Is WAR ripping off WoW?

After watching all the WAR videos it's become crystal clear that WAR is using EXACTLEY the same engine as WoW... Exactley the same cartoony style, character models...even the yellow explanation marks!

I'm by no means trying to flame, but can anyone explain what exactley is original about this game considering all the hype?

    Another troll huh... fair enough.

Warhammer art style came before Warcraft.

Different engines are being used. If you had actually LOOKED at screen shots comparing the two games you would see vast differences in quality which is different then art style.

Your argument is naive and you should probably do more research before making inaccurate claims.

    QFT.

If people to lazy to go to WAR website and read all the features that clearly shows it is different from WoW, then that will be their own fault to pass up what should be a good game.

You are doing blind statements here. Warhammer came out way before Blizzard starts making warcraft franchise and Warhammer is famous for its cute looking miniatures before other game companies uses that as inspiration for its games.

Let me get your facts right.

Rip = a copy of something that looks exactly the same.

Inspiration = a copy of something that is based on a completed products by getting its best of the best.

Before i end this thread, you are not eligible to play WAR Online. just kidding!

All canceled. Waiting on Warhammer Online : Age of Reckoning.

Wonder what trolls drop nowdays, anything shiny perhaps?

And if you by any chance arent trolling then you really need to go to a doctor and check your eyes and afterwards  read about the game before making such flawed claims.

You are right - WAR stole WoW's proprietary engine. Here is how it went down:

Paul distracted Blizzard guards with his pimped sunglasses and flailing limbs, while Jeff Hickman snatched it and ran. Never mind that they are using the Gamebryo engine. Never mind that you have no idea what an engine is and are confusing engine with style, two things that are quite independent.

You are also right that this is the exact same game. I mean, it is only logical to copy another company because that clearly would be a clever idea, and assuming anything less would be downright moronic - you avoided that pitfall.

If you want to find out why it is different, go read a zillion threads that try to explain why, or go to a zillion fan sites and read the literature and watch the movies. If you do not want to do this, then you can be content with your opinion that WAR is the same as WoW and need not worry any longer, because you have already come here with a closed mind, evidenced by hastily drawn conclusions based on minimal information - no one will change that.

The information is out there, you are just too lazy to go find it, which basically makes this a troll.

You are wrong in your assumption.

    Warhammer Fantasy Battle

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Warhammer: The Game of Fantasy Battles, formerly Warhammer Fantasy Battle and often abbreviated to Warhammer, is a tabletop wargame created by Games Workshop and the origin of the Warhammer Fantasy setting.

The game is played with 'regiments' of fantasy miniatures. It uses stock fantasy races such as humans, elves, dwarfs, undead, orcs, goblins, vampires, as well as some more unusual types such as lizardmen, skaven, etc. Each race has its own unique strengths and flaws; Wood Elves, for example, have some of the most powerful archers in the game but have poor overall defense.

Since first appearing in 1983, Warhammer has been periodically updated and re-released with changes to the gaming system and army lists. The current official version is the seventh edition, released on 9 September 2006.

Since you've watched ALL the videos why not go to the offical site and read a little? You'd then know that WAR runs on a very much updated DAoC engine (Thats Dark Age of Camalot, it's a MMO that was out before WoW! Fucking shock a MMO before WoW!!).

The yellow explination marks, you mean the WAR symbol above there heads, like the ring above the hears in LotrO and so on.

The graphics style is not the same, go get your eyes checked you've got 5 /  13 vision, need that fixed to 20 / 20.

Now, since your running on a WoW theme (Sigh here we go once again) why do you think its got such hype? People are looking for somthing new and since they auto WoW to WAR they think there going to like it. Thus a small part of why its hyped.

Whats original is the RvR, the aspect of being able to PvP at any level gain experiance and armour, weapons and so on. buildingburn and the zone around you shifts in looks depending on who controls it (Example:castle nice when when your side controls it, castle burnt out and slummed when orcs have sacked it and raped you for thinking your safe there).

All class's are diffrent, no one class if the same. play a tank for say empire (humans) will be diffrent to playing a tank for orcs or chaos.

You don't need to activate a kill quest just kill say 30 orcs and the guy at the top of the castle watching you below see's, next time you see him or first time he says "hey seen you kill all those orcs" pats you on the back and gives you phat loot.

