I'd say the Sharks in EQ2....Everfrost zone I believe.  They looked very realistic...scared the crap out of me swimming all alone...hahahaaa

    Hi, for me it was;

-The first troll you find in DDO's water works and as a warforged char it was also the rust monsters, they could smell my char a mile away.

    -The sharks in EQ2, something very primal happens to me when I spot them in the water, { these guys have been nominated several time already by pepole in the forum, there dev must be very proud of these guys. }

Great post, by the way, thanks op , it's been fun to read.

If it scares you then you got your money's worth!

I can't think of a time I was ever scared in an mmo.  But the Resident Evil series and Fear actually made me scream and almost jump off the couch a couple times.

Early on in Asheron's Call the one thing that terrorized low levels was the reedsharks!

    I still hate those things.

Although I never went there because my character was a non-fighter, but a pirate boss went there to gather seeds for me (and after dying 3x with just the poisonious crocs despite his epics and trying to RUN away from them), the worst MMO monster I can proclaim is on Voyage Century's Hurricane Island....

    T-Rex.

Yes, a dinosaur that takes the game's highest epic armored team (with refined stats) or whole guild to take down, with still incredible damages to them (why it's called Item Mall Spam Island). Eating TREES isn't enough, it'll eat a team of players for lunch!

For me it would have to be the Agents in Matrix Online.

A group of faction mates and I would be doing something and out of nowhere an Agent appears and chases someone down, killing them instantly.

The first time I ever saw an Agent though was the worst. I was doing a mission alone in some old derelict building, there was this rather long flight of stairs you had to climb. I just finished the mission and I was about to leave, upon opening the door to the stairwell I saw an Agent standing right in front of me.

I'm pretty certain I jumped and shouted some kind of profanity.

I ran and I died. As my body was laying there I started laughing about it.

Every encounter with an Agent ended up getting similar reactions from me.

However that's likely because I get really absorbed into everything I do, and I'm exceptionally excitable and enthusiastic, lol

While this may be slightly off-topic because it is a single player RPG game, the monster (actually a human) that scared me the most was in The Elder Scrolls 4 - Oblivion.

Out in the wilderness there are occasionally rundown and trashy groups of houses.

There are usually inhabitants and they often look somewhat deformed i suppose?

Anyway, I was in one of the villages (called Hackdirt I believe) and the villagers seemed rather intolerant of outsiders. After speaking to them for a while, they began to speak of a "Brethren" that would deal with me if I did not leave the town. After wondering what kind of screwed up cult they were running in this town I decided to wait and sneak into the caves under all of the houses that night to look for these "Brethren."

Now keep in mind that I play my game with extremely low brightness to make things more realistic. I also put the game on max difficulty and usually end my characters story upon death. It makes his life more valuable and thus I am more careful while playing.

I was sneaking around the cave (my character was a stealthy one of sorts) and I stopped for a moment because I heard something. I didn't have a torch out because I didn't want to give away my position and I had a strange feeling something was nearby. I whipped a torch out, and to my suprise I saw nothing. I put it away and walked around some more until I found a fire, some bedrolls, and essentials slung about the area. I was snooping around waiting for someone to walk by not expecting me when I heard something behind me in the dark. I turned around and got my short sword out. I couldn't see very well so I moved a little to see if I could catch a glimpse of what was behind me, when I heard someone grunting. I stopped and heard footsteps. The footsteps continued for a moment and then stopped, leaving a few moments of silence. After waiting a moment I pulled out my torch and there were three hackdirt cult members standing there staring at me, each one looked relatively inbred and had eyes that were bulging and spaced too far apart. Not very tough opponents but for some reason the look just gave me the chills.

Long story short, after a short (awkardly frightening) staring match I filled them full of stab wounds.

The one on the left had some nice shoes.

For me it was player Bounty Hunters durring my Pre CU Jedi grind. It kept me on my toes thats for sure.

The dread effects and many monsters in LOTRO are well done. It has some nice creepy areas also.

Wasn't an mmo, but that doesn't seem to be stopping people

Was playing resident evil 1 years back with a group of my school mates at night, i think it was about half way through when your going through the house again. You go through an L shapped hallway and suddenly the first hunter in the game jumps out from around a corner. Doesn't sound to frightening, but the camera angle was perfect, made me jump half a mile Didnt help that my mate droped a cup of coffee on my head at from the momment also.

Then the fun begins...you hear a bang...bang...bang coming from the door nearby, which splinters and out comes your first Ogre in the game...big, hairy, ugly, and club swinging...and can one hit kill most characters at that level if he gets a critical.

