To little to late. Almost got tempted to give it another go buy think I will wait for something else. Shame, if the game would have been in the same state it's now when it launched it would probably been a hit.
VG is no better or no worse than almost 90% of the MMOs out there,
Yes there is room for improvement, yes it would benefit from a free trail, yes it could do with quicker updates, more content etc,
But it also has a lot going for it, best graphics in any MMO and interesting & unique classes, decent crafting, diplomacy, it is a lot more future proof than a lot of the MMOs out at the moment.
I am sure there will be a free trail soon and hopefully this will bring the subs up.
Even when AOE and WAR come out VG will still be able to hold its own as i beleive it is more of a tradtional MMO.
VG is no better or no worse than almost 90% of the MMOs out there,
Depends on what you're talking about. Performance-wise, it is worse. Much worse.
Gameplay-wise, it's pretty good. Maybe better than a lot of what's out there.
Graphics-wise, it's as good as most other MMOs. It is not the best IMO. LOTRO beats it hands down for beautiful graphics. (I was also annoyed by the lack of good variety of armor in the game. There isn't much variety unless you count different colors on the same basic armor pieces. Of course, that's not unusual in many MMOs).

Exact...Which proves many players are not looking for a GOOD game, but a HYPED game with good forum comments....
...interesting thought it is...
I dont think so. Most people who bought it were looking for a game that did more than what was already out there. Vangaurd isnt that game, but the promises were huge.
Sure it might have held more subscribers for a bit longer but I dont think the population would have been significantly larger. Maybe if it had shipped like this and they had kept a sizable dev team to add in the innovations they were talking about over the next year.

You obiviously have not seen the graphics in Vanguard running on a decent PC.
Performance wise it is fine, may i ask when was the last time you played VG?

Considering Vanguard was hyped to heaven as The Next Generation MMO and people left because it was bad pretty much proves your theory incorrect.
It might show that people could care less a year after a game failed to launch despite its improvements.
Honestly Vanguard is just an average game and there really isn't any reason for anyone to come back unless they are totally burned out on all other MMOs. The future of the game is very questionable at best with the small dev team/player population and the game itself is still a rough around all the edges.
Right now I think it is easy to stick with other games over coming back to Vanguard. The reasons to come back are not compelling enough yet.
I bought Vanguard at launch, and quit a couple months later, and went back to the finely honed polish that is WoW.
Then I turned in a bunch of Coke RewardPoints, and scored a free copy of EQ2 from the rewards thingie a bit after that...downloaded it, but never really did much but mess around with Chargen, then unsubbed after the free month.
Came back to EQ2 for a month this month, got to level 8 or so on a Swashbuckler.
EQ2 actually made me miss Vanguard.
There's SO MUCH that's EXACTLY the same between both games - the choppy, halfassed animations, the spastic dances, the ridiculous "sitting" positions, the horrid camera placement (relative to the models), the lagtastic graphics (unless you're set to Very High Performance or Extreme performance)....The stealth animations are *identical* to one another, as are a number of other animations that made me go..."Hmmm...wonder where THAT came from?"
Yeah, given a choice between the two, I'd take Vanguard any day.
good way to see how people's opinions have changed or stuck over the year.....
amusing thread actually, seing how many devoted people from the start of thread aren't to be seen anymore....
VG will never hit 500k, it has gone from a guess till a fact, it is not the next AO, SoE will prolly either go into a meeting to determine the future of VG, they will discuss whether it should be revived with an expac but most people will prolly go with the fact it's beyond repair and the costs to revive it would just be wasted money.
If SoE has a plan to revive VG, then the VG players will be happy but with such low subs i seriously doubt it. Worst first impressions, downfall of a giant hype, nothing but bitter taste of salt left in the mouths of the creators.
Yep.. Good thing MMORPG.com only represents a fraction of the actual mmo playerbase, or else, we'd actually be in trouble..
Have you noticed, it's usually only the ones with negative outlooks that post to forums here.. No matter which forum you go to, you can never escape the negative folks.. But to be quite honest, the game will die WHEN it dies.. So all the fortune tellers we have in here will have to sit back and wait and see like the rest of us.. Too many miss Cleo's...
First, the game still runs like crap despite all the, 'it's fixed' posts. It's not fixed. Second, it failed at launch and failed miserably due to poor performance, bugs, uncompleted portions of the game, and just lack of polish in general. Third, it's run by SOE now, which is an improvement, giving you an idea of the deep hole this game is attempting to crawl out of.
This game has some things in common with SWG actually. A nice looking game that had potential that released too early. It promised a lot but failed to deliver on those promises. I think players are sick and tired of empty promises.

Yet some folks already SWEAR by Age of Conan as if it were already released.. lol.. I smell...... I smell... History repeating itself in the near future...
There are currently four servers. 1 European, 2 US PvE and 1 PvP. I've seen the number 35k tossed around here and there, but that would mean an average of roughly 9k subscribers per server? That would make for a far bigger population that what I see, but anything is possible I guess.

35k was a guess a long time ago. I would guess they have 5k - 10k now.
Its funny really, all these people dogging this game about bugs, which have really come a long way and most performance issues and bugs have been dealt with. People just love to have something to hate on. Personally the only thing scarier than people giving an uninformed opinion on a game they arent familiar with, is these same people will walk into a voting booth with the same problem. Carry on sheep!

The lesson to be learned here is that people expect the game to work the first time. Games that require ongoing subscriptions generally have one chance to make a good impression, yet most of them seem to release before being truly ready anyway.
It's like eating at a new restaurant; if the food and service sucks the first time you go there, you're probably not going back and you're telling your friends so they don't go there either.

I just played the game again in January 2008 during the free come-back period. I did not see much of a change from launch to justify playing this game. Yes, the performance was a little better but the hitching, chunking, bugs, and falling through the world still exist. There is not a huge improvement. Slight improvement at best.
If you enjoy it, great. Somehow it has managed to survive. I will give it that.

I had played a full month 2 months ago played on my level 20+ to level 28and also started a new character to 17. I traveled across all 3 continents and not once did I fall through the world or run into any bugs that made the game as unplayable as it was at launch. I think the game has come a very long way.

Were the bugs gamebreaking or just the minor annoying type? How many times did you fall through the world? I played for nearly two months recently and that didn't happen to me once.
I also played at release, and there is no comparison for me. Vanguard today is tons better than release Vanguard IMO. I'm not saying the game is perfect today, but it's not the crappy game it was a year ago either. I'm not sure if it'll ever be what I would consider a finished product, but it's definitely moving in that direction.
I plan on coming back for a month after this next update to see what's changed. I'm come back sooner if I had faith that the dev team was large enough to really fix the game in a timely manner. Unfortunately, I do not believe that it is, so I'm taking a wait and see approach.

First it has to hit the elusive 50 subscriber mark. Do they actually have more than one server now or did they merge them all?
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests
