Currently I play Eve, it is kickass, I love it, tons to do, very deep, involved game. First, yes the mission storys are content. Content is always about the background of the game so you can feel like you are in another world. I like Eve also but not as much as I like CoH but Eve got boring for me because all I did was either mine or kill stuff and kill stuff with seemingly no purpose. I even took part of the crafting and thats basically 98% mining and 2% building which comprised of putting stuff in the factory and press build. Oh yeah thats just damn exciting(sarcasm). Mining for hours at a time is not content. Carrying "packages" from one station to another is not content either.
Second, your stupid little breakdown of missions is so freakin lacking. If you actualy read the missions which you obviously aren't, would have noticed that the stories have a lot more variety than that. What about Eve missions. They are either go kill these pirates or take this package to another station. Hell, that is less than your misleading breakdown of CoH missions.
You accuse CoH of lacking but the only thing Eve has going for it is PvP which the first expansion of CoH is adding that. You take away the PvP and Eve's content is a lot less than CoH's. Infact, to even really compete in PvP in Eve, you need a good cruiser or battleship with good equipment and that can take you weeks to months to get to that stage not much less finding a good corp to back you. The only thing that is lame is your complaint on CoH.
Goliath, grow up. If you honestly have nothing better to do than post in the forums of a game you do not even like than you should get a new hobby, quit bashing one of the best/most popular mmo's out just because you were too much of an idiot to be able to enjoy the game fully, go play everquest with your l337 powergaming frineds or something. Just quit trying to insult me because you arent too good at it, and theres nothing you could possibly say over the internet that would offend me because for one i dont know you, respect you or care about anything you have to say. Thanks and have a nice day .

This game is not ment to be played by hardcore gamers. This game is ment for those who are just looking for a good time in the game.
You don't have to play for hours on end if you do you will probally go crazy and end up wanting to leave. I would suggest taking a small break or looking at diffrent ways to better your character.

LOL wow I am impressed . I wasn't bashing the game I was just trying to make a point that it wasn't for hard core gamers. However any time you would like a duel in any game just shout I would love to put you in your place. Wether it be counter strike , battle field or you can choose I just think a first person shooter would be even no lvs I know that in EQ it wouldn't be fair or SWG so put up or shut up.

Originally posted by sirchive After playing for a couple of weeks I finally realized that there is exactly ONE thing you do in this game. You run around and kill clumps of mobs. That's it! You simply do this endlessly. There are no quests. You get "missions" which are part of a "storyline". But a mission is simply an indoor location where you run down tunnels or corridors and kill clumps of mobs. It's exactly the same as killing mobs out in the streets except that you are indoors. Nothing you do influences the "storylines". You just go where told and kill clumps of mobs. I knew this game was more shallow than the typical MMORPG. But I didn't realize how shallow. No crafting. No loot. No quests. No endgame. No PVP. No real social interaction with other players. I can't believe that players are not quiting in droves or just keeling over at their keyboards from boredom.
Ignorance must be bliss (hopefully for you)
There are task force missions which extend over several days sometimes , there are all kinda cool lookin mobs at the higher levels. Also this game is new, it needs input from users etc. The char creation is awesome, costumes etc. Fast paced no lag .. I will prolly leave it for WoW but, for now it's very cool.
Aside from the fact that in most mmorpgs you kill clumps and clumps of mobs ...... name one GOOD ONE in which you don't ?!

You simply run down every hallway, kill everything you see and touch anything that flashes. That is a very sad and sorry excuse for a mission. " ... It's also a great 'I have an afternoon and some friends and want to go on a task force mission' game. However, it's not a great "I'm a hardcore uber player and I can prove it because of all my l33t lewt" -- the casual players will enjoy this one more than the harcore players.
Thank you! I agree, I mean geez - it's like evereyone who is putting the game down well... They just don't have the brain power to realize it's the same but , different. I like the fast paced gaming that this offers.

