Don't assume I am broke because I disagree with your statement. Note I said "for some". No one here was complaining we were talking about mmos cost, sub, and can they be a success without suds. Not a debate on income levels and how we should spend our money.
what do people male out as if playing ann mmo is a huge investment....OMG....IT $60 + SUB
As most of us are adults (or at least I would assume) we probably all have many bills - a mortgage, car payment, phone payment, etc, nevermind if we have kids or not. Sometimes $60 bucks is a lot of money, especially if you don't get more then 1 month of use out of that game.
if your really struggling with the bills then just done play...don't go complaining about it to the world
and save up..its what you probably tell to kids who wanna play an mmo...
Who said I was struggling, and who said I don't "save up". I'd just rather take the $60 I would spend on another game and put it to a more satisifactory use - like saving it.
If you don't enjoy mmos enough to pay, don't play.
Maybe that is one of the problems this genre is facing - too many people willing to pay money for something in a hope that they'll like it.
Would it be so bad to offer an alternative to paying $60 for a game client? How about a free game client download with a slight increase in the monthly sub to balance it out?

90% of mmo have some form of trial to see if you like it or not....
I agree with the OP for SONY (issues with their billing lead to consequences).
For other MMOs companies? I dunno. If they play fair and are nice, I am willing to pay some money for something I really enjoy. $60 was the same price in the 1980. $15 by month, if done fairly, it mean you are playing that game, $15 for something I use is not too bad. $15 for something you don't use and already cancel (Sony), that is outrageous.

1. You should never be just going out to buy a 50 dollar game and not know what your buying, research it, get input, go to someones house and watch them play... get a trial... MANY MANY ways to see what your getting for the money BEFORE you buy. In the end it is your decision to drop the cash on a product.... If you don't like it and it sucks.... That would be your fault for buying it in the first place. Next time do some homework.
2. If you are so poor you can't afford 60 bucks, or "60 bucks is alot of money". You have NO BUSINESS WHAT SO EVER being a pc gamer or an MMO gamer for that matter. If your that hard up for money you need to be spending less time in the game world and get a better job. Like one poster stated... that is nothing more than a set of wings and some beers at hooters 3 nights week to some of us. If you can't afford some hooters wings or beers without worrying about your bills or kids... MMO and PC gaming is not where you need to be. If you wanna game get a commodore 64 and go to town on it. Leave the 1500+ dollar systems and 60 dollar MMO's and 15 dollar fees alone....
3. My last point and this is really the most important one... To gamers, games are entertainment. To developers, games are a paycheck. For those who say they are skeptical nowadays to give a company many because of the EULA, Game May Change, Moon being aligned with venus causing a celestial big bang.... whatever reason, DON'T. These game companies do whatever they want/need to for the profits. They will change a game anytime and as often as needed to make the profit. They do NOT care about you. It is a business.
Now if you do not get that, and the "Game May Change During Online Play" phrase on the back of the box bothers you..... You play WAYYYYYY to hard in the game and have real trouble separating virtual reality from actual reality.
At the end of the day, it is just a game, and we are sitting on a fourm devoted to these game.... keyword here being game.
Some of you need to just unplug.... Go outside, smell a flower, look at the blue sky for a change, realize that planet earth is still spinning around that huge fireball we call a the sun. Nothing in Azeroth, Norrath, Paragon City, Camelot, 0.0 Space, Vana'diel or any virtual world will ever change that........
And it is not about the $60 Housam talks about, i would happyily pay twice that for a good quaility game.
Any producer wo trusts that there product is quality could give the client away free and then charge a monthly fee and then ask players to pay for the expansions, as by then it will be evident that their game is quality.
For example, WoW is free, however BC would cost about £40. This way everyone is happy.
VG game is free, loads of people will play and the pop will be high!
Even though the game is buggy people will not be so disgruntled and wouldnt mind coming back when the game has improved.
I see. You're saying you don't mind paying for the client only to find out the game is crap. Your $50 goes to help pay for the development of game you aren't going to continue playing past the 30 days that came with the client purchase. Brilliant, just brilliant.
No because you do the free trial first.
And buying games you can’t rent (PC games) has a risk of getting a game you may not like. I have been buying games for 25 years and yes a few did suck. That’s life.
I't's been my experience that most new games do not offer a trial, and as my preference is to join a game from the begining so I can help to develop the community from very early on it essentially leaves no options but to keep paying for a game that fulfills what I'm looking for.
But again, what is wrong with the idea of a free cleint download with a slight increase to the monthly fee (and with this idea there would be no "free first month")? The current standard can leave us being taken advantage of by developers, so as a consumer I think this helps to ensure minimal lose while the developers still get something.

