Winter... you sound like a hater. Everything Gameloading said was true. IF the game doesn't deliver on everything they have said, cool. As of right now, though, this game is not a grinder. It's being made for worldwide appeal and has quests for XP (western style). It has WASD movement and the combat seems much different than L2 and clones.
As for OPs question... I doubt Aion will beat WAR. WAR has been releasing a whole lot more info and footage of their game. Also, many people assume Aion will be another "Korean grindfest." You know, the typical ignorance that has been going on forever. Winter is a perfect example of this.
I will definitely be trying both, but I'm pretty sure I will be sticking with WAR. Most of my friends will be playing that, and I can't play 2 MMOs at the same time.
The game is currently selling itself on graphics and flying as per its official website. Neither of those things inspire confidence that this game will be anything more than another Korean grinder. Awesome graphics, definitely, but deep gameplay? Doubtful. I am beginning to think Korean games are incapable of providing that to Western audiences, as they seem to focus on beauty (and lack of character customization...they seem to love uniformity), simplicity, weird quirks, and mass monster rape with few other endeavours. But, right now I am only going upon what little information exists. Still, if they want to hook someone who cares about how the game plays rather than how easily one can jack off to pretty anime characters while pretending to be some emo angel, they should tout real gameplay features and what the point of the game is. Anyway, my prediction is that Aion does poorly here but cleans house in Asia, while WAR does well here but does poorly in Asia. No foreign MMO has ever done well in the monthly subscription market here, and I do not foresee a change soon. The fundamental differences between us and them in terms of MMO preferences are very hard to bridge. edit: Furthermore, with great graphics comes great system requirements. The higher those go, the fewer potential customers you have. In Asia, this is not a large deal, because most people play at cybercafes that have great gaming rigs. Here, it is a big deal, because not everyone is going to have a machine capable of running "cutting-edge" games and we do not have that cybercafe culture. One of the reasons WoW did well was that it could be run on almost any computer. WAR is following a similar path, with graphics that get the job done but are certainly not cutting-edge.
So to sum it up, you only went to the official website, did not look for any articles, did not bother to check any gameplay videos and basicly just pull the stereotype card?
If you HAD done any research you would have known.
- The game is build for a western and asian CASUAL audience. this already rules out any korean grinding.
- The game is build on WASD movement as opposed to point & click. while this doesn't say anything about grinding, it does show who the audience is.
- NCsoft has been advertising the game as a non - grinding MMORPG from the very beginning, look up at IGN.
- developers have said that they want to avoid number grinding as much as possible, they even rejected ideas like the WoW honor system because it involved grinding
- Developers have said in an interview that fighting monsters is definitly not the only thing you will be doing, there will be a large focus on world interaction, crafting and even playerhousing.
everything I have said here can be looked up and backed up by official information from NCsoft.
Aion is selling itself on much more than just graphics and flying. Something you would have known if you actually did a bit of research.
No foreign mmorpg has ever done well here? What a joke, Lineage 2 has been doing well for YEARS and outperforms many wetsern MMORPG's in terms of subscribers.
1) how do you figure? I can casually gind out hundereds of low con critters may only take a hour or two (play 2 moons?) but its still a grind just maybe not a Hardcore raid grind ( Try reading instead of jumping to conculsions.)
Except thats not considered casual. Casual is considered a game in which you can accomplish something in a short amount of time. What you described is not casual. Fail.
2) One can have WASD movement and still be a huge grindfest. Your just wasting our time with this one while Koreans tend to excel in grind type of games there are western grind games like oh say early EQ. (hell even WoW's a grind game to me with the end game raid / faction grinds)
It was meant to show you that its silly to consider it a korean grindfest when its aimed at a western audience, how about you actually read for a change hm?
3) Um NCsoft is the publisher not the developer. Its not on the OFFICIAL site. The reason they call a site OFFICIAL is because thats were your most likely to get the official word and not just hype. Though in truth just look around at say Vanguard They Promised a ton of stuff many even listed on the box. Did it deliver even half of it on release? Do you believe everything thats advertised??? (hehe would explain why you bet your bank account)
NCSoft is the Publisher AND developer, Aion is developed by NCsoft seoul studios. You have done so little research you didn't even know NCsoft is the developer? thats just unbelievable. Lets see, what should I believe.
1: Official information from NCsoft developers
2: Winter who pulled stuff out of his ass
yup, I'll go for number 1.
4) Number systems do not = grinding. Grinding in most MMORPG's consists of doing repative actions over and over (like killing hundreds of mobs, or making a thousand nicknaks) to reach a certain goal. Once again your wasting our time with a fluff agruement that has nothing to do with real point
and here we go over the absolute basics of mmorpg, kids.
Number one: Why do we grind? For experience points.
what are are experience points? A number required to level up.
number grinding = doing the same thing over and over again.
5) once again grinding is not just killing monsters its any massively repetative action, mining resoures over and over, making a thousand chairs, etc etc are all grinds the only different is its a craft level/skill grind compared to say a adventuring skill/level grind. The main thing with grinding is its a repetative action that soon becomes fairly boring for many. And the only reason to do those repetive things it to increase a number, which NCsoft is trying to avoid. 6) Ncsoft is not the developer and really you can't say they are official that once again would be things pretaining to the official site which you seem to dislike and not visit. Ncsofts job is to market the game and keep the servers operational (depending on contract and agreements generally speaking) As such they would promise you the moon if it would sell the game and they thought they could get away with it. (Once again check out vanguard or even AO on release.) NCsoft is the developer. EPIC fail. also your arguement is silly. Vanguard and AO both were developed by studio's with a rather limited budget. they had to push out. Most of those things that were promised in vanguard are scheduled to be implanted at a later date because of the lack of funds. Had the game had enough funds, those things would have been implanted on time. So while those things aren't implanted in Vanguard now, they eventually will be. Lastly you bought the hype (much like the OP who believe everyone with a opinion different then his is a dumbass). You believe everything a non-official site has told you hook line and sinker without ever playing the game. Guess you've never bought a game that didn't delivery and live up to the hype. (lucky you) The information was taken from a non - official site, but it was an interview with a developer of the game. I believe it because I find that a developer has a lot more credibility than you do. You haven't proved you know anything just that you believe everything you hear and as such I'd have to say your a Tool You have made a whole bunch of assumptions and accept it as fact. there is not a word to describe you. Linage2 as Sornin said is not doing WELL its doing average in the US look it up and compare it to say the top 3-4 western MMORPG's. As a example take DAoC (made by Mythic that is making WAR) its done better in western sells then linage2. Newsflash: Lineage 2's subscriber base is currently larger than Dark Age of camelots, as well as MXO, D&DO,D&L,Horizons,Everquest, UO and I can go on.
Also you totally glossed over the very real point that Hgih level graphics tend to require better computers and graphic cards this does further limite Aion's customer base. (Hell VG might well have the best graphics but since it still runs like a slug on recommended systems most people will never know) I don't think anyones agrueing that Aoin has nice high detail pretty graphics and if thats all thats important to you and you have the computer that can run it have fun. (oh but you still owe Sornin that dollar and 25 cents you have in your bank account ) Didn't you read Sornins post? the reason he spoke against AIon is BECAUSE it was korean.
the simple fact of the matter is that you have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to argue with, you're pulling stuff out of your ass. EVERYTHING I have said is backed up by official information from NCsoft,if you want I can show you the sources.
The problem with you is that you look at the game and think "its going to be like this and that" completely ignorning anything the developers have said. you have NOTHING to back up that the developers of the game are downright lying, absolutely nothing
I suggest you do a bit more research on the game. To start with, you might actually learn who is developing Aion. you are so completely clueless about this game you didn't even know that. You must probably find it difficult to even convince yourself you have any credibility left.
"Aion: Tower of Eternity (commonly referred to as Aion) (Korean: ???) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) in development by NCsoft"
Ofcourse I'm sure you're going to pull the wikipedia card, so here is more for you:
"An original, expansive MMORPG by NCsoft’s Seoul development studios"
Honnestly, just do yourself a favor and walk away from this thread. you have nothing to back up your claims, absolutely nothing. I have official information from NCsoft that I can show you whenever you want me to. give me a call and I'll post the links.
Aion beating WAR i doubt it but you never know. But with WAR you looking at 3 powerhouse companies EA the company that has tons of money to invest in the game. Games Workshop which carry the franchise name of Warhammer which alot people loves. Then there is Mythic that alrdy made a great PVP/RVR game so there is the skill to make this game successful. Now will Aion match that no one really know but I doubt they would reach that.