There are no puzzles to figure out at all. As for the ones that don't give locals: Its not puzzle sovling abilities that you need to run over an entire zone looking for one npc or creature but just a freaking whole lot of patience. In actuality most do tell you where they are at. First npc tells you where to find the next and so on. I have found more satisfaction in CoH missions than EQ quests because you become part of the story in CoH where you can barely see any story in EQ's.In 1, as you get tougher you often form larger groups (raids) to take on tougher content like dragons and get 'better' loot. Now don't get me wrong here I can be a fan of instancing, and many people doing the same mob at once. He was wrong to compare to compare the EQ raids. Since raids are extremely rare for the majority of your character's EQ life (Raids are almost entirely top levels of content), he should be just comparing the quests, which you really don't do a whole lot of them in comparison to CoH missions, and just regular hunting. Most of the your time gaming in EQ, DAoC and similiar games is just runing through a rat maze or usually just sitting and camping the same spawn of creatures over and over. Majority of the time in CoH you have a purpose in hunting mobs besides getting exp and leveling because of the mission's content/story.The problem comes in with the missions being very lack luster in design, minus orebanga. The tile sets repeat themselves to often. More effort should have been put on mission tilesets and objectives for release, this is a major part of the game. We are going to wait for the second content patch to add anything to this. The missions are both predictable and cheesy, the game feels like LDoN of eq with not much else released with it. I agree that they need more missions tilesets and there will be more. They still have more than AO did. I can live with it though because that is the price of having your own area so you don't have to wait in line(yeah thats fun) to get your needed mob which people have to do a lot in EQ, DAoC and other similiar games. As for predictable and cheesy. You idea of cheesy is skewed because I don't find them cheesy. Some are predictable but then seeing most of the of your playing time in EQ, DAoC and other similiar games you spend your time hunting the same spawn over and over that just some of it being predictable is doing better than those games.COH may not be perfect, but it is a great 'I have an hour or two and just want to have some fun' game. No they are not capped by level 30. At character level 30, you get a contact you do a mission for and once you complete it, you can buy origin specific SOs from him. Each origin has their own contact. You think i did not realize this? The point is the enhancements are capped at level 30 because you can do this quest and buy all of the ones you need. There is no better enhancement for a slot then a SO - excluding certain builds use of the dual so from hami. This was my entire point. In 1, you do quests. In 2, you do quests. True if you only compare the redundant cheesy quests in games, however group 1 can have quests that require thought in order to complete, and normally don't give you exact directions on where to achieve them. In 1, as you get tougher you often form larger groups (raids) to take on tougher content like dragons and get 'better' loot. By the way, Task Force missions have a lot more too them than just being a series of quests. When did this change of definition happen, if i go looking for definitions for raids so far all have been something like this - Raid - (Noun) A gathering of several groups that join to attack a particularly difficult target, such as a high level boss. Following that definition the only raid is Hamidon like i stated. As for task force missions not being a series of quests, what else could they be, they are the same objectives, many of the same tile sets, you go kill here, then go kill x in some zone here, etc this is exactly what missions are like. The difference is they have a nice story and are slightly harder. That is the only difference, even the reward of a SO is junk after level 30.
I agree about the loot thing. Enhancements are not loot. As for an economy, while there is influence it isn't really a dynamic part of the game (at this point any way) and as such there isn't any real player produced economy. The long and short of it is if you plan on playing COH and expect SWG or EQ you're going to be very disappointed. COH doesn't try to motivate its player base by setting up arbitrary goal like EQ or provide a world of total submersion like SWG. Because of that there isn't any considerable LOOT, hoarding of money or PVP bragging rights.
COHs goal is to motivate it's player by simply making a game that is fun to play. It is more like an arcade game in that sense. The combat interface is vastly more free and fast paced then any game I have seen (I have played most all the more popular ones).
COH presents engaging story lines that all interconnect making Paragon City filled with secrets to explore through the mission system (but you have to take the time to read the text...which is most always presented in short chunks) and just patrolling (hunting) you can find clues about the storylines. It has been my experience that many people are so worried about leveling that they do to take advantage of this aspect of the game, however, and then they complain that there isn't any content.
COH provides an outlet for role-playing a super hero pretty well and the ability to make unique avatars with a graphics engine that is impressive for the genre.
I think the nay sayers against COH have over stated the short comings of COH, but certainly those who jumped to defend COH have made comparisons that stretched reality as well. I agree with the general idea behind sirchives original post (except that COH has no missions, the mission system in COH is more dynamic then any MMOGs on the market). And, more then that I think it's important that people interested in playing this game for the first time be aware that COH isn't about competing against other people. Don't play COH if youre looking for competition (PVP or FINDING rare items) or complete submersion. That is not the design of COH.
However I find that people who can enjoy the game for it's playability are usually very happy with the game, but if your one of those people who play a game like splinter cell, Max Pain or Due ex and are obsessed with finishing the game (not that there is anything wrong w/that) instead of the type of person that enjoys watching the story unfold and the play challenge, then you most likely won't enjoy COH for long.
Like most things there are two sides of the coin. COH is a good game for some people. It doesn't do everything nor does it try to. COH simply tries to simulate being super hero while providing a back drop to do so with other people with the same desire. In this goal COH has been mostly successful.
PS, it's late and ever reread this post so please excuse any spelling/typing mistakes

