Why i like EVE-Online and impressions of other games out atm

I started the 14 day trial and now im hooked im not leaving ....ever.

I have been trying out other mmo's lately.I even go out and buy the software.(i have a method of returning software that is flawless, works everytime and no harm done).
1st let me say im a mmo veteran from UO.Ill tell you impressions of other games ive tried out 1st.This is just 4 out of god knows how many ive tried. These are impressions not reviews.

1.Anarchyonline.
I played this from launch date for about a year or so back then i LOVED that frikin game was instantly addicted.Well i tried the 7day trial recently and was sorely dissapointed.Nothing has changed for the "solo"player.Well not a lot has changed really.I left AO because the "story"never changed.

2.City of Heroes.
I looked forward to this from the day i heard about it.This is a good game but is not yet where it should be.All the "powers"are cookie cutter and are the same across the board.Too repetitive as well.

3.Lineage2.
GRINDFEST hated it.IMHO it has a great PvP system. All other PvP games should copy it.

4.Shadowbane.
I tried really hard to like this game but its laggy the graphics need some help and it generally left me with a headache.

Now then for Eveonline:
The open ended gameplay is not for everyone there are no quests or "storylines".This is a huge universe(5000 systems the last i heard. It also has a lot of "landmarks"that i intend on seeing.

1.Offline skill training.Best idea EVER for an mmo.I no longer have to kill things to gain new skills.
2.PvP(better be careful where ya go:)
3.The game itself is classless you can learn ANY skill you can afford to buy.
4.Great graphics on a par with anything on the market currently.
5.The game is slow to start but once you begin learning skills the possibilities open up for most any player.

Ive heard other players talking about the harsh penalties but as long as you keep up on your insurance and clones your good to go.Compared to the other games on the market this one is heads above the rest as far as im concerned. With the new expansion coming out soon it will be getting even better.

I hope this helps some others trying to decide if Eve is the game for them or not.See you in space soon!!!

Not for me.  I didn't find Eve-Online to be very funny.

I cant stand Eve Online. I see why it can be appealing to some, but there are many things that are wrong with the game.

First, the game may look nice, but its all just empty space with preety backdrops. I found Earth & Beyond to be much more entertaining graphically with its more congested universe. Second, while the game may not have a leveling grind, it has a money making grind. I much rather be grinding levels than money. Third, PvP is not optional. While this may be great for some, its not for many. I rather have a choice. DAoC gave me a choice, WoW gives me a choice, DnL will give me a choice. In Eve, you can get screwed to high heaven any time any day. Great for those on the winning side, not so for the rest. Finally, no quests and no storyline = in my opinion that makes for a poor mans rpg.

Played: Asheron's Call 1, Dark Age of Camelot, Earth & Beyond, Star Wars Galaxies
Tested: Asheron's Call 1, Asheron's Call 2, Dark Age of Camelot, Eve Online, Lineage 2, Risk Your Life, Saga of Ryzom, World of Warcraft
Uninstalled ASAP: MU Online, Knight Online, Rubies of Eventide, Priston Tales, Star Sonata, DarkSpace

I make a lot of isk from doing agent missions.Making isk is so easy its not even funny.Easy missions.Ridiculously easy missions.PvP is optional btw in that you KNOW the risk if you go into a low security system.

Btw as far as getting screwed as long as you buy insurance for your ship and buy a clone to keep your skills intact everything is fine.(both of wich are VERY affordable)You cant really do a lot in a high security zone to other players as Concord will take care of any trouble right away.Ive not been attacked once yet by another player.

As far as the storyline goes:Were you playing the same game i was?The storyline is updated at least once a week. You need to go back to the website and do some reading friend.

I like not having a linear or forced system that guides you along to an end.I can actually make this game what I want it to be through the skills i acquire.

Hmm sounds like all the things you think are wrong with the game are what i think are right with it.

The feature that i like the best is the offline skill training. As soon as ALL other mmo's begin doing this they will be better games.Any mmo that does not have offline skill training imho is not a "next generation"mmo.Eve is currently the best game out there. While you are grinding out your next level and looking forward to new skills i will be setting mine to train before i go to work. When i come back ill have a new skill that i didnt have to WORK for.

With the next expansion due out very soon this game will only get better.

I started playing EVE from the middle of the Beta, then couldn't find any place to buy it for 2 months, and played it like the world was going to end for 6 months. I stopped playing it about a year ago. It is a very atypical MMORPG for a few reasons.

The game actually offers a very high level of freedom, it can be a strong advantage for some, and a terrible flaw for others. My take of EVE is you have to come up with a plan of what you are going to do, and find people who share your vision. The game itself did not at the time offer much content of its own. I used to refer to it as a splendid empty box, because the game has many excellent tools for you to do whatever you want to do, but doesn't push you one way or the other.

So at the time I played, the content was entirely player made, it was important to actually read the forums to see what pirate corps were going to do, which systems they were claiming or leaving, so you could orient your activities accordingly. Some very strong pirate corps came up, and to counter them some massive capitalist corps appeared. Some of these corps had incredibly good organisation. There was much in the way of rumours, corps politics and diplomacy, events that shaped the future, race for ressources or technology (size of ships), etc... And it was all 100% made by the player community. So even though the game didn't come up with much content of its own, there was a lot of very lively content.

In the 6 months I played I was terribly busy as COO of my corp: organising mining, and deep space mining operations, recruiting and training miners, fighters, scouts, directors, public relations agents, managing industrial production to match our corp needs, opening new outposts, establishing relationships with corps, adapting the structure of our corp to its growth, dealing with human factors, etc...

In the end I was spending so much time and effort I didn't have time to do it all, the corp was big and wealthy, we reached our long term goal to be able to manufacture battleships ourselves and resell them and continued expending. I found the game to be actually competing with my RL job, so I decided it was becoming too much and quit. I had a very good time with EVE.