I am not going to start some quote war (mostly because tracking them using MMORPG's quoting system gets tedious after the first few), but I will respond to a couple things.
Firstly, I did look to other sources for information. I also went to www.aionsource.com (that proved to be fairly useless) and looked for some articles. I did not dig up much, and was not about to spend three hours researching a game when all that research is based upon only one thing - what developers/fans say, which is all talk, no substance, and most of it is vague.
This information is inherently biased and difficult to believe - I am not saying it is false, but it is also not verifiable. Someone showing me Aion videos that are not made by NCSoft to look like a movie trailer would help. Videos that showed off normal gameplay and full battles, start to finish. Interactions with NPCs, quests, etc. Even spoken information that gave actual implementation details would be nice. Things like, "PvPvE manages complex relationships" and "world interactivity" sound all well and good, but it is the how that matters. How are these things going to be done? Why are they done? Answering these things is important, else it is just promiseware.
Dark and Light promised a lot, as did Vanguard. If the games were what they said they would be, we'd all be playing them because they were self-hyped to be amazing.
By the way, most information I did read centred around two things: graphics and flying. Again, this does not impress me. Yes, the graphics are gorgeous, in the Korean style, anyway, but I barely care. I'd rather someone describe the basic mechanics of the game rather than how nice things look.
Secondly, Aion has a precedent - the dozens of grinders that came before it, many from NCSoft itself. Thus far, it has done nothing to show it will be vastly different, and for it to be good, the difference will need to be vast. We will not accept a game that is a dressed up whack-a-mole like so many others. There needs to be compelling layers of gameplay that shift focus away from just whacking monsters for the sake of whacking monsters. I do not hate Aion because it is Korean, I doubt it because it is Korean and has not proved it is shedding Asian gameplay - if it does, I will change my opinion.
Still, I am sure Aion will kick ass in Asia, and WAR will fight for the number 2 spot with AoC here (though I think WAR will beat out AoC). Aion here...I am not sure. Better than Lineage 2, I would hope, if only because it is newer. But beat out WAR in numbers? Very doubtful, as WAR is a western game built on a western IP and designed for a western audience. Aion can claim to be built for everyone, but it is rather hard to please everyone at once.
I am not going to start some quote war (mostly because tracking them using MMORPG's quoting system gets tedious after the first few), but I will respond to a couple things.
You're right, first time I'm trying this. Thought I'd help out by graying out the quote a bit.

