. Of course they get banned if caught but it's hard to always do that. One thing that could be done is give every possession in the game a different serial. So... If there is an item called "Iron Axe" or whatever it would be...
Now if there was two of them with the same serial it could set of a flag. But this is useless tech talk that is made so you think I actually know something.
I have played quite a bit on the 360 and thought some of the games where pretty good.. but they would be much better if developed for the pc..
tho there is a lot of cash in the console market at the moment so a lot fo quality games will be developed for them.
Still the pc will always be here and will out live al lthe consoles...
As for a mmorpg on a console.. year cool but it would have to be limited with hot keys and such as the controllers only have a certain amount of buttons..
from a development standpoint consoles are very attractive as it takes compatibility qa and the numerous hours of programming time that is usually spent in the compatibility department on the pc. from making sure all the drivers work, to spending countless hours writing how to's for your technical support and customer service departments and then spending time with the middle managers in support hammering out a policy for the support staff to use.
a console will never have to face that challenge. not to mention, taking that kind of work out of a development budget is shaving off at least 5 million in a games development lifespan pre launch in 2007.
anandtech did a review recently, comparing directx 9 vs directx 10 performance. for those of you unfamailiar with anand la shimpi, hes probably one of the most technically proficient and well spoken tech evangelists in the world today. Anyway, what his sites review found was that using the biggest intel cpu and baddest dx10 video card in todays latest dx10 games (call of juarez and lost planet) performance was severely lacking. mind you those two games have all the same effects on the 360 and both run smooth as silk on it.
now you might be wondering why the 360 dispite specs like 5mb ram for video alone can be faster than your core 2 duo with 4 gigs of ram. its simple. The 360 has a very streamlined small operating system. It doesnt have megabytes of information for storing huge databases, web browsing, etc.. not to mention the hardware is a risc powerpc chip and the video is imbedded dram (meaning the ram for the video card is actually inside of the video chip itself. which means there is virtually zero latancy when video instructions and textures are processed by the video chip. i.e. its holy crap fast.
live is a very slick interface. it should be noted that there is also now live for windows and one of the things microsoft is hoping for in the future is interoperability between windows live games and xbox live games.
but before any of that makes any sense, nvidia and ati both have a huge job ahead of themselves. with the numbers those cards are putting out on 6000.00 pc's in todays directx 10 games. you might be lucky to see post 40 fps dx 10 games. lucky....
an xbox 360 will do that without breaking a sweat, usually at 60 frames per second for about 150 bucks used. which wouldnt by itself buy you a motherboard, let alone the ram or video card in that 6000.00 gaming beast built for dx 10
is it possible consoles could take over gaming? very. but its way too early to say for sure. things sure arent looking good for the pc, ill say that much. you can thank ati and nvidia for that one thought. their dx10 hardware both of them, suck it hard at the thing they were built for directx 10.
just thought id give you all a lil perspective.
Games i'm playing right now...
"In short, I thought NGE was a very bad idea" - Raph Koster talking about NGE on his blog at raphkoster.com
- No HDMI support unless you buy the Elite version.
- Playing multiplayer games require you to be subscribed to Xbox Live gold for around $50 bucks a year.
- Online store allows direct games/movies/music download.
- Currently has better game selection.
- Has less exclusive titles (Title exclusivity seems to be at the end).
- XNA is easier to develop for.
- No built in wireless support, but available as option.
- HD-DVD have only limited market penetration.
- Has better 3D graphics rendering architecture and hardware esp with better pixel shaders.
- Supports upgradeable hard drive.
- Supports bluetooth 2.0
- Supports limited backward compatibility and (automatic) upscaler for Xbox games but not DVD. PS3
- Supports HDMI at 480p/720p/1080i/1080p natively.
- Sony Online Network and @Home allows you to play multiplayer games for FREE.
- Online store allows direct games/movies/music download.
- Low number of released games for now but this will soon change as more next generation games start to mature.
- Holds the most number of exclusive titles (Trends seems to be ending for exclusivity of titles).
- PS3 game development has stricter development guidelines ensuring future compatibility
- Build-in Wireless connection for Wi-Fi. (Supports WPA but not WPA2 encryption).
- Blu-ray DVD seems to be the preferred standard by major labels.
- Has more numbers of PPE or raw processing power.
- Supports upgradeable hard drive.
- Supports bluetooth 2.0
- Supports limited backward compatiblity and (adjustable) upscaler for PS1/PS2 games and DVDs. Yes both are good machines, 2008 and 2009 will see a fierce competition between the two giants PS3 and Xbox360 and will be a very interesting 2 years for us gamers as a lot of next generation titles will begin to mature. PS3 may have suffered bad publicity from the onset but Sony are by no means far from being out. It seems the past trend of holding exclusive titles are finally at a decline as publishers begin to publish games for multiple platforms. This is good for us gamers but bad for Sony. Still there are many future battles to be fought by these 2 giants and the war hasn't even really started yet.
Xbox 360:
HDMI is rumored for the upcoming 65nm 360.
And DvDs get upscaled to at least 720p. Maybe higher now.