Task Force missions send you after particularly difficult targets. Example: Synapse's TF which you eventually have to fight the archvillian Clockwork King. Syster Psyche's TF sends you after an archvillian of the FreakShow but I can't remember her name at the moment. Also there is a story arc you get in the mid-teens that requires you to bring nearly a full team of friends because in the end you have to fight the archvillan Dr. Vahzilok. So by the definition there are more raids than Hamidon and you don't have to wait for the high levels to do them like you do in EQ.
Each TF I have done had different tilesets for the missions. Wharehouses, offices, burned out offices, caves and labs have all been in the TF missions. Also if again reduced down the missions to the base framework then all the objectives would be the similar just like any mission/quest/task of any other game and any of these big raids their objectives are all the same which is to kill the big bad guy. At least the story objectives for each mission is different but then you have to get away from the powerleveling mind set to truely enjoy them. All those individual story objectives combine to make a big overall story for the TF but then again you have to get away from the powerleveling mindset to truely enjoy it.

No the definition said A gathering of several groups. Task force missions are single group events, this is not a raid. They are harder single group content with a decent story, they are not raids. I have done 4 Task force Missions multiple times, the AV may be harder then a normal CoH mob, but they do not approach difficulty of what i would call a raid mob. Just like your example Dr. Vhaz can be solo'd by certain builds. You can duo him with ease with less restrictive build types. It would take a very poor group build to need 8 people to do him. This is the case with almost every AV in the game. Do you really feel Mobs that can be solo'd duo'd or at most need 4 people to beat should be considered "Raid" content?
I really don't give them that much fault for using the same tile sets objectives if you refer to it as a series of quests. Once you tell me this is CoH version of a raid, it should be different. Raid zones are normally handcrafted, may have pitfalls that you can not predict your first time through. Tell me do you agree with their true definition meeting raid being designed for 200 people? What kind of person would design such content for the only multi group encounter in the game. Not that it wasn't done with 8 in the beginning then 15ish, now its semi retarded hard. Poz actually stated they where trying to balance the encounter for 200 people, this alone gives me a lot of worry about the design philosophy the devs are taking.
I think the game has potential to be a great game, it just needs a lot more content. Its underlaying structure is quite good. Personally I would hope they add some multi group taskforce kind of stuff, lower the total number of instanced areas you go to. Handcraft them, I am sick of seeing map editor quake type missions. Balance needs to be worked on a bit still, my blaster could fight 10 con red minions and a couple purple LT's groups at one time with little fear of death, this is not good. It made grouping less xp, when grouping is less xp it becomes boring to solo eventually. Missions need to scale in con much more then they do, a slider would be great. 2-3 mobs at once in a solo mission is boring, sure the story was good but that stops being effective when you are bored to tears in the zone itself. Mission xp needs to be reworked, to be competitive with street fighting. If you build a decent AE group the missions are still boring, you can kill almost anything before they have the chance to fire back. The problem with making non ae groups, they are slower xp, the xp starts to feel like a grind in later levels. Yes i know its less then what other MMO have been, other MMO had stuff you could do to break it up to an extent though. Your focus is not 100% on your xp bar like this game can make you feel.
