Would you play an MMO if the world could be destroyed?

AmarantharAmaranthar Member EpicPosts: 5,852

Suppose that an MMO had an ultimate evil that could destroy that game world, and it was up to the players to stop it. Not something that could happen easily, or in the first couple of years after release.

1) The ultimate evil wins and destroys the world, destroying all characters and assets, and the game continues as a new world where the players all have to start over.

2) The players defeat the ultimate evil, and save their world. Life goes on. New challenges soon to come.

How would you feel about it? Would you play it, skip it, be pissed if all your stuffs is destroyed and you have to start over, what?

Once upon a time....

As much as I might regret it if it happened....

    I must say yes

I have always thought an idea like this would be awesome, really give a new edge to a MMO..it would add elements I feel are missing more from MMO's...kinda like how I felt back in 1998 UO...the way their death system worked is in my opinion the best ever and should be copied whenever possible. The world should feel dangerous, and death should hurt.

However this game might fail financially because people might whine too much.

perhaps make it so you dont loose everything....perhaps reborn into a new char with the same level?

but this would cause many complications

    hmm good topic

    I play all ghame

Sorry to be blunt, but what are you smoking bud?

The devs are still trying to pass 'Get me 10 wolf meat' quest thingies.  And personally I don't like much Armageddon scenarios, the idea just has to many blank spots to be succesful.

    For me VETO!

I , honestly wouldnt mind a permadeth kind of MMORPG.I suppose the problem in your scenario is that players are dependent on eachother. And lets be honest, with the people I play with...the world is doomed. HOwever, I wouldnt mind the chalenge of fighting for my own individual characters life.

It sounds good to me, I'm tired of new mmo's having almost no consequences if you lose/die Dieing should be a bad thing you should have real reprucusions lose alot of items something more than just becoming a ghost and walking 2 minutes to your body *cough*WoW*cough*. I always thought it would be cool if the devs did something like what you suggested, or even perma-death.

There are no reasons why a MMO wouldn't have an end, other then pulling the plug if it has too few customers.

I would definitely play such a game if the game play is fun all around. I don't cry when i finish Oblivion, and i won't cry if the MMO i play ends because players are too incompetent to defend the world agaist NPC. (Or against other players. A faction that wins would be refreshing for once instead of that stupid non ending pandora box)

What deserves to be done, deserves to be "well" done...

I actually think that it would be a pretty decent idea.  The only other game that I know of like this would be Diablo 2's hardcore mode.  I'm sure that there would be all kinds of kinks you would have to iron out, but you're on to something and I would play it.

One scenario that I would be worried about is what about all the people that come into the game in the middle?  They prolly wouldn't be a high enough level (or such) to make a difference in the combat aspect of defeating the evil.  So like Czzarre said, your survival would be completely dependant on the higher levels.

I think it's a great idea though.  I'm ready for something relatively new.  An MMORPG with an actual storyline that you get to participate in?  Go figure!

The "evil" side would need to be judged by the active population and level average (or player rating if levels weren't a factor) to determine its strength and weakness. If you had a low pop server and you had an overwhelming evil side then it wouldn't be fun.

If it had something like Horizons had where the blight was creaping over the land and the players had to stop it. There were events on Horizons where the dark side would invade and we had to defend. The ides has been out there, you would just need a game to captivate the players and give them a reason to fight.

You would also need to take into consideration if the evil side was about to take over, people would want to jump ship. So there would need to be a limitation on character transfers (if even offered).

While many of us (me included) would love to see some of the more annoying players on some games get wiped and never return, you would also run the risk of losing your core players. Maybe if the server got taken over and there was a wipe, there would need to be some sort of perk for players to come back.

I'd give it a shot, however if it became obvious that evil was winning I think some folks might give up and go reroll on a server that had the good side succeeding, which of course would doom the world.

are you kidding there is absolutely no creativity left in MMO design

    its just

    A) take level and combat focused design

    B) slap  a new IP on it

    C) advertise a few features which really are just features not entire concepts

MMOs need new concepts like the one mentioned here

    so yes, i would play

As a special ruleset it could be interesting. As a game it could quite frustrating for new players, everytime they start levelling up and then the world resets or something. Actually it would be frustrating for other players as well, I mean like the average player or casual joe who didn't have an influence in altering the world type thing.

By the way when I read this first of all I thought it was meaning in a destructible kind of way. Like houses could be damaged/destroyed, environments could be stuff like that heh. That would be interesting.

i would play it, but it depends on how it would be played too.

in my oppinion, a game like this can't be played to it's full potential with a keyboard and a mouse. if you get my point.

of course i wourd play even the wolrd is end, since i can't do anything  about it anyway.

I deffinitly could see a fun game there... however i think it should have a bit of a death star scenario... maybe have the ability to get off-world and limit how many planets so your server would have a few chances... maybe make it a once a year event cause playing a game thats suppose to have an ultimate consequence after 4-5 years of game-play wouldnt grab people and give it a bit of a sense of urgency...

This is a great idea.  It gives players a reason to level up and a cause to PvP.  I think it might also make it easier to take the game less seriously and just enjoy it, knowing that you will lose your character eventually.

There might need to be some restrictions at times in order to keep the two sides balanced, but I would love to play a game like this.

So basically your asking for a game that uses DirectX 10 physics and has perma-death in it.  I would love to see a MMO that uses DX10 physics... which they probably will soon.  Perma-death,  I don't like the idea of that but it would have to be done right I guess.  Entropia Universe(social internet life game) is going to be doing this soon.

God yes! I think it would be awesome! I mean think about it. It would mean that players will be able to do something that actually matters as opposed to just doing simple quests. Heck I can see whole new possibilities if the world was destroyed and the players that survived the apocalypse would have to try and restore order to the chaotic world :) I say bring it on!

  • gothgargothgar Member Posts: 87

There was potential for a game like this in Matrix and TR...

I would be badass,  but I wouldn't say it takes a few years for x event to happen... it needs to be possible to happen within a few months, and the leveling in the game needs to be damn hella fun, so you'd need really well put together classes with a skill/level system that has near limitless potential.

An MMORPG with permanent death that I can recall offhand is Face of Mankind. It made it possible for corporation leaders to be assassinated, and actually put in their graves for good.

Unfortunetly, I feel that MMORPG went to hell with them trying to mainstream it too much and ruining the feel and balance.

However, games with permanent loss have been around a long time and made fighting mean something.

Shadowbane was my favorite MMORPG of all time because we had to fight, backstab, and claw our way through the world. Imagine five armies sitting at the doorstep of your small hamlet? You'd better start making a deal or three.

You always had to feel bad for the other guys when you went past their capital city and saw nothing but smoke bellowing over the burning ruins, three days later.

Darkfall is supposed to have more of this loss-based simulated life in it, and the devs have stated numerous times if they can capture even a tiny bit of what games like Shadowbane and Ultima Online offered us as gamers, then it will all have been worthwhile for them.
