This game is garbage, a year after release and it still holds most of the bugs that were included with the release... In my opinion, and it is just that, MY opinion. This game is a complete waste of time and not worth even the low, low price of $20 for the box and month of play.
I have to admit I was wrong about this game. I had no idea it would last until 2008. I will be further surprised if it makes it through 2008. I will toast to VG if that is the case. It is certainly a survivor.
I think it will do far better than EQ2 in the long run, it's core design dynamics are far superior, and the hardware will catch upto the level they expected hardware to be at around release time.
it's core design is a matter of opinion, and most people I know don't want to go back to EQ. By the time the hardware catches up their will be otrehr games out that still have the shiny on them. That statement makes no sence.
LoTRO, like the magority of all MMO's out today, uses the same "core design" as EQ.
You play LoTRO right?
Not to mention games like AoC and Warhammer aren't going to be your typical MMO, and therefore may not hold the MMO enthusiest for very long. Not to say they won't be good, but the "core design" of those games isn't going to be quite the same as your traditional MMORPG.
VG isn't the "niche" game that some think it is, or would like it to be either. SOE has been moving it into a more "mainstream" type of a game with each milestone. It's slowing been progressing away from the "hardcore" vision that originally made it a niche game. Now the "niche" part of VG has more to do with it's world design, and community type gameplay with open cities. It's a quasi-sandbox game wrapped up in a generic lvl grind like the magority of MMO's out there.
I'm sorry, but having a "sandbox" feel doesn't make a game niche, and VG has mechanics that appeal to most traditional MMOers out today, the same mechanics that are utilized in every other MMO. If VG is niche then so is LoTRO, WoW, and EQ2.
A niche game is Lineage 2, City of heroes, Eve, and other games like them. These games break the mold and do offer something dif. something that appeals to a small audience; therefore they are niche games.
MMO's have hit the mainstream, and like anything that hits mainstream it will begin to diversify. More MMO's will be produced and developers will begin trying new things to attract players away from older games or to entise new players to the market. The day of "niche" gaming in MMO's is gone. The industry is showing diversity, something a lot of people have been asking for, and that's not the same as "niche" gaming.
This is the first poll since I have been a member on here that had 534 (a big number in regards to every other game thread) that has actually agreed in a crashing thrash.
I think this game will lose a big host of members once AoC and War comes out as people will have realized by then this game will still be in a ongoing cycle of beta development.
If SOE does make a uber come back for this title and the other companies screw up, then it's a possibility that Vanguard will see the light at the end of the tunnel (500k never though).
With me currently I am still debating on selling my accounts to the Chinese farmers ingame based on what they do with the next couple of patches (200 per account looks mighty good right about now).
Everyone keeps mentions AoC and WAR and blah blah blah.. Isn't this what we do? We flock to new things because they are NEW... Not because they are going to be "better" than what we got, but simply because its NEW... Sure lots of players will go play AoC and WAR blah blah.. Sure.. But give it about 1 month.. And the ones who don't like them, will return to the game they were playing BEFORE they started playing the newer game.. Its just human nature, or shall I say, american society?
Anywho, this game is not that bad at all.. Some people like to hail it as the "worst" mmo of all time, and because this is the internet (and we love drama here) that is justified in the smallest way possible.. It seems that this fair weather and bandwagon stuff is how people learn these days.. Instead of trying it out for ourselves, it seems that we listen to other people and let them tell us what to think more often than not.
Most of the folks who scream bloody murder about Vanguard and click through screens and endless forums to come here (Vanguard forums) and hold protests and shout pointless ignorant comments have NEVER even played the game, but listened to one man scream and decided that it was the "right" thing to do..
It's time to be honest people.. This game is NOT that bad.. It may not be the "best" (if there wa a such thing) but it is CERTAINLY average at least and deserves to be mentioned along with the rest of the so-called "top dogs" of mmos...
You know I for one like the vg bashing in the forums, just for the fact that the kids read them and figure VG isnt a game to try.. with all my past experiances with mmo's (most) kids just ruin the games for us "older" people VG is a complex game that requires dedication, and patiencewhich most "brats" today have none. so for those of you that VG is a poor game plezz keep thinking this and keep looking for ur ultimate game ok? the least amount of bs from people on the servers the better it is for all of us who enjoy playing!! (by the way I havent got the game it is on the way)looking so forward to playing.

