The thing is AoC will run on almost any rig. It's been proven in BETA.
As long as there is NDA in place, I don't think anything can be said to be "proven" about the game. Only when actual players get the freedom to tell of their experiences, we can really say that something's been proven.
But with that said, I think it's just incredible stupidity for anyone who is not on the beta to go and preorder a game that is under NDA. If they want to purchase their game without knowing anything about it, they shouldn't be the ones to complain.
Only if Funcom doesn't release the NDA at all, and doesn't allow players to have those preorder advantages without risking and buying product they know nothing about, then Funcom is trying to cheat their customers.
Agree. Seems to me that this isnt discussed as it should be and that why this thread were created.
Theres alot more to ask of Funcom then they provide.
Remove the NDA and open up beta to anyone that preordered the game so they can try out before they make a decision they want it.
Thats assanine. The point to pre-ordering a game is to make sure you get your copy on the release date. That means your looking forward to the game and want to play it day 1 regardless. If the game turns out to be crappy vanguardesq then yea you can be alittle pissed. However if you pre-ordered and have concerns about the game then the joke is on you, not the company. That goes for any game. If your just not sure then wait a couple weeks or a month. You wont fall that far behind and you will see how much people enjoy/dont enjoy the game.
The one thing pre-orders do for a company is ensure they will get some of there money back that they spent making the game. Your job as a consumer is to decide if the pre-order is what your looking for BASED OFF THE INFORMATION RELEASED AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE. If you decide it is great. If your not happy with the current information thats out or have worries about the game dont pre-order. Thats your responsibility as a consumer.
Personally I will be waiting to see. I think AoC will flop. I hope not but I think it will. Like you it bothers me that the NDA hasnt been lifted yet. Its still a monthish out though so they could lift it any day. The idea behind some of there stuff looks good on paper but I want to see how it all pans out first. Guess what.....that means I'm not going to pre-order. If I did pre-order even with all my questions I would sure feel like a dumbass.
Seriously, when you pre-order an MMO you are taking a risk, if you think you are going to feel cheated if the game doesn't live up to expectations then you shouldn't be pre-ordering it, just sit back and be patient.
Wait for reviews and forums to come alive with information, if you are still not convinced then wait for a free trial to become available, if you simply can't wait and want to play it at pre-order stop moaning and prepare for the possibility that it probably won't be everything you hoped it would be and it may even be a lot worse.
Welcome to MMO gaming, it's risky, complicated and very expensive.
As previously mentioned these games costs tens of millions of dollars to produce, open beta is a not a god given right, it's primary focus is to test the game, despite the fact that it is often used for marketing purposes.
I'll re-iterate, if you are worried about feeling cheated because you pre-ordered the game and do not like the prospect that you will have paid for a game you may not like then DO NOT PRE-ORDER IT, wait until after launch for reviews, videos and maybe even a trial in a few months time.
Nah I dont and never will feel cheated, as I cancelled my pre-order today. Also, Harafnir, just out of curiousity, do you report every single forum member who has even the slightest negative thing to say about a game?

Saying it works like this and that isnt informing us that it will work in hardest demanding situations? Will it be unplayable? A lagfeast? There you go, in your case that was probably the right thing to do, maybe you'll buy it after launch when you can make a more informed decision.
I pre-ordered primarily because I intend to play AoC for a while at least until the next big title comes out ( though I won't play Spellborn). IMO, Funcom is big enough and tough enough to put out a decent game at the start and if there are a couple of months where 'fixes' go in weekly, then so be it. What comes out at the beginning will, not might but WILL have issues here and there. All newborn MMOs do. I made the choice to play the game because I think given a bit of time the game will flesh out to be something really decent to play.
I did have a month of grumbling over the Beta selection (early Beta) when I found you couldn't update your DxDiag file from the old ones (I put mine up 2 years ago and long since updated my PC) as well as the 'more you post in the forums' rule but that was Funcoms decision. If they missed out on a good Beta tester because of those restrictions, their loss.
Also, one question that came up in this thread was about the PVP massing of 15K persons. I haven't read anything about it but my guess would be that they will give you an access code, allow you into 1 or several limited areas (like a very large instance) and allow you to create a character which Funcom's servers will auto-level to 20+. It wouldn't make a lot of sense from them to 'test' PvP and then have 50%+ of their players off exploring maps. Nor would it make sense for them to have players at level 1 roaming around...How much PvP can you do when everyones a 'nothing' waiting to develop. ***This is my opinion only and not based on anything more than logica and past experience with limited Beta tests, so take from it what you will.
Cheated? I personally feel fine. I think Funcom has done a decent job of keeping the fan base informed. I'm just glad they arn't like those tools over at Adventurine. They have cheated their player base.......for years now. ~Hairysun~

