Hey guys, I am kinda new here and know almost nothing about computers but I have a problem. I just got my character creation disk for EQ2 and my comp. won't run it because of my graphics card. I don't have that much cash right now but I found one that I think would work but I wanted to get some advice first. It is the PNY GeForce FX 5200 128MB DDR PCI Graphics card. It is listed on the best buy website for $120. Just wondering if this is a good deal and more importantly if this card will run EQ2 for me. Thanks in advance for any help.

the first one is the cheapest of the two, but the ram is half the size and as well is from a not very well known company. But I would suggest that you go with the second. 30 $'s more than the one you are considering and IMO much better. I'm kind of an Nvidia man myself, but ATI makes great cards for cheap prices.

It's not a bad price for $1,735.97, but you are always going to pay more for a pc when you get someone else to build it. I would say you could save yourself about $90 and order the Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro from newegg.com or zipzoomfly.com for around $200 and put it in yourself. You are spending about $300 to $400 more than you would if you ordered the parts and built it yourself, but the nice thing about getting someone else to build it is not dealing with mobos that won't post, bad memory and other fun and enlightening experiences when you build one yourself.
Stay away from the GeForce 5200 at all costs, ESPECIALLY if you want to run EQ2. I've got friends in EQ who have 5200s and have graphics lag there, there's no WAY it'd be able to perform in EQ2.
Also, check sites like Newegg and Tiger Direct and even Zip Zoom Fly. They're much more likely to have a better graphics card selection, with MUCH better pricing.
I noticed the PCI slot choice, and although it's been mentioned, it does bring upo the question: Does your motherboard have an AGP slot? If it doesn, I suggest buying a motherboard that does. That will also help in the long run.

I'm thinking of getting a Sony Vaio as an all purpose PC for me and my wife. I'm looking at the RS600 series that has the digital video recorder in it. I'll admit that I'm not much of a techy...I just like to play games. The specs are as follows:
Case ( Battalion-101 S-Series 15.4" 16:10 Wide Screen WXGA 1280x800 LCD TFT Notebook w/Li-Ion Battery, Universal AC Power Adapter, Deluxe Carrying Case Original Metallic Silver Color )
I'm not sure if my last post went through or not... Just wanted to say thanks to everyone anyway. I'll probably be getting the 2nd one you mentioned DaShiz. Looks pretty good. I still have no idea what the difference between PCI and AGP is but I will trust you guys that the AGP is better Thanks again.

Just look at it this way.
PCI = Peripheral Component Interconnect
AGP = Accelerated Graphics Port
Really shouldn't have to explain more why you would want AGP over PCI for a graphics card. Good Luck!

upgrade time soon Im going to get a new mobo (abit - probably) and a AMD 64 3400+ (clawhammer) and a new card, but i still cant decide between 6800 and x800. Ive been reading a few mags, they say the 6800 owns doom3 and the x800 will own hl2, but what i want to know is hows ati copes with opengl driven games (doom3) and how the 6800 handles more DirectX driven game (hl2). I know that the GT owns the pro but in XT and Ultra its alot harder to choose.
I have a Geforce 4 4600 card and was looking for a newer card... My only problem I am not sure what to get and I heard the Geforce FX line over heats if it is running for a long time and intensely. I fame for hours or days and love my card now because it never locks up. But I want better
Any suggestions?

It really depends on how much your willing to spend. If your looking midrange, the Radeon 9600 is a great card (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-320&depa=1). If your looking for something a litte more pricey i reccomend (along with a large number of others) the Radeon 9800 (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-268&depa=1), it presently represents the best value for money in terms of bang for your buck. Although it wont play the latest generation of pixel hungry games (Far Cry, Doom 3 and soon Half Life 2) with all the eye candy turn on, it'll still knock out a great performance. I cant reccomend anything in the FX series over the Radeon series really becuase the FX series has nothing on ATi's range of cards. The 6 series however is different, the latest batch of cards (6800 nvidia http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-150-069&depa=1 and X800 ATi http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-364&depa=1) are a big step up from the old 9***'s and FX's. I think, and others may disagree, that the 6800 is better than the X800. I see people complaining that the 6800 Ultra is $100 more than the X800 XT Platinum, but as of yet ive seen nothing of that, they are both have a similar pricetag (depending on certain brands). Which is quite a hefty one. SM3.0 will make a difference when it comes down to it, and thats where the 6800 has the edge.
There are a lot of hard choices to make when buying a graphics card, its down to your own personal opinion, and thats what you have to trust at the end of the day. Im trying to sway you neither way between ATi and Nvidia as its evident in this post, im a complete neutral Alot of other places you get fanbois shouting the odds, dont listen to fanboi's .
