There are several sites which track MMORPG populations out there. Google it, Last one I saw, and It hasnt been updated in a while was at http://www.mmogchart.com/
Based on that data (old as it may be) Lineage was a solid #2.

Hahah thanks.
Darn it, how could've I forgotten about Lineage & L2.. also to be honest, I had no idea that RuneScape was THAT popular :P

Well in that chart EQ2 has a 1.4% market share....less then EQ1.
Lineage II, and then RuneScape. I'm not sure about Lineage, though. I think it may be ahead of L2.

The notion that graphics, or anything else for that matter, are anywhere near as important as gameplay/fun is so utterly ridiculous that anyone who shares such a view should be placed in an asylum.
Runescape is number 2 from a population standpoint. This page lists Habbo Hotel as #2, but that's not a traditional MMO. The list is from June and likely hasn't changed much.

That is fairly old, however, it's tough to see anybody overtaking Lineage and Lineage II. Might be Lineage II by now, not sure. Everquest II and Star Wars: Galaxies, fairly obviously aren't even in the running.
Lotro is second largest as far as Western developed MMOs go, with FFXI (albeit Japanese) coming in third if the rumors are to be believed. If you look at the Asian market though (Korea and China) there are about 50 or so that have over 1mil active users, though I think only Lineage 2 works on a subscription model out of all of them. They also fudge their figures, according to latest reports Dofus has 80mil users, however I'm sure they count me in that and I only played for a month at release.
Infact the only accurate figures over the last three years are from NCSoft (Lineage 1&2, CoH/CoV etc), Blizzard (WoW) and CCP (Eve). Every other company that publishes in NA and EU do not disclose subscriber figures and most of the Asian publishers lie through their teeth about numbers.
Any estimates? Oh and I mean a subscription based MMO.
That would be apples to oranges since less then half of WoW’s accounts pay a subscription. You would also be excluding Lineage and Lineage II which are probability the second and third most profitable MMO’s because they are mostly pay per hour.
WoW still leads in subscriptions, either LotRO or FFXI (? I think it’s primarily subscription based) is probability #2 with EQ1, EQ2 and EvE coming in a little behind that.
The pay per hour market in Asia is harder to judge. WoW is very cheep in China but has fewer accounts then some free games. (People still pay internet café fees to play them) In Korea where pay/hour charges are comparable to Western subscriptions WoW is behind both Lineage and Lineage II.
If you rank them by how much money they bring in my guess is it looks like this
1 WoW
2 Lineage II
3 Lineage I
4 FFXI
5 LotRO
6 EQ2
7 EQ1
8 EVE
9 CoH/CoV
10 SWG or DaoC or UO
Guild Wars may be up there as well, but it’s hard to say where because the money is from box sales which vary greatly depending on where they are in the release cycle.

Sony gave total SOE subscribers in their 2005 and 2006 annual reports. It was just under 700K both times.

Trouble with SOE numbers is they are a combination of all their games on the Station pass...and I think 2007 saw a large fall off of subs in all their games....

"less then half of WoW's accounts pay a subscription"
i love this argument!
why?
becase it's so blatantly wrong, it's hillarious!
then comes the contridiction- "WoW still leads in subscriptions."
so let's do the math using your numbers, just because this is funny...
less then half of WoW... ok... so half is 4.5 million or so... so let's say 4 million that actually pay a subscription.... according to your logic (obviously smarter then Blizzard's press releases that explain their numbers...)
wait! Your contridiction "WoW still leads in subscriptions" is actually correct! Even "less then half" of WoW is still more then probably 4-10 on your list combined. (I have no idea about L2 and lineage, I hear they are quite big in the East)

There was a fall off in 2004/2005 but most of their games have been stable since then.
Subscription based game – you pay a regular fee in exchange for essentially unlimited play time. Used for NA, EU and possibly Japan
Pay per hour – You pay for each hour you play. Commonly used in Asia.
“Free” to play – Free is in quotes because nothing is free. These games make money through a variety of means, including box sales, in game item sales, advertising, or as a lost leader for an internet café business.
With the exception of Korea nether the free or per hour models bring in anywhere near as much per customer as a NA/EU style subscription. Furthermore both skew the total numbers, particularly in China because there is little reason not to have multiple accounts.
If you pay per hour played it doesn’t cost you any extra to switch over to another account and play that instead. In China where you can’t legally play a single account for more then 3 hours in a day this is pretty much the norm, which makes it seem like there are more people playing then there really are. This makes it very difficult to do a head to head comparison of “active accounts” verses subscriptions. Games like EQ1, EQ2, EVE, CoH, DaoC, etc primarily count subscriptions, as does Linage and WoW in North America.
In Asia WoW and Lineage primarily count accounts, not subscriptions, as do the vast numbers of Asian MMO’s. Blizzard further complicates this by counting subscriptions in China even though they don’t run the game there. The9 pays a license fee for WoW and operates it as if they made the game themselves.
Except for Korea, Subscrition based games take in a lot more money then account based games relative to the size of the player base. For example WoW needs 25+ "Active accounts" in China to bring in as much money as 1 subscription in NA. (Player pays much less in total and The9 keeps most of it.)
Since you can’t really compare subscriptions to pay/hour accounts directly you need to either compare total $, or break out the numbers into separate “Subscription based” and “Account based” and compare like to like. Keep in mind the OP asked about subscriptions, not accounts.
Guild wars is between 4 and 5 million players now, most sites only show the number of active players around July, which was 4 million. However that doesn't have any subscriptions... I think the second most players is... eehm... Maybe it's EQ2, it's scoring quite good lately, and the number of players keeps rising. However i think the second most players is around 500 000, which could be any game.

Err no...
Last I checked Lineage II has over 1.5 million players
And EQ2 has yet to break 400,000 unless something changed recently.

Everquest II
Games that will come close? Warhammer, AoC, tCoS, Hellgate?..
Only time will show
Everquest II
Definitely not SWG.. Station Access is probably the only thing keeping that thing afloat.

Really depends on if you mean a US market or World-wide.
I would say Guild Wars or EQ2 for US.

Runescape according to http://www.mmogdata.com/. Followed by Second Life.
Well in that chart EQ2 has a 1.4% market share....less then EQ1.
In the US? In the World? Big Budget?
In the US and from a Big Budget company probably EQ2 or FFXI.
In the World and from a Big budget company probably Lineage 2.
Small budget game probably Runescape.
Although RF Online claimed over 1 million subscribers (almost all in Korea) so that might put it in the mix.
Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)
Looking Foward too:
Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)
Last I saw from a NCSoft financial report:
Lineage 1 at 1.4 million
Lineage 2 at 1.1 million
Lineage II, and then RuneScape. I'm not sure about Lineage, though. I think it may be ahead of L2.
