The reason why DF will work is because it isn't the typical linear game like Vanguard, WOW etc(here you use a failure, and a casual game that most people in this community dislike). People say that open FFA PvP wont work but this is completely wrong(You say that it's "completely wrong" yet you give us no evidence to why it wouldn't). This game will cater for all the players out there who are sick of the linear based(You make linear based MMOs sound generally bad, but still some would prefer the balance) mmo's with no real way to influence your environment. EVE(EVE, a relatively popular game in this community as opposed to VG and WoW) has proven that this can work. I remember when it came out there were loads of critics because they said there was nothing to do. Now there are corporations with hundreds of players controlling vast systems and having epic battles. Players have made this game not the developers(And you imply that the same will happen in DF). Players who love WOW, Vanguard and the like probably will hate DF (Again, referring to DF as the opposite of the some games which are disliked in this community) and not play it but for the rest of us it is exactly what we want. So fans of DF really cant tell WOW fans (here it implies that people who dislike DF are WoW fans) that this is the best game ever and vice versa. Its a completely different type of MMO and you cant compare them.
This is just a response to my own post about sensationalism, I'm not trying to imply that you meant to say it like this.
I like these forums better than the official forums because they are impartial. The official forums are so overrun by fanboys that you can't have a real discussion there. In these forums you can have a real discussion about the positives and the negatives of a game.
Much like these forums are overrun by vaporware sayers that it creates the same thing.
Actually ithese forums are pretty balanced between the fanbois and the trolls
I would only call a couple of people on the forums fanbois most are usually in the middle and there has been more vapor-sayers on the forum than fanbois.
(Also as to not cause confusion someone supporting DF != fanboi)
Umm, actually here I agree with you. Except with your obviously sarcastic finish. The only people who I find "fanbois" are those who defend a game zealously. If you bash another game like WAR or AoC because there isn't PvP anywhere, any time, any way and call it care bear, I find that Fanboi. Not that I have seen you personally make any of those comments, but many have. If you support DF, and are genuinely or artificially moderate in your comments and views, then you are a fan. I don't obsess about RvR in WAR or GvG in AoC, because I'm a cynical bastard, and assume that each will only be good at best. If DF were to come out I probably wouldn't get it for a couple of reasons, but it does look like it has the potential to be a good game. Anyways back on to my topic then. The difference between fan and fanboi is "I prefer the idea of a skill based system" and "Class based systems are just developers taking the easy way out, and conforming to the casual majority". Another example being "I think that a FPS combat system would increase the pace of the combat" and "Wait, attack, wait, attack, combat is for people with no skill. It has no merit and just prolongs the grind". That's the difference. I have seen DF fans who are actually fans, but the majority seem to be fanatics.
I dont know what was sarcastic about the finish since "!=" means "not equal to" was that what you were talking about? Yes some seem to be fantacal.
Sorry, I'm not so "hip" one the internet lingo, which is why I write the way I do on "vidja game" forums. I thought you just meant equal. Discount that whole thing then.

I just need to add to my post about all my WoW playing friends hating the concept of Darkfall.
They do.
This is no personal veiw or opinion. All real life friends i have that are playing WoW or LOTRO hates DF.
I have had so many long discussions over the past years, i also mentioned that Chronicles of Spellborn is not itembased......same thing there.....they now hate that to.
People say they are looking for a none skill based game thats got btr grfcs then uo yet people are hating on darkfall .Darfall has the skilled base crap you guys are whinning about and its got great graphics...........yet still people say its some horible game........what the hell? Dont get me wrong i love dark fall but please tell me why everyone HATES Darkfall so much.........
maybe because its been in development since 2002 and has jack to show for it? Yet all the fanboys claim its the next coming of Christ? People don't hate Darkfall - they hate it's broken promises and unwarranted hype.
LOL Thats what im trying to tell them. How cant someone enjoy more features in a MMO? Why would that be a bad thing? Its a crazy world.
Well lets see, uhm, Vanguard has tons of features but it's a piece of crap.
SWG pre NGE had an incredible amount of features, in fact it had alot of the stuff Darkfall names as being "new" and "cool" such as players being able to teach skills.
Star wars is a much bigger franchise and has a much stronger following too.
I haven't seen a single thing about darkfall that makes me believe everything they promise, especially after all this time.
I'll save you some time in replying to my post by replying for you with the basic fanboy response.
"NO cause, they said it's got this and that, and I saw a video with this in it, and it's going to be the BEST game ever!"
Hmm......we were not talking about it beeing vaporware or not.
Just features. And Vanguard. My WoW friends kept talking about it for years to....i never felt it sounded anything special at all. It was still levels and classes.
But about the DF features, they dont even like the whole concept about the game. Weird?

