Fantasy: Song of Fire and Ice Series by George R.R. Martin (you might know it as "The Game of Thrones"). Sci-Fi Space: "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card Sci-Fi Apocolypic: "A Hymn Before Battle" by John Ringo Gothic Horror: H.P. Lovecraft's universe (Cthulu, Arkham Asylum, or Miskatonic University) Steampunk: "Girl Genius" by Phil Foglio
I do like the Steampunk idea, reminds me of the mix Arcanum had (if anyone ever played that).

Hands down the best IP to use in an MMO would be RiftsfromPalladium Games. You have everything a gamer would ever want. Magic/Mecha/Cyberpunk/Space/Trans Dimensional travel/Demons/Angels/Superheroes... Its wide open to go buck wild in... Its really a no brainer....
My second vote goes to Battletech/Mechwarrior MMOs, especially if they made it with diverse career paths and the super deep political aspects, not just the mech combat, though that would be the draw for most, I assume!

I hadn't thought of that but you're totally right, Rifts would be awesome.
FireFly could just work if it's set after the end of the movie, so that it isn't constrained by lore too much.
I would really like to see a Deathstaker (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deathstalker_(novel)) MMORPG. I think that the universe crated by Simon R Green is perfect for it. There is SciFi, there is fantasy, there is an evil queen, there are swords and laser guns and as many augmentations and battle drugs as you can shake a stick at.
Shadowrun (yup great idea. so much lore, profession possibilities, fantasy AND Sci-fi components! ppl get to play their elves and we get to shoot them....who doesn't like that?
call of cathulu............
maybe a wihite wolf MMO like vampire, werewolf, or mage.
Kotor (never happen of course but in theory it would be cool)
I wouldn't think a battlestar mmo would be that exciting. Unless your one of the fighter pilots...there wouldn't be much to do. even as a fighter pilot....your what, waiting for the next attack/scouting mission?
not sure if anyone said this but Naruto would be a great sandbox MMO. just this of all the jutsus and fighting styles you could have in a game like that. plus you wont be so stuck down to the lore b/c its such an open IP.
The thing I can think of is what most others have said: 40K.
I like the idea of a Naruto RPG, but I can't help but think about how much the last games have been ruined by westernization, I don't see why it wouldn't happen to an MMO. If it was made by a good MMO company, it could be awesome, but I just don't see it happening. On paper, sounds, and could be, awesome, though.

My picks (not in order) would probably go something like:
Dune - why? um it's friggin Dune
Total Recall - why? IDK
Shinobi / or Tenchu - um, I just want a friggin ninja mmo. It can be based on the movie, or based on the games that came out years ago. It wouldn't even have to be about japanese lore. It could be a fantastical race who reveled in warrior culture and a break from that would be ninja like characters who moved through the shadows. Could be similar to other mmo's by having classes, or could go totally skill based without them.
KotoR - Could be all about the long standing war between Sith and Jedi.
Jade Empire - similar to KotoR
Vampire the Masquerade -( world of darkness is already being made so this is basically that)
One thousand and One Nights or Arabian Nights---doesn't have to be this, just loosely based on some of the fantasy.
Cherryh's Fortress Novels- books I've read in the past
Gemmels Legend Series- maybe WoW is kinda using this already.
Ultimately though I prefer new things that aren't based any existing IP. Of course as long as it is built correctly and not a throw away.
As far as what I would take from others to create my perfect MMO? Well, here are a few I guess:
Guildwars vision for skill usage....8 skills....choose your poison, I would up it to 10-20 though
Guildwars ability to see cleary what your opponent is using without having to watch a battle log.
Guildwars Shadow stepping, I love it.
WoW mechanics such as shadow meld and rogue stealth.
If based on skills, weapons would just be glory items for show and tell.
If based on gear, well...um...it's based on gear.
Customizable UI like WoW I guess
Pvp like in Daoc.
Oh yeah, No grind like Guildwars also, the only grind in the current guildwars is for titles. Lvling takes you right through the story. A decent scripted story. After that, could be exploring and instances, pvp and other endgame crap.
Music playing like LotRo.
FFA- but only if items weren't a big deal.
wanna see 32vs32 battles.
world destruction
etc etc etc.
Hmm, I guess what I really want is a Ninja MMO with a world at battle. No safe zones except starting zones. Player factions and guild alliances determine who owns what area, but even then it's still not safe. The day of the carebear is dead long gone.

I agree. Only problem I would think that would occur is how lop sided the villages would be. Hidden Leaf would be jam packed. That's why I say Ninja MMO, maybe a Naruto TYPE Universe, just not Naruto lore.

being able to hack into systems in Tron or Johnny Mnemonic type ways etc...
surprised thats not really done much in games.
Naruto... say what you want. It's perfect for a PvP MMO and has a lot of lore.

We're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad.
why not battlestar gallactica?
or bonanza
I'd like to see the following made into an MMORG...
1) Starblazers
2) Space 1999
3) Vampire series
4) Fallout
5) Elders scrolls stuff.
Dutchess Zarraa Voltayre
Reborn/Zero Sum/Ancient Legacy/Jagged Legion/Feared/Nuke & Pave.
I wouldn't think a battlestar mmo would be that exciting. Unless your one of the fighter pilots...there wouldn't be much to do. even as a fighter pilot....your what, waiting for the next attack/scouting mission?

THQ Is working on a Warhammer 40k MMO along side GamesWorkshop.
Playing: Everthing
Played: DAoC,AC2,EvE,SWG,WAR,MXO,CoX,EQ2,L2,LOTRO,SB,UO,WoW.
I have played every MMO that has ever come out.

RIFTS! Get the ruleset done, and you have just about endless expansions... I just wanna be a Glitterboy Pilot or a Juicer!
That and a Anarchy Online 2. Hell, take the existing game (sans Alien Invasion) and use the Tabula Rasa engine and Id be happy! ;p