I could go on, but since it would take all day why not go have a real look at the game?

I'm not trying to troll... Perhaps it's the quality of the videos I watched, but you can't deny the striking resemblance WAR takes to WoW. Warhammers art style coming before WoW means nothing because WoW has been on the shelves for three years now. I enjoyed WoW but like many others have become bored of it. Then seeing all the hype behind WAR and seeing what looks like a clone of WoW begs the question; what exactley is original about WAR?

The important question and also valid conern is that if you're tired of WoW, what does WAR offer that will reignite the MMO flame when WAR looks strikingly like WoW's long lost twin brother?

To wank, or not to wank. The ultimate MMO sacrifice.

Well Warhammer MMO was looking like this in 2004, the usual thing back in 2002-2004 that a game must look realistic to be a sucess:

Then WoW came out looking like this in 2004, spitting in the face of previous games and was/is a huge hit:

And then in summer 2004 Warhammer was cancelled and turned over to Mythic to remake the warhammer MMO which looks like this today:

Now b4 the fanboys start yet "OMGZ war came first you noob" I know that, but even the most avid WAR fan cannot say thats its a coincidence that the original Warhammer game was dropped after WoW (with its so called basic and cartoony gfx) was seen to draw million of players and that the new warhammer took a similar gfx style to WoW.

So you think Mythic should not make the game look like Warhammer

That's exactly my point, WoW is now institutionalized. So given the similarities between WoW and WAR i'm asking genuinely what does WAR offer that WoW doesn't?

Yeah....those look so similar don't they. And that WAR screenshot is ancient , the graphics have improved since then, and lighting has just started being put in. Not sure how much WoW has improved since their shot, but the plain and simple truth is that anyone with any semblance of eyesight can tell that those are completely different styles and looks.

  • ArchinArchin Member Posts: 103

    Those screenshots are perfect! why?

Because you can clearly see they have both been made in different model editors, WAR's models are alot more powerfull in that they have more seperate meshes grouped with the final mesh... this is because (funny innit) WAR and WoW are running with completly different game engines :)

I have always thuoght that warcraft looked like warhammer ever since the games came out years ago, the way the figures looked and all, is just the same way they look in the mmo's, so if you ask me warcraft may have made the first mmo, butwarhammer had the cartoony looks and style you see in warcraft before warcraft was even warcraft.

Fair enough, after looking at the screens WAR does seem to hold a lot more detail, something you can't see in the videos I watched.

So perhaps its just an upgrade of WoW?? Ha-ha... Now I am trolling

On a serious note though, I do hope WAR is a success, but I'm still intrigued to see what delights WAR brings to the MMO table. Still waiting for some info on that...

Could it just be that WARHAMMER and WARCRAFT happen to look a lot alike, and the MMO's have the art of their origin?

To be honest, they have ALWAYS looked similar.

Just look at Warcraft 1, 2, and 3. Then look at Warhammer Fantasy. Very similar.

Dont worry OP, more people than you think are saying that same thing when they look at the WAR videos. It really does look like a WoW 2.0, and thats what it probably is going to be. And its not just the art...we're talking about gameplay and how the two games work. Dont deny what you see man....what you see is what you get, and it looks just like WoW and nothing that they can say will change that. Good job using your brain on this one

How is WAR a ripoff of WOW. They are completely different in gameplay. The only thing that is the same is the art style which is actually a lot better than other art styles out there today.

I have to agree war is way different from wow... check it out your self and do some research.

  • sirespersiresper Member Posts: 317

Other than a slight similarity in graphics (obviously due to same source material) I don't see any similarities. A 5 minute run through of the official site will do wonders if you haven't already formed preconceived notions beforehand.

If WAR ends up being the PVPers WoW, then that's fine with me.  Blizzard can't seem to give the PvPers much of what they want.  If Mythic can, then I'm with it.   I'm not crazy about the fact that they look similar (and WAR does look a lot better), but as long as the gameplay is good, and it's all about PvP...  That's pretty much all I need.

After reading the Game Overview it does look very promising. I just hope RvR isn't entirely instance based like the battlegrounds in WoW because that truly would be old news.
