I was playing all day and it was across the board low populations. Around prime time earlier Blackbeard and the Euro server had a nation or two spike up to moderate and I think one nation on one server showed heavy for a short time.
All told - it was pretty miserable, there couldn't have been more than a few thousand playing on all servers combined at any given time today and on the servers I checked you could see absollutely no increase in activity over last week. So basically, except for some occasional spikes on a nation here and there it is about 50 to 150 or so players per nation per server.
All in all pretty pitiful, about the lowest populated launch I have ever seen in an MMO, and the lack of spike from pre boarding to actual live was nearly imperceivable. I think it has to be gloomy at FLS, although I should think the pre order numbers and low populations had to have them knowing it was trouble. They had better move quick to allow full character moves to populated servers (the one that is, lol) or they are gonna lose the few people they do have playing as the game simply doesn't work (economy, PvP, RvR) without several hundred per nation online at any given time and they are struggling on 95% of the nations to get even half that.
Boy, people can excuse anything no matter how obviously terrible it is. There couldn't possibly have been more than a few thousand players at any given time today across ALL servers - that is pitiful and unsustainable from the game mechanics perspective. A nation which is mostly 100, 150, 200 players online at any one time is not going to work at all - not even close.
If you cannot generate enough interest and excitement on the first day to clutter up the servers then you simply cannot generate interest or players. Sad to say that but obvious is obvious.

hi SWB - GB here
yes released numbers are up about 10% on the pre-boarding party, not a huge increase but in the right direction.
Thks for defending my position in the "what ever you conceive" thread as i cant post there anymore
Your contribution to beta & forum posts have been very accurate & informative.
i may come back if i get a buddy key but i'm not ready to pay for it yet, especially with the way SOE are ripping off the Europeans.
You guys obviously don't know how this genre fairs.
For example
Unchanted water online is a very popular work in Asia and yet they didn't have more then 80k total with taiwan + japan. Voyage century have broken million or so i heard from china side.
Ship games doesn't get all the big population like WoW does. The reason is they are slow and mostly complex. People doesn't enjoy complex as you can see simulation and strategy doesn't always come being TOP seller.
While many stores have holded POTBS off shelves as there is a general delay as well people won't get the game until 23rd.
I went in to pick up the game and only 5 copy available because i pre-order. The general shippment is due on 23rd.
Just wait and see don't come to a conclusion. Beside, i personnally don't think the majority North american enjoy these type of games. They are more into "hack and slash and point and shot" not "let's think and wait and plan ahead" type of games. You can see that in their TOP SELLER... While Asian have more Strategy and simulation and RPG on TOP seller.
This game has been live for less then 24 hours and you guys are already arguing about pops...many people need to do these wierd little things like eat, sleep, work, school, take the time to load the game, go to the store and buy it maybe, I know I know, unbelievable .....you need to give it a month or two before you can really say.
so are you just pulling some random figures out the air or did you go round all the servers counting ?
Thier were people everywhere on the server I played on last night, it felt really busy.
Oh and someone with 'Achiever 66.67%, Killer 60.00%, Explorer 53.33%, Socializer 20.00%' in their sig , is not really advertising there skills in numeracy
i think alot of people that were supposed to be playing today are waiting on their mail to arrive. guess SOE screwed up with shipping out the goods in a timely fashion...now theres a surprise

I'm from Sweden and I have not seen anything about this game. Maybe Blizzard have told the news only to write about WoW(?) So there you have one reason. Maybe in some weeks more might know that this game is out here in Sweden.
Most mmorpg don't have a good start. If you are an old mmorpg then you know that and you wait.
And this is not a fantasy game with dragons and magic, it's not a sci-fi or anything we seen before. It's about Pirates. Sure a lot of people love Johnny Depp, but this is more about the Ships.
And the new generation don't like slow combat, it don't like to wait, it don't like to lose things, it don't like to work hard.
People think that every new mmorpg are going to be like WoW. The so called 9 million mmorpg, full of gold buying players and farmers...
Give it some more time.
They also had problem with accounts.
And people see SOE, something that people hate. That might keep some people away from this game. Would be great if they made it more clear that SOE have nothing to do with the game more then selling it etc.
That list seems somewhat accurate, with the restriction that it was alot more on yesterday then it been earlier. For Roberts that is. It was 440 on Roberts last night, british side. The list states 340 which is the number it have been the last 1½ week, give or take a few. Roberts british side started on on abit above 200 players the first days up to 340.
So, if the NA/Euro servers can only manage 1000 per server then it simply will not be viable to have a server here. I do think that number will increase, not speaking for French, Spanish, Deutch server though. But we'll see.

