Yes they have eliminated virtually all facial customization. Currently each of the 16 races have like 4 faces, 4 hair styles, some things facial hair and thats about it. So for faces you are limited to like 2x4x4x16 variations. However, while we lost the ability to tinker with chins, cheaks, and various other facial details we have gained helms which is a whole new bit of customization and one that is actually quite a bit more visible. So we gained something and we lost something. I'm also expecting we will gain even more customization options with the next update. But time will tell. Maybe we will know when gu5 hits the test server in 4-6 weeks or so
but they really, really managed to srcew ALL of them. What a waste...
WRONG! *cough EQ2
Ok, I could write a VOLUME about EQ2. It sure is the only more or less good game, I PLAYED it for 2-3 years. (Lost track...) But its WAY behind its potential as well! I mean, come on, they added so much things, many good ones, and has what? some 250k subs? Even Eq1 has still more, I guess.

Do any of you really believe that other players run up and look deep into your avatars eyes and see the depth of your devotion to a realistic face ?
Disturbing attitude. Everyone plays differently. I know the first thing I do when meeting new people is to zoom in to their face. Afterall, its such unique feature that sets one player apart from another. While I can't recall the name of the people I've met, I do remember their faces, some of which are very unique, like a necro with a erudite/clonehead, a chinless wonder of a tank, etc. And as for helms, just 2nd day into GU4 and 50% of the population already have it turned off.
As far as "atmosphere" goes, that's not something that can really be developed as an afterthought and then tacked on. Vanguard will forever be without it.
Sigil attempted to invent a new IP but in effect proved why a lot of developers, especially in the MMO arena, don't bother creating an MMO unless its based on an existing property.
Sigil had tens of millions of dollars, I'm sure they could've bought something. If nothing else, they could've drawed upon free, common domain stuff similar to Dark Age of Camelot's usage of Arthurian, Norse and Celtic myths.
One could argue that Sigil at least used typical high-fantasy stuff, like elves, dwarves and orcs. The problem with that though is that its typical, so Vanguard is as generic as the 20 fantasy books everyone thumbed through as kids during library field trips only to walk away with the Hobbit.
All and all though, there's no novelists, composers or non-technical artists onboard Vanguard's development staff. Even if there were, building "atmosphere" is something fundamental and systemic through all matters of assets that were built for the game in the beginning. If it isn't there now it never will be.

No its not a disturbing attitude.
It is realistic.
Opposite of you taking the time to memorize the insignificant facial features of an ingame avatar of someone you do not remember the name of. It is a UNrealistic expectation to have the customization that Vanguard had and expect the game to run smoothly and to have helmets(ugly or not). This is even beside the fact that this process is ongoing but the whiners who gotta have it all now and do not comprehend the nature of MMOs and the process of how they develop with TIME, those whiners will constantly cry over changes.
The rendering of the millions and millions of different facial and body structures was taxing systems on the lower end of the PC systems spectrum. SOE not Sigil understood that in order to gather more subscribers to this game the hardware barrier had to be lowered more.
You know this is ridiculous having to explain something so BLATANTLY obvious to all of you. You play these games you all should fricking realize how this industry works and how these games develop. For some reason... Elikial(sp?) your the biggest culprit here. You should understand this moreso i have seen you on MMORPG.com as long as i have been here and yet you still have yet to grasp this simple concept.
Fyi, i am not making any excuses for SOE mainly because i will never forgive them for SWG, but just piling on blindly is retarded, sophomoric, and uneducated. Take a few minutes and THINK.

The game was running fine with 24 ppl raid sharing the same shard with 2 other guilds. After GU4 however, APW is lagged to hell yesterday. And not just in APW, it was lagging badly in many other places. Moreover, I'm actually experiening more stuttering than before, places where I normally would not experience any. If its an on going process, then implement it when its done, not half-way through. There is a test server for that. While MMO change over time, I have never seen anyone tearing out a major game feature that no one has a problem with before, or maybe because I've just been sticking with EQ all these years.
My poor pretty little druid is now the but ugliest wood elf on Telon.
Er, well. All the wood elfs are butt ugly now, we all look alike.
Not to mention the head piece I have is the worst looking thing ever. It looks like I have a giant mushroom for a head. Honestly, someone on the art team has a rather phalic imagination. On top of that my robes are green and my head piece is a horrible looking shade of red.
Since when did people cut the hoods off a cloak and wear it as a hat?
But I get like 3 extra FPS, but then I play with pretty much everything maxed and my fps was fine.
The character optimization did absolutely nothing for the performance problem. Why haven't they figured out that it's when things are loading. FPS doesn't matter when the textures are loading unless it's loading correctly, and they aren't loading correctly. I'm sorry but it's a bunch of BS.
In other news the changes to the druid are nice and much needed. I like some of the new abilities, being able to turn into an ant and stealth is actually pretty cool, and they made phenomenon mean something. My weapon buff proc is no longer a weapon buff proc. Other devs should take note of this, if you're going to give a class a bunch of buffs, make them useable by the class casting them.
My druid actually feels like the damage monster he's supposed to be and it doesn't take all of my energy plus a tap root to kill someone know. Just a shame that my toon is but ugly. Not real happy about being lied to but at least the class is more fun to play now.
First, just generally for some peoples information, I do NOT converse with people who call me names of whatever nature. Those people go straight to my ignore list. I respect opinions but I wont meddle with folks of such a disrespectful tone. Just fyi to save your precious time.
Second, besides all detail, which may bother you or not, the most important reason to quit finally is the SWG deja vu. After the NGE SOE promised to work on it. Now, after almost 2 years passed SWG is in a state where a greater part of the NGE problems are more or less solved. But do YOU want to wait and pay 2 years? What I see in the "speed" of the Game Updates is EXACTLY the same mix of slowness and "two steps forward, one step back", and I dont want to wait until 2015 until VG is nice. Its again a skeletomn crew - and how can one blame them! - likely working over hours but still too little and too strangely a selection of things they chose to work on.
For me it simply comes down to the fact I am a customer, I have certains wants in a product I buy, and if they arent applied in a certain time, I dont buy it any longer. Thats basically something undebatable, its MY wants. Period.
I just wont go throught another endless promises circle like the post-NGE. Never.