I agree, there's no great, collected & updated resource for information out there. That doesn't make it a bad game though. As someone who has followed the development for quite some time, i have to say that much of what Gameloading is saying is actually true. Developers have time after time stated how they are aware of the image many in the west have of "Korean Grinders" and they are really working not to go there. This is not based on any vague fan opinions. It was said in video interviews with Korean developers themselves. I'm sure someone can dig up a link if that's necessary. There is substance. The information is hard to find though, and that's probably the main problem and something ncsoft has to improve in my opinion.
This information is inherently biased and difficult to believe - I am not saying it is false, but it is also not verifiable. To be honest i don't think development has gotten far enough, and the dev team is probably careful to show anything that's not polished. It's sort of the opposite marketing of WAR - which is admittedly well done by EA/Mythic. In WAR everything is thrown out as soon as it's done. I like that style. Aion doesn't use it, though. And not too many other games i know of either.
I'd rather someone describe the basic mechanics of the game rather than how nice things look.
if you ask me, i think the graphics have been hyped so much because (1) of course they are no question in forefront of the area, but more especially (2) the rest might not be entirely done yet - referring back to my last statement about the devs not wanting to show unfinished parts of the game. - I obviously dont mean that "everything we havent seen is unfinished", but maybe parts of it. Parts of it is probably also bad marketing. We're looking at, well, maybe a Q2 2008 release, after all. Its a while after WAR afaik.
Okay, you were reasonable in your statements but this is just not fair. The only "grinders" i know ncsoft made are Lineage and Lineage II - and they never claimed to be anything else. Aion, however (and i think you've been over this too many times already in this thread) specifically claims not to be one. How's that for a starter? they've got a good budget i assume, and they know where they're heading. There's no reason to think they're just dropping that in the last minute. Instead of judging for not finding enough information on what you want, stick around and wait for something more. I know you like the graphics - now wait for the rest and see if you like it too. I mean, why not? It doesn't take too much time to check by once every month or so
Still, I am sure Aion will kick ass in Asia, and WAR will fight for the number 2 spot with AoC here (though I think WAR will beat out AoC). Aion here...I am not sure. Better than Lineage 2, I would hope, if only because it is newer. But beat out WAR in numbers? Very doubtful, as WAR is a western game built on a western IP and designed for a western audience. WAR will probably outnumber Aion here.. i think you are right. But just please stop with the comments about it being a grinder. That's exactly the attitude that will make more people think the same, without doing any research. Heck, i've been reading around on some boards and it seems someone started a rumor that chinese farmers "were already playing aion and making gold". Obviously some didn't investigate and left the "table", having assimilated that same opinion (It would be impossible since closed beta hasn't begun yet, but clearly shows the power of rumors and misinformation).
Final words - korean markets and european market are growing closer and closer. Look at WoW. That's a common comparison since "everyone" is playing "everywhere" (it makes me sad). It has to show at least a little that coming generations of korean-produced games need to keep a higher bar of content and playerfriendliness in order to be able to compete... am i right?
Thank you for tuning in to Caladon radio, straight from the pits of Arcanum (man, that was a freakin good game, wasn't it? :P)
Secondly, Aion has a precedent - the dozens of grinders that came before it, many from NCSoft itself.
NCsoft has only developed 2 mmorpgs itself. Lineage and Lineage 2. They have explained that they are looking for a new franchise, it wouldn't even make sense to create another Lineage grinder like game, since it would only compete with itself.
Anyway I don't expect Aion to beat WaR number wise and couldn't care less either. Let the haters go to WaR (ha get it?) with themselves and leave us the gorgeous world of Atreia to explore and fight over. See you in the Abyss, or the in crafting hall/center ^_^
FFXI is an asian game that is still doing great in the west, and Aion should actually be solo friendlier then that game... It still stuns me how people who won't bother to research a game actually post in these forums anyway. I have zero interest in Pirates of the Burning Sea, or Warhammer, or Age of Conan, and you don't see me post there either do you?
Ok, comparing Aion to past games that made certain claims is stupid. The claim that everyone is really arguing about is if it will be a grinder. How ridiculous of a claim could that be? I'm pretty sure it's easy to make sure a game is not a grinder. Either you make a game based on grinding mobs over and over, usually find a spot, call it a camp, have one of your party members pull mobs to the camp, OR you make a game based on quests + mob kills for exp. Either make some good items incredibly hard to get, or make them a little easier to get. I'm sure you get the picture. Nobody is making outrageous claims about Aion here.
dont expect to see much non-NCSoft footage since, AFAIK, they're not even in beta in Korea.
From what I've seen Aion will probably have much higher system requirements than WAR. Aion also has a more distinct personality than WAR, which is really just basic, generic fantasy. Both of these factors will limit Aion's fans. Not everyone will have a system that can handle Aion, and some people will dislike Aion's setting. With WAR, there's nothing really to like or dislike so it will have more popular appeal. So, I don't think it's likely Aion will beat WAR in population.
Worldwide - Aion will have a much higher number of players than WAR. I'm sure Aion will be a huge hit in Asia.
WAR is going to be mostly a western game, so I doubt that it will hit it big in the Asian market. The only reason WoW hit it big over there is because they already had a HUGE fanbase with the Warcraft series. I could be wrong about this, but I don't think there is much demand for Warhammer stuff in Asia.
Western World - War will have a much higher amount of players than Aion. I'm not saying Aion won't be successful, because I think it will do very well. I just don't think there will be as much of a following as Warhammer has.
- - "What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?" - -
I just hope there will be a good comunity in Aion, and I hope alot of the "hype" people go and play WAR so I can enjoy Aion.
And I also hope for NO spamming selling gold/powerleveling in Aion. I got a good feling about Aion though, and I just love that they are using the Crysis engine aka Farcry engine for the game. As I see it it all comes down to "playability" in the end for me and what game I choose to play and stay in. And also the Avatar building is very important to get a feeling you got your very own Avatar. Also I would like to see less grinding 24/7 and insted some intressting gameplay ( that means dont make it like Lineage 2).
And its intresssting to see that Asian and the European NC soft are working together on this game, from what I heard and read
Blw everyone that says Korean games have cookie cutter lookin charatures that look the same, please refer to City of Heros and find a game with more custumizing. Perfect world comes close(hmmm another korean game). Most korean games that i have played are truefully F2P crap, but most of the the games you have to pay for are well done. NCsoft has a pretty good record producing games(tabula rasa not withstanding) so it might do well. One last thing is how many ppl might not move to WAR because it "copied" WOW and they don't want to start all over in a new game that is so similar. (yes i know Games workshop is over 25 years old)
Actually Perfect World is Chinese and CoX is American (I'm pretty sure Cryptic Studios is American). Either way, people need to stop hating on games just cuz it's from Asia!
No Aion will definetly not beat WAR in population. But Aion will beat WAR on the quality of players. WAR players = wow players. Ends there really
QFT.
Alot of WoW players are quitting wow for WAR. Have yet to see anyone mention aion.
Personally I think war look way to childish. As it's PvP based it will most likely attract the PvP player base from WoW. Thoose who spend all day whining about nerfs on the forums etc.
I just wanted to add ... I have seen a WAR demo in person. It was NOT impressive. Not terrible either, but nothing about it made me want to pull out my credit card. I think DAoC is actually a much better game (and I haven't played DAoC in years).
Thats odd cause all the general chat that i mention Aion in every knows about it and is looking forward to it. My guild has high hopes for this game but nothing can be said for certian about anything in reguards to this game till open beta until then its all speculation.
Aion will beat WAR in every possible way and don't forget Aion is anti-grind! a lot of people seem to forget that because NCsoft is Korean. And to be honest, i doubt WAR will be so great... graphics are far from impressive, they didn't even make their own lore, Games-Workshop did it for them, to me the makers op WAR (EA) are just lazy...
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.
Aion will beat WAR in every possible way and don't forget Aion is anti-grind! a lot of people seem to forget that because NCsoft is Korean.
It's not entirely grind free, it's just not as intensive as other Korean games, it's said to be between FFXI and WoW in terms of grind, also you probably don't need to be grouped if you don't want to.
No Aion will definetly not beat WAR in population. But Aion will beat WAR on the quality of players. WAR players = wow players. Ends there really

