A MMO based on the mid 19th century western United States would be interesting and unique if done right. The game would have to be skill based with no levels or classes. The game would be player skill based with aim and dodge. PvP would have to be open with consequences which would allow people to be outlaws if they choose but would make it a hard life as they would always be on the run. Skills could include hand gun, shotgun, rifle, blacksmith, mining, brawling, drinking(higher the skill the less the effect), Guile(Could be useful in gambling) and many more. Make it so that if a player outlaw gets caught by the law they will have a set amount of time to escape or be rescued by his/her mates or they go to the gallows and perma-death will result. Make all sorts of gambling readily available with cheating possible(This could lead to saloon brawls if the player gets caught). Have it so that you can "Call someone out" and have gun fights in the street without consequences if done right. I have many more ideas about this type of game but that is enough for now. It could be fun and very different.
The only problem with Bioware now is that they were "acquired" (read: assimilated) by Electronic Arts. EA is the Devil, so...
Hey, I'll take EA anyday over SOE. EA hasn't slapped my wife and kicked my dog...yet.
From what I've heard about SOE over the years, they and EA are very similar in operation and how much they care about their player base, knowledge of MMOG design.

Fortunately, I guess, I haven't experienced any of that. To my knowledge, though, they (EA) haven't done anything at the level the NGE was. I've never really had any bad experience with any game's CS team, SOE included, as I am not one to utilize such services. Luck, maybe? I honestly don't know. I do know I hope that trend continues, lol. Oh, and another setting I'd like to see as an MMO is the IP you get your pic from, Darkholme. "Muadib!" --------BOOM!
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."
I would like to see a game based on vampires ( white wolf and ccp {eve online}) take the crafting, diplomacy, and player homes (set up and decoration) from Vanguard, the idea of DDO (based on table top rules), maybe instance based like DDO, the skill base from pre-cu SWG for crafting technology (i.e. firearms, automotive, structures, electronics), underworld contacts(mafia, corrupt government, foreign contacts and/or trade), and set in the environment like Hell Gate London. you could start off as a human from presence level 1 -5 then you change to a ghoul (vamp), squire (hunter) runt (werewolf), from 6 - 10 childe (vamp), priest (hunter), pup (werewolf), then you have a "class" quest to become a full fledged vamp, hunter, or werewolf after that its territory pvp like WOW all vs. all now that would be bad a** !!!!
I like the Idea of KOTOR too.
*** peaon do'urden great granson of drizzt do'urden ***
It's funny how everyone wants basically the same thing and has stated so for several years now, but no company has designed such a game. But anyways I am in the same boat with the majority here. Sandbox style, skill based rather than level based, Pre-CU SWG without the bugs and broken professions/quests.
I would also like to see it be something not traditional fantasy based. So no elves, dwarves, etc. Also I would love for it to not be based on a franchise like SWG and MXO. Instead I would like something like the "Wild West" template mentioned earlier or maybe even something based on another point in history.
Another idea would be to base it on another video game franchise, similar to what Final Fantasy tried to do but better. Think something like a GTA MMO or even something based on the Zelda series would be good too. Either way I just think that the same old BS has gotten tired and is showing. SOE started off nicely with the SWG idea, but incompetence and greed soiled that idea.

Yeah too bad Dune: Generations got axed, I was loving where that was going, but I never did get to try it out.
Well between butchering the hell out of Ultima Online, closing Earth & Beyond, and numerous MMOGs that were in production, I'd say the track record is very similar. I mean they gutted UO to the point where it is unrecognizable from the game I started playing even after Trammel and pre-AOS. It didn't happen in one expansion like I understand SWG did, but it had the same net effect. But anyways, I won't take this thread any further off track with my anti-EA rantings. But trust me, EA is one of if not the worst game companies for MMOGs there is. Shame that Bioware has fallen in with them too.

