I'm a beta 1 vet, I quit once for a few weeks when i found out there was an alpha class in the game (As im sure alot of others did aswell) but i came back around three weeks later and i've been enjoying the game since.
salute to us true vets

Someone who left half way through the vietnam war isn't as much of a vet as someone who stayed with his fellow comrades and fought it out.

Dude we weren't fighting a war against totalitarian oppression in SWG, we were getting ripped off and lied to by a sleazy video game company. In any case if I'm fighting anything it's corporate greed, and I think I'm doing a better job of that when I'm not giving SOE my cash. If you wanna keep playing and paying that's cool, but there's no need to disrespect other vets who don't want to reward SOE's shady business practices.
I started playing a few months after launch... because I figured the bugs would've been worked out.
While there were 'bugs', I had about 20 or so RL friends playing the game and a great guild.
The CU killed the guild... I left for a few months, but came back.
Then the NGE killed the guild I joined after that.
I tried to stick around, but left again for a month or so.
I've been back on/off again throughout the NGE.
I used to look forward to logging in and 'doing things'... anything. PvP, grinding loot, etc.,...
The game is garbage.
Patchwork, mismatched 'old content' chewed up,used, and abused and then spat back out for us to accept as 'new content'.
I had more between 5-10 accounts at a given time preCU and during the CU. The NGE made those accounts useless.
I belong to one of the largest/oldest Rebel guilds on the server... and they are a skeleton crew at best.
The combat system lacks any type of inspiration or originality.
The expertise system is a cheap knock-off of what other games have done... better.
The artwork that used to be 'superior' is now 'run of the mill', imho.
No new content in a long time (sorry, but revamped old stuff doesn't count).
SOE continued to take away the things we liked about the game but failed to really give us anything in return... other than a promise that they were taking away bugs.
The server I'm on is 'light-very light' and we still have lag issues during PvP and lots of rubber-banding.
Shops are barren.
New players have a tough time finding items OR good directions from players.
PvP is hard to find.
PvE is tired and it's all 'been done'.
Bringing creature handler back in a watered down shadow of its former self was supposed to be 'big news' for SOE... even though it came very late after it was requested and as a 'side prof' via 'Expertise'.
Restuss was put into place and just forgotten about... this should've continued to be developed and augmented to keep it interesting.
The Dev's gave Entertainers tons of abilities, animations, combat functionality, etc.,... terrible use of their time, imho.
Zero delivery from SOE on player requests for new content (planets, pvp zones, armor, weapons, etc.,..)... they just keep trickling out 'crap' that they feel the need to broadcast with all the underwhelming electricity of a Ben Stein commercial.
SOE keeps buying new games and abusing them... as opposed to fixing the messes they already have on their hands.
SOE launched 2 combat upgrades and used the excuse 'we can't roll back because we don't have the back-up data to do so'... which makes them the single worst 'IT' organization in the known universe. They didn't have a back-out plan? They didnt' keep back-up data 'just in case'? If the roll-out of either the CU or the NGE would've failed and they would've nuked our toons... then what? They would've expected us to roll new toons? I think not.
SOE lies... period.
SOE killed my inner-child.
I'm waiting to see how badly they destroy the DC characters (if they still have rights to that?).

Man that's a good summary of all the crazy things SOE did to its Star Wars playerbase. I just read an article quoting that GreyPawn dude. He talks as if the NGE was an isolated incident that vets (he calls us cynical dissidents) refuse to get over. Buddy should read your list here as the condensed version of all the B.S. people got dragged through by his company. And yes they continue to shovel it out expecting people to pay to have things restored piece by piece that were taken away 2 years ago. They're still employing that strategy, and expecting people to pay while they still work on something as basic as NPC difficulty.

wow thats the best ive heard it put in a long time, alas you are right the game is dead and should probably more like guild wars now, you know where u dont pay for it.
quit shorly before CU for a few months i had been in a bad house fire that destroyed my left lung in august 2003 so i had been on the sick for some time afterwards during that time when not at physio or hospital appointments i was locked in my own littl world of self pity in SWG playing about 10-14 hrs a day if not 24 hrs at times and i had pardon the pun burnt myself out on it.
i had a little 2 -3 month sebatacle and got my head sorted an back working when i returned it was no longer my life but just a game and i wholeheartedly enjoyed the CU final moment came with the NGE a complete bastardisation of the game to see my friends list drop from 250 active players to about 10 in the space of a week so i decided to quit.
I have tried to go back since but it just pains me to play i think if it was a fresh start id enjoy SWG but knowing and loving what it once was it just isnt possible for me to enjoy it especially when you visit old haunts.
My favourite location was always the krayt graveyard i would spend 90% of my playtime hunting krayt now the graveyard is a joke.

