Save Stargate Atlantis?

Hmm it aint SG1 but it looks like Atlantis will be under review this year to see if they'll make a "Season 5" or end it with season 4......

What's this mean to us?   SG1 is already gone... relegated to "Made for DVD" movies (read: low budget movie, high budget TV show).  Atlantis may not be far behind if we, the fans, don't do something about it.....

Atlantis returns to SCI FI in September

The fourth season of Stargate Atlantis will make it U.S. premiere this September, SCI FI Channel announced yesterday.

Amanda Tapping will join the regular cast as the newly promoted Colonel Samantha Carter, as Torri Higginson ("Elizabeth Weir") departs. Firefly's Jewel Staite will also appear as a recurring character throughout Season Four.

With filming on the fourth season wrapping in early October, a decision about the show's renewal for a fifth year must be made quickly by SCI FI. The decision will be based in part on Season Three's ratings performance, but the September premiere means that the network -- should it decide to wait until the fall to make its final decision -- will also get to see the ratings numbers for the first few episodes of the season.

It is the first time in its 10-year history that the Stargate franchise will air new episodes during the busy and competitive fall season.

There is no news yet on whether SCI FI will give fans the first world premiere of Season Four, or if broadcasters in Canada or the U.K. might beat them to the punch again. The fact that the second half of Season Three had aired months before in Canada (and was therefore available online) is widely regarded as one factor in the show's ratings drop in the United States.

It's been announced by Sci-Fi that they plan to air the first half of season 5 starting in september, which is heavy competition.  If we, the fans, care to make sure there IS a season 5 of Atlantis we need to watch, rather than Tivo, the episodes.  (Personally I plan to Tivo them anyway but will have the TV set to switch to sci-fi during the show and switch to another channel afterwards so that it looks to the nielson ratings like I actually watched it live, commercials and all).

But the bottom line is that if all we do is tivo to burn past the commercials then Atlantis will likely get cancelled just like SG1 did.

Know this is off-topic but figured folks here would care :)

Even if you tivo it you still are technically watching it. You get the show and its commercials so therefore your part of the viewing public.

Long ago someone made a movie called Stargate starring Kurt Russell, and it was pretty good.

Nothing good has ever followed it and I don't miss any of the TV shows nor am I interested in the upcoming MMORPG....

I mean, c'mon, the SG 1 team was lead by McGyver?....

RIP is all I can say....

Now, for a good Sci-FI shows I enjoy Dr Who and Battlestar Galactica....

then why do you post here ? its kinda Hipocritical wouldn't you say, posting in a games forums although you don't want anything to do with it ..   and bad news .. they are cancelling BSG

  • EstrusEstrus Member Posts: 357

They aren't canceling BSG, it's "run it's course".

Dr Who?  Has there EVER been a more boring show?

To the OP... What difference does it make whether you TIVO it or not? Unless you have a Neilson box watch you watch and when you watch it are totally moot.

After canceling Farscape, I've lost all faith in the SciFI network. Don't they play wrestling shows now?

On the contrary, the movie Stargate was not that great. As for the Stargate series lets just say it's better than both Dr. Who and BSG combined. The show lived longer for a reason, while shows like BSG and Dr.Who are so boring it's no wonder they only last a few seasons.

I think I should point out that Dr. Who has been on the air (except for the 10 years it was off the air) since 1963. I actually like the new incarnation of The Doctor much better than the pre-1991 shows. As much as the older Who had great stories to tell, I really couldn't get past their shoe-string production value and so-so acting. The new Who still has the great stories, good acting and great production.

The people at BSG are smart enough to know that the story they have to tell is coming to an end and they are bowing out while they're still are at their prime. BSG has turned out to be one of my favorite shows of the past few years. They have shown that sci-fi dosen't have to be geared for kids or teens and can have some very adult themes and do it with style. I'll even go as far to say that BSG's writing is on par, if not better, that the best seasons of 24.

Don't misunderstand me. I loved (and miss) SG-1 and I'm starting to warm up to Atlantis too but to say that the Stargate series are better than Dr. Who AND BSG together is pushing it....severly.

I wouldn't go so far as to down BSG for Stargate... afterall.. BSG has more good lookin' girls than your grandfather can shake a stick at while you oggle absentmindedly at the side... I'd say they're par with each other.. but when major cast changes took Stargate, i'd have to say BSG took a marginal lead.

Besides, BSG is still on and kicking. Regardless of whether or not you're refering to the old 60's series or the new... its still the same name! lol

They all are great shows, it just sucks that they all go by so fast and then they are gone!! seems just like yesterday BSG was new, and look now it is going away!! damnit!!

I never got into Stargate Atlantis. I really have begun to resent the whole "Ancients were the most advanced race, but humans can beat things they couldn't" theme of Stargate. Also just about every Ancient is a snob and I don't understand why the other races (Asgard, Nox, etc) would even bother making an alliance with them.

