Fantasy is a timeless genre and will always be popular. While I am open to other settings, I see nothign wrong with Orcs and Elves in a fantasy environment. I might be tired of poorly done fantasy MMO's, but I think much of the gamer base is eager for a qualitynew fantasy MMO, because that's an unfilled niche at the moment.
I would not call the fantasy MMO genre and niche :P. However the MMO market as an whole is looking for an quality new MMO, I doubt that poeple would then care if you looked like and elf, human or an robot.
I like the medieval setting, but I cant really take a game seriously with elves, magic and monsters everywhere. I want to be immersed in a trustworthy virtual world. Give me a medieval europe without all the fairy tale stuff. I want to fight with a sword (no, samurai sword don´t belong in medieval europe) and a shield with and against other humans with non fantasy combat superpowers. I don´t want my sword to glow, shoot 10 arrows in one shot with my bow, or a gnome wizard with a helicopter throwing fireballs at me. I don´t see why hollywood keep doing movies with medieval theme, but you cant find one single medieval mmorpg.
For me it's anything with cutesy anime characters......I'm sorry but being older ,I can't get in to games that look like they were made for 8 year olds.

Age is a state of mind. You are playing video games, but cartoons are to childish for you? That is a sign of immaturity IMO.
I personally can appreciate all styles of art. I do love cartoon style drawing more so then art that tries to immiated real life exactly. Perhaps it's because I prefer a world that isn't a mirror of reality exactly in how things look and has more of a fantastical look that couldn't exist in real life.
As for fantasy I love it and hope to make a fantasy game one day. I never grow tired of Elves, Dwarves, Orcs, Goblins, Trolls, etc. Fantasy is the spice of life. It mirrors reality somewhat with the different races which draw on different aspects of human beings. Orcs might represent the brutish dumb human who relies on brute strength. Elves might represent the intelligent, but arrogant humans.
Of course my favorite thing in the fantasy world is magic. Almost anything can be done with magic. Of course games like AoC seem to be restricting magic to that of fireballs and combat type magic. I remember in EQ there was so much you could do with magic. You could teleport to different places in the world or in the planes. You could make yourself invisible. You could levitate yourself. You could cast spells to disguise yourself as another race. These are the kind of ideas I would like to see back in MMOs again in terms of magic.

I meant that a "quality" "new" fantasy MMO is an unfilled niche. In my opinion there are lots of quality MMO's and lots of new MMO's, but not really both. However, Warhammer should change that in three months.
but I think much of the gamer base is eager for a qualitynew fantasy MMO, because that's an unfilled niche at the moment.
Ummm.... what? You actually believe that the "good fantasy MMO' niche isn't filled? Ummm, there's Vanguard for sandbox people. There's Guild Wars for casuals. And then there's WoW.
Right now there exists one truly decent non-fantasy MMO and that's EVE. EVE's problem is the lack of ground based anything, it's completely shit combat system, and it's inane skill earning method. I can overlook the skill earning, and even grit my teeth through shitty combat systems, but I can't "get into" a game that just has me piloting (and fake ass waypoint to waypoint piloting at that) about and never able to like... walk around on dirt and stuff.
So literally the "unfilled niche" you're referring to is A) not a niche; and the most filled segment of the MMO market today.

The point was "quality".
Vanguard, Guild Wars, and WoW?
Suck, completely instanced, and uber suck don't equal quality.
I love fantasy, but I am tired of the LOTR copy cats also. I'm really looking forward to see what CCP does with the World of Darkness IP. I played that pen and paper game back in the mid 90's and hope the MMO is done right. I'd also like to see a necroscope MMO.
I was wondering how many feel the way I do and are sick and tired of seeing more fantasy based mmo's in development. Why can't devs develope other game styles like maybe ,Old West,A space mmo thats not Star Wars or Star Trek? They made a console game Mass Effect and its a damn good game with decent lore to boot. I think Game developers need to start being a little more creative the Orcs n Elves are being driven into the ground.
Yea I am sick of Elves and Orcs and I am a fantasy fan. I prefer AoC because its more realistic in style and character. I would play another Fantasy MMO with O&E's if they had combat which let me slice them up. I am probably going to play WAR but i will avoid both classes because I always play a bloody High Elf.
Going for a stumpy dwarf this time. Still prefer Sci-Fi

I said "quality" and "new". Not "quailty" (which there are some) or "new" (which there are some, too).
A "quality" "new" MMO is, in my opinion (and I'm certainly not alone in this) IS an unfilled niche at the moment. There are still some great games out there, but they're getting on in years.
While there are some that are sick of the orc and elf thing, there are alot that are still into it. And most of the fantisy stuff that games are based off of are still the elf and orc stuff too.
I have seen a pre alpha site for a zombie mmo though. cant remember the name right now but when i do ill post it.
I didn't read all the replies but there are some non-fantasy mmo's coming out that look very interesting so far. Jumpgate Evolution is a space game and Fallen Earth is a post-apocalypse game. Both have some unique features and new ideas. I'm looking forward to both of them because I also am ready for a change from the standard fantasy fare.
Still plan on enjoying Vanguard tho. It has turned out to be a great game.
I'd like to see something along the lines of Motor City Online.....not a full fledged "MMO"....but still entertaining, addictive, and most of the community was middle aged gearheads like myself.

You hit the nail on the head right there with that statement. The whole fantasy thing is pretty much text book. The races, the classes, the weapons ..... etc. It requires very little thought to make a fantasy oriented anything ...... the bulk of it is already done for you. That is one reason why we see so many of them .
I also read an article somewhere that basically stated the general population prefers fantasy over other types. Reason being it is something that they are already familiar with. Everyone knows a dwarf warrior swings a melee weapon best, everyone knows an elven rangers best weapon is the bow ..... that kind of basic understanding enables people to just jump into a game without researching races and classes and be effective.
Personally, I kinda like researching and mixing things up a bit, don't care for the dumbing down we see at every release. Yes I am sick of the whole fantasy thing. I'd take a laser rifle over a sword any day. Rather jump in my space ship than on a horse. Orcs and Elves ...... bleh. Gimme a Sci Fi sandbox with a substantial amount of depth to play in and I'd be there for years.......

amen brother...amen.
Being a fan of the fantasy genre, I must say I'm fed up with companies repeating the same formula, trying to reproduce WoW success.
So, I'm sick of orcs and elves style mmogs.