Real simple...or not..since it hasn't been made yet. But I would combine a few current mmorpgs, main staples etc, to make the new MMO I want.
SWG/FFXI/WoW/EQ2/LOTRO/WAR/AOC
take the best from those, put them into a new setting/world and make it BIG and FUN, but if you take all the good stuff from those games that's what you'll get by default.
I understand people want innovation, which is fine, but I particulary want ONE game to have all the best options from current games.
SWG's sandbox and crafting aspects. FFXI's atmosphere, job system(one character, anyjob any time), party mechanics, crafting aspects(weather and direction faced affect results), the cutscenes and missions.
WoW's sheer fun and ease of play, fast paced pvp, lots of loot and a great world to explore.
EQ2's music, graphics(with help from LOTRO's graphics), again good world exploration here too.
LOTRO's environment graphics, music system, and monster play.
WAR's Tome of Knowledge, Realm vs. Realm pvp and public quests, and massive amount of lore to lean on and tons of classes to play, and each able to heal, fight, tank all in one character.
And lastly AOC's possibly awesome combat, more skill based then by the numbers, or at least more interactive. The last 2 games obviously to be released could add more or less depending.
So there you have it, I'm sure others could add elements from their favorite games. But these are mine.
My vote is still for a GTA MMO with Law Enforcement factions and Criminal Factions. You should be able to foster your own reputation....maybe be a little of both, who knows you might need a connection to the otherside to cut a deal? There are tons of bad cops and state witnesses in the news. Make it realistic.
I know about the APB attempt and loved the artwork, but I think they aimed too low thinking the average closet criminal would be a car thieving punk preoccupied with tricking out his ride, without the pre-requisite trophy girlfriend. Some of us want old school criminals.
I liked SWG's use of languages. Something simular could be used in the GTA MMO to help draw the lines between the different law enforcement and criminal factions. Being mult-lingual in real life is as useful as it is in virtual life. I want to see the world's stage presented to us. Big cities, highway drives for some roadwar action, and the obvious airport and seaport facilities where customs agents have their hands full.
I know about SOE's new Spy MMO. Glad they went with TF2 graphics. Will wait and see how the MMO community receives this genre.
The next Star Wars MMO should have more of the old Republic Coruscant and it's core planets. I wanna see a really well done crowded city scapes with great depths crisscrossed with flying traffic lanes. I wanna stroll down lag ridden main streets with bustling NPC's and PC's in popular Night Club/Shopping/Auction Hall / Banking / and what ever else players need to micro-manage their avatars. I dont want to have to kill space-rats with whiskers and antennae to grind my toon. And there has to be the IDIC philosophy when it comes to player avatar customization for it to be Star Warsy. SWG was close, but not all races seen could be played. Try again.
Lately I've been toying with the idea of an MMORPG that plays with a smoother style, like a console game. Having been brought up on the consoles, first playing games like CoH and WoW were shocking in that the gameplay felt incredibly stoic when set next to titles like God of War or Devil May Cry. Personally, in addition to the skills and sandbox business that everybody loves, a game that has a playstyle similar to those console action titles seems like it would be an incredibly enjoyable experience.
Although, I fear that asking for over the top combo-happy action, skillset depth, and all of the well-loved trappings of an MMORPG is simply asking too much of the current batch of big-name MMO companies, and perhaps even of the hardware available.
As far as IPs go, and this will likely get scoffed at, but I can't help but think that the Naruto franchise would fit well into MMO form (although ideally without quite so many flashbacks). A Rock Band-like MMO with player-created songs and live online shows could be interesting, and if nothing else unique. And I can't help but think that an MMO version of the 2D Mario games, or at least a game based on it, could be fun. The 3D version too. On top of that, the Wild West is still a bit too unexplored for my liking, and somebody really should do something about that. After all, they are currently doing something about the lack of Pirate MMOs...

I'll have to go with the majority (so far) here, which I think we can sum it up with, 'deeper'. A game gets boring to me when there's nothing left to learn. Perhaps even before that when you know you've almost seen it all. One of the reasons I enjoy EVE so much is that I know there's always something for me to learn, something else to experience. Skillbased and Open PvP fits that nicely.
One of the reasons I enjoy EVE so much is that I know there's always something for me to learn, something else to experience. Skillbased and Open PvP fits that nicely.
I've only tried EVE briefly, but the most annoying thing I encountered was the meaningless skill system. Simply waiting days and days for the character to train some skill necessary for using some kind of equipment is definitely not my kind of fun. It's even worse than repetitive grinding. I want a game where there's always something new for ME to learn (or learn to do better). I don't want to grow old while my character learns stuff.
Another thing that bothers me with the (non web browser-based) MMO:s I have tried* is their focus on one single character, which probably sounds like a strange thing to say, but what it leads to is the impossibility of permanent death, and without that combat becomes a lot less serious. I've played a lot of Blood Bowl, and a great part of the fun in that game is that your players are constantly in danger. They might get permanently wounded or killed at any time. Victory and advancement get much more rewarding when there's a risk involved. But there's very little risk of the whole team getting annihilated, and even if you lose half of your players in a game you can always recover later, and the team lives on with all of it's great history intact. I'd like to feel some of that in a MMO too, and that sort of rules out the focus on one character. So I'd like to see a game where you control a whole bunch of guys. It could be a street gang in that GTA-style MMO you guys have been talking about, e.g. A character may die, but the gang lives on.
*It's a short list: WoW, Guild Wars, EVE and a couple of others too boring and insignificant to remember.
Disregarding the actual THEME (aka: Space, Wild West, Fantasy, ect).....
First off, the game was to be just low tech enough to appeal to a large market so that the game can have a STRONG playerbase. But it has to be just high tech enough to render VERY well. There is plenty of wiggle room here for people who are willing to optimize well.
Second, the UI needs to be absolutely second nature. If that means ripping off WoW then so be it.
Third, I demand full control of character development. I want a very sandbox nature to the game in that regard. They could take a few pages from the Bethesda book of skills for this, because I don't want skills to JUST be supernatural attacks. Being able to run faster, jump higher, pull off fanciful flips and dodges are a must. This chains in to....
FOUR: No targetting. Action based combat. Auto-targetting is dead. If I have a sword, then a single button press should swing it and the fact that it lands should be COMPLETE based on whether or not it made contact with the actual player...not random generators anymore. The skills you pick up can help you avoid damage in a very active way, or BLOCK in a very active way. In fact, I want the open the way for counter attacks here as well. An instituted delay after a block or dodge, which can be reduced via higher skill in them, is to be placed so that those with high skill can quickly recover and immediately attack back.
FIVE: Fully player based economy, items, and world. NPC's will be a bare bones thing, existing ONLY for mild PvE story and for initial city placement to give players something to start with. I want loot to be an exact science. If you kill something wielding a short sword and shield...it still HAS those on its corpse. I don't want super items and I don't want a gear-centric game. For a fully player based economy to work, players need to make the best stuff and require materials from set things that actually MAKE SENSE. If you want a leather coat, then you need to kill something that would have skin that could be made into leather.
SIX: PvP, sectioned by server in two parts. One server type for pure full PvP with full loot consequence (Not as big an issue here because its not terribly difficult to get new gear and that isn't gear-centric anyway....its skills which really determine a win) and another with partial loot consequence. In server type two you only lose ONE thing for dying. I give this to player that want a full experience but don't really like investing that much into loss. If server type two doesn't do well, its no big deal. Leave only one server like that and only add more servers based on which type is getting more players.
SEVEN: Full player controlled cities and forts, stores, EVERYTHING. This gives a guild something TRUE to exist for, to fight for, to build their own community inside a community. There will be skillsets for controlling a city, for zoning land for building and for issuing tax so that the city can have a financial reserve for paying for itself and advancing it. I'm sure a tax system will find some people angry at certain cities for high tax. Like in real life, you can just find a new guild or city to stick with if one doesn't suit you. Trust me, with heavy competition and the need to have a strong playerbase to support your guild and city...players will often try to strike a perfect happy balance instead of bleeding people.
I've only tried EVE briefly, but the most annoying thing I encountered was the meaningless skill system. Simply waiting days and days for the character to train some skill necessary for using some kind of equipment is definitely not my kind of fun. It's even worse than repetitive grinding. there was a game that was going to be similar to this called morning you started a toon then you could get marred and have kids or adopted for you next toon it was a blood line thing your kid got like 3/4 of your skills if you adopted and half from you and half from your spouse if you got married the toon would age and eventually die or could be killed in battle and then you would start playing the child who inherited your house and equipment name and your fame/infamy that you lift for them I was really looking forward to that one put then I guess the devs ran off with the preorder money or something like that but that would be awesome I have always been a fan of perma death because you have to have a real strategist to fighting not just stand in one place and hack and the player with the best equip wins

