I've played Ragnarok Online, i know what grinding is and i don't think any game can compete with how horrible grinding is on that game. so i can live with having to be patient on higher level content which they've already stated they're implementing along with letting us know they know of what major issues there are that they are working on.
See to me thats unacceptable thats a large portion of the games quests are just not in the game and need to be patched in.
Someone posted this earlier about how people give MMO's this extra room to have issues then other games, and really the only reason is cause its allowed. AOC is showing that, with the amount of glitches and issues and content that is just missing that is advertised on the box.
Even if the game gets its act together, the reason of why it wont do as well or fail is all just right there.
maybe someone will give me their beta access when they leave =p
Both games will have their people, hopefully both will be successful. I'm holding out for WAR now, I did not like AoC as I hoped I would. If it does not do it for me, then I guess I'll be waiting on Stargate or Hero's Journey next, but I think it will.
NO! WAR won't be better than AoC! Everybody knows the upcoming patch for AoC is going to fix all of the problems people are having with it! A DEV even said so! The only reason it launched with the problems it did was because they were out of money! They needed another 500 dollars that they did not have so they HAD to launch and not hold off two weeks to put in these miracle patches. You will all see! AoC will be better than WAR, and WoW, and even Hello Kitty Online! What a stupid question!
Hehe, the "magic patch" that everyone waits for right after a MMO releases? If I had a dollar for every time I heard someone believing in that, I'd truly be wealthy.
I've worked on more than one MMO in the past, the most recent being a volunteer GM/quest writer/moderator for DnL. I'm pretty certain everyone remembers what happened to them at launch, and most of the userbase had been duped into believing in this magical patch that was coming. Well it never came, and eventually even the volunteer staff like myself had to jump ship due to hostile players. Most of us who had a clue and know how MMO development goes could see the writing on the wall long before the players could, but it was good industry experience. The actual devs simply didn't have a clue and borked it for everyone.
AoC devs needed a whole $500 to finish the patches huh? I bet one programmer makes that in under a week, and a MMO team in less than an hour. Either you're being extremely sarcastic, or phenominally obtuse. Either way, thanks for the great chuckle!

Ooohh right, the "miracle patch", how could we forget!
I mean, come on, Vanguard's miracle patch was promised too!
Whether or not there will be a miracle patch, it remains a fact that there is only one chance for a first impression. Unfortunately, Funcom's first impression was not all that positive.
At least to me, Funcom's tactics seems very shady up to this point. Many of the things that they advertised are yet to be in the game now. These include DX10 support, a sensible PVP system, content in the higher levels, etc. While these issues do not make AoC a bad game (in fact, it remains one of the more decent MMORPG for me), it does strip Funcom of their credibility.
As such, I now take what Funcom says and what they do separately. Although they have listed thing they promise to deliver, it still remains whether they will do it ever or whether they will do it in a timely manner.
With WAR and Mythic, they have a much better track record. Heck, Mythic announcing that they will be delaying WAR prior to releasing the CEs for sale is almost a completely opposite to Funcom not informing potential buyers of missing features. For example, unless you've been following AoC's launch, someone looking for a new game would NOT know that DX10 support (one of the game touted features) is not yet implemented.