There is exactly one thing to do in this game, and it is undeniably fun...
I don't want to craft... to make preprogrammed items in a method that is somewhat boring... perhaps If crafting were more like a puzzle game (I dunno, tetris), then maybe I would enjoy crafting a teency weeny little bit...
I don't need an economy... I don't even understand the need for a player run economy...
And I don't have a lot of time to spend trading and making stuff just so I can go bust some heads...
CoH does what it does very well, and at no point has it ever claimed to cater to the hardcore gamer... do you guys just pick up anything that seems MMOish or do you research the games first? Can't you tell that some games are not meant for you? If you want a game like EQ but better, what in the world would make you think a superhero game would provide that for you?
I'm not going to buy Call of Duty because I can tell it's not my type of game... no matter how good of a game it is, I'm not all that interested in WWII and old guns... I'm just not going to buy it. I wish more people would take that attitude with CoH instead of knocking it for not being an EQ clone.
Originally posted by Hype There is exactly one thing to do in this game, and it is undeniably fun... Combat was exciting, going through droves of enemies was something fairly new to the genre. technically there is no extreme difference though, you just make the enemies super weak compared to the hero, most MMO the mobs are all boss level or above in the amount of difficulty they present. It still boils down to in one game i pressed 3, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, in this game i press 1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,3 and i have to retarget more often since mobs are falling at a faster pace. I like the combat here slightly more, though i would beef up at least some of the mobs a bit, the ones that are beefed up should give extra xp to compensate for the time difficulty to kill them. The game xp core is derived around fighting to weak of mobs, loosing some of the fun combat feel that was there earlier in the game. I don't want to craft... to make preprogrammed items in a method that is somewhat boring... perhaps If crafting were more like a puzzle game (I dunno, tetris), then maybe I would enjoy crafting a teency weeny little bit... Crafting is coming in CoV, its extent and how fun they make it is up in the air though. I don't need an economy... I don't even understand the need for a player run economy... Economy builds a community, the game has lost some of that because of the poor grouping dynamics, to many instanced areas etc. I was in the games beta, I had a blast so i bought the game. I started to loose appeal in the game when the purple patch came around. Grouping in my level range was a rare occurrence afterwards, and the groups that did form where small for maximum xp efficiency. Fighting whites, yellows, and orange mobs is a joke. My Blaster and my Scrapper can solo these con ranges with ease. When groups where forced to fight in this area it just basically killed the game to me, sure they relaxed the con range that you could kill a bit, but grouping has never truly came back to what it once was. The fact that it is a superhero game means nothing to me, i don't care if I am in fantasy, sci fi, comic book land. None of this matters to me, I enjoy all flavors really. Again Cryptic had a wonderful release, better then probably any MMO. I truly do feel the game could have stayed in BETA for a while longer to work on adding content, so you would not have to worry about the lack of content issue that keeps arising. In the end it was probably a cost issue, NCsoft probably wanted the game on market as soon as possible to start getting a return on their investment.

