Another cancelled pre-order here too.... not just because of the early access fiasco, but more because of the way FunCom is handling it by blaming the retailers. Who ever heard of a company that will restrict pre-order customers three days before launch? Certainly doesn't sound good and definitely not a company I want to spend money on.
They are not "restricting pre-order customers" they had a limited number of early access spots, for whatever reason. You can pre-order and get the pre-order items.
When the pre-order box from Best Buy CLEARLY states that you get the war rhino AND early access with no mention of a limitation until you read the code card inside that says "some restrictions may apply".... that's restrictive and clearly a scam.
Are you talking about restrictions on the early access or restrictions on pre-ordering? You original post stated "Who ever heard of a company that will restrict pre-order customers three days before launch?"
I accidently got two early access keys from my retailer and I gave one to my friend yesterday to join in Hyboria tomorrow. He had no problems on registering and getting the client with all the early access goodies. Weird that there is some sort of limit for people to enter in EA, or did they just remove it?

As far as the pre-order box from Best Buy is concerned... Pre-ordering and Early Access are one in the same.

it was said somewhere at the launch that they had set up for 600,000 early access spots and those are sold out. I'll keep trying to find the article I read.
the only thing Ive seen stated is they had tens of thouands for EA
Whys everyone blaming Funcom? Eidos is the publisher, they are the ones that tell Play, Amazon ect what to put on there website they don't deal with Funcom.

That's nice and all that yours says taht, however the one I recieved explicitly states " Early Access is a benefit of the pre-order" Nowhere on here does it say that there is "Limited Access" or that you "might" be able to access it. Also, there was no announcement on the website where it says to look "registration page". So yeah, some of us have a right to be pissed.
True, yet it says "You may begin downloading the game client software and installing as early as May 14th". The word "may" is a not a guarantee, then it goes on to say "Some restrictions apply, see registration page for details". Also after reading this "There is a nominal fee of $5 that covers the cost of the download and includes 10 days of additional game time". After reading that it should've been clear you weren't purchasing early access with your pre order, yes?
Most logical people would've thought "Hmm I may get it and have to pay for it seperately and restrictions apply, I probably don't get it guaranteed now". Even those that didn't check it and didn't get into early access would look back and say "Oh well, I should've looked harder". However we seem to have a plague of biblical proportions, not of locusts but whining punks screaming "Funcom gave me cancer WHHHAAAA!".
Never said I didn't know that I would have to pay for access. I read that when I purchased this. Had no problem with that. What i was under the impression of was that I was purchasing the Pre-Order, which a benefit of was the ability to purchase the Early Access for the stated fee. Nowhere did this or the so-called restrictions, which were nowhere to be found on the registration page, state that there were limited numbers available. If something is a benefit then it should be available.
The phrase"This Key Also Unlocks..", which immediately follows the information about downloading and character creation, signals that you get the early access if you pay the fee. It shows that it will be available and that this code unlocks the EA and the Pre-Order Mount.
What "May" indicates there is when you may begin to download it. "May"in that regard is an acceptable substitution for the word "can" (I.E. Can/May if you want to, or you can wait until you want to) . Had it said "you may be able to begin downloading..." then it would insinuate that you might not be able to for some reason. There was no information where it was state it would be about restrictions. You can't say that there are restrictions and then not give the information where you say it will be.
It may have been an error on Funcom's part. Mistakes happen all the time, I have accepted that there are and there isn't anything that can be done, I'm just venting a frustration. Is there something wrong with having somewhere to vent? I thought that this is why this thread was started. This is not a "plague" as you call it, it's merely people using their right of free speech to speak out and vent.
I purchased AOC weeks ago on a preorder from gamer.com. Today I find that funcom is not going to honor my early access key. And I will not be able to get early access. They cite there was limited availabily but they continued to give keys to retailers. Below is my purchase of a Early Access Key ( Not a pre order key ) and the official statement from gogamer. Buyer beware funcom is not an ethical company. Dear GoGamer.com Customer, Thank you for pre-ordering the Age of Conan™ from GoGamer.com. As a pre-order customer, you will have the chance to experience the glory of Age of Conan™ combat before the rest world. All you need to do is redeem your Early Access code found in this email and pay FunCom $5 to begin playing. See official comments from Eidos below. From Eidos: Go to http://register.ageofconan.com and enter your key. You may begin downloading the game client software and installing as early as May 14. Then you may create a character and begin playing on May 17, 3 days before commercial release on May 20, 2008. Your character and all his/her progress will be preserved into commercial release. Note: There is a nominal fee of $5 that covers the cost of the download and includes 10 days of additional game time. Some restrictions apply, see registration page for details.
EARLY ACCESS CODE: xxxxxxxxxx
If you have any questions regarding activation or how to sign up for the Age of Conan Pre-Order Early Access Program I highly recommend visiting the official Age of Conan internet forum http://forums.ageofconan.com/ or official website www.ageofconan.com for more information.
Thank you very much for shopping with GoGamer.com and we appreciate your sticking by GoGamer during this most interesting MMO launch. We hope you enjoy Age of Conan!