Look at the mess SOE made when they said they were going to "fix" rangers.Makes one wonder of the devs really understand what they are doing.
Although i agree with the lack of atmosphere etc, as a Ranger myself friend i have to say that you can't be further from the truth in that statement.....the Ranger changes were the best thing that soe ever did in this game, It gave me the opurtunity to play my ranger as a "ranged" character. and once people realised that change isn't always a bad thing, 80% of the ranger population admitted that the changes were for the best.
Although in the past i have been a self admitted "vanboy" i have to agree with the above. Why do we have to pay to have a game fixed? ok i dont mind paying for an evolving game but it would be nice to be offered maybe a half proce subscription untill the game is in a state of 80% bug free and performance is 80%
Now that would be a bold but welcome move by any company in my book.
I really love people that level up a character to level 14 in a few days, and then write ten page long review about how much the game sucks.
How about a player who has been in since Beta back in June of 2006...took a toon at launch to level 50 and have several other alts in their 20-30's and he says it sucks?
It does suck. Silius and the rest of that lousy dev team has driven Vanguard into the ground. The game mechanics hardly resemble what 200K people signed up for back in the day. That and taking good, unique things out of the game like EE and replacing with things such as rest xp, brotherhoods, instant traveling and BOP off all nameds is just plain dumb.
The game is going to get what it deserves and that's a declining sub base. Once AoC and Warhammer are released...bye bye VG!! Thanks for nothing, SOE! You've done what you have consistenly done in the past and that's ruin games!

So, uhm, you've been playing since beta3 and now with GU4 it's enough?
I can think of alot of earlier statements about their intentions of the game and earlier things done that is "same" or "worse" then what is in GU4.
You got your chance to make a reference to SWG NGE and so bash some SOE, and you took it. That's truly original.
Meh, some whines about incoming riftways and next they whine that there aren't anyone at the house plot, cheezus.

Not a bad idea but at this time I'd say they are already there... Maybe they can credit peoples accounts for the first year or so at half price
Right now the game worked pretty good and the bugs are minor so I'd say they have gotten the game upto production quality. About the only thing I'd point at as a bad issue still is the hitching.

