EQ2 Character Creation Opinions...

raptorfalconraptorfalcon Member Posts: 126

I just got the cd yesterday and I am VERY dissappointed.. According the the box EQ2 has an unparalleled creation engine.. blah blah... bunch of BS.
Has anyone tried to create a decent human?? I tried to create some humans the closest I could to my real self and my wife... result darn impossible.

The age slider just makes the characters look more homeless.. setting them young  just stretches the skin like some cheap plastic surgery.

The females look like weight lifters with huge boobs who sat on their ass their whole life and thus it ended flat...

Whats up with the color black??? No matter what I try I keep getting a kind of ugly purple color..

Some races have cool "accesories" well.. why cant all have them?

The hair styles look like a mix between 17th century and and age where hair glue is used to keep your hair in gravity defying positions..

And this is just humans... I believe SOE just BS us really bad.. and oversold what I consider not only to be far from unparalleled but actually crappy compared to systems like CoH and their own SWG.

Your calling a demo version of the character customisation BS?

Lol the game has just gone into Beta and you expect the preview edition of the CC to be the finished version, what BS.

Whats the point of releasing a char creation cd so you can create what your char looks like before the game is released if its not gonna be close to the final product? Doesnt make sense. I believe what you see in the CC cd is what youll get come retail. I doubt theyll change them much if at all.

I was a little dissapointed that they only focused on half of the characterisation abilities. For a demo, i would have expected everything to be available to entice you even further into the game's potential.

What do you mean only half? It seems to me thats all of the customization you can get.... what else is there to customize?

My mum and sister really enjoyed making such characters from that CC program.

I was kind of awe struck at how little customization was available and how simple things like long hair were left out.

The hair implementation in general is just about the worst I have seen in a modern mmorpg.  It looks like clumps of playdoh.  I remember a year or two back when they talked about how advanced their new engine was and how it would allow them to create cloth that moved and folded in response to the environment.  Despite this advanced engine they say long hair is too difficult for them to create...

The color system makes no sense to me at all.  About the only human/elf type race I can make black hair on is half elves and only by selecting brown from the color pallet.  When you select black you get some completely different color.  For wood elves selecting the pitch black color pallet option gives your character purple hair.

Many of the sliders that you would think give you a large selection of options really only seem to have about 3 different settings no matter where the slider is set.  Extreme one way, middle of the road or extreme the other way.

Some of the faces are better then others but I think its just about impossible to make a human female who isn't in extreme need of some anti depressant medication.  They all basically look like they have lost all hope in life and are getting ready to go home to a nightly beating.  image

What few options for real variety that are present are ridiculous like mohawks and rainbow colored hair with a variety of modern earth piercings for half elves.  At least the barbarians have some good variety via their wode markings.

Though it doesn't bother me much there is really no body customization available at all.  You have a size slider which is mostly just to change your height a few inches.

The bodies while well done for some races are horrible for others.  Female wood elves, high elves, humans, dark elves, and half elves all seem to share the same strange body style with their legs mounted on the sides of their hips like a quadruped.

Much like Moorgard has said, everyone has different tastes and you cant please everyone but the amount of displeasure with the current designs indicates they are pretty far off mark for a significant portion of the community.

With all that said, the characters faces though pretty uniform, do look amazingly lifelike.  I am eagerly anticipating the game but I could stand to wait a couple months longer if they would rework the character designs substantially.

Can we expect to see signifcantly more options and changes at release?  Or is this a pretty fair representation of what the final product will offer?

It depends on whether you consider things like I mentioned--ogre beards, iksar scales, some additional hairstyles--significant or not. I imagine iksar players would, but others might have a different opinion.

There may be other details that change. Halfling and gnome skin tones, for example, have been given more options since the Starter Kit was finished. Our lead character artist mentioned to me the other day that human beards were cleaned up a bit and some new combinations added. I can't say for certain whether some of the other customization ranges will change, though they certainly could.

What you aren't likely to see is any radical changes to the skins or hair. We're quite pleased with the skins after the recent revamp, so minor tweaks aside I wouldn't expect much different from what you have in the Starter Kit. I know our hair is probably the most-criticized aspect of the models, and looking at it under the microscope of character creation probably highlights its flaws. The character team did change the way the hair colors blended which helped give it a bit more natural appearance, but we're not going to change the fundamental way the hair looks.

So to sum it up, there will be some more options and some tweaks, plus moods in game that will let you set facial expressions. While the latter isn't part of character creation per se, it does add another aspect to individualize your look.

SOO as you all can see.. with very few details changed... what you see is what you WILL get.. I for one could wait up to 3 more months if the hair stops looking like my son modeled it in play doh.. and the humans stopped looking so hideous..

I'm not as concerned about how the characters look as I am about how the game plays. I can live with what I see on the CC now as long as the game is ready to play.