The day I manage to enslave a large bunch of programmers, artists etc to do my bidding I will start developing a MMO will elements of this kind. I've got the whole concept ready ... Man, I gotta practice my mind control skills more and get this ball rolling.
a proper, large scale mmoarpg with lotro visual quality, a proper set of community tools, bug free and with non linear advancement
or
a large scale competitive online racing mmo which doesnt feel the need to use a crap avatar feature for towns.pvp is different racing modes and destruction derby style races including a big free for all arena.free roaming world and cities.
OK, I think enough time has passed. I'm going to going through and analyzing the whole thread and will post back when I have decide on what the majority of you guys say you would like to see in the perfect MMO.
I'd like an MMO that isn't an RPG. A competative city builder (Sim City), a sports league, or an RTS. Something other than skills, weapons, quests, and MOBs. Will it happen? I doubt it.
If it has to be an mmorpg, I'd at least like to see some more genres. Gangsters, American West, Modern, etc.....
In one sentance, what I got out of this thread is the the majority of you wanted the following: A PvP Oriented, skill based, pre-cu SWG with a player driven economy and great crafting with possibly a few elements of Eve Online. Now, that said, there are many other factors suggested by posts that did not make this list of majority and still would be valid in the case of creating an actual MMO, mostly depending on the theme and style of game being produced. I would like to thank all the people who contributed in this thread! You have been very helpful. However, if you would like to request more specific statistics I gathered, please feel free to ask!

But this is just my HIGH hopes.

I want casual friendly (say no more than 2 hours a day), and highly polished MMOs. WOW is the best example and that is what I am playing.
However, I do want different settings. A sci-fi (ship-based like EVE or planet based like AO) MMORPG will be really nice and a good change for WOW.
My biggest hope is that Blizzard will do a World of Starcraft with the ability to be fight on space ships.

Now thats one open ended question!!!!! :-)
Here's my take:
1. A SF universe / galaxy kindof like SWG or a totally redone version from square 1.
2. Extremely open ended wherein you have hundreds of worlds with 100's of minor and major quests.
3. No story Line just evolving random happenings like a galactic threats where the players must band together to deal with.
4. ability to own, create, modify and use your own starship of various kinds and shapes and sizes.
5. PVP and RVR
6. player and Comp driven economy.
7. lots of races and skills!!!!!
Unfortunaetly most MMo ppl want arent possible by any stretch. I really wish they could.
Played : WOW, LOTRO, COH/COV, EQ2, SWG, and WAR.
Playing EVE Online and AOC.
Wtg for SW:TOR and WOD

I'd like an MMO that isn't an RPG. A competative city builder (Sim City), a sports league, or an RTS. Something other than skills, weapons, quests, and MOBs. Will it happen? I doubt it.
If it has to be an mmorpg, I'd at least like to see some more genres. Gangsters, American West, Modern, etc.....
After that...I have no specific requests.