Please tell me you're joking...
But back on topic, I agree with a few of the previous posters. I want them both to do well, and both attract a solid base.
BUT.
Even in beta now, WAR is more polished than AoC was in beta 4-5 months ago. WAR, at this time, is really just polishing, whereas AoC was still solidifying/removing content 4-5 months ago.
I think that the wealth of broken promises to the community, and lack of end-game content will cripple AoC. Most people are rapidly become disillusioned with the game, which (honestly) is a shame; because it is - or could be - a good game.
In the long run WAR, IMHO, will prove to be the more successful and enjoyable game.
Uhm, yes. I was most definitely joking. The influx of posters/fanbois who place the whole of their argument in defense of the game around promises and miracle patches makes me chuckle. I apologize for not turning on my sarcasm flag before posting. I sometimes take for granted that dripping sarcasm can be easily missed by some. I find this entire discussion rather silly, as most of the arguments about AoC vs WAR, or AoC in general. Cheers to you all though. If nothing else, you provide me temporary comic relief in my work days.
Haha First, if I wanted an opinion, this is the last place I would ask for one. But, since you are asking, I'll tell you that I've heard WAR still has a looong way to go before it gets to the game Mythic Devs have promised. Btw, am I the only one who thinks the WAR devs are annoying as hell? With all there stupid, wannabe-comedy, hype-attempting, videos. I seriously would love to see an EA Exec come into one of these videos, slap the shit out these guys, and tell them to stop wasting time and money trying to be something you're not, and get to work on the fucking game.
Anyway, AoC has had a successful launch. Not bug-free and far from perfect, but still successful for a game in this genre. I play AoC and I do think it's a good game with great potential. Don't believe every negative thing you hear about it on this site. Most of the people who like it are spending less time discussing/bitching on forums and more time playing the game so you may miss the opinions of the larger crowd of players that like the game.
That being said, I hope WAR is everything they promise it will be. This game looks like could be really good, but I've also heard that it is currently flawed to a point that they can't release it without avoiding a disastrous launch (likely the reason it's been pushed back so much). Ultimately though, only time will tell. No one can tell what it will really be like because it simply hasn't been released.
unbroken, WAR beta is already rock solid .. of course..it's not perfect but in much better form than AoC at release .. just don't trust to your sources.
Originally posted by MightyJudge I went into AoC with a very open mind, I have to say I honestly did not lean 1 way or the other between AoC and WAR. However after playing AoC I must say it was a complete waste of money. There was not too much wrong with the content, a bit lacking in areas, seems like they spent half their budget on the frist 20 levels and the other half on the other 60. The graphics are the best an MMO has seen. The biggest failing of AoC was the customer service and the bugs. The amount of people writing petitions and getting deleted is amazing, people waiting 15 hours with no response. The tech forums have absolutely no customer support, half the issues are solved by the community, the other half have threads almost 1000+ posts long and no fix or response from Funcom. They have been updating often and each update is lucky to have 1 very minor bug fix. If WAR releases a fairly polished game without any major game breaking bugs that makes the game totally unplayable then WAR will be laughing all the way to the bank, they will see double the release AoC has seen.
I do not think that I have ever agreed with another post more then with yours MightyJudge. Bravo!
I am sure that AoC will be a good game down the road, once adequate content and optimization has been added, especially once the xbox version hits the shelves. As for someone that has been following the game, reading forums watching and reading Funcon's presentations (yes that was an intentional typo), I am left with a bad taste in my mouth.
I can only hope that WAR is better at release, but even if they launch with half of the content they currently seem to have they will surpass AoC's success with ease.
No one really knows at this point....but we can give fair guesses. Considering how FUN it was playing DAOC, and by fun I mean the RvR (in fact it was so fun I never actually got my character to 50 I stayed in BG's far waaaay too long haha). Since WAR is based off the DAOC formula, I expect for WAR to appeal to many more gamers.
AoC in its own right looks like a nice game, especially if Funcom delivers on all theyre content promises; however, AoC appeals to a little more hardcore guild based gaming, and it may appear as if AoC may either turn into a niche game with a rather small following of dedicated players like EQII, CoH, FFXI, L2, etc; it has a bit more potential considering that it will be coming on to console; yet it will never really have the raw mass appeal power that WAR will have. WAR has that "everyone should play" WoW feel to it that AoC simply lacks.
Simply put once WAR comes out we will see what happens. There is going to be a huge tug of war once WAR hits the shelves, trust me on that. Alot of people know about WAR, and Mythic isnt even advertising all that much. Simply put, I have full faith in Mythic in pull out a great game....I played DAOC before, its a great game, Mythic is a nice company, and they have the moneybag (EA) backing them. If there is one game I would pre-order the collectors edition, its this one.
Thats also why Ive been spending my time on the AoC forums, because I wasnt too sure of AoC. AoC was, and still is, quite foggy on if it can deliver. As much as Id like to buy it, Id rather just wait for WAR.
btw, is this EAs first MMO? i know the reputation of EA being a slave driver to push out games as fast as it can... but could it possible that they really are giving mythic the time and freedom to accomplish what they want?
It has to be noted that EA isnt about pushing out games like a slave driver, rather they do what they have to do to make the most profit. For most of the games EA puts out quality isnt important, they are still selling games.
In the case of an MMO they understand that the profit is in long term quality (Look at WoW), so they are probably going to do their damndest to make this the most addicting MMO ever. Because theyre hardcore capitalists.
Honestly I have played AoC as a Necromancer and some of the animations they made even for a low level Necro are just really cool. I got excited about them more than I ever have a game.. but It's hard to compare a game that has been released to a game that hasn't but in my opinion AoC stands strong and this is the WAR forums so Idk man. It's tough. I'm rooting for WAR tho .
The makers of WAR have an easy task. Doing better than Conan.... everyone did better in the last 3 years. Just scrap the first 20 levels and the ridicolously graphics that weigh on every system. And what do you get: a complete broken game system.
Not that anyone believed the BS you been spouting anyway but you just lost any semblance of honesty or sanity in your above statement that EVRYBODY did better in the last 3 years. There are many like VG that did alot worse. At one point I thought you might not simply be a troll, but the lies, you been spewing show what you are and what your OPINIONS are realy worth.
See you in about 4 months when you spew more of the same BS about WAR because it let you down.
As long as WAR is not overly linear like AOC, it should be fine. I don't need a game telling me I have to talk to such-and-such NPC in a certain way if I'm to leave the magic tutorial room. Blah.
But Mythic did great things with DAOC and if they apply the same principles to WAR, it should be an awesome game.
And why I'm not too much into PVP, I much prefer a PVP Realm-vs-Realm endgme to PVE raiding.
Like I said, Mythic got it right in DAOC. Let's hope for WAR.
AoC feels like a console game to me...its very ,very solo friendly, very linear, .....maybe the siege warfare will be more fun...but frankly I dont even think I can stand it that long.....I am so bored now I am posting/reading here instead of playing...........I will try war and hope its fun for me