Don't get me wrong the concept sounds great. (granted it won't last in that current state for long) The constant PVP is a really good idea in theory but without "safe" zones I just see way too much crying, griefing and ganking. Personally I could deal with it. But then it just comes down to whoever has the strongest level skills can just pick on the weak. It will still turn into a grind fest, as sad as that is. And I know there aren't any "levels" per se but there are skill levels so it's kinda the same thing.
In SWG, if you had to level up rifleman XP, basically you had to use a rifle, so you could just make a macro to just sit and shoot all day. Now I'm not saying this game will allow recursive macro's or the combat system will even allow something like that, but if there's an exploit people will find it to get an edge on someone else, and in a game with no "safe" zones, it's going to hurt alot of noobs. Especially if they lose all their items everytime someone ganks them, it's just bad business.
Now keep in mind I only have a grade 2 understanding of this game, I've only readthe information on the site, and I don't usually read forums, so if theres something I'm missing about the PVP play please correct me.

The skill levels arent the determining factor if you win or lose the fight more like giving you an edge. Most games that are "Skill-based" are usually what you described based on the avatar skills and not that of the players.

Well it's not going to be "fully" open PvP as there will be consequences for your actions. The more you just gank people the stiffer the consequences will be. For one thing if you kill someone in town the guards aren't gonna like you very much and if you acquire enough evil alignment gaurds and other NPC's aren't going to think twice about killing you. Not to mention if you kill enough noobs your eventually gonna gank one with some higher skill level friends that are gonna come and hand you your ass with gravy. This should work like the karma system from L2 only with more depth to it. This is why to be a murderous dog will take a lot more skill and be harder then to just toe the line so-to-speak. Now this doesn't mean that there won't be players that PK others just that I don't think the game will be a total gank fest 24/7.
I am optimistic about this game and have been following it for a while now. I just hope that it makes it out soon with at least most of the features they've promised in tact.

I don't know how they wouldn't be a determining factor though. I mean a noob with skill level 1 in "slash" and a guy with skill level 25 in "slash" would be two different things basically. I mean it's obvious the guy with the higher skill level will win, thats all I'm really saying.
An out of the box character won't be able to take on the kind of people that will be strong enough to raid a town. But I'm still curious to see how all this will play out.

Its not as obvious as it might seem. DF's combat is supposed to be very similar to Mount and Blade. Now if the noob had a better grasp of when to attack and defend than it could very well be the noob who wins. Momentum is supposed to affect the damage of attacks so if the noob jumps from a tree or charges at him it will do more damage than if he was standing still or backing up while attacking. If the guy with the higher slash skill charges and the noob does a quick sidestep than he opens himself up for a few hits from the noob before he can actually do anything about it.
Now if a group of people had 100 in slashing and a group of seasoned vets had just rerolled and had 1 I would place my bets on those who are more familiar with DF combat no matter what the skill level.
I would suggest playing M&B since it could give a better idea of what im talking about.

I'm all for Mount and Blade combat, if they fixed certain things about it. Like how you can't fight back against more than one person at a time. He has a point, if the skill levels were out of let's say 50, the noob has skill level one and the other person has 25. Then, in that case, even if the noob has a better grasp of the combat system his attacks will do less. I'm not a fan of momentum, because from the games I've played, even without the bunny hopping, people just run in circles and slash at you. Wouldn't work in reality, because you'd get exhausted, so if you add momentum and running wouldn't damage stamina. That would just be asking for people to run in circles around you. For the most part though, I really do like the M&B system, because even at equal skill, maybe even worse equipment, you can still take out 3-4 guys just based on battle conditions and player skill. If DF's combat actually turns out to be like M&B's then that'll be a huge plus for me. Just keep stuff like D&L in mind, devs who seem like they're honestly trying to give you the world, might just be biting off more than they can chew.
"Now if a group of people had 100 in slashing and a group of seasoned vets had just rerolled and had 1 I would place my bets on those who are more familiar with DF combat no matter what the skill level."
I would place my money on those with a skill of 100, if the groups were of equal sizes. Because, if you were to have a character with 100 skill, then they have to be decent to say the least. They'd have to have enough skill to kill someone of relatively equal skill level to get to where they are. Your player skill increases as you character's skill level increases to a degree. That's why I'd put up a group of people with 10-30% less player skill and 100% more character skill above a group of rerolled vet's. If you just bought an account (the bastards) then I'd put my money somewhere in between, because in M&B even with an incredible level of player skill, it's hard to take a new char up against a knight.
I don't know how they wouldn't be a determining factor though. I mean a noob with skill level 1 in "slash" and a guy with skill level 25 in "slash" would be two different things basically. I mean it's obvious the guy with the higher skill level will win, thats all I'm really saying.