Now this is a troll if I ever saw one. PREorder is not 100% safe since you have not actually played the game. Do you even understand what the word PREorder means? It is not a ripoff, it is a chance for some players to get some extrabonuses on thier faith in a game. Its not in ANY way anyone trying to cheat anyone and you are NOT forced to even CONSIDER buying a PREorder if you have the slightest doubt. You are ONLY trolling the board, tyring to throw cow manure on Funcom without any facts information or any hint of truth except your own negative destructive frame of mind and pure juvenile trolling personality.
Reported.
Hehe, one game's fanboi is another games troll it seems. A lot of avatars in these forums that in one instance is suspicious borderline paranoid and in another instance naive. That goes to DF and AoC fans alike.
Imo predorder isn't bad unless you give those gamers an advantage over ordinary customers. If you don't buy this game unseen, you'll miss out on this and that. In a game where levels means everything in PvP, a 3 days headstart is gold. I'm sure a mammuth mount is cool also. This exactly what happened in Vanguard, right ? It's not a ripoff ? Time will show. ..
In the mean time, don't preorder and try before buy I say.

It's a valid question.
But if the customer doesn't care enough about what they are buying, why should the devs and publishers care ?
I disagree with Aragon on this. The problem isn't that Funcom may or may not cheat their customers, it's that the customers let them. If you are OK with this system, fine - don't come crying Funcom cheated me afterwards. That is why I will never buy a game untested. Perhaps you should as well.

I don't think your concerns are too unreasonable, but if you ask for information or do some research you should be able to find most of the information you are looking for. Funcom has released alot of information about AoC including computer spec information, what systems will or will not be in at release. There are currently signups on gamespot to sign up for a weekend beta test as well. I don't agree with your allusions to doom and gloom. Just ask and look and you should be fine.
Cheers!

I did the pre-order a few weeks back and I am very happy. The thing is AoC will run on almost any rig. It's been proven in BETA. Now I will say that to get the most out of the game from a visual standpoint, the better your rig the more enjoyment you will have.
In the end, you can still have fun playing one badass game no matter what you are running.
It will run on every rig you say? Can you give me a quote on that?
Will it run on best possible graphics?
Will it run when you have +200 players onscreen? I havent seen any video of that yet, have you?
lol...
Read my post again my little troll. I clealy state almost any rig. I don't purpose you attempt to load AoC onto your Commodore 64. But al the same nice try!
Troll?? Im no troll. Im discussing Age of Conan, Funcom. Lets say im not that hyped as you is but i think my questions is very accurate.
And you is telling me it will run on any rig? You mean i should just take your word for it?=)

To much info about a game in closed beta can hurt a game. People hear about the unfinished areas, bugs, and the like and think it is going to be the same at release.
It hurts the sale of what otherwise may be a good game.
I think ANYONE that pre-orders a game is accepting the fact that they are taking a gamble. It is the risk you take for your early ordering freebies.
You do not like the risk? Don't pre-order. Funcom is not "ripping off" anyone. You are taking a gamble and they are letting you.
Who would be dumb enouph to feel they hafta buy a new rig just to play one game? If you are gonna get a new PC then do it cause you feel it is time to upgrade. To buy it just for a game, before you even have the chance to try the game is a waste of money. As stated in other posts, the better PC you have the better the game will run on higher settings.
If your PC can't handle it, then perhaps it is time to upgrade PC anyway for future games...n not whine n complain about having to buy a new rig for a game. Or just stick to the older games you enjoy.
@OP In my opinion feeling cheated before May the 20th is absurd. Funcom has not promised to deliver on any of the points made in the original post, so there simply cannot be any rational feeling of 'cheated'.
I think that the information available is at least satisfactional, of course the more you know the more questions you can rise, so no matter how much info they release there will always be people asking for more. Without a doubt I would like to know more of the game and how it plays and try open beta, however those are not my or anyones rights. Funcom is entitled to release as much (or little) info as they see fit, if you think they have not informed you enough then do not buy the game - it really isn't harder than that... And no amount of whiny posts is going to change it.
There is nothing to really [prove until this NDA ios lifted.
But OP, do you feel cheated that Darkfall hasn't been released for 7 years? After all, it is clear you just came here to bash the game for no reason.

