Fair enough the graphics are similar because Blizz ripped them off but did Mythic really have to make their game look almost identical to WoW? I mean the fonts, the play style, scrolling damage, everything. Sure it's got some tweaks and innovations but they've deliberatley gone for a very similar game-feel. Essentially it should be the pvp game that WoW could have been before it took it's wrong turn shortly after retail.

And would that be such a bad thing? Not for me I can't wait.

Yeah so what if it looks like WoW? really, Mythic / GW have EVERY RIGHT to make Warhammer look like Warhammer, why the hell should they change things because Blizzard decided to keep going ahead with Warcraft when they had the option to scrap it and try something new? thats nobodys fault but BLizzards im afraid!

WAR is all about the PVP, if it borrows from WoW then thats good because WoW works dispite what the haters say... but I must say the WAR PvP looks slow and boring in the videos I have seen, too much like "stand still, my turn to hit you now".. the pace of the PvP is a few bars below WoW PvP.... and yes WoW PvP has no reason (yet) but its fast, responsive and fun.

Of course I'll need to play WAR to find out, but thus far WAR PvP does not impress me.

Lol.. did you really just say that.. blizzard ripped someone off for their design is far from original..  The game is sinking to the pits.. why do you think they keep coming out with expansions and more more pvp based...  Real MMO'rs like myself recognize that there are way better mmorpgs out there with better pvp and questing... Blizzard is trying to add all that crap to keep you enticed on that POS game...  Trying to make you only focus on WoW and nothing else...  ask a reall mmorpg'r what they think of wow...  Wait till Warhammer online and Age of Conan come out GG blizzard cant wait till this WoW phase is over...

    WoW what a bad attitude.

For a self proclaimed REAL MMO'er you know very little about MMO's. All MMO's release expansions, all MMO's add content over time and all MMO's want you to play their game and only their game.

Nevermind that the Warhammer IP is older than 'Computer Gaming' as a genre, not even to mention MMOs...

And for UI, feel, etc ... WoW is a very middle of the line MMO - it steals pieces from EVERY OTHER MMO ON THE MARKET. The WoW UI is actually stolen from the XML-era of Camelot, tradeskilling stolen from AC, and the simple spell-set is stolen from AO. Instancing isn't original either, nor is faction-based PvP or *gasp* raiding. What does WoW have that is original?

None of this detracts a game from being better/worse than another - THEY'RE ALL MMOs - they should have something in common...

Why is it people say  WoW   "stole" ideas when other games "use" ideas from other other games.

I have to say alot of what is in WoW was first seen in diablo 1/2 which were released before even EQ. That is instancing, raiding, PvP, talent trees and classes. So who "stole" from who?

WoW is played my millions and its sub base is still growing 3 years after its release, so it does something right.

yes! Yes they stole it all! Clearly they suck and you should go back to your bastion that is WoW.

Seriously, I can't even look at Warhammer anymore because I know the WoW community has their eyes firmly fixed on it, and as much as I think I would absolutely love this game because of what I've seen and my interest in warhammer, I don't even want to play it because I don't want to see how badly the WoW community is going to trash the experience.

I just can't help it, I have to put in my $.02 worth. I haven't read the whole thread because I just don't have that kind of free time, so I'm sure I'll say things that have already been said. I'm also not likely to check back to read responses, so if you actually want to parley with me on my thoughts here, pm me.

    That said...

All mmo's borrow(steal?) from those that came before. I really can't think of much that Blizzard 'invented' for WoW. They didn't invent the genre, they didn't invent PvP, they didn't invent in-game mail(which somewhere along the way someone suggested was the case). All of these things existed LONG before WoW was a gleam in Blizzards eye. It's been suggested that even if WAR isn't ripping off the look of WoW, since GW came up with said look, they should still bow down and show respect to their forefathers. I have to say that I haven't met too many WoW fans that show such respect to EQ, AC, DAoC, UO, or the many others that came before them. My first MO(wasn't actually massive, so it only gets one 'M') was Meridian 59, which had open PvP and in-game mail back in 1996. My first online multiplayer RPG experience didn't have graphics at all.

I can't really understand why people spend so much time on forums, and even in game, bashing other peoples games. I play EQ2, not because it's 'the best ever!' but because that's where I've invested my time, and more importantly that's where all my friends are. (I really like Vanguard better, but until they finish/fix it I can't get any of those afore mentioned friends to make the switch with me)

I recall many times in the past I'd be running around the Commonlands and people would be on the /shout channel saying how EQ2 sucked, and WoW was better in every way. They would argue the point vehemently if challenged, although I never payed any attention to them.