Scared the hell outta me the first time through image

Same man, except after I killed the leader I didn't pay attention and had my screen turned away from it, so all I heard the bang and boom, but I also seen a big mace i think it was coming at me from the side and it was like WTF THERES MORE! But ya scared the hell outta me wasn't expecting it.

More recently would be Reqiuem, at nightmare hour these little child like devil things would pop up over the mine, the first time I seen one it popped right by my face where I had the camera zoomed in as I was taking screenshots and then boom crazy ass devil child face. That one had me outta my chair a couple feet.

Another flashback in from Everquest I when i played my wee barbarian shaman and went into everfrost for adventures.Ran around in the zone when someone suddenly yelled "FROST TRAIN TO HALAS!!"

I was like??? seconds later i realized what happened when i saw a higher level character running with a frostgiant on his tail.I stood there with big eyes and didn't know what to do but decided to run.

I ran like my life depended on it and it did because 10 seconds later i ran into aggro and panicked and ran back right into that giant and was flattened by the frost giants mace.

I think Everquest had some of the best WHOAAAA experiences. It meant something to die when you lsot experience and had to fight your way back to your corpse.

I had a lot of good scares too in Ultima Online but that was because of the PK's when i was standing out in the wilds and minding my own business and mining or whatever and suddenly 6 guys comes running up to me and BOOM i found myself lying on the ground while they cut up my body and took all my belongings leaving a rune on my with some insults on it.

    Fun times.

Later when i knew i was doing in UO i had some serious payback when my GM thief stole some of their priciest belonings.

I still remember the day where i stole a towerdeed right in the middle of brittany bank desquised as a guard.I overheard 2 players talking about a trade and followed them around for 20 minutes and eventually i stole this guys towerdeed the second it landed it hes backpack.

I ran like a madman out of britbank and non of them yelled guard until it was to later and i was gone.It was the longest two minutes in my life before i could stash my towerdeed in my bank.

I bet that was a WHOA moment for the guy i stole the deed from

I miss those good UO and EQ days.

On topic:  In SWG sometimes you'd get to an area before anything could spawn around you - since I was a ranger it was my job to track the big big monsters - sometimes i'd get to an area and have the damn thing spawn on top of me.

Off topic:  The vampires in the RPG Morrowind.  They'd just stand there until you got too close then they'd shout at you and attack you - the first time it happened I jumped out of my skin.

I was never scared of a monster in a video game. However, when I watched one of those freak out vids (car driving down a mountain road, beautiful scenery and then AAAAHHH! some crazy, nasty face is in yours). Man, my workmates pulled that on me and I jumped and screamed like a little wuss. Man, they were rolling. I'm a big guy, and to see me in that state made them tease me for months afterwards. Those bastards. :)

I want to mention 2 offline games:

    Black and White (1)

before the patch you'd be sitting there building your little settlement and training your cow (how could you pick anything but a cow???)... and all of a sudden you'd hear a whisper... but you didn't really hear it, it was faint.  You keep on playing and hear a little whisper again... and again... is it saying something to me?

You turn the TV off and keep playing.

    "...death..." *in a breathy whisper*

    ...what the hell?

...scared the living crap out of me for ages before I figured out it was my computer and it was part of the game.  But man, that was pretty enthralling to figure out A) what was going on and B) what it was saying.

    Doom 3:

This is the first game I had ever played where I felt I needed the lights on.  The whispers in the backround, the faint screams, the ambient mood it set, the giggling baby...

It got old fast once "all hell broke lose"... but it was definately mega freaky before that.

The first real scare playing a game: The first time I actually jumped in my chair, well almost out of it, was playing Wolfenstien, the very first one, when one of those germans popped out behind a corner and yelled.  It felt like a bolt of lightening hit me.

I will never forget that one.  I knew games where never going to be the same again!

The first real mmorpg that :  AC - My first meeting with the bugs!!! I took my little Jungleious into the Harvester dungeon trying to help some player, got lost, thought the queen was after me, that was my first experience with panic!!  lol

In all the MMORPG's I have played, the monster that has scared me the most is the Lag monster. Too many times has he reared his ugly head and caused my doom...

That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!

Nothing in an mmo has ever made me jump ( I would not say scare for any game, it is hard to be scared of a game, movie, or book in my opinion)

I think mmos just are not immersive or have enough action to really make me jump.

Think the best moment I can think of that has made jump however was in the first Half Life, walked around a corner and I hear a thumping noise, next thing I know some bloody monster jumps out of the wall lol