Same experience, although I saw the writing on the day Day 1. Actually, I saw it before I bought the game, but wanted a new MMORPG so bad, I clouded my own judgement.
Now, if AOC had been more open, less linear, less questy, but just plopped new barbarians into some cruel snowy northern village, it could have been very, very cool.
They could have made it tough so that maybe it'd take being practically level 20 to survive the overland journey to a major city, instead of some artificial exiting of the tutorial.
Someday there will be a cool "World of Hyperborea", I'm hoping and guessing.
But WAR, if it's all it promises, ought to take care of us until then.

I can't imagine at this stage how WAR could do worst than AOC. It seems that AoC has pretty much Vanguarded itself at this point.

As long as WAR doesn't have the spastic combat system of AoC I'll be happy.
1. Combos are a PAIN IN THE ASS.
2. Standing still to use melee abilties... I'll flip out if they do this in WAR.
O_o o_O
will WAR be better than AOC
Yes any mmo has 99% potential to be better then aoc..except the graphics..they are cool...

Short answer YES - WAR will be better than AOC.
Better at release than AoC was ,and better than AoC at the time of WARs release.
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.

Lets not fool anyone here.
WAR's launch will be just as bumpy as any other.
Question is, will it have massive amount of fanboi's to support it untill it is the great game it can be.
So the real question is......
How long will you sub to WAR untill they can make this game as good as promised:?
All I'm allowed to say is this, you will NOT be disappointed.
WAGGGHHHH is coming. Nuff said, but please don't take my word for it, go apply for beta and try to get in yourself. www.warhammeronline.com
