You can't really get that with solo questing.

This is how i feel. I actually haven t bought a game in a long time that in the first few days i don t feel like logging into anymore. I just can t put a finger on it except i don t like it. I have got to 28 on a Ranger and yes i will agree it was way to fast, but the most tedious quests i ve seen in a long time. I love stories in games but i found myself quickly clicking passed the npc yapping away because it just became too much. Oh well cancelling isn t a hard thing to do and won t cost me anymore money at least. Thank god theres alot of decent looking MMOs coming out soon.

    Level 7 ??

Judging an mmo after less than 30 minutes game time?  Are you serious?  Level 7 is reached just after the first few minor quests in daytime Tortage.   Grinding?  What grinding?

I agree with a few of the replies... and must add that IMHO anyone making a judgment call on any mmo after that brief a time must not have accumulated much mmo experience.  Any veteran mmo'r would notice that there is almost no grinding involved in early AoC, certainly not up to 7.  That can be quickly reached after a few minor sidestory quests.

Sorry, not buying that, makes no sense.  OP, perhaps you need to re-evaluate your gaming habits and desires... maybe mmo's are just not your cup o' tea.

well in aoc solo quest up to level 41 easy in 3 days.

For me, I can stand the 1-20 solo questing, my only question is, how long does it take to get to 20? Is it an epic grind itself?

Hard to believe how many people feel grinding for the sake of grinding levels is fun.

"Throw me in a zone with like-level mobs and I'll do the rest..."

I'd rather poke my eyes out.

But... some of you obviously feel very strongly about being able to grind. I don't understand why you can't grind to your heart's content in AoC.

I say, if grinding is that important to you, why do you even bother with quests? Skip them!!!!! Just go out and kill stuff. Whining about "too many quests" is just dumb (no offence intended).

Just because there are NPC quests available, that does NOT mean you have to take them. No one is putting a gun to your head forcing to you to take all these 'laundry list' quests. Why would you do this if you don't like doing it? That makes absolutely no sense.

Are you upset that other people have the option of doing quests? You try to get guildmates to grind with you, and they say no cause they're doing quests? Are you upset other people level faster by questing than you are by grinding? Is that it?

Give your head a shake. Taking out 75% of the quests is not the answer. Just don't do them. That would be logical, no?

I believe that pencilrick was looking for a sandbox, quest-less and story-less MMO. Unfortunately AoC is very story driven. The Tortage area is more focused on introducing people to the world, thus the story is even more packed than what people will experience in the later game. The game was clearly something pencilrick would not enjoy, so being unhappy is understandable. Some research on the matter would have indicated that this is not a game designed for his needs.

Funny you say that, because I rolled a new toon and tried just that.  You know the girl who is bound by her wrists in the center of the jungle path?

Well, I tried to ignore her and run past.  (Not noble behavior, I admit, but should have been possible).  Instead, I was artificially blocked from proceeding down the path, BECAUSE............................................

    <drum roll please>

Because the designers forced the gameplay in that scenario.  I had to follow the direction the designers had mapped out.  I was "forced" to click through the quest text dialogue and kill some guy to get a key to unlock her or faced with not being able to proceed in the game.

Now, I suppose I could have stayed on the beach forever, grinding experience and never leaving that small sliver of shoreline.  (Big fish in a little pond?).  But the main point is I was limited artificially, and that is frustrating for some players.

This is really what I'm talking about.

I agree it s story driven. Yet i love stories in games. One game that had the coolest story to me anyways was FFXI. Leveling in it was painful but i always had a goal to achieve so i would feel a huge sense of accomplishment when i achievedit. Then the story just kept getting better so i would want to keep going. I find AOC s story so unappealing i just don t know what else to say. I hope people enjoy it but all but 1 of my guild from EQ2 some friends in FFXI said they will not go past free month and return to their previous games. Oh well hope you all have fun, we lljust wait out the next batch of games.

Ok Pencilrick, do me a favour. Go to wherever it is, and select the option to go to daylight (the mmo part). Then when youve played that for a while, come back and tell us if its still linear, still guildwars-ish (cant explore too much).

    May I suggest Oblivion?

Oh, I researched it, and it is my fault for buying the game.  I have to take ownership for that.