Lol...saying "alot of WoW players are quitting for WAR" is way too much of a blanket statement. Now, I don't doubt that you may know a few...but it can just a easy be said that alot of people who are quitting WoW...if sticking to the MMO genre will obviously be moving to equally hyped other games like AoC and Aion plus many many more.
Lol...it is MY view that the folks who play WoW are no different than the folks who play any other MMO on the market. To think differently imo your walking that fine line between elitist asshole and someone who generally doesn't like the game because it doesn't give them what they can/want to deal with.
The fact of the matter is your using your view of particular things you may have heard or read...then placing these small snippets on the backs of "ALOT" to juice your view up with numbers and can not or at least should not speak for anyone but yourself. My only proof of this is that many of my friends who are into MMO gaming know about both of these games. Want to try both of these games.
Now if I may take a glimpse into foresight, I personally believe both games will do rather well, and I could give a shit who pulls in better numbers. That is gonna be left up to actual fact and not what I think may happen....one will beat the other out, or not..or tie. We do know that...who cares about it till then?
A lot of ppl like WAR, but if Aion is Advertised well enough , in the Official Release, it should OWN war... like a little puppy...
To be very honest and frank here., it is way too early to tell. The way games are being held back and jocking for release position for 2008, Aion may not see the light of day until Q 1 or 2 2009.
Additionally, why does it matter how many play Game x or Game y? Enjoy the game that you have invested money and time. NOw, maybe this is advise coming from an adult here that understands that these games are not real, but an escape for a time away from th maddening real world. But, generally, I don't give 2 buckets of spit about who has the most subscriptions.
Just relax and enjoy the game you want to play and don't get suckered into an immature gaming discussion about which game is better.