That is about the least positive view I can think of. Maybe you should play a console game if you do not want people to ruin YOUR game.
Back to the topic: VG died not because people bash it, it died because of a very disgusting launch, after which most people lost faith. SoE appeared (reported) to be working hard on fixing bugs and adding missing content, but that alone does not make it a great game. Its only filling in the missing bricks, the whole game is still far from the original idea of a masterpiece.
It is unfair to criticize SoE. They took over a burning house, damage control alone will be hard enough to achieve, turn around will be a near miracle. It took them a couple years to turn EQ2 around, and the EQ2 launch is not as bad as VG.
LoTRO, like the magority of all MMO's out today, uses the same "core design" as EQ.
Not to mention games like AoC and Warhammer aren't going to be your typical MMO, and therefore may not hold the MMO enthusiest for very long. Not to say they won't be good, but the "core design" of those games isn't going to be quite the same as your traditional MMORPG.
Do you actually know wtf you're talking about?
AoC is going different directions but it's still an MMO. WAR is using tried and true MMO design philosophies just with shiny front ends on them.
I'm not even sure where you're pulling you opinion from but get a clue.
Regardless of what the naysayers scream, I hope SOE never pulls the plug on Vanguard.. I seriously think it is shaping up to be one those heart warming "anarchy Online" stories... Bad release.. Lots of people lose hope.. And some odd years later... It wins MMO of the year awards, and when the new graphics engine pops up, who knows where it will be...
We (the players) are not the only ones to see the potential in Vanguard... Obviously the devs do to because they still are putting in man-hours to continually improve it...
How long before 500k subs? I'll put my bet in a year... OR the first expansion.. Which ever comes first.. Because chances are, that SOE will push PR and marketing through the roof once they fix the game enough to release an expansion... Especially since EQ2 is pretty much on auto-pilot right now..
I'm not gonna lie to you, I still have hopes for Vanguard but on the current track that it's going don't think it will ever pull off 500k in subscriptions (this game is not beginner friendly in the least).
You also say that it's in people's nature to flock to the new MMO or game, that is not true in the least my friend. It's when a game majorly $%^&s up with their subscriber to the point that they are not happy with the quality of the product or action taken by the business that they go looking elsewhere.
I too will be playing Warhammer when it hits not because it's the new game on the block but due to me having a history with the "TT" just as I did with DDO before they $%^& their games dynamic up (if Warhammer screws up I will leave it just like I did Vanguard).
The only true "Top dog" MMO as it stands today is WOW due to it's subscriber base and Guild Wars (2.5 million boxes sold with 1.7 million accounts still logging in "reported in 07").
Again, I hope this really pulls what it was described to do back when I was in beta (knock people's socks off) but currently the way they are going (holding Bard pvp competitons and saying they "might" put in helmets, avatar customizations/styles and "all" of the flying mounts (Unicorns,Wyrms, Wyverns and Griffons) is utter bull$&*^.
Until we see some concrete actions taken with what they said would happen then they will continue to loose subs. Also, a lot of the people in that are joining are still new to Vanguard, give them sometime to get over their amazement of how beautiful the world is and how limited it becomes when you get above level 45.
LoTRO, like the magority of all MMO's out today, uses the same "core design" as EQ.

Yeh my mate was in WAR beta awhile ago before he told me it closed in december or sumthing and said as soon as you login to WAR the first thing you'll think is "this is WOW" lol. Also i don't know anyone in AOC beta but alot of the leaked videos looked esactly like everyother mmorpg too......