In other words, if the game is ready to rock, I wouldn't want to wait any longer just to spiff up the character models. Looking at the in-game screen shots, they look just fine to me.

I agree with you in the fact that the most important thing is how the game plays.. BUT the EQ2 character creation system was one of the things they were most proud of.. remember the 2 statements with wich they described it.. 1) unparalleled 2) you will be able to recognize a friend just by looking at the avatar, not the name. Just lock the hair up and click randomize and you will see what a big BS that statement turned out to be; you will see your char or ones very close to it quite often.

IF what they described and marketed with such big words turned out like this.. I am really starting to lose my trust in the other aspects of the game.. lets hope I'm wrong and the game turns out to be the greatest game ever..

I think the CC actually chose my profession for me. If they keep the same CC then I'll probly be a Paladin or Guardian so I can cover my entire body with armor so I dont have to look at my character's physical features. ::::38::

I was a bit dissapointed by a few of the races. The bust sizes were a bit over exaggerated and the hips were huge but other then that I like the humans... I play only male characters primarily because.....well... I am a male and they do not look as bad as some of the female ones...

You know what I found out? Is that every time I go back to make another character, it doesn't seem as bad as the first experience when I thought to myself "Wtf is this crap on my screen". It still needs a lot of little tweaks and fixes, and SOE already stated they are doing that, but still being stubborn on changing the hair.

So try not to get too mad at the CC disk because you and I both know we are going to love EQ2 when it comes out (I get to love it in BETA muahaha).

First, the game has just gone into closed beta. Its not even in open yet.

Second, just because YOU cant get what YOU want for your HUMAN character doesnt mean that you cant get what you want in a Dark Elf character or some other person might not like it. Going as far as calling it a bunch of BS is quite harsh. It might be your opinion yes, but quite a rash and not very educated opinion.

  • raptorfalconraptorfalcon Member Posts: 126

Actually the whole thread is about opinions.. so anyone can say what they think of it. AND I'm not the only one that feels cheated in the character creation.. just head over to the official eq2 forums and you'll see.. In fact there are many people posting side to side pictures of screenshots that SOE released about characters and how they look now, just see the huge difference between what they offered and what they gave..

BTW lol good idea ill cover my whole body in armor and avoid to show myself in public witout it :P I feel bad for most females since male characters look way better designed than female ones..

Damn... seems like all people do is whine. You get a free CD with a pre-order of Everquest II, you whine. Want to see bad character customization? Try playing Lineage II. They have five hairstyles and two faces for each race. Talk about bad customization. There is no age slider, no color choice, no cheek, skin color, chin, eyes, eyebrow, etc. I am happy with the customization. I managed to create the character I wanted to.

Dude dont even go there... Lineage 2 although they had very limited customization their models were better then the EQ2 models. I mean an elf looked like an elf. Although they only had like 5 hair styles they were GOOD hairstyles that FIT the models unlike some of the ones from the EQ2 CC. I dont think most people are complaining about the "Lack Of customization" they are complaining cuz the models themselves look bad.... IE Hunched over postures...huge breasts and wide hips for females...Skin that looks like plastic (IE barbie dolls) and dont tell me they dont cuz they do... Thats the main problem people are having with them...

Others are complaining cuz there arent enough "Long Hair" for the females or what ever.

The CC will be a ton better when the game ships that with the CD, as its unfinished right now. So there is no point of posting a final judgment. Lets see how is it on launch day. Then we can talk.

Well if you read what moorgard said about the CC he clearly states dont expect any major changes to the char models cuz they just did a revamp on most of them. So basicly what you see is what youre gonna get as far as models are conserned. Yes youll see more hair or more beards or "Special" things like ribbons in the hair or whatever but the models themselves wont change. So no matter how many options they add to the the creator it wont be enough cuz the models look bland. You add a nice flowing hair to a plastic/bland face it will still look plastic/bland with the hair also .All be it different looking without the hair but it probabaly wont be enough to make a difference from the CC we see now.

EXACTLY my point.. except for a few MINOR details and polishing (according to moorgard) this CC is what we will get in the final version.. and to the people that say we should wait till release.. erm dot you all think that after you pay for it is already too late?

I say play the game in Open beta to see if its worth buying.... If they dont have an open beta and push the game sooner then expected dont even bother buying the game cuz its gonna be SWG hell all over. I just hope they learn from their mistakes in the past and make this game for the people and not to fill their wallets!

Just because a game has an open beta doesnt make it a well designed game before release. Though L2 had some good graphics, it was a very poorly done game. AC2 and Shadowbane both had the same problem. So to base your gaming choices on an open beta or not is kinda bad.

Im not saying if it has an open beta it will be good im just saying if they have an open beta you should play it to make your judgement on wether or not to buy the game. But most people are just gonna buy the game anyways so it doesnt really matter.
