SzarkSzark News ManagerMember Posts: 4,420

Funcom has announced that the population of Hyboria will grow by 50,000 starting May first as that is the date that the open beta for Age of Conan will begin.

50.000 aspiring barbarians may enter Hyboria on May 1st 2008.

Funcom, Eidos and IGN are proud to announce that Open Beta for Age of Conan will start on May 1. The Open Beta will be hosted exclusively by IGN’s popular game download site, FilePlanet.com, as well as being offered through partner IGN sites such as Gamespy.com, Tentonhammer.com and Warcry.com. The application pages at FilePlanet.com are now open for registrations, and gamers from across the world can sign up. As 50.000 gamers prepare their Hyborian assault, rivers of blood are about to flow, and it’s exclusively available through FilePlanet and IGN partner sites.

Of course;a fileplanet subscription is required.

Course it is. Can you imagine trying to download a beta client as huge as AoC through anyhting less than a dedication professional download site? Even with the level cap and (presumably) limited content in the open beta, it's still a helluva lot of traffic. Makes sense to bring someone like Fileplanet on board.

Sure it's more money, but it could end up being a saving for those looking for a taste before committing to the preorder, and then find out it's not their style for whatever reason. And presumably it will help to silence the 'End-Of-Hyboria-Is-Nigh' conspiracy theorists who believe that Funcom trying to pull another AO release is the reason there hasn't been an Open Beta so far.

Think the real `stress test' will be trying to stay sane while 50,000 nubs spam the chat channels and try to gank fellow lowbies... fun times!

    I'm lookin' forward to it.

    Torrent?!?

Seriously.  Making us go through FP or Gamespot for the pvp beta is all about marketing.

To clarify:  This is not an open beta.  It is, in fact, a closed beta whereby one needs to subscribe to a service to apply.  There's nothing "open" about it.

I'm not really happy with Funcom's choice, but w/e.  It just frustrates me that they told us all along there would be an open beta, when there's really not.

    Quoted for emphasis.

FC got the pay-off for an exclusive, it's the only logical explanation.

What they should be doing is holding the download on fileplanet, but giving out 50k keys,  Not only that, but they wouldn't screw it up like Gamespot did.  They would hand them out over a week or two time, that way they don't get overflooded with downloads (hmm, I can't remember which company did that last time).

But still, it is clearly for marketing.  They should make it free to download with 50k keys to give out over 1-2weeks time.

All users can register now for the Age of Conan beta event notification list. You do not need to be subscribed to register and get instant email notification when beta signups begin.

Beta signups will require a FilePlanet or Founders' Club subscription and begin next week!

AWESOME!!! I DONT HAVE TO BE SUBSCRIBED TO GET EMAIL NOTIFICATION!!!

When I read the whole bolded "You do not need to be subscribed"  I got my hopes up, told some of my friends, made a big ass out of my self, and then I saw I NEED A SUBSCRIPTION!!!

Yes I can . They used the Beta as a sales pitch.

You can be a member of  Fileplanet without buying into their subscription plan. I know because I'm a member and I don't pay a fee.

I bet the complaint reply's in this topic come form those "free to play beta players" and not from those who actualy want to try and help test their game.

I mean seriously what  a BS seeing people moan and whine about needed a sub to fileplanet in order to download the beta.

I'm glad they doing it that way, maybe the cheap wanna be players will stay out of this game. As open beta's in most mmorpg's i tested seem to bring in the worst type of people.

In order to enter the open beta, you need to be more than a free member. I tried.

It is an M rataed game, they can't let just anyone in.

I'll be awaiting your impressions, you can find me in Liberty City.

    I call BS !

thats not! an open beta you funcon marketing monkeys. one reason more for people to prehate AoC if they have to register with a spamvertiser for the chance to get invited to the beta. and ofc lied again, fc people said they learned from the mistakes that NC made with TR.

the open beta is a lie

  • jamosjamos Member Posts: 17

hmm i wonder if the install will require 35 gb of space like the beta apparently does ...I think its gonna put alot of people off.

If that were the reasoning, then 15,000 gamespot users (free account) wouldn't be playing this weekend for the PvP event.

    Bad decision FC

Elitist way to piss the fan base.

"Yes there is open beta , but you have to pay for it"

    Well , how about this.

I will not pay for open beta. And i will not buy your game until you give me a way to try it - without paying for it.

LOTRO did it, PotBS did it, everyone does a Fileplanet beta these days.

Those companies also widened the beta to non-Fileplanet a short while after, so we can only keep our hopes up.

That said, at the moment this is the only way to play before release unless you're already in beta. If you really want to see the first 13 levels for yourself then go for it. The tutorial zone covers the first 20 levels so I doubt we'll be seeing the 'real' world.

The game is pretty cheap though and does launch with 80 levels available only 20 days later. Even if you only played it for the month's sub included it's good value.

Yes torrent, like others game do. I.ex WoW uses torrent for everything, even game patches downloads and it works perfectly. And wow is millions of players, not only 50k.

No, the matter at hand here is 15$ x 50'000 keys = 750'000$ cash.

    I spot a trend here/

Open Beta - pay to get in

Early entry - pay to get in

I wonder what other micro transactions are waiting for us?

Although if it is a true "open" beta the NDA will be lifyed on May 1st and if it really that bad people will be able to post on here.If the NDA is still in place then it isn't open at all.

actually, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Let's say, 200k people see the ad for the FP thing, and all subscribe to get a chance at a key. Only 50k get them, but FP made the $$ off all 200k.

It's a scam. plain and simple.

Yes, other games have used services like FP for distribution, but as far as I recall, not limited to paid subscribers.

Yes, but you wont be eligible to download or get a beta key. It requires a founders club membership (i.e. paid).

  • CrezaxCrezax Member UncommonPosts: 80

The payment is good. It's not expensive, but require a CC... Hopefully that will keep all the 15-year old kids out of the game, and people will actually do some beta testing. (even if it's "open beta")

I m full support paid Beta , its 7.00 monthly to download from Fileplanet , I believe someone said its 60 cent a user to download , the fee to goes to bandwith , staff and a fee to paid to the game developer for letting them use the content.

I dont see the problem , Open Beta = Open Public , thier is new barrier for you joining Fileplanet access, and downloading the client , but a fee of 7.00 for 30 gig client. Someone has to pay for it , even with Ad support on Fileplanet , they need to make money off you folks.

Personally I like it better when they make you pay for the full client to get early access. But most places are offering the pre release content for 5.00 without a promise to buy the full game.

Also they arent doing this for age protection , Funcom has no age protection on Conan , they wont even submit thier name to things like Net Nanny , and certain senators have visted the game , deem it excessive obscene + easily to access. (which is the same sentate who stired up Priest Online anti violence groups)

No , I think this ok , you all have to understand its a business , they got development cost and need sometime to make those up , to show investors they got a market big enough to begin an expansion and figure how the size of thier live team.

Someone has to pony up for beta and bandwith. Me? I m active member Fileplanet for few years now , I normally pay a yearly sub for me and my brother to use it. It comes out to be 3.00 or so a month , I get prime slots in beta (sometimes make good money selling beta codes to people)