I loved Stargate when it was on Showtime, but I felt that Sci-Fi killed it.

Do you actually have a meter installed by Nielsen to track your viewing?  From what I understand of the Nielsen Rating system, you need to have been selected and have equipment installed in your home to be counted in their study.  (Of course, they don't use raw numbers, they extrapolate the data so they don't need to monitor every TV, but you know what I mean.)

I have to admit.  I am a HUGE SG-1 fan but could never get in to Atlantis.  Would love to see SG-1 brought back or another entirely different series started but as far as Atlantis goes...

    -Currently looking forward to FFXIV

-Currently playing EvE and Global Agenda

All the hate on Stargate Atlantis is rediclous, look if you don't like it don't post here. And about 90% of the reasons you people say you hate the series for, are totally invalid, if you don't have the common sense to see that, I suggest you stop making yourself look stupid.

Personally, I loved Stargate Atlantis, and I'll do my best to watch the new season.

So so true it's now less science fiction and more drama. It's like an MTV in space.

    LOL

Personally I don't think the cable company relies on nielsen ratings to determine which airtime on which channels sells best.

But hey, I could be wrong :)

    But, more on topic:

Why are people who say they don't even like Stargate even viewing this forum.  If you don't like stargate why the hell would you be reading this forum?  It's a forum for a game based on Stargate FFS.  Go elsewhere if you don't like the shows.  Really... lol.

I neve rhad the privilage of watching any of the Stargate series.. although iv watched the Movie...i might go pick up a season on dvd to give it a shot.. i hear somewhat good reviews on SG1

  • DavynelordDavynelord Member Posts: 122

Well the only tv I watch these days is football, a little basketball and stargate...LOL   other than that, I don't watch tv a whole lot anymore.  I may catch a few other shows here and there but I'm too busy playing video games :D

I never liked dr. who, I like the old BSG, the new one isn't all that great to me...I can't get into it..but that's probably because I waited so long to watch that series and missed the beginning episode (working nights).     Farscape was a good show though I didn't like that they took the lead actor and put him on SG....he was cool but he had to fill jack's shoes and the humor he attempted wasn't that great...he was a little goofy to me.  In fact, I like when he's more serious acting rather than trying to be sarcastic and funny.

I will admit though, I will download episodes of SG Atlantis because for a while, I didn't have cable and it was the only I could watch the shows.   Cable and satellite bills are just damn ridiculous these days when most of the shows are crap.....how can you flip through nearly 200 channels of shows and 50% of them is full of crap, infomercials, movies that repeat 40 times per week (like there aren't 500 billion other movies that could be played) and recurring sports cast that you've seen 60 times....seriously, espn gets on my nerves show 800 repeats of sportscenter.....heck I haven't watched espn in 2 years now....again because I'm either working, playing video games or doing the family thing....not much time to watch the crappy reality shows, game shows and repeating movies......seriously, some movies get played so much, I know the lines word for word and can act out the actors body movements...LOL   That's when you know a movie has played too damn much on tv.

WIth my current sports package for the football season though, it allows me to watch sci-fi at least for the next 6 months before I cancel my subscription after the football season is over.    So I'll support Atlantis til then...but seriously, they need to pick up the shows story...a lot of stuff isn't making sense (which I'll reserve for later discussion).   It seems though that atlantis isn't doing much better than earth was for years and they supposed to have found all this great new technology....they need to start making atlantis more alive than SG-1.....afterall, atlantis is supposed to be using mostly ancients technology yet they still fair only as well as earth did...and in some ways earth (thanks to samantha carter) fairs a lot better than atlantis does.     I mean come on, they been there for 3 years and still haven't found a way to use ancient technology to upgrade their weapons.....please, how long must they use earthly weapons when the wraith are supposed to be so vastly superior yet P90's can put them down easy?

That's just a few things that's making atlantis not as good as SG-1 in my opinion.   The writers are trying to keep Atlantis story restricted by forcing earthly limitations but on a vastly superior planet with all kinds of mysteries to discover....yet all they found was some damn whales....LOL   Atlantis needs to move away from that SG-1 style story and go high tech because right now it just seems like they are still on earth to me....I don't get that feeling they are in another galaxy at all.....I mean atlantis should be flying by now especially after the replicators showed them how it's done.....So atlantis will continue to lose ratings until the writers decide to make atlantis it's own show instead of a mirror image of SG-1....time to break out some new concepts and break out of that SG-1 Mold.....afterall, if a show is gonna fail, why not go out trying to do something different rather than keep doing the same thing that has allowed a show to start dying anyway?

Wraith are not superior in technology, rather they are in numbers. They're the stargate equal to starcraft's zerg.

Atlantis is in space by the end of season 3.

Stargate Atlantis is great. Not as good as early SG-1 but way better than later SG-1. Have to say I enjoyed SG Atlantis more than SG-1 seasons 8-10
