WAR looks like WoW?

Shard101Shard101 Member UncommonPosts: 479

Games Workshop, who designed the World of Warhammer back in 1983, took many ideas and impression from the work of Tolkien, as well as other European influence. The game Warhammer, while it has a dark under tone, has always had a little sense of humor. The art from the 80s was cartoonish, yet dark.

Mythic, in keeping with the basic art concept establish by Games Workshop, began to use their model and art that is nearly 25 years old to make the model for the MMOG. While the color texture may appear similar to WoW, the model design of the Dwarf and Orc is within the traditional style of Games Workshop's creation that has been around since 1983. The only similarity of the 2 games is truly that it shares the same level of color texture. The only game Mythic is copying is the work that has been in place by the artist that had worked for Games Workshop.

It is said that Blizzard tried to license Warhammer from Games Workshop back during the development of the original Warcraft. For whatever reason, the deal fell through. Instead of scratching the project, Blizzard made some modifications to the graphics and art, created their own backstory, and called it Warcraft, their own new IP. Hence, the two look extremely similar because one was actually based off of the other.

After that bit of fact , let us discuss this further.  Do I need to post screenies?

    That is correct.

However, just because graphics look the same does not mean the games are the same. The pixels are not what matter in a MMORPG, its the gameplay. I think you will find WAR vastly different than WoW in many aspects

Only 1 question is unanswered: WHO CARES?

The fact is WAR looks like WOW.

You can come up with excuses all day long, but it doesn't change anything.

Blizzard took some artistic license (read: those whores.) with some stuff that Gamesworkshop did before them. Who gives a damn? All stories are basically the same on some level. Now then, let's watch, I bet that someone is gonna come in a give the whole 'Diddy Tolkien did it first' rant. No one cares, we've heard it before.

To respond to the OP, yes, WAR does look suspiciously similiar to WoW. Why not? WoW is obscenely sucessful, why not try to capitalize on that? Who needs integrity? Anyway, we've already seen evidence that WAR plays pretty damn like WoW, so I suppose we'll just have to wait and see when it comes out.

JRRT wasn't original and borrowed a lot from previous work.  Just too many people give him total credit for everything.

Honestly I've no idea why people are starting these WOW apologist posts  anyways? All this drivel about WOW having deeper skill than XXX is not only false but really who bloody cares?

WOW is a fun starter MMO which can be played on a toaster which is exactly what Blizz meant it to be. The kid next door doesn't care if xxx title looks like whatever as long as it's fun.

Besides Blizz didn't create WOW to be the end all be all of MMOS anyway. They created it to get every video game playing teen you know to at least try MMO's.

    Mission accomplished.

The fact of the matter is, the Warhammer franchise has been around for at least 5 years longer than Warcraft. Just because Warcraft has an MMO first doesn't mean that Warhammer is going to copy it because it has orcs and humans. If we're going to go down that route, then Everquest copied Warcraft when they made their MMO. And every other fantasy game that features magic, humans, orcs, and possibly elves.

I dont believe War copied WoW, but the fact is the games look very similar.

  • KinaKina Member Posts: 9

You know what two games look very similar? Rainbow Six and Counter-strike. They're both swat based videogames that have you attack objectives and kill terrorists. But it's the big differences that make them, well, different. Just because WAR looks like WoW doesn't mean that they're copying WoW entirely. And besides, even if they did, wouldn't you want a WoW game with developers who didn't suck?

TBH i think many claims of the 'WoW copying' is due to the fact they've seen a lot of Warcraft, but have never seen Warhammer..

Until DoW and WAR Warhammer wasn't a huge console game name, the high point before that was probly Fire Warrior which many people i met didn't even relise it's Warhammer they just thought it was a scifi FPS, there have been a lot of Warhammer games but non a huge success other then the ones stated (Mark of Choas WORST GAME EVER btw) whereas Warcraft (and Starcraft) are VERY well known to all...

One fact is true until WoW MMOs were 'geeky' and we 'geeks' know the history of  things such as tabletop gaming, TCGs, D&D.. Whereas the players that join WoW 'as it's cool' don't know past their PS2/Xbox as these things never exsisted to them before.

Fact of the matter is not matter how much this 'topic' is 'disscussed' there will always be thouse they know better and those that don't... just take comfort that you know your right

Well, since I guess they were both inspired by the same set of miniatures it makes sense they will have similar look and feel..... but the gameplay will be quite a bit different from a PVP perspective......

If they "look the same" how come War's weapons, armor, and characters look 1000 times better than Wow"s?  Blizzard has the artistic talent of a June Bug.  They can't even manage to make  quick key button look unique between classes let alone come up with somehting original.  They changed rogues stealth so it looked like you had a christmas tree up your hind end.   The look of alot of tier sets in WoW is laughable.  If you want to raid your butt off to look like BoWinkle be my guest.  I think the graphics and uniqueness in WAR are far and above anything WoW has dribbled out.