Eck...Some really condesending reply's in this thread. For some people $50 is alot of money and I can understand that they want the bang for their buck.
Exactly!
Since when did more value for the products we buy become a bad thing?
I wish I could be there when life takes a turn on all the posters here that are turning this into a simple money issue...since they obviously lost the concept of attempting to invest wisely..in even more mundane pursuits. I believe the OP did not have a problem paying $60 + $15 mnth...just not on a big box of shite. Yeah you can trial run ...check the reviews...etc...but it you have no control when 3mnths down the line they nuke the freakin hell out of a game you initially liked....well...I dont think some form of tiered payment..is too much to ask.
I try to find a free trial first as well in most cases. This is not the case in Conan as there is not one right now as the game has not been released. I have purchased the pre-order and will live with it.
Sadly I could not find one for Pirates of the Burning Sea or Vanguard. I spent the money on them and I hated them both. I played each for under a month. Vanguard was not so bad. $19 dollars for three weeks of use even if only for a couple hours a night is pretty decent value. Pirates however was horrible in my opinion, I thoroughly disliked the game and it in no way was what I had expected through the advertising and hype. Sadly I should have known better and I paid the $60 dollars for it. Now Sixty dollars for one weeks worth of game play is horrible value and it hurts just to look at it on my shelf. I am not wealthy, I have a family and my budget is tight.
I do not fault the OP for wanting to find free trials and no one else should either, it is his choicer and one that could save him and his family money. More power to him. Likewise if you do not mind spending the money and you feel it is worth it, all the more power to you as well.
I restrict myself to ONE subscription a month. I refuse, I REFUSE to pay for more than one MMO at a time. It is a limit I set on myself, it is a way I control my budget. Does that make me a bad person? Would someone like to flame me for setting my own financial spending limits?

And here comes a random internet person and prove my point...
That is a good thing, however, no one does anything about it. They come here and let it all out on MMORPG like any of these users care.
If your tired of buying crap games.... then don't. Like I stated previous, no one holds a gun to your head and makes you buy them. If the game is crap and you buy it anyway that is your problem. A million and 5 ways to test something out beforehand or at the very least get feedback from those that do play it or tested it.
1 in 5 PC users play wow prolly, go knock on 5 doors in your block and I am sure someone would be willing to show your their 1337 Tier 6 paladin lolz noob omg bbq. (bit of useless immature wow humor). Sites just like this one can give you plenty of insight on a games, community, base subs, issues, pros and cons ect.
This is just one site of like 1 million on the world wide web. Multiple magazines out there on the stands to get a professional view of all upcoming games.
It is no ones fault that developers in the past few years have all produced crap. Some are ok and fun most are crap. Then again every good game has a free trial, ALL of them, that are worth playing. I can name every decent game on the market right now, and I bet ever one of them offers at least a 7 day trial.
Even if you play the trial and then buy it for $50, then 2 months down the road decide you hate it, oh well it is just a game... move on to the next trial.
I didn't read anything else but the main post and I have to say you have the right idea. I haven't purchased a MMO Cd in a long time and I have no interest in it either to say the least.
It is kind of ridiculous that sometimes you need to pay $50 for a damn install cd then $14.99 right afterwards to figure out it's alright for a month of game time.
Playing: Diablo 2, Medievia, SWG EMU In between: Eq Mac Retired: Guild Wars (2x), EQ, DAoC, PSO, Tibia, Runescape, WoW, SWG, Maple Story Waiting: WaR (hesitant), New Star Wars MMO

