The thing is, the people that play SWG now either play it because its the only Star Wars MMO, because its fast and easy no brainer wow style action or for sentimental reasons (vets). Most never expirienced the original SWG with its complexity, and got "drafted" by the new SWG advertising campaign. They found what they expected and liked it, so they played it. They never read the original SWG handbook, they have no idea But can we blame them? No. We can only pity them for never having expirienced SWG in all its original beauty.
Maybe they even are a new generation, a wowified generation. The gimme gimme fast fast generation.
To all the old vets that still play for sentimental reasons all i can say is: Make the cut, all your old firends are long gone. SWG has no future.
I loved that old spiral bound handbook that was made to look just like it fell out of Han Solo's back pocket. It was just cool as hell as it was packed with details and it even RPed a bit. SWG was my first and last MMORPG. It was the only thing that ever made me feel emotion in a game. I have played 7 other mmorpgs after the NGE hit and none of them ever came close to the first night I loaded into Mos Eisley!
I know what you mean Exar Kun, although admittedly it was too much of a read for me. That's why I was so grateful that SWG at the time had a very friendly community that helped me out a long the way (eventually I did read the booklet, but only what related to my professions.)

I play it for the sentimental reasons, been playing since 03 , and no actually my friends are still there, most of them anyhow , i still have a good batch of my friendlist that keeps popping online, maybe not everyday but several times a week.

I will never get that feeling ever again...
A BIG ditto on that Exar_Kun!! It was my first MMO as well and it was indeed a magical time to be in a Star Wars universe! With that said, I can understand why those who play the NGE defend it so much. They seem to enjoy it and I'm sure few even know just how good the original SWG was...even with it's bugs and flaws. I quit when the CU came out because I think the game had become diminished in many ways. With the depth that the original format had the NGE just didn't sound like it was in depth enough from a character developement point of view. Even if SOE broke down and created a classic server I doubt if I would go back. You can never recapture the feeling you had with your first love or your first MMO. I'm pretty much over SWG and I'm playing LOTRO and having an enjoyable time with it. If a KOTOR MMO comes out I might check it out but until then I'll stay in Middle-earth....at least until the Stargate MMO comes out.
If you would have asked me a year ago if I would go back for classic servers, I would have said maybe. Now though, to much time has passed and to much anger has been built up over what was lost to ever be a Sony customer again.
I do mean Sony as a whole, Since 2005 I have been living Sony free. It's cool though, in my humble opinion Samsung makes better electronics anyway.
I'm not even sure if I will be picking up The Force Unleashed next year because Julio Torres is involved on the project as a producer. LOL my hate runs deep!
Either way though, I'm sure we will see a Kotor online beta by fall of next year and the wii lightsaber battle game will hold me over till then.

Not to rain on your parade or anything but Samsung uses Sony parts. I prefer Phillips.

They are long past the point of no return. Classic servers won't do much but maybe get them back to 50K subs again. A year ago they could have gotten back to 150K. 2 years ago they could have kept the 200K they had. 6 months from now they'd need classic servers to get 25K players... Basically the subscriber number is trending towards zero and has been since the NGE.
Humm I wonder why we had to increase the vent server load in the last couple days so everyone could log in at the same time? Could it be that chapter 7 and the game at large if freaking fun................ yep.

Actually they were all in our vent because we were all PvP'ing and running the new content in chapter 7. Alot of people are back playing again and I am running into quite a few brand new players to the game as well.
And even if LA and Bio are making a SW MMO feel free to wait for a couple years for that beta invite, I will be enjoying the current game thank you.

See this always bothers me because it forces me to say "A polished turd is still a turd" Look, just because SWG is "The best there is out there of all MMO's" (which is really subjective to begin with) it doesn't change the fact that this game is still no where near as good as it could/should have been and when players STOP "settling for the lesser of the two" then maybe game companies will start REALLY getting off their butts and working harder rather than making one WoW clone after the other.
It's Star Wars ffs, Xwing, Tie Fighter, Jedi Knight and Kotor... that's about it as far as good Star Wars games go, the rest are very average compared to the sheer brillance of the three original films.
As for how good MMOs are in general.. yeah they throw out crap like we're flies or dung beetles, but even so, SWG being the best MMO (which it isn't) doesn't bring it up the standards that the IP demands of it.

Nobody said it had to be "near damn perfect" heck KOTOR 2 had its share of bugs, that's why they had to do bug fixes. The complaints and the threats from the players were so many that Obsidian HAD to try and do their best to fix the bugs. But I do believe that companies would have to be forced to re-think what makes a good game. If no one is playing their game, they're not making any money. Now of course the worse could happen too, which is that the game would simply be closed (which would probably happen with SWG) But in the same token, it would be a good lesson to teach future developers.
I think what bothers me the most though, is that developers are using WoW as their base for their future games because of its success. Which is fine, why wouldn't you want your game to be successful right? But making a cheap knock off of an already succesful game is not the way to go. Developers should actually strive to be different from the rest, bring something new to the table other than a WoW clone in a different game skin. Lets be honest, I beta'd for a couple of recent games, and I have to admit I was so sorely disappointed with how much they tried to copy each other, that I got sick and simply said to myself "Well why would I want to play this if I'm already playing WoW? At least WoW doesn't have lag, the bugs are fixed etc. etc. etc. The only difference would be that that I'm playing in this world as opposed to WoW's"
Making a cheap copy of an already existing game doesn't show ingenuity, it's simply a show of laziness. They don't want to have to work hard for their money. I don't remember this being the case in the past. DAoC didn't try to copy EQ, nor did it try to copy UO each game had some similarities (very few by the way) but they were completely different from each other. Why? Because they wanted to make sure their game stood out from each other. Now in a market that is ridiculously over saturated with fantasy orc v. elf MMO's we REALLY need developers willing to stand up and standout from the crowd of drone followers and if their not going to start doing so because it's cheaper to copy WoW, then it's time for the playerbase to let them know by simply NOT buying their product. But if players keep settlign "for the lesser of the two" then there will never be any change.

@sinster,
Nice, even got the typical SWG broadcast typo correct.

AC1/2, AO, DAoC, EQ1/2, SoR, SWG, UO, WAR, WoW
The fact that i did makes me ticked off at my self.
Im really picky now about the games i play i will not touch any made my a company like $oe/or La.
I have said in the past id play bios mmo but that depends on 1 whos running the ip,
and whos pulling the strings..
The best thing that could happen to SWG is to bury it.
Ever since the CU, I keep mistyping SOW in stead of SOE.... nuff said