Hello Everyone,
Just a quick official word from GoGamer.com.
First, we had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA that FunCom had a limited number of Early Access spaces available. Please believe me when I say this comes as a COMPLETE SURPRISE to us and we apologize to every one of our customers that has not yet registered for the Early Access program simply because they were waiting for the 14th or the 17th to arrive. Had we known that space was limited we would have notified our customers and posted it on our website immediately. Matter of fact, when we asked for more keys Eidos gladly sent us more keys. Had space been limited my guess is they would not have given us more keys nor would I have asked for more! My hope is they will turn the early access back on so all of our Pre-Order customers will have the opportunity to play early.
I personally just found out about this this morning when customers began emailing me. So, I apologize for any confusion on our end and again this is a complete surprise to me and my guess is all the retailers.
As a courtesy, regardless of what Eidos does now, we will continue to send out what Early Access keys we have left to our pre-order cusotmers with the hope they will open EA back up. Also, it appears that at least some of our keys will give the Rhino when entered. I cannot say this for sure, but I will continue to send out the keys just in case it will give you the Rhino.
Again, we apologize for any confusion and dissappointment this new development causes out customer, but please be aware this is news to us and it is a dissappointment to GoGamer.com. We wish would have been properly informed.

I purchased the early access, and I was also allowed to receive the client download early. If you have been approved to play as early as May 17th, when you log in for registration *note* this is also the same place that shows your subscription, it will say that you have been part of the select few to join in the game before the masses arrive. The gates of Hyboria will open for you on May 17th! Unless you have that statement on the official Funcome website where you register, then you do not have early access. This is one good reason I never buy pre-ordered products from not well known Companies that have not been around as long. Purchased mine from Gamestop online with no problems.
..Brichter, is that you?? What's the matter, didn't get enough attention for you little temper tantrum on the beta forums, had to come over here and cry too??
I read that some stat that it is informed that early access is limited. The store I got the game from. Told me that Funcom never informed them about that. If they had done that they would have informed their customers that they needed to use the key the moment they got it.
As it stand they only inform their customers that the key give early access and you will be abel to download the game 6 days early. Today Funcom informed them that it was a limited amount of keys. So they have sent out a mail to the ones they have mail adress to and informed them about it.
This is not a big store like some other. So they have no real power to do anything about it. And they were mad when I spoke to them. Becaus it was they who look bad tho their customers and not Funcom.
Did the OP actually get charged the $5 for early access? No. So what is the problem? You still get your game, your in game items,,, what is the big deal?
Yes, Funcom has been flat out lying to customers. They have said in their newsletter #15 that every one who preorders gets early access. They have also conirmed this in a press release: www.funcom.com/wsp/funcom/frontend.cgi
Nice marketing scam to sell more preorders. Funcom is a screwy company. And the fanbois are as usually supporting this, of course they are happy with their keys.
I'm glad someone produced something solid on this matter. I was on the fence with this issue until JUST now. This is just downright shady, and indicative of something being amiss in-so-far as their server stability is concerned once the masses hit the scene.

Yup. Let the lemmings all dive off their cliff into the pile of crap that has been shoveled by the Funcom marketing team. I can't wait for all the fireworks that will continue to go off throughout this weekend and next week. PR can only go so far to cover up their shoddy business practices. GO GO supporters of companies that can't even honor their claims about pre-order benefits. Spin some more fanbois!

Here is a thread on the official forums with a lot of information on this scam:
Reading that thread made me sick. "Its just a game?" No, its not...its viral and its a scam. I'm POSITIVE many people bought the pre-order for the early access. Especially if the retailers were "suggestive selling" them with it...as ANY retailer would do. There is NO reason Funcom cannot allow every pre-order to get access...there is NO reason to hardcap it at all. NONE. If they didn't realize the turn-out would be so high...then they should have done the right thing and adjusted the early access to compensate.
The way these "successful" AoC players speak on that forum make me sick enough that I wouldn't bother with this game even if I LOVED everything about it. This community is trash, by and far, above anything I have ever seen in my life.

What ever do you mean? AoC is an M rated game with gore and boobs!!! There is no way that it will have anything but a mature community... I think the fanbois are right and all the haters need to leave their instanced load screen chat room alone so they can enjoy all the boobies and guts while they sip their mountain dew and eat cheetos!

Please and I mean please, do not post links unless you have fully read what the link shows, if you read the linked document you will see this made by Funcom:
" The early access program is only available with certain retailers. A participant list can be found on the official Age of Conan websites. The early access is entirely voluntary, and opens up on the 17th of May for Oceanic and North American gamers, and on the 20th of May for European gamers. Pre-loading of the client will commence in advance. You need to pay a nominal 5 USD / EUR fee to take advantage of the offer, which includes client download and 10 days of subscription. When the early access offer expires you must enter the physical retail box gamekey to continue playing."
"within certain retailers"
please read carefully before you just start posting. Just because you bought your games in smaller companies that does not give you the rights to come on here and bash the companies.

Yea it says certain retailers, but nowhere does it say limited to so many keys. That is the issue not where you preorder it from but the fact that they have told retailers two days ago that early access was a benefit and then flip 180 on them. People who have preordered the game for various retailers who were told by Eidos that they would get early access are not. Regardless if Eidos or FC got it wrong...they got it wrong and now they try and spin doctor it up and peeps like you are just letting them know that they can get away with this kind of practice. Bait and switch man, bait and switch.

No, you did not understand. Of course we know that only certain retailers are offering the preorders.
We HAVE purchased from retailers who offered preorders.

We had to set that limit to allow the tens of thousands of registered players to download the client and get access to the game on the 17th of May.