First of all, sorry I missed the "serveral groups". Doesn't matter anyway because it is the TFs is what he meant when he said raids. My whole point was that TFs are a hell a lot more interesting than raids. Raids in EQ are a lot of sit and wait. You were saying how the tilesets are all the same or similiar. Raids take as long or longer than TFs but they are all in the same map. Its yet another complaint on this game that can be used on any other game.
Eight person group being a bad group build if needed for a TF? Have you forgetten that the more people you add to the group the more the mission gets stepped up with bad guys? A mission you go in with 5 people is going to be a lot easier than a mission you go in with 8 people. Btw, I have yet to meet a person who could solo Dr. Vahzilok and thats something people would be bragging about so my chances of not hearing it is pretty low. Even when I had 3 levels on Dr. V, I couldn't kill him and I play a pretty good scrapper.
Now let me get this straight, your blaster can defeat 10 con red minions and 2 purple LTs at the same time without fear of death. Either that is bs or you found some exploit. I got blaster friends in their 30s and they can't do that. Blasters are still overpowered but not that overpowered. Even fire tankers, who were the most overpowered by a lot, would have problems with that kind of group.
I have had plenty of missions where there where more than 3 bad guys together solo. Sky Raiders themselves had a tendency to be in groups of 4 which pushed my limits as a soloer. As for grouping missions, remember the more people you have in the group the more there are bad guys in a group. Our groups of 8 usually take on 15 to 20 bad guys on at once. We have had blasters in these groups that get cocky from the solo time and pulls them before we have ready which 9 times out of 10 he/she gets killed.
I agree this game has bugs, balancing issues and more map tilesets needed to be taken care of but in my opinion CoH has already way ahead of others. EQ had more bugs and balancing issues when it first came out then EQ did. Remember those monk gloves that came from a quest given in Kerra Island? Those gloves had unlimited full heal. The Qeynos Hills to West Karana zone bug which once kicked me back to QH 17 times in a row. These two are just the tip of the iceberg.

EQ raids where sometimes sit and wait, 90% of the time the guild i was in would zone be buffed and pulling withing minutes. True the raid itself was in one zone, but 99% of eq raids do not take 3 hours to do.

No this is not what i meant, what i said is that AV's do not require 8 people to do. Regardless if the missions have more mobs, there are not multiple AV's added from having more people. Yes Vhaz has been solo'd by multiple builds if you dont know about it i sujest you keep better track of the CoH message board it has been posted on several occations in the last few months. Builds that do it are certain Blaster and Scrapper builds, all have to use hit and run. I do not know of a build that can tank it solo till conclusion, however it is possible with a duo.

Yes, it is possible, you have to pick the right mobs. IE gun mobs, these mobs should not have any CC type abilities, this will get you killed. Then with Smoke Grenade, Claok, Hasten, and Tough you are set. You can lower con red minions to 5% chance to hit, now you can still die at 5% a few times, because you may get unlucky, tough helps with this some. Start with trip mine, jump back AE. Follow with single targets, if the group has several mobs left after first wave of ae and singles powers down, your ae's will be ready to use again. This will not work at all level ranges, in the upper end of the game. At certain points you will be almost forced into fighting certain ranged CC type mobs. In these instances you can still do con red minions with purple lt, you just have to lower the number of mobs you take at one time.
I have had plenty of missions where there where more than 3 bad guys together solo. Sky Raiders themselves had a tendency to be in groups of 4 which pushed my limits as a soloer. Even at 4 at a time, my main had no problems in solo missions. They will never be as hard as street fighting can be. Because the con range is so limited in missions. Yeap adding more people makes more mobs, but you know what it doesnt really matter in the end. Send in a Tanker, or later levels preferably a good scrappy. They take the alpha strike, taunting the meaner mobs that will survive the blasters alpha strike. Then if you have 2 or more AE blasters every minion will be down with their first strike. LT's will be at or below 50% boss mobs are being entertained by the Tank/scrappy. Switch to single target blasts, clean up rinse repeat.