I will definitely be trying both, but I'm pretty sure I will be sticking with WAR. Most of my friends will be playing that, and I can't play 2 MMOs at the same time.

Here, I'll help you out a bit.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aion_(computer_game)
"Aion: Tower of Eternity (commonly referred to as Aion) (Korean: ???) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) in development by NCsoft"
Ofcourse I'm sure you're going to pull the wikipedia card, so here is more for you:
http://pc.ign.com/objects/822/822535.html

"America is not at war, the US Military is at war, America is at the mall."

Either way, people need to stop hating on games just cuz it's from Asia!
ookay everyone...
Thanks for the Many replies and Votes !

Howcome Everytime I make a post, i get a bijillion Responses ! lol
Thanks anyways.

Alot of WoW players are quitting wow for WAR. Have yet to see anyone mention aion.
Personally I think war look way to childish. As it's PvP based it will most likely attract the PvP player base from WoW. Thoose who spend all day whining about nerfs on the forums etc.
Don't even think I will try the beta tbh.
I just wanted to add ... I have seen a WAR demo in person. It was NOT impressive. Not terrible either, but nothing about it made me want to pull out my credit card. I think DAoC is actually a much better game (and I haven't played DAoC in years).
Winter, altho your obviously a troll, I would say if you realy think this is a grind game (wich is not and has been proved countless of times)
Then by all means, dont play it, you will not be missed.
With that said..
For warhammer online, it seems like WoW v2.0 im sure it wil easy atract alot of bored WoW players to this game.
Aion isnt realy well known, I talked abouth in general/guild/party chat all the time and most people dont even know what Aion is.
So I would guese WAR wil have alot of subs at the start since its comming sooner.
I really doubt a game thats getting as much hype as warhammercraft is going to be beat by this game in population size.
It's not entirely grind free, it's just not as intensive as other Korean games, it's said to be between FFXI and WoW in terms of grind, also you probably don't need to be grouped if you don't want to.
(,,,)=^__^=(,,,)
WAR in the west and in Europe, in the east I'm not so sure. That's the toss up.
