Are u still playing AoC?

Max_StrikerMax_Striker Member UncommonPosts: 263

I was just wondering ho many ppl have actualy quit and how many are still playing AoC. We know it sold about a million copies but looks like the game was a major disappointment. So i was wondering how many ppl have already quit.

I am still playings and even i like the game in general it is true that it has many problems. It has potential, stunning graphics and sound, best out there by far So is the character customization, maybe the best ive seen. Combat system is ok, not as slow as most fantasy MMOs. Animations are very nice, i like them a lot, fatality is a must. The blood is nice too, the character motion, jogging, runing, on the horse, all very natural.

So the game has great aspects but in the other hand it has a lot of bugs. It lacks high end content badly and midle end as well. It is way too much instanced i really dislike instances. And it has instances for verything, very imersion breaking imo. The story is too linear since the begining, no options to grind with diferent characters. Might get very boring if wanna build few toons. And it gets even worse at higher lvls. Loot sux! No otions for clothing and they are ugly. Crafted items are poor and crafting is still bugged. It lacks player housing. Traveling is a pain like most MMOs, some ppl dont agree but i dont like to spend most of my time traveling to get to objectives. Groups are too small, only 6,  but thats only my opinion i like big groups.

My conclusion after less than 2 months playing is that the game is fun but it is also very incomplete. It can be good but it will depend on a lot of work and know how, lets see if Funcon can handle it. I love the graphics and sound and i like the combat so im gonna stick for a while waiting inprovements, fingerscrossed :p

The population seems to be doing well.  I thought I read that the game retained about 500k subs though at the beginning of this month.. which is a little shocking. I canceled about a month ago, but I still have friends on different servers and in large guilds saying the game is still well populated.

Waiting for Fallen Earth, World of Darkness, Old Republic, FFXIV

500,000 players created an account in their billing system is what it said in parenthesis.  Earlier they announced 700k players created accounts but my guess is that included beta test accounts since beta testers all had to create an account.

My guess is they are down to 300K-350K players or so, which is still a very healthy number as long as it doesn't keep dropping like it has been.

I'm still playing, but I have a question for you:

If a game isn't instanced isn't it  true the gameworlds needs to be allot bigger so that not everyone is cramped up in on spot which created longer travel times so my question is how do you picture yourself a game that isn't instanced and doesn't have lots of travel time?

I feel the whole reason that these games are becoming more and more instance'd is pure because so many people dislike travel times so developers try to make as much content close together, which can't be done if it's a seemless world cause like I said we would get to many people on one spot so the gameworld has to be bigger to eleminate people camping or going after the same thing, thus creating longer travel times.

Another thing I find rather strange is that many complain about Hybroria feeling rather small, though people like OP seem to find it pretty big due to his complaint about travel times. And yet many keep wondering why these games change as much as we keep seeing.

  • Ender4Ender4 Member UncommonPosts: 2,247

They instance for a few reasons.

    1.  easier to make the game more stable when fewer players are in the same spot

    2. Don't have to create as much content to make players happy.

    3. This generation of mmorpg players dont' like competition so this lets them avoid it, even though it makes the games extremely easy and boring.

    4. Allows them to do more with scripted content etc

I don't think travel has a lot to do wtih it other than how it ties into #2. You can make a smaller world thus you have less of it to travel in.

There are things called teleports and flight path.

Making the world smaller to reduce travel time is a bad excuse.

Esp in AoC, I have the highest attended travel time in AoC and their world is tiny, the way the world connect is in sequence, which means I have to travel through every zone before the next before I can get to my destination. From the main city to Atzel, I have to pointlessly travel through 3 zone before I can reach my destination which could take around 30mins. If suddenly I found a party in khemi region, it means I have to spent all this time port back and travel all over again, Which could take twice as long if my port back was on cooldown.

Making the world smaller to reduce travel time is not a good excuse, there are many ways to reduce travel time, having a small world isn't one of them.

  • ReSublimityReSublimity Member Posts: 40

To add to my last statement, I do find one advantage of small worlds - and that is world pvp, players dont have many place to hide or level up, because the world is so small, which gives more chances of pvp combat.