You see, since about 2003, there hasn't been a game that satisfies me like EQ or DAOC or a couple of other early MMORPG's.  The design format has changed significantly.

Being a MMORPG addict, I bought the game anyway, just like I probably will buy WAR and any other big title coming down the pike.  I deluded myself into thinking AOC would be the game.  I mean the class system is so well designed, and with the world of Hyperboria, the adventuring seemed endless.

Let me see, I cannot run past the chained girl without freeing her first.  (Cannot physically do so; the game won't let me.),  Yet I have the powers to control day and night.

That's backwards, is it not?  I should be able to ignore the girl and any quests I choose, but I am no god and should not be able to manipulate day and night.

Good reply.  AoC, you can opt to grind to your heart's content, or quest, and further opt to night-solo, or day-multiplayer.  Not sure what more options could be provided to make the OP happy.

The quests are linear, but they are immersive and important parts of the storyline.  They're not mindless nor meaningless, and they are intended to train newbies as well as deep story-immersion.

I'm still shaking my head tho, unbelievingly, at the OP.    Level  7  is barely out of the initial start zone...  the start will take you to 6+.   Level 7 is quickly reached before you even finish the quest to enter the city.  All within 30 minutes or less of starting a character.  That simply is not a fraction of the time needed to evaluate an mmo, especially one as deep as this one.

Some ppl are just difficult to please, I guess.

Ok, yes. I concede there are three mandatory quests to get to Tortage. Get the prostitute's key, kill the slaver and get another key, then break your slave chains.

After that? Within 10-15 minutes you're level 5... maybe 6 if you were able to grind a bit... and Hyboria is pretty much yours to discover.

*sigh* Why are you here still? Really, if you hate the game this much? I mean if I dislike a game as much as you seem to, I dont stick around just to troll. I did with L2 until my sub ran out, then I was gone, and I wasnt really trolling, just replying to stuff...

So you hate the game, think its a stick in the mud, cant let a girl die in the forest... cant see the forest for the trees...

I"m just talking on the forum like everyone else.  Some stuff is positive (I'v'e noted good things about the graphics and class design in other posts) and some not so positive like the quest grinding.  But I think my responses and comments are appropriate to this game.

Now my question (and I mean this in a friendly manner) is why aren't those who enjoy the game on opening launch day in the game?  These forums are mostly haunted by those of us waiting or wanting new games.  Folks in games they like have more enjoyable uses of their time.

My only, only, only issue with this game is Tortaga and the quest stuff.  Surely, the devs can tweak that like Sony tweaked EQ2.

Are you kidding me?  That is the very first fight, that is the initial start fight... one fight, 30 seconds to get the key, free her, and you're on your way.  That is to teach the fundamental combat interface... one fight.  And that's got you all worked up because you can't go around her???

I remember EQ and DAoC well.  There were many quests you were forced to do in order to advance yourself in some fashion.   And one little training fight has got your rope in a knot.

Pencilrick... you do understand you're evaluating a whole game from a starting zone, and the first 30 minutes of a starting zone to boot.

No where in my post did I tell him to go away. Nor was I implying it either. As he just said in the post after yours, hes here to reply to stuff... so am I. I was just wondering why hes wasting his time? Why not go and do something productive? Why Im not doing anything productive, its 2am in the morning, I worked eight hours. Im tired.

Also: I dont have the game yet. Have to wait til friday to buy it.

I'm up because I"m an insomnic MMORPG addict who has been waiting 5 years for a decent new game.

But most or all of my recent posts are really responses to direct questions.

When I find that new game (or a way to get to sleep before 1 A.M.), I'll depart the forums for good.

Get past Tortage, which takes all of 5 HOURS and thats if youre slightly mentally challenged.  Once past Tortage, there are no limitations on which zones you can go and explore in aside from some instances which require you to be on a certain quest to enter. Go grind endlessly on wolves in the Valley or try your beloved "exploring" further east on the map past the town and get destroyed most likely.

You dont have to solo grind, in fact, most of the solo quests are better grouped up and done in a duo since many camps will have 3-4 mob pulls which can be tough for most soloers. In the mid 20s you start to see true Group Quests too, which you must have a solid group for. If you are really gonna throw a fit about the first 20 levels, go elsewhere, we dont want you.
