That's too much of an assumption.

It is probably just to replace some older guys or they want a bigger, better team.  And they are making Starcraft 2 which means no Diablo 3.

They have too much to give up to just start a new idea.  Why would they do that when they can still make millions of more dollars with upgrades?

Blizzard never announces a game till it's at least half done. They're just starting hiring, the listings are a few months old at most. Odds are won't be more info for another year, knowing Blizzard.

BTW- No one assumed a thing. Blizzard is hiring for a next gen MMO. And just because they're working on one game, doesn't mean they won't be doing another. Look at the cash they've made of WOW. Of course they'll want another MMO, and of course they have the cash to do it. There wasn't any assuming-Blizzard says they have 2 positions for a 'Next Gen MMO'. That's pretty open and shut.

All we know is that they are working on another MMO, they have confirmed this and they have said "it will be innovative like nothing seen before".

We can rule out a Diablo MMO as thats a fantasy based MMO thats been done to death.  My money is on a Starcraft MMO after seeing what they are putting into Starcraft 2 (lore, an entire galaxy with planets they you can read into the lore of and the races that populate it) - in short adding a story and world to SC.. simialr to what they did with Warcraft 3 prior to WoW.

So right now If I could I would wager a dollar on a Starcraft MMO. but probably an RTS/MMO hybid.

Blizzard isn't stupid and wants to stay the leader in the mmo market. WoW, like any other product, has it's lifespan. If they start developing a new mmo now it might be done in time to stay as world leader.

They actually are making an MMO.  One of my sister's friends went to a school called Full Sail.  After he had graduated my sister said he got a job at blizzard.  She gave me his AIM and I asked him about Full Sail, one of my questions was "Would I learn what I needed to make MMORPG's?"  He responded "I would say so since I'am working on one."  This was like a year ago, and you didn't hear it from me.

Oh. I am excited.  Blizzard has made some great products:  Warcraft III: Frozen Throne; Starcraft; Diablo; et al.  Yes. I consider World of Warcraft a good product.

At least I know where all the money they made from WoW is going!  It was smart not to put it into WoW with actually "good" expansions.

    False assumption I think.

Saying fantasy MMOs have been done to death is like saying fantasy novels have been done to death. Yet they still, after 50+ years, top the best seller lists... Shows a little of just how popular and enduring the fantasy genre is eh? The very reason devs choose fantasy as their medium is it's massive and almost universal fanbase.

What Blizzard *could* be suggesting is that their game *system* is innovative, which has, of course, nothing to do with genre.

So, lets not rule anything out yet.

It's so easy to confuse what you want to happen with what will happen.

Most MMORPG creators makes one fatal mistake.

They build up the system so that you can powerlevel youre way to the top, this is why Eve-Online still has the same solid loyal playerbase that started more then 4 years ago still playing with the new players that have joined over the years.

Because of Eve's revolutionary skilling concept noone was able to play for 3 months and get all the best items and fly the best ships have the hugest dps win every fight, and then get bored with the game. Due to its passive skilling system meaning that you start a character with diffrent attributes these attributes like Perception, Willpower, Intelligence, Charisma, Memory all favour diffrent aspects of the skills trained in the background so basiclly you start youre skill and based on youre characters attributes which can be upgraded by various learning skills and implants you train faster or slower it depends on how much ISK you put into it and time.

CCP which created Eve Online is now working on World of Darkness online which is a MMORPG Based on a World of Vampires and werewolves many of you have probably seen the movies Underworld 1 and 2 and played the game Vampire the masquerade which is about the strifes of the vampire clans and the Camarilla the game was made by white-wolf some years ago but White wolf has now merged with CCP and i believe that they will adapt Eve's skilling system to this game which only makes perfect sense. A vampire should be growing stronger depending on how old he is.

As i see it the gothic world of the vampires are still one of the most unused zones in the gaming industry and could be a slamming MMORPG PVP game with all the houses fighting and intruiging which eachother about who and what clan to be Prince of the city.

    Thats all for me

If I was to guess it would have to be an mmo based on one of their existing IPs, as opposed to a completely new series with lore no one is familiar with. Blizzard knows what it is good at, it knows what has made it successful till now. By taking existing, familiar and popular ideas and building upon them.

So what are their biggest IP's that they have the most to gain from exploiting?

    Warcraft, Diablo, or Starcraft

So I would say... in order of my personal expectations of likelihood:

    1) Starcraft MMO

    2) Diablo MMO

    3) A next gen iteration of WoW

I would put starcraft above diablo for the reason that it could piggyback off of the hype created from their release of starcraft 2 and possible expansions. As well as it being a completely different style than diablo (which while being 'gothic' still shares a lot in common with traditional fantasy which is overused).

in order for blizzard to make a next gen mmorpg.. someone else would first have to make a next gen mmo and then they could steal all their ideas.

they may have lots of cash and the name blizzard...

but the staff that made wow no longer exists.

I think it was logical that Blizzard sooner or later would make another MMO. The term Next-Gen has become kinda inflationary, so for me its atm nothing than RP bla bla. It can be good or bad, but thats not easy to say. I am, however, quite sure Blizzards most difficult burden will be WOW itself. Its a record that will be VERY hard to top, and of course EVERYONE will compare the new MMO to WOW. The fans will expect another WOW, the haters will suspect it in the negative way, so its quite a burden. I guess Bliizard will not be able to repeat the great success of WOW. It was a very singular thing, hitting the right thing at the right time, which can not just be repeated anytime soon.

Its a similar situation as Peter Jackson is in. With Lord of the Rings he has likely made the best movie he will ever make, and now, all he can do is 2nd best movies, which must be a depressing situation, and my guess it its similar for Blizzard with whatever MMOs they will make.  I am more interested in the general topic. Maybe the joke that Blizzard makes SWG 2 will come true, lol.

They could make an mmo that attracts the non-WoW crowd. A different type of gameplay.

Thereby increasing their income while maintaining their current WoW subscribers

    Probably Diablo III.

I would pretty much say that it in no way will be Diablo 3.  If that was the game they were creating they wouldn't allow Flagship Studio to do so much advertising based on the name Diablo.  Plus pretty much all of the developers of Diablo are gone.  About Half went to Flagship Studio (including Bill Roper) another half or so went to ArenaNet.  Plus Diablo was a game that was designed by Blizzard North before they were even Blizzard North.  So when all of those developers left, I really doubt Blizzard is going to attempt to continue that IP.

My guess would be something innovative with Starcraft or Lost Vikings IPs.

I hope to god it's a SC MMO...they already screwed over Ghost...and as said, Diablo is too played out since the devs left for other companies and are working on projects of their own...any new Diablo game would cause court cases

They need to make a new MMO IMO. They ruined WoW with TBC and the next expansion is more of the same from what I read. Specifically, BG's (no more world PvP) and no more 40 man raids ruined WoW for me. I truly hope Bliz is making a new MMO because I know they will do it right.

If they're just now hiring staff, the game itself won't be released for 4 or 5 more years.  WoW isn't going to keep it's insanely high subscriber numbers into 2012, and Blizzard isn't going to stop making MMOs just because they got one massive hit.   I'm not surprised at all to hear they're planning another MMO.

Maybe for the new WoW expansion? They want to get the work done in a year. They will need lots of people.

Or maybe a Diablo3 or a Starcraft MMO (Which I doubt, as they just announced starcraft 2)...

    dunno could be anything.

Exactly, the graphics are already getting a bit outdated... In another 2 years... WoW = oldskool

Considering it took 4 or 5 years to make WoW. If they started now they can release a new MMO around 2012. That would make it around 8 years since WoW's release and a perfect time to release a new MMO.