hehe yeap there where some interesting misshaps with bugs in early eq. I say again this game probably had the best release of any to date, i give them major probs for this.
Im sorry to say, but reading these posts are actually influincing if im going to buy this game! i got extreemly hyped up in this game, havent bought it yet, but have seen my friends p[lay it. it looked so good, i wrote mt own comica about the character i was going to create. before i read these posts, i had read the entire history of the CoH world. I think if you read that, you will find more of a storyline in the game. as for the "all you do in this game is kill clumps of mobs" quote, let me tell you this: name one mmorpg where you DONT WANT TO KILL STUFF! if you ask me, CoH makes all other games landlocked (what with the flying and leaping). annd to sum it up, you can have a sidekick and base! you could be BATMAN AND ROBIN for fuc*'s sake! anyway, CoV will make CoH a thousand times better. so please dont knock this game without REALLY playing it.
1. Every raid I took part of or witnessed took all day long and every article and forum post talking about raids that I read always talked about taking all day. Although I should say all plane raids took all day. Nagafen and Vox took about your time but these are "mini" raids compared to plane raids.
2. I never implied that there are more archvillans if there are more people in the group. Yes there is only one archvillan and adding another just for group numbers is rather stupid. What I am talking about is that there are more minions, lts and bosses around that AV. Sure the Clockwork King with only a minion or two around him would be pretty easy for 8 people but when you add 15 more minions, 3 or 4 lts and a boss or two you got a pretty good massive fight. I've also seen bosses and avs go up in level when there are more people in the group. Also, unless they weakened Dr. V, you can not hit and run him. His healing rate was so freaking high that he would heal all the damage while you heal all your damage. I tried this loaded up with damage inspirations and it never worked. This was with my ma/regen scrapper. He was healing faster than me with two slotted heal enhs. I had no choice but call in my buddies to take him down.
3. Smoke Grenade and Hasten got nerfed hard. I remember people totally freaking out because they believed that hasten was no useless and they got stuck with useless. That setup you had was almost an exploit(notice I didn't say it was one) and they are fixing it. This was a type of bug that was just part of design they didn't consider which was made it not an exploit. Still, that was not what the devs intended. You should no longer or soon no longer be able to take on 10 con red and 2 purple lts. Infact this would have to had been a long time ago since about the same time hasten got nerfed the devs had patches it so that your chances to hit purples was almost nil.
4. Once again they have nerfed blasters and will continue. Many of the powers that made some tankers too powerful also got nerfed. The mobs should be a lot more challanging now. Also don't forget that you will have to be forced to fight CC type mobs a lot more than street fighting. The rest of that is just good strategy and if you get a good group to follow good strategy in any game, fighting is just rinse and repeat. In EQ and DAoC I had groups that I was assured of never dieing. Our risk factor was pretty much zero which is what you are having a problem with this game.
5. Remember the male barbarian shield bug? Thats the one when you are a male barbarian with an equiped shield, your hand looked empty. I sure got sick of people telling me to get a shield.
1. Totally agree the older expansion raids where quite long and very frustrating. Things have gotten easier, mass group buff was a god send for getting raids started moving fast. Most of the newer stuff in PoP etc is fairly short. As for how GoD is I dunno, i stopped raiding after plane of time. 2. Agree, and for V solo its sorta exploitish, dunno if it still works. Duo is still an option depending on who you bring or was up till my last scrappy did him probably 1 month ago. 3. Smoke Grenade took a hit, in the fact that you it can miss. Once Targeting Drone was slotted well this was not a problem, with hasten you can throw 3 or so of them before they start wearing off. Hasten Nerf doesn't mean anything in the upper levels really mine was off for like 2-5 secs almost perma on, they also buffed it by adding 5% defense later on. The "purple" nerf you are referring to would not hinder your ability to hit a purple LT. People just used Purple, it was really anything +4 levels of you was off limits. A purple LT can be +3 . I do agree that they will fix this situation though, many people are still calling for harsh nerfs on SG. All of this is based off probably 2 or 3 weeks ago, if further nerfs to SG and hasten have happened since then, i am unaware of them. 4. totally agree, once you have good groups pretty much any game is a sinch It may have gotten much harder, I will probably check back with the game after the second content patch. Pretty sure i read something about new powers with it, one of the reasons i gave up on wanting to grind out 40 - 50 was the powers i could choose from didn't seem that appealing. 5. hmm don't remember this, seems every other forum i go to i see "The Vision" one of the reasons i am very scared of Vangaurd

CoH has two things going for it.
1. You can play with your buddy, no matter if he is 2 lvls or 40 lvls above you, the SK system ROCKS.
2. The character Creation system is hands down, the best.
After that, its your typical MMORPG with good graphics, a basic skill system and plays like a adventure game with an RPG Shell.
There is no try, only [ReTrY]!
Always change your signature.
Or even Call of Duty.

Or even Call of Duty.

I will be happy to go head to head with you in COD you can look for me in clan livewire . Well I dont play allied assult so I would give you that one . So come and get some.