Yea i dont like the whole only one person at a time either because thats what always gets me killed. Yea his attacks will do less but not so much less that he's not a threat on the field. Also in a 1v1 they might circle but i think that is what is expected since in combat attacking where their undefended is always the best bet. They said they would have a stamina bar so there won't be any bunny hopers.
Also you can gain skill levels without even getting close to real combat. Its usually called sparring.
Don't get me wrong the concept sounds great. No argument about that, my problem is if they're going to deliver on their promises, or release the game at all (granted it won't last in that current state for long)Please explain The constant PVP is a really good idea in theory but without "safe" zones I just see way too much crying, griefing and ganking While conceptually there are not "safe" zones you could probably just go somewhere where you have a lot of friends or protection. Personally I could deal with it. But then it just comes down to whoever has the strongest level skills can just pick on the weak If it actually does turn out like M&B then skill levels will either provide an edge in combat, or a gimmick, skill is actually a requirement as much as strategy in that game. Instead of the usual, all strategy MMO. . It will still turn into a grind fest,Maybe as sad as that is. And I know there aren't any "levels" per say It's the same thing, except it's all micro leveling but there are skill levels so it's kinda the same thing Exactly.
In SWG, if you had to level up rifleman XP, basically you had to use a rifle, so you could just make a macro to just sit and shoot all day I can see this happening. Now I'm not saying this game will allow recursive macro's or the combat system will even allow something like that, but if there's an exploit people will find it to get an edge on someone else Happens in all games, and in a game with no "safe" zones, it's going to hurt a lot of noobs. Especially if they lose all their items every time someone ganks them Only a problem if the items are valuable, which I hope they are not, especially for noobs., it's just bad business. Also in a 1v1 they might circle but i think that is what is expected since in combat attacking where their undefended is always the best bet. Except running and slashing would do quite a number on you, ever try to run and swing a weapon with some precision and strength over and over. It's hard as hell (broom stick fights). After about a minute of it, if you're giving it your all, you should be exhausted. Even if you're not using a 5-10 pound sword, a 20-40 pound shield, and 100 pounds of armor. I just hope that you don't regain stamina while running, and that you lose it for attacking (not sure if they have this) They said they would have a stamina bar so there won't be any bunny hopers. I'm aware of this.
Also you can gain skill levels without even getting close to real combat. Its usually called sparring. This, I think could be bad. Because then people will max out their skills without actually having to play the game. Level grinding on your friends.

Yea his attacks will do less but not so much less that he's not a threat on the field. This would be a guess though, a skill level might actually do a lot. They've said that they've wanted player skill to be the overall determining factor in winning a battle so to say that having low skill still makes him viable wouldn't seem to far off. Also in a 1v1 they might circle but i think that is what is expected since in combat attacking where their undefended is always the best bet. I mean soldiers in those times were supposed to be trained to be able to swing and hold a sword for 1-2 hours straight. I would think that they would lose stamina for running and for attacking or at very least dont let it recover while doing it. They said they would have a stamina bar so there won't be any bunny hopers. I'm aware of this. Also you can gain skill levels without even getting close to real combat. Its usually called sparring. This, I think could be bad. Because then people will max out their skills without actually having to play the game. Level grinding on your friends. Sure but there is no substitute for real combat expierence. What might work on your friends doesnt necessarily mean its going to work on the enemy.

Sorry, I'm not so "hip" one the internet lingo, which is why I write the way I do on "vidja game" forums. I thought you just meant equal. Discount that whole thing then.
Some people just need to realize the day of MMO gaming is over and you just don't like the genre anymore.

yeah well this would be true if I couldnt still play UO, EVE, Starport. so the genre isn;t over- its just that the genre is overrun with 'clones'

No argument there, that is very true.

meh if they dont want to play im not going to force them heh
I just need to add to my post about all my WoW playing friends hating the concept of Darkfall.
They do.
This is no personal veiw or opinion. All real life friends i have that are playing WoW or LOTRO hates DF.
I have had so many long discussions over the past years, i also mentioned that Chronicles of Spellborn is not itembased......same thing there.....they now hate that to.
once they see the game in action they will coem running
LOL
Thats what im trying to tell them. How cant someone enjoy more features in a MMO? Why would that be a bad thing?
Its a crazy world.
meh dont worry about it until beta starts
maybe because its been in development since 2002 and has jack to show for it? Yet all the fanboys claim its the next coming of Christ? People don't hate Darkfall - they hate it's broken promises and unwarranted hype.
Keep dreaming.
Hmm......we were not talking about it beeing vaporware or not.
Just features. And Vanguard. My WoW friends kept talking about it for years to....i never felt it sounded anything special at all. It was still levels and classes.
But about the DF features, they dont even like the whole concept about the game. Weird?
Even still I would play the beta of this game

I would suggest playing M&B since it could give a better idea of what im talking about.

I think Shadowbane 2 should be made already.
I would suggest playing M&B since it could give a better idea of what im talking about.