So, here's what I have to wonder: if a certain game is better than every other game... if it is, in fact, the best EVER... why would someone be logged into a different game... instead of the one they love... they had to at the very least install it, patch it, and register a free trial... at worst they bought it... and for no reason other than to complain about it?

There's this thing called guerrilla marketing that comes to mind, and I honestly haven't seen any of those /shout outbursts for a while now. In fact, WoW must've done something to tick people off, because the Antonia Bayle server had a large influx of ex-WoW players not long ago.

This turned out a lot longer than I expected...

Anyway, the point is this: Why do we, as humans, feel the need to tear others down all the time? Why doesn't everyone just play what they want to play, and STFU?

Thanks for those that actually made it through this post... send a message to me if you have any comments, otherwise... flame on...

I know exactly what you mean. WoW irritates the hell out of me... It breeds gank-festing muppets whom sole objective is to try and ruin it for the rest of us. People say WoW has done a great deal for the MMO genre... Yeah, business-wise maybe! Other than that all it's done is pollute the genre.

It's a shame really, it looks brilliant. I'm just glad we have the likes of AoC and Tabula Rasa to segregate the has-beens. Keep them all in WAR and I'm a happy man.

If you're not a muppet and still plan on playing WAR I sallute you. I couldn't do it.

To wank, or not to wank. The ultimate MMO sacrifice.

Even Imperator Online was canceled and that game had 10x the ammound of graphics the original WAR had

    sigh.....

By making a game that looks like Warhammer.  I know it sounds stupid, but some people think because Blizzard nicked the art style from Games Workshop and made an MMO, that Warhammer Online shouldn't look like Warhammer.

NOBODY STOLE ANYTHING FROM ANYONE,  It's not STEALING.  ANYONE who makes a game with a FANTASY style will look much like the others.   I'm not talking about PHYSICAL looks.   When game Mechanics, and the way it lays out, and in general how a game feels are what I look for.   IF i'm playing a game that feels like a persistant WORLD instead of a game, I enjoy them more.  I liked WoW's graphics to be honest,  And I like a more real look like EQ2 and Conan are,.  Its not the looks,  its just how it feels... Does it draw me in,  and make me curious.    I'm hopeing for something that feels NEW.  If Warhammer does end up feeling new, and exciting,  I think I'll end up playing it.  Nobody can explain how a game feels, specialy one thats not out yet.  I'm excited to see a game that changes the rules.   Wish Warhammer would have made LEVEL's different then 1-60 kinda deal.

Anyeay back to the matter at hand.  War isn't Ripping off WoW,    Their making a game that just has more incommon with WOW, then DIFFERENT from WoW's game.

If you think WAR is a rip off of WoW... Go read a little about the two and you will reilize WAR is not trying to be like WoW, nor is it like WoW... WAR IS PVP! Also Warhammer series came before Warcraft...

You have to remember that a bad community is only a bad community bacause of what they are exposed to day after day, WoW inspires hate via ganking and , Ive got a bigger epic sword that you kinda shite.

Actually, that's normally the case. Unfortunately the case with WoW is more or less that it brought in a HUGE amount of noobs to the MMO community. Now, I'm not saying all noobs are bad, but it brought in a vast majority of immature people who are now going completely apeshit across the entire genre now that they're bored of WoW. I miss the days where you could actually play a MMO and not have half the community be dancing naked at the new character spawn in,  while the others named "s3xyT0aster" jump up and down around them spamming chuck norris jokes. I'm not against messing around in a game, but these people are just freaking obnoxious, and don't even get me started with their constant complaints about "balance" and trying to group with them.

Amen, brother. You should have seen my "ignore" list when I played WoW. It must've contained half of Malfurion!

Indeed amen brother....where are the early days of DAOC/AC/UO etc in wich everyone was just glad to be able to play an mmorpg. These days it's all about powerlevelling..getting the coolest items and being uber instead of just enjoying the fact you're playing an online game in a persistant world with people from all over the place.

I do not hate WoW , i do however hate what it did to the mmorpg-community and mmorpg-gaming in general.

  • AstralglideAstralglide Member UncommonPosts: 686

I always felt that being part of any community was helping out the young (newbies). Even in most guilds I had difficulty finding anybody to help out with some of the lvl 50+ instances and I spent a lot of my guild time doing RFC, WC, and SFK runs to help out and teach the newbies how to party.  BTW- Is there a MMORPG that is free of Chuck Norris and Leroy Jenkins?