You may want to be carefull how you say this.
My uncle Brian landed in Vietnam on Jan 16th 1968 as a replacement, and was assigned to Alpha Co 1st Battalion 1st Marines in a weapons platoon. On Jan 30th you may recall the NVA / VC launched the 'Tet offencive'
On 30th Jan at arround 5:30 pm local, they were heavily engaged with a force near Phu Loc
On 31st at 06:15 am they were involved in clearing a force that had siezed and planned to demolish the Truoi River Bridge.
At 0830 the bridge secure, they were ordered North to Hue.
They were in a column led by 2 M-48 Patton tanks, a 'Duster' ( 2.5 ton truck mounted with a quad 50 cal turret ) then the 2.5 ton trucks transporting the Marines, after that was annother 'Duster' and 2 M-48 flame varriant tanks. 6 ARVN M-24 light tanks were in the trail end, attempting to reinforce their units in Hue.
They had just hit the Suburbs in the south, and were crossing the An Cuu bridge when the first weapon fire came in. After a brief fight, they remounted, and advanced about 200 meters, then all hell broke loose. A B-40 rocket knocked out the lead tank, and a second rocket struck his truck in the cab. It killed the driver, and platoon leader instantly. My uncle had his legs blown off near the knees, and multiple shrapnel wounds to upper legs, groin, arms, and lost 2 fingers on his left hand.
By the time Golf Co 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines fought their way forward in the early afternoon to link up with Alpha 2 Marine tanks were outta action, as were 3 ARVN light tanks, 4 Trucks were disabled, and Alpha had every officer from Capt Batcheller ( Company CO ) down killed or wounded, and almost 60 % total casualties.
My uncle Brian was in Vietnam for 15 days... Are you gonna comment he didn't stick it out like my Father? Who landed at Da Nang in '66 with VMF (AW) - 235 in F-8 Crusaders, and rotated back to the states to transition into F-4's in 69 only to return and then be shot down and killed in the Easter offensive in '72.
Perhaps my Uncle Rick killed at Quang Tri in '68 after going over in 66 as well? He only served 2 tours, surely he could have served annother?
My uncle Eddie perhaps is your only 'true' vet. Landing in Cam Ranh Bay in July '65 he partook in Opperation Market Time. Later he was with Task Force 115, and then when Operation Game Warden came he transitioned from PGM's to PCF's. By the time Operation SEALORDS came he was in PBR's. served there til the Veitnamization turned all US Naval 'Brown Water Navy' craft over to the RVN Navy in late 69-spring 70.
All told my family sent 5 member into Vietnam. They served from Ha Tien to the DMZ, and many sorties into North Vietnam as well. One served 17 days incountry, and others up through 6 years. Of the 5 2 were Killed in Action, 1 Missing in Action, 1 Wounded in Action, and 1 safely returned home.
Now which one isn't as much a vet as the others?
Mankind is not limited by imagination, but the courage to reach....
After getting my final box for Jedi and finding out a week later that it was taken away!
I do admit i have logged back in but it is a shell of a games.
I will always say this. SWG was and still is the best MMORPG i have ever played and will play. Even CU was getting better, with smuggerler revamp just round the corner, before the dark times, (nge)
But for me I only give up on a game when it's not worth playing anymore, not out of protest.
That time was the NGE. I tried to adapt to everything they bollocksed up to that point because at the core it was still a great MMORPG.
But when they pretty much destroyed the entire economy system by removing the need for most of the games items and services, I just couldn't enjoy it anymore.
Shame, as it was about a day after I re-registered and decided to give the Combat Upgrade another shot.

Now listen up, Ladies and Gentlemen. This is the correct way to silence the ignorant.
I got out when it became obvious that the dev's were not listening to the player and adding in lots of new features that would continually reintroduce old game breaking bugs.
I left when it became obvious that there were a lot of ego's involved in various pet projects for the game that had little to do with the core gameplay and how they refused to fix it over and over again. Only to revamp it later into a dumbed down joke of a system that ruined the game.
I say ruined the game because to this day I've yet to find a MMO that matched the sheer fun, simplicity and yet depth of complexity the game had to offer. Unlike other games out now which are either too simple or too complex, the original SWG had the combination of simple and complex gameplay just "right"
For me in the end I left because the game was just broken, and it was big obvious bugs that would still exist 6 months or a year after being discovered and we'd hear continous "we're working on that just wait for xxx" and xxx never fixed the issues. In the end, I got sick of blantant lies and false platitudes.
I went to COH for a bit, was nice to just play a game that "worked as intended" and eventually settled on WOW more because of the polish than any great gameplay.
Look we all know the original SWG game got it all right conceptually, they just blew it in execution and its going to be a long time until the industry comes to that realization sadly.
Pre-Order Day 1 vet with worst pre-order reward of useless untradable sunglasses. Beta applicant. Didn't want to do Beta 3 and wasn't in on beta 1.
Played day 2 (couldn't log day 1) to CU. Quit when cu invalidated characters and ruined crafting. Returned 1 time during CU and got back in just in time for the NGE. Beta'd NGE and actually got past the Han bug day 1.
Never been back since giving the NGE 10 hours. The NGE had promise, of which it required many more months of coding and testing before it was ready.
I'll only return for a pre-cu server. I just want a stable star wars mmo to play and imo that was achieved. It lacked content but at least the combat system and class interaction was "livable".
I look forward to the day when a swg ad is up like I see for UO.