I don't think it really is possible to have fun in EVE with casual playing, but I haven't really tried. I think EVE is about perfect for its category, but it is a category that is very much outside of the standard MMORPG or computer game altogether, quite a daring game actually.

So I can perfectly understand people would not like this game, or even not understand it or being able to make sense of it.

Eve is an excellent game.  OTOH, it's like all space games ... a bit limited in scope.  There's not a lot of social ... people just tend to do their own thing.  Nevertheless, I find it very enjoyable.  However, I have to wonder how I will feel once I get to the point of mainly needing to train skills that take weeks to train.  The missions are fun but they do get awfully repetitive.

Somebody couldn't solo in AO??  Huh? =)  If there's one game out there where you can practically solo the whole game, that's it.  Grouping is the norml, though, and groups are easy to get.  Also an excellent game.  Massive content.

    *This post is my opinion*

Basically i found the game pretty boring, i think this may be because of the flight system in it.

Point and click really doesn't do it for me, as i was a vetern at Tie-fighter.

I dislike any game which puts "time put in" over "skill of player".

I personally like Vendetta better, It's combat system is more player skill based and alot like tie fighter.

It's way more action orintated image

I do see why some people would like EVE, but like the game X2, i just couldn't get into it

Point and click games are not for me because I don't like the idea of a random number generator.

I am a big fan of space flight/futuristic flight type games as I speak.

Eventhough Vendetta Online might be more action orientated than EVE online, it lacks a couple of things. Like this game feels more like a first person shooter than it is with the true meanings of space flight. Second, it's not a 100% player skilled based while there is auto aiming. Most of the vets seem to turn it off. PvP in this game is quite skill intensive as well because there is no shield systems for each ship. But to me, the ships fly a tad bit slow like if it was descent style game play without being inside a building.

Rumors say the flight engine is going to change soon but I'm not too sure about it.

If you enjoy space games that aren't point and click, and are centered around pvp, then try Darkspace. It's free. www.darkspace.net.sg No mining, skills etc.

i played Eves free trial, and i wasnt too impressed.  What really turned me off was the combat.  It was point and click, it seemed like there was no skill involved and pretty much stats vs stats or i should say equipment vs equipment.  I hate that :p  I didnt expect it to be like a fps, but theres a hell of alot more fun in Freelancer style combat than there is in Eve's sim style.  I also hated the fact that the world felt so dead.  Sometimes it felt like i was the only one playing the game.  I hate to keep bringing up Freelancer, but even single player Freelancer felt so much more alive.

I'm not even into FPS's really(didnt like Halo much, and never got into Halflife, Quake, Doom, etc), but i guess i'm into FPS style space combat games as opposed to more simulation style like Eve is.  That was the main reason i didnt go past the free trial, and waiting for a space game that has Freelancer-style combat with the depth of something like Eve.  I also wasnt too impressed with the graphics btw.

Wow, i didnt read the 2nd page replies before posting, nice to see i'm not the only one that didnt like the combat :)

I tried darkspace back in the old beta days, and it was point and click as well, but at least I enjoyed it.

I usually try my best to not get hooked onto online games or I will lose so much time.

The flight engine did change, momentum is much higher now.

and the auto-aim doesn't have such a high impact on the game, even with it on it doesn't make a hugh difference to the aim.

Eve is a longterm game. Its rewards for the players are not immediate.A huge amount of patience is required to get the rewards at the highend of the game itself.

If you think that you can play this game for just 14 days and are seeing it for what it is your mistaken.Unlike other level based games it reguires a longterm vision/goal.iIt takes at least 14 days for the skills to really open up the game for any player imho.

Ive played many mmo"s and they are all pretty much the same get a level get a skill to bash mobs to get xp to get a level to get a skill to bash mobs etc etc.

    Then there is Eve.

The only game imho to give freedom to its players.Freedom from mob camping.Freedom from questing.Freedom from camping mobs for uber armor.

The players in Eve have the freedom to make the game what they want it to be without ANY linear progression from questing or dungeons.

The level grind in other games with 200 plus levels REQUIRES you actually log in and kill for xp to get that level.

Upper tier skills in Eve take a long time but at least i can train them off line.

When other games let players train skills offline they will finally catchup to Eve.

Darkspace isn't point and click? It never was. You fly with either the classic WASD or arrow keys. The pointing and clicking is for targeting. Which means maneuvering is essential in a fight. The one who can maneuver and avoid the enemy's incoming torpedoes and missiles will probably win. And although torpedoes and missiles have tracking, a fast moving ship can dodge them (meaning the bigger ships aren't always the best :))

Puo. Everything you said can also be said about Lineage II.

    That's why EVE sucks:)

  • PuoltryPuoltry Member Posts: 956

Interesting that you say it sucks considering its one of the highest rated on this site.not to mention the fact they continually have between 10 and 12 thousand players on at the same time.

Some thing must be good about it.

Xira, what are you talking about?  L2 is like, THE GRIND game of all time.  I don't think any other online game has released that can match L2 in sheer boredom factor.  What'd they estimate now for L60, was it 1000 hours, roughly?  Or more than that?  All of it doing the same thing, over and over...?  Sigh.

Eve had some issues when I played it.  In a way, it's still a grind, just a different enough grind that it masks it pretty well.  You can choose how you grind, too: mining, killing pve pirates, running trade routes, doing agent missions.  But all of those are still grinds, in a way.

I would have liked to see more ways for more players to impact their universe.  Ways that every player's actions would help chart the course of the game.  Eve went and put every player on the same shard, and then didn't use that to their advantage as much as they could have.  That's a shame.  Having all players on one shard, they *could* have really made the world change based on player actions a lot more than they did.