Hi i use to have a xbox 360 i got fed up of the bad bugs it has like freezeing dureing gameing and the green light turning red and desideing not to work, plus the game performance isent very good i get better on my pc plus you have to clean the cash system every so oftern. i played motoGP and the fps was totaly awful, plus i couldent get gold acount due to not haveing a credticard and the shops stoppped selling the top up cards. now the PS3 i got after but i totaly love the machine so much you can use a wireless bluetooth mouse and keyboard and comes with HDD as standered and in my country you only can get the 60GB version so i enjoy that and you upgrade it only takes about 5 mins and it will use any laptop Sata HDD so you basicly saveing alot of money. The games so far are pritty smooth no slowness at all and it does play every psx and ps2 games unlike 360 you can only play like 10% of the old xbox games and i use the latest LG Hd tv and i get superb picture even from ps2 games, plus online is totaly free and to buy content like games from the online service you can use any bank card and i think future mmo's on ps3 will rock like everquest 3 and littlebigplanet and home so microsoft beat that .

I doubt you will have the same computer and all of the fixin's 20 years from now.
Putting it simply the Xbox 360 is pretty much a PC wrapped in a shiny case. Saying that the PC will outlive the console is crazy since as they make better PC's, they will likewise make better consoles.
so, when do you think we will have ONE game that will able players from different consoles (PS3,Xbox360,PC,Wii?) to play in ONE massive game world... VMMO - Very Massive Multiplayer Online

The Xbox 360 is much more stable now. It was an overheating problem that has gotten better. And that should all be resolved in with the upcoming 65nm models. And you have a 3 year warranty now anyways. You shouldn't have to clear your cache but every 3-6 months. And MotoGP was a really buggy game when it released. Better now after a patch. Can't blame that on the console though. I would suggest everyone to wait for the 65nm redesigned release. You can also sign up with most bank cards for live . You can use it to re up your game points also. The point cards and 13 month subscription cards have always been in stores. They were in short supply for a little bit a year or so ago. And WalMart stopped carrying the 13 month subscription cards for 6 months or so around the same time.

No problem and I think you will be waiting a very long time for a game that spans all the platforms. You have 360 and PC being thrown into the same worlds now. Surely the PS3 will follow and be cross platform with the PC.
PS. All my PS3 is really used for is Folding. MMOs I play on the PC and everything else on my 360. I need Lair to release so my PS3 can be useful to me.....

True Fantasy Live Online and it was for the Xbox and needed to get the axe.
Check out "XNA", I believe it to be the future of game development. Microsoft definetly had their thinking cap on with this one. You can create games on your PC using the C# programming language and the XNA software development kit (SDK). You can then port them to the XBOX 360 directly, no altering of the code. The current package came out in December and a pro kit is to be released this year. I've been learning C# with Visual C# express and XNA (Both FREE downloads from microsoft)...yes I said free. I am absolutely amazed at the capabilities of this package. Check out the links and videos below, they explain it better than I can. It is pretty new, as time progresses I'm sure we will see MMO games coming out using XNA for both windows and the 360. REFERENCE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_XNA http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/xna/default.aspx
I heard of XNA a long time ago, Microsoft is def taken a step towards the future with integration of Vista, XBOX360, this whole XNA design package, and I'm sure they got even more in the works for the future....
The best would be if it didn't matter if you played on your XBOX360 or Vista PC
But I miss True Fantasy Live Online, almost as much as I miss UO-2 and UXO. Why do the cancel the good ones?
Yes an MMORPG for the x-box Live would be great... however I don't think it will work very well if you have to pay for x-box live and for a monthly fee for the game. If that were the case you'd be paying for X-Box live (about 50 dollars a year) this mmorpg (probably still have to pay the 60 dollars to buy the cd) and then pay a subscription fee (probably 10 bucks or so). Not to mention the big thing about x-box live is buying new content and I assure you any MMORPG on x-box live would take advantage of this. An MMORPG for the x-box could prove to be quite expensive. Let's hope they won't do it that way...

What I know:
I have a PC to about 1k dollars.
I would rather play on my 360, because I like the controller better, and the games a more temptating.
Also, I have a higher FPS and no lag at all.
I still play a teeny tiny bit on my PC, but thats just CS, wich I can get for the Xbox too.
Also, the 360 has some Dx10 thingys and some Dx9 thingys in the graphics card, so it's kind of a mix.
But in the end, it all comes down to playstyle.
thanks for the list and breakdown cheeba..
so, when do you think we will have ONE game that will able players from different consoles (PS3,Xbox360,PC,Wii?) to play in ONE massive game world... VMMO - Very Massive Multiplayer Online
MyBrute = addicting mini online game!

Wasn't there supposed to be an mmo for the 360 that got cancelled? What was it? Endless...saga...true fantasy...it was something like that. Can someone help me out here?

Curt teh Juggler: our graduation ceremony was today, and right when some gamer nerd got his diploma, someone in the audience played the zelda "get item" music and he did the zelda spin-hold-out-item stance

True Fantasy Live Online and it was for the Xbox and needed to get the axe.

The best would be if it didn't matter if you played on your XBOX360 or Vista PC
But I miss True Fantasy Live Online, almost as much as I miss UO-2 and UXO. Why do the cancel the good ones?
age of conan will be on xbox 360 live some time next year, just wait for that
But we all know, Huxley's gonna pwn them all!
Well , NCSoft is working for Sony now.
Thats might be a hint for a upcoming PS3 MMO? :O
Oh well , i dunno if a xbox live mmo would own , fees for xbox live+fees for mmo? Bit expensiv imo.
Nope, like in FFXI, you don't need to pay both...