Maybe in some weeks more might know that this game is out here in Sweden. I would not have found out the game if it was not for MMORPG.com, atleast I would suspect so. Anyway webhallen have it. Listing 2nd place atm. To compare with LOTRO wich entered at 3rd or 4th place. EQII ROK entered at 5th or 6th place. http://www.webhallen.com/topp.php?avd=1&konsol=5&genre=1306
People think that every new mmorpg are going to be like WoW. The so called 9 million mmorpg, full of gold buying players and farmers... Yeah, and it won't need to be a "wowkiller" to be fun :=) Give it some more time. They also had problem with accounts. And people see SOE, something that people hate. That might keep some people away from this game. Would be great if they made it more clear that SOE have nothing to do with the game more then selling it etc. They have been clear with that, that guy from FLS posting here (sorry but can't forgot the name for some reason) have been stating that. And have also been argued against it. There is just so much to do in the end.
Normally when I join a new game i go for a server with light to moderate population to avoid over crowding and server lag. Nothing worse than having to wait for repops so you complete a mission.
This game on the other hand really doesn't have most of those problems do to instanting, so other than lag a higher population shouldn't be a hindrance.
I wasn't able to get on till after 1030 pm MST due to Bestbuy.com not sending the retail versions out, in fact they have them back ordered! I called them and the lady said many others had called with the same problem, which was odd as the stores received their copies. She said we were suppose to get our copies before the stores did. She suggested I purchase a store copy and cancel the pre-order one which I did. Unfortunately my nearest Best Buy is 60 miles away and had to travel through a snow storm to get my copy, therefore the late start. So I'm sure there will be a influx of people as that situation is resolved. The store itself had a bunch of pre-order games still that hadn't been picked up and said the sales of the game there was high.
I don't think the way the game is sturctured that it could endure 10k players per server first of all. however there are many reports of people who purchased the game online, not digital distribution, not getting the game till even the 26th. Some Amazon customers saw a sudden delay appear on their billing before the game would be shipped, see this link for an example. I know I've seen a number say they won't get it till the 24th. So give it a week before we say the game population is a failure.
That in mind, this game was never meant to hit the numbers wow did. But its a good game, and its not WoW, something many like myself are very, very sick of. After all if you don't enjoy it, don't play.
Most servers were "light" but 3-4 were moderate. I played from about 9pm-12am EST
actually one of the EU servers was heavy (pirate) and medium the rest, Morgan had med pirate and brit, and rackham was med across the board, and there was 1 other that was medium across the board but i forget the name, was around 1030pm est last night
Server Pop is looking better today. Lots of people are waiting for their boxes to come in but it looks like the server estimates are going to be close to right.

Most future players are probably still waiting on a box from pre-order.
Regardless, the population is not too high and not too low.
There will be much more activity this weekend when players don't have to work/go to school.
PoTBS is more of a casual game, not a hardcore "Lookz at how many pplz play on my serverz all day" game.

A nation or two? Is that the same as 3 nations on medium and brittish on heavy?
The difference on british was 450people compared to 340 the days before?

"You have the right not to be killed"

I found this thread with some player server counts
http://www.burningsea.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1604
This relates to something I have been thinking about the Australian Release.
Rusty said the contract was signed - but he has to travel to Australia on the 28-30th IIRC?
The fact that he still apparently cannot say anything makes me think the contract is still conditional...
I am thinking the Australian 'partner' wants to see some figures before they finally commit.
Europe has a population of 700 million and USA has about 300million - Australia has about 22 million.
So, if the NA/Euro servers can only manage 1000 per server then it simply will not be viable to have a server here.
Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.
High Population < Low Population in PoTBS

come on now. Low Population is never better than High Population for an MMO.

I was talking about PoTBS, no other MMOs. ( why I said "in PoTBS" )
Having a thousand + ships in each faction on a server will lag the game like no other.
A lower/average number of players will be just fine for this game.