That's the thing though.
I think that more people are complaining about the hitching then the FPS. Although there are a lot that aren't happy with thier FPS to, but I think that that's more to do with peoples expectations of what they believe thier system can run. I never had FPS problems, even on a mid grade GPU; it was always hitching. The loading has always been a problem, and I didn't see any improvement in the loading. I'm still hitching when things load, and I lost customization of my avatar.
3 or 4 fps? Are people seeing anything better? I didn't, and as I expected I don't want to play showing my head piece. I'm really not happy with the default appearance, and that is really all you get. Bat ears and a huge chin if you're a Wood Elf; wich I am.
They didn't bring sexy back, they didn't improve performance, and they took away a feature in the game that I used. I already thought the combat was fun so the changes to the druid are kinda mute.
In essence I got nothing in return for what they took away. That's not cool. I'm not sure I would say that the only bad issue is the hitching. They took out a good feature in the game and left a bad one. That's pretty bad in itself if you ask me.
3 or 4 fps? Are people seeing anything better? I see less drops of fps, more stable fps, when in groups or have some people around me. But did the FPS meter spike? -Nah.
They didn't bring sexy back, they didn't improve performance, and they took away a feature in the game that I used. To bring something back it has to be removed first. Let's wait and see what that is.
As earlier quoted, here is it again. Posted as early as in 2nd Nov.
"This bone is connected to that bone...Well, not any more!
Future optimization work you'll be seeing from us is focused on enhancing and optimizing our Player Character models. If you have a weak stomach, you may want to look away for a minute if you are closely attached to your character. (just kidding J) Seriously though, we're going through our first phase of character model improvements that will eliminate unnecessary bones. What does this mean for you? This means that your computer will not have to work as hard to render each character which means faster performance all around.
We're bringing sexy back...
After phase one is complete, we'll be moving onto phase two where we'll be increasing the visual quality of our character models. Not only will we be delivering you a character that is more appealing to the eye, but we'll also be delivering a model that utilizes fewer resources and is easier on your computer. Again, win-win for everyone! A brief update on this is that we're almost complete on our visual improvements with human characters and we'll be moving onto adjustments to animations and to the different body types."
Vanguard... despite my regular ranting I had hoped, and I clung to them. Somehow I really had hoped they would work to bring "soul" to this game, which it so sorely lacked. But no glamorous title of being "The Legendary" can pay me off for the balderdash of GU4. What a farce. For me the customization always was important, and now... its behind even some F2P games! All characters I had worked so meticiously on their looks seem like chubby ken/barbie clones. I was really pissed when I saw HOW many sliders they took out. VG has some damn good classes, many races and a big world, which is all good. But in one year they NEVER worked against the sterile atmosphere, the lack of "soul" and made this world more "alive". Its a matter of feeling, where it always lacked and VG never did a single step to work on that. Instead they take out customization, add the most ugly helmets I have ever seen and make MORE skill juggling. For me its the final blow. Funny, it is the first time in MANY years, since I started closely after SWG launch, that I am totally without any SOE game. Finally salvation from evil? Heh, who knows. I didnt lack patience. Time and again I gave them the credit of doubt and my credit card, but enough is enough. They can have their plastic worlds for themselves. Its a pity, I see the potential of their games, seriously, but they really, really managed to srcew ALL of them. What a waste...
Bah, hardly anybody can tell the difference pre GU4 and post GU4 on the looks of characters.

Myself and about 16 other guildies have just resubscribed and we're having a blast! This game is soo much better then it was at release. We're having an even better time since you quit. My only hope is that you will take anyone you knew in game and make them quit also.

I hope you enjoy wasting time in a game that's going nowhere but down.
Yes because looking at the back of your hours long customized head for 99.9% of the time is so damned important to gameplay. Seriously i understand the time players took to make there toon look the way it does but really.... unless you sit at the char logon and dream of your avatar, why does it matter ? Do any of you really believe that other players run up and look deep into your avatars eyes and see the depth of your devotion to a realistic face ? More then likely there just happy the game is starting to perform better. Course you can insert the normal blathering about how you do not notice a performance increase and whatnot i am sure it will be coming eventually. Honestly i have a ton more sympathy for those who made a in game living by deconning named drops then i do for the graphically distraught.
That is exactly the issue in the discussion. You do not think that customisation of face matters, since you are more concerned with gameplay or lags. Sure, that is a way of enjoying the game, the way you go after. You do not care to run into another player and zoom in to look at his face. Now we know that. You are 100% willing to sacrifice facial for game flow. 100% checked. OK that is it.
How does that extends to the OP? He has all the rights to enjoy it differently. To him, maybe he has no issues with some lag, but find that customisations is in itself a lot of fun. WHY NOT? Projecting your values to others is dictatorial, mocking other's value borders on prejudice.
I know of many players who choose weapon and armor for looks, and I know of a lady player who plays a tank but picks some leather pieces for sheer looks. I know that a lot of people enjoy CoH/CoV for the sheer process of customising their alts. Yes, we have once held a beauty contest at the level 1 birthplace. We keep making alts and standing side by side for screen shots. Why not? Since when MMORPG are played for the sheer robotic process of nuking and hecking?
Performance, power performance, ... somehow we lost sight of the fact that MMOs are virtual worlds, in which people are trying to live out a life cybernetically. Not just engaging in mindless virtual combat with AIs or each other all the time.
The customization changes were for the better. I went through it more than enough times through different characters, and really most of them were ridiculous. They mostly made characters only mothers could love.
I hardly noticed a difference between my characters. Once or twice I wish a selection hadn't been taken out, but I didn't care about it enough to get furious or jaded obviously.
As to the guy who said all wood elves look ugly, they always did. Can't believe I got one to lv.18. <--- wouldn't mind if wood elves were deleted from the game.

That's the thing though.I think that more people are complaining about the hitching then the FPS.
I wish EQ2 had VG's world design.
Wish Darkfall would release.

Bah, hardly anybody can tell the difference pre GU4 and post GU4 on the looks of characters.

Wut? Err... Ok, if you say so. For me they seem to be as strong a day and night. *shrug*

Well said, Orthedos. My thoughts exactly.
Removing limitless facial features doesn't affect me, so I don't care about it.
Removing Equipment Experise doesn't affect me, so I don't care....
Bind on pickup, rest xp, instant travel, death penalty, etc, etc doesn't affect me, so I don't care about it.
I sure hope I don't see the same people complaining when they finally get around to dumbing down something that does affect them.
