Hi all, just some speculation here, and having a bit of fun. We all have our favorite IPs, which would you like turned into a MMORPG, and if ya want expand on what the mmorpg would have, i.e. sandbox elements, skill based, level based, quests, etc.
Mine are the following:
Wheel of Time (book series by Robert Jordan) SO much lore to use, very large world, combining EQ2 and WoW and FFXI systems.
Sword of Truth (book series by Terry Goodkind) could be a more action oriented game, with tons of mmorpg elements.
Firefly (although I hear they are working on this one)
Warhammer 40,000 (another possible in the works?)
Forgotten Realms (with the likes of Icewind Dale and an extreme amount of books to use as lore this could be awesome, as long as it isn't like D&D Online in anyway)
Dragonlance (same as above, but different company different feel)
Dune (book series by Frank Herbert) scifi all the way, I know lots are chomping at the bit for a scifi mmorpg.
Well, that's my top IPs minus a few that are already mmorpgs or are being made (i.e. Star Trek and Star Wars) even though they could visit these 2 again and make even better mmorpgs.

Blade ftw!
Shadowrun - aint gonna happen tho, unless M$ sells the license to someone who sees the potential of the IP as an MMO.
Id like to see a MMO based on Battletech / Mechwarrior in a real sandbox environment. players designing their own mechs and facilities and fighting in pvp for control of resources and military outposts, if done right, would be the only MMO I'd ever need
And id have to agree with the person who said there are too many fantasy MMO's. Well not really too many, but too few of every other genre. Im all for variety, even within a genre.
yah Warhammer 40k is in production.
Really, except for the first two, I don't really want to see IP in MMO's. They always seem to make crap games and just use the name to suck in the fans.

It would be cool to see a Dune MMORPG. The Sword of Truth and Wheel of Time, both good series, would be difficult to make into an MMORPG because there is such a huge focus on the main characters and not so much on the world. The main problem with the Dune franchise is that it takes place over thousands of years. What period would they use? Would players go against the Tyrant Leto II, or would it be set during the reign of Shadam IV or Paul Muad'dib?
Someone correct me on this if I'm wrong, I'm pulling this from some vague memories from years ago. But didn't the old D&D planeswalker stuff allow you to travel between the different worlds? That would be the way to go I would think for D&D if so. Allowing people to move between Dark Sun - Forgotten Realms - Dragonlance -Ravenloft, would be a pretty good way to create a successful Fantasy MMO. Although I am also tired of the Fantasy Genre. I am anxiously awaiting any news about the WAR 40K game in development. And a Battletech or Mad Max MMO would be awesome also. But like I said I may be wrong on my D&D memories, I've killed a lot of brain cells with beer since then.
Yeah Discworld. great universe.. however noone could make it good enough so bleh
I am starving for a non-fantasy mmo, but if it MUST be fantasy, I'd love to see one based in Midkemia (Raymond E. Feist books anyone?)

Oh come on guys (and gals...)! Leisure Suit Larry FTW!!!
MUAAHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!
Please God, can we please not have any more MMOs based on some other franchise or IP?! Milking someone else's idea or world and trying to spin it off into an MMO is getting old. Star Wars sucked, Matrix Sucked, D&D online sucked, and LOTRO is a glorified WoW mod. The last thing this genre needs is another attempt by some uncreative dev trying to get rich quick by playing off your fond memories of some movie, game, or book you read. Bring back originality and innovation.

Normally I would agree with you... but I just played a little game called Vanguard. Forget all the problems with the game, I left it because it just felt stale. Like some Dev sat around plugging in generic fantasy pieces to make it. At this point I'd rather play a game where a dev isn't being asked to write a story. Let the Dev's write the code, let the author's write the story. Maybe we get lucky and they don't trash a fond memory.
This had never crossed my mind, but now you bring it up, it would make a tremendous MMO!
Games Workshop Paranoia
Judge Dredd
Disc world
Call of the cthulhu
my 2p worth
I'd have to second the Shadowrun idea. I've played through the sega genesis game like a million times... hacking systems virtually and infiltrating companies for data was just plain cool. Battletech would be pretty sweet to but it'd probly end up alot like battlefield 2 and planetside... mostly for twitch players.
Firefly
Would love to play in the firefly universe ffa pvp full loot maybe even some form of perma death.
Starship Troopers
Would be rather generic but decent multi world mmo with actual chars based on war would be nice, primarily a PvE game I would think tbh.

Fixed. Why? All mmorpgs based on an IP have sucked. They must continue to include updates to keep new content, but they eventually stray away from the original story line. No mmorpg should be based on any IP. Publishers should actually think of something original (edit:) and actually hire professional writers to create the stories.
So you think that SWG didn't hire professional writers? they just sat some guys in front of some computers and was like.. code the star wars universe... doubt it
Robocop Online
Beetlejuice Online
Bill & Teds excellent adventures Online
Heavy Metal
Gor
Blade Runner
(yes I'm old)

This would be great, you could join a guild of Ankh-Morpork. You could become a guardian and get your quests of Commander Vimes!
Any MMO idea that overcomes the need to play a bipedal.
...seriously... you can't tell me that only BiPedals will become sentient... gimme a break...

I would say DragonLance cause I loved the books. But if you think about it it would not be terribly different from most fantasy MMO's. I'd rather see game creators going out of their way to make something similar to Earthbound in MMO form.