I wouldn't dream of bashing a man for setting a budget, I myself have one. It is the only way to truly save money. Social Security is going down hill and retirement you can forget that, by the time your ready to retire nowadays your almost dead anyway.
Budgets are great, everyone should have one. I also think that 1 MMO at a time for most is a smart idea.
Basically tho what I got from the OP is he won't buy box retail games anymore because they are all crap.
Well that is his choice. I will tell you this tho, all F2P games with the exception of Guild Wars and steaming piles of poo compared to any P2P game out there.
I don't really get the ops rant, research a game, if it looks good buy it. If not then don't. If it's good at the start and then turns to crap. It is only a GAME a form of entertainment never ment to last until doomsday anyway. Move on to the next.

No, most MMO packages come with a month's play time for your 59.95 fee.
And that fee normally only lasts the first week or month, then drops to 49.95 or lower pretty quickly.
So you are basically paying 35.00 for the client at that point. Certainly nothing to throw away, but as mentioned by others, you will have options to determine whether or not you like the game in advance.
And keep in mind, just because "YOU" don't like a game, doesn't mean it sucks, just means you don't like it. They have a right to make you pay for trying it, even if it turns out you don't wish to continue playing.

Kyleran, mind if I use the yellow as my sig? I do not want to plagiarize your saying.
Oh well...A nice rule to have is that most games suck nowadays and is hardly worth the effort to even read about them in some random game site/magazine. So with that thought, save your money for the good stuff. Go rampant on the budget market. Lots of gems there. I find myself reinstalling the old classics, both mmo and regular singleplayer games.
And as a last note, I would love to be the fly on the wall when life comes knocking and makes some of the posters life suck, economically atleast. Life have a tendency to do that and I suspect some of the posters havent seen that part of life yet. Maybe then they will change their view on money. $50 may be pocket change for some people but to others its the difference between having a meal that day or not. A little off-topic but really...some got the most screwed up view on money out there, when they are busy living the american dream, with 2.4 kids, 1.8 cars in the garage and a nice 6 figure income.

Good luck with that.
$50 is not a lot of money.
Things I spend $50 bucks on a week, (I assure you I am not alone)
$50 x 3 in gas a week.
$50 a week on a ps3 game.
$50 a week on food for work, $10 a day x 5
and all but the gas are things not required just things I do.
In a month I blow
$450.00 in gas
$200.00 on console games
$200.00 on food
$45.00 to subscribe to 2 DAoC accounts (1 is mine 1 is wife's) and 1 FFXI account.
$60 on movies I take the wife out twice a month to the movies at $30 a pop.
$200.00 on my kids for random crap, cloths, toys, games whatever.
__________________________________________________________________
$1155.00 is what I spend a month on useless random crap.
I am not alone in this venue as most of my RL friends spend the same amount on a month on their habits and kids.
My suggestion on those who say $50.00 is a lot of money.... go back to school, get a degree and get a nice average paying job.
There is always www.computertraining.com
They say they can have you microsoft certified in a short period of time making 50k a year....
Or at least that is what they advertise *shrugs*
QQ
*edit - and before anyone trys to defend their job at the quik-E-mart. I spent 6 years in active duty military, going to night classes 5 nights week, while raising 2 kids at the time (now have 3). So I could get out and make the type of money I do now.... I do not have much sympathy for those who do not wish to help themselves and complain about money issues. If you set your mind to it, you can accomplish anything no matter what the odds are stacked against you.
And here comes a random internet person and prove my point...

Nothing is wrong with wanting a quality product.
Pretty simple if you ask me.
Playing: Diablo 2, Medievia, SWG EMU
In between: Eq Mac
Retired: Guild Wars (2x), EQ, DAoC, PSO, Tibia, Runescape, WoW, SWG, Maple Story
Waiting: WaR (hesitant), New Star Wars MMO
90% of mmo have some form of trial to see if you like it or not....
Is that not a fair solution?
if you wanna be there from the start..youve gotta be willing to pay and take risks of it being a crappy game
They have a right to make you pay for trying it, even if it turns out you don't wish to continue playing.

but its QFT btw. lol