AoC is twitch based FPS is it not? How is that anything like a traditional MMO. Because it "looks" the same it's the same. OK. I got a body kit on an old camaro chasis, looks just like a lambo, I'm looking to sell for about 90k, you two interested. You can split the cost. I mean, it looks JUST like a lambo; must be the same.
War is just DAoC with a new skin. It's built around a faction based PvP design with some PvE elements thrown in for those that don't want to just PvP. How is this a traditional MMO. But oh wait, it shares a similar art direction as WoW, maybe because warcraft used Warhammers art styel. Oh hey, it's that it looks the same thing again. Must be the exact same game.
You know I just realized, I could drink bleach. Looks just like water.
In fact, unleaded gasoline looks like waterdown coolaid, I should give that a shot to.
While I'm at it the next time I get a headache I can take a handfull of oxycotin, looks just like asperin.
Hell I can even use motor oil on my pancakes in the morning, looks like syrup to me, must be the same.
I guess you two weren't able to pick up on the "diversification of the MMO genre" stuff I wrote. You couldn't quote it so you must not of understood it.
Edit: Before you tell someone to get a clue, maybe you should think about what you write first.

Well he said the starting areas are esactly the same as WOW and the UI works esactly the same as WOW and all the quests work esactly the same as WOW and many things look similar to WOW aswel. Also he was saying he doesn't get what RVR is cause as far as he can see it's just BG's from WOW.
500k? lol, it has 30k according to http://mmogdata.voig.com/ Once new games come out, it will just dissapear from the list.
Unfortunately, there is a possibility for that number to include the Station Access members who had once played Vangard. With the amount of forum coverage (although many are criticisms), Vanguard should have a higher number of subscribers that it deserves.
I personally had a lot of fun being among the first max crafters and second generation of max adventurers - it seems like a lot has been polished since before I quit (the lack of further content was too much for me leveling back then).
Most agree that the issues with Vanguard's beta and launch left everlasting scars on the title.
As a side note, Tabula Rasa statistically had a worse launch than Vanguard, and is also putting in fresh effort to improve the game. It is possible for both titles to reach the 50,000-80,000 mark by the end of this year, but it may require a restart to achieve 500,000 players.
Well, the OP made a valid question. A valid and most probable answer is never. Which brings us to the next question. Does it matter? No, unless they decide to shut down the servers. Which brings us to a more interesting question. What will it take to recover from the bad launch? (I won't debate if that is possible or not at this point)
The first thing they need in order to recover is a (non buddy-key) free trial.
After that, the devs need to up the work rate, the game needs to catch up to what people would expect from a year-old game (content-wise).
Can they recover? My money would be on no, but I'd like to be proven wrong.
Comments
500K subs ? never, never never. maybe 100k (i'm not sure...)
- needs a BIG PC (with my dual core 3, 3 go ram, 512 ati i only played balanced medium/low)
- release was catastrophic
- 1/4 of servers is in a bad state: halgar
- only 4 servers after the merge
-small TM working on Vg (working also in PS i think)
- not localized
- always buggy even after GU3 -thought GU3 could change things but imo changed nothing-
-there's nothing for high lelv (i mean past 40)
- not enough diplo quest for high lvls
- only 1 raid, 1 year after the release ! (30.01.2007)
----------------------
I canceled my account 1 week ago. Don't want to pay for a beta. Game is brillant but always in beta state. Waiting now for effects of GU4 + trial.

Well he said the starting areas are esactly the same as WOW and the UI works esactly the same as WOW and all the quests work esactly the same as WOW and many things look similar to WOW aswel. Also he was saying he doesn't get what RVR is cause as far as he can see it's just BG's from WOW.

Once new games come out, it will just dissapear from the list.
No game deserves a certain subscription number, Frodo. It has exactly as many subscribers as it deserves.

Sure Sam, no game deserves a certain subscription number - besides what it has!
The first thing they need in order to recover is a (non buddy-key) free trial.
After that, the devs need to up the work rate, the game needs to catch up to what people would expect from a year-old game (content-wise).
Can they recover? My money would be on no, but I'd like to be proven wrong.
Here is your answar:
75 % never................ .