I really feel no problem with what they did, and are doing.
I think gamers have way to big a sense of entitlement. Everyone thinks they should be a tester of some sort as a means to "try the game out." Thats just not the case. I havent played AoC, but im buying it. I could end up regretting it, i could end up very happy.
There is risk in buying stuff, sometimes you dont get what you paid for, sometimes you get more.
I also think Funcom has done as good as any company ive ever seen at putting out Podcasts and dev diaries answering 99% of the questions I see people asking in these forums but are too lazy to search for.
I also think gamers are reluctant to believe the game isnt made for them, its made to make money. Dont believe me? I found it quite interesting Warhammer waited until a week or so AFTER thier pre orders went for sale before annoucing they wont be released until xmas. They had no NDA lift when pre orders were announced, most games dont. Get over it.
I guess im saying there are no sure things in life and games are no different. If you want to be safe with your money wait till release and see what people think. Thats the safest thing to do. I find most gamers just arent willing to do that because they are just too curious. But thats not Funcoms fault.
If it is a known developer with a good history who is putting out more than a dozen screenshots and some tech demo videos, I'll pre-order.
If it's a nobody/new developer who has never put out a game before, and doesn't feel the need to inform people of the quality of the game via videos showing multiple characters at one time, combat mechanics, UI, etc., they won't get nothing from me 'til I get to play it first or it's released and the reviews by players after the first couple months are good.
Funcom had a bad release with AO, but what they've done with it over the last 7 years, along with the quality of their other non-mmo games, gives me enough faith in their ability as a developer to consider pre-ordering.
NDA is still in, no date for open beta. Will it be a lag-feast? Will my computer handle the graphics or do i need to buy a new one? I don't like NDA's. At this point we can't know.
Very little information about the game. Will i be able to try it out before they send my preorder box to me? Never do a pre-order, you always have a risk you dont need to have
If the game dont live up to the hype will you as a preordering customer feel cheated? I didn't make a preorder so I cant be cheated, If I buy it, I'll do it knowing what I buy.
And what negative impact will that have to the MMORPG genre? Same as always, people will complain about it, Im used to it, most of threads here are about that.
Is Funcoms treatment of their customers hurting the MMORPG genre? Dont think so
Are Funcom ripping preordering customers of their hard earned money by not delivering enough information? Is your fault if you pre-order, nobody forced you to make it. Dont preorder and you cant be ripped. Anyway, is not a big deal, just another game. Dont trying to troll, sorry if it sounds like it. Just giving my answers to your questions.

Is hyping a game and then cashing in on it through preorder before NDA is lifted, OK ?
It's a valid question.
But if the customer doesn't care enough about what they are buying, why should the devs and publishers care ?
I disagree with Aragon on this. The problem isn't that Funcom may or may not cheat their customers, it's that the customers let them. If you are OK with this system, fine - don't come crying Funcom cheated me afterwards. That is why I will never buy a game untested. Perhaps you should as well.

Just thought I'd fix that for you so you would not sound like a troll.
@OP
In my opinion feeling cheated before May the 20th is absurd.

I really feel no problem with what they did, and are doing.I think gamers have way to big a sense of entitlement.
I feel cheated by Apple. They haven't released the specs to the next generation iPhone and worse they haven't invited me to test one.
It depends on the situation.
Cheated - no, as I did not yet buy the product.
Suspicious - yes, as I don't trust the overhyped titles.