Theres also no reason to disrespect people who enjoy the game, but you still do.
If I've been disrespectful to anyone, I'd like to hear about it from your point of view. If I could see your point, I'd apologize. I'm not aware of being disrespectful to anyone in these forums, and continue to think very highly of those friends who continue to play SWG because it's the only Star Wars game in town, and because of all the friends they've met. If I don't respect something, it's the way players have been treated by SOE. I truly don't respect their behaviour, because in my view it's not respectable. I hope that you can see the difference and not take my disrespect for a company's behaviour as disrespect to other players or you personally. If you play, and can enjoy it, I wish you well.
This thread & to be honest now is one of many on this forum just goes to show how much a bunch of absulate Freaks majority of you all are, you really need to get over this lmao how long this been now??.
This thread alone is just sad its a GAME how can you get so personal with so much venom about such a issue? granted many threads over many games is like this now but seriously to me atleast you serious VETS have issues.

Maybe you're wrong. and the ones with issues are people like yourself. Its about the community the old SWG could attract, ya know, ....people. Understand that?
See you in the dream.. The Fires from heaven, now as cold as ice. A rapid ascension tolls a heavy price.

Well it's been said many times, but you may have missed those threads. While the "content" of the issue happens to be a video game, the "process" is more than that. Read the posts about unethical business practices if you want: misleading people intentionally about a product you plan to deliver. This could be about anything. In this case it's an entertainment service.
Add to that SOE's encouragement of people to become emotionally invested in the game's community and social structure. Build houses, build cities and guilds, meet new people, get married, make new real friendships etc etc.
Add to that the fact that Star Wars connects with many players' childhood happy place, and you have some very powerful social/emotional dynamics at work. SOE is aware of this, they don't deny it. They've encouraged this kind of investment, partly I imagine because it's good for retaining customers.
The trouble is that when you dismantle everything that holds this virtual community together, it causes harm. There is a psychological impact. The impact relates to feeling defrauded on one hand for many, but also to feeling that friendships, community and accomplishments achieved over a long period of time have been terminated. The apparent motivation behind this termination is additionally troubling. Virtual environments like this are new for people. The impact of participating in them is just now becoming the subject of much inquiry in the field of social sciences. The emotional potential for good or ill that is offered by a virtual community is quite significant. FYI ^_^.
I started at the closed beta (think it was beta 4 or something like that) and I unsubscribed around 2 days after NGE came out...I was so pissed, I had JUST gotten my jedi after like 6 months of grinding, and literally 2 days after I get it they announce the NGE and the FREE jedi. Also I just could not get used to the stupid UI.,.....what a load of horse crap, I have never seen anything so thrown together in my life...the beta UI was better than that one.

If you wanna keep playing and paying that's cool, but there's no need to disrespect other vets who don't want to reward SOE's shady business practices.
Theres also no reason to disrespect people who enjoy the game, but you still do.
wow thats the best ive heard it put in a long time, alas you are right the game is dead and should probably more like guild wars now, you know where u dont pay for it.
May the force be with you
quit shorly before CU for a few months i had been in a bad house fire that destroyed my left lung in august 2003 so i had been on the sick for some time afterwards during that time when not at physio or hospital appointments i was locked in my own littl world of self pity in SWG playing about 10-14 hrs a day if not 24 hrs at times and i had pardon the pun burnt myself out on it.
i had a little 2 -3 month sebatacle and got my head sorted an back working when i returned it was no longer my life but just a game and i wholeheartedly enjoyed the CU final moment came with the NGE a complete bastardisation of the game to see my friends list drop from 250 active players to about 10 in the space of a week so i decided to quit.
So other veteran players aren't "true" vets? You do realize how this makes you sound don't you?
Someone who left half way through the vietnam war isn't as much of a vet as someone who stayed with his fellow comrades and fought it out.
Damn you SOE!
They treated the players bad.

Very soon after the NGE because my toons were no longer playable as I had intended and designed them to be.
Also because as a customer I dislike being treated with utter contempt.
Proud Master CH -
Sorry,
Proud FORMER Master CH...
my toon was untimely converted into something more Star Warsy
This game is still beta 1.

I quit a month or so after NGE when it was clear no one was coming back. I left with the community, I'll come back when they do.
See you in the dream..
The Fires from heaven, now as cold as ice. A rapid ascension tolls a heavy price.