Whether players will find that as a advantage depends on the player.

AoC is a festering cancerous tumor on the MMO industry.

You could try reading before you reply. OP never said he wasn't playing , bit creepy though to see people checking up on others they don't even know (atleast I asume you don't know eachother)

You did say teleports and flight paths" which afcourse is nice for a short term solution and can hide the lack of worldcontent. So thats half a asnwer  cause I wonder have you looked at the conseqence or the effect it could make long term?

So far we have a lot more ppl that have quit than ppl still playing, like 2/1. I have imagined since i heard a lot of ppl complaining and almost nobody happy with the game.

I think we could have some instances for diferent regions but i think there are too many. And most caves, castles or whatever are instanced too and u can never meet other ppl in those dungeons. Its not terrible but i cant say i like it. SWG was great on thas aspect, u had instances for planets but on the planets u had mostly an open map where u could meet a lot of ppl doind their things while u were on a mission or exploring or hunting. Even inside buildings or caves or dungeons.

Second about traveling. It just need a more complex travel system so u dont have to cross 2 or 3 entire maps to get to some place. Again i can give old SWG as an example, some times u had to travel a lot too but most of the time u could shuttle to some place close by where u want and just drive a bit. You could always choose between drive an shuttle if on the same planet, that was a great system.

But traveling is a problem in most MMOs, not really a problem but a matter and some deal better with it than others.

Yes it seems. it's common knowledge that all servers were bumped up to 'medium' pop some time ago, plus they disable the search function.  I just feel sad when I log on and see less people everytime

Anyways, I realize Funcom will likely never admit that they have low pop servers and serve merge will come... eventually. But almost all post about people about  server merge are closed ASAP on the official forums.

I am still playing and plan to stay for quite a while, may quit when WAR is released(but will wait a few months after war comes out to see the response). ATM I am very much enjoying myself, and today's update actually had some good fixes/additions for the first time.

How is looking at an xfire signature "checking up on him?"

OP -That's an insane amount of time spent playing a game, I believe that xfire resets on Sundays ( could be wrong though, I never used it.) So even then that would be 15+ hours a day lol. At that rate you will be done with AoC in about 1 more week and then  will be on here saying there isn't anything to do.

Agree somewhat with 3 and 4 (I think there is more nuance to the problems) and the travel bit. Travel can always be solved in a large world, loads of ways to do that.

At pt.2 Don't see that you have to make less content in an instanced world. That would depend on the sum size of the instances compared to the size of the seamless world. You will need a certain amount of stuff to do while leveling, and then at endgame, to keep most people happy regardless of technology. That is all about matching content amounts to leveling pace, end game strategy etc.

At pt.1. This is a development in all games. You just can't squeeze many objects on to the screen of an average rig and expect it to run smoothly with the highest end gfx. Compare the density of mobs in an old shoot em up compared to a new one, drasticly reduced. Compare density of mobs/objects in an old RPG to a new one etc. This is complex stuff that sometimes wont be solved in just one generation of gfx cards.

The shift from sprites to "real" 3D saw the same problems. The shift we see now towards extreeme texture resolutions/layers, dynamics and poly counts will suffer teething problems as well. And more important than gfx cards is the time it takes devs to learn all the new tricks to optimize their engines for all the new stuff.

And yes, I still play, and still enjoy the game - no major problems so far for me (I had loads more problems the first three months in WoW). As a "veteran" MMOer I've come to expect troubled launches (yes, it shoudn't have to be that way, but thats how it is, not a perfect world eh?) and just level slowly, on multiple chars, chose "unbroken" classes etc. while the game matures. That is my strategy, waiting a few months before trying is another.

I will make my final judgement later when the storm dies down and I can see what the game becomes.

I'm still playing AoC but I always do the "unsubscrive every month thing so I don't accidently pay if they break the game" thing. :P

I enjoy the game play but am concerned about the game's direction.  Perhaps even lack of direction.  Time will tell.
