You are not the only one, as I do play female character is because I am not gay. Who would wanna stare at male character butts? are you gay?. Simple as dat.
I heard this many times before and it doesnt make any real sense but sounds more like an excuse. Reason is simple, why would you stare at a males avatars butt when you are playing an MMORPG?
When you go outside do you stare at other guys butts just because they happen to walk infront of you?
Um, if you are male and like to play male characters almost exclusively, that does not mean that you are gay.
For me, I play males because I like to RP what I would do if I (I meaning the person I am) were thrust all of a sudden in to whatever world. I RP me, in other words. Since I am not female, I don't relate to female characters.
In fact, wouldn't you say the males who know how to RP females might be a little gay? I'm joking more or less, but if one is going to go down that road it seems more logical than what kind of pixel butt you want to stare at. I mean, staring any ANY pixel butt might be cause for concern in the first place.
There are notable exceptions in my case. I played a female exclusively in Vampire: The Masquerade because the character animations while moving crouched were positively gay LOOKING unless you played a female.
There are also situations such as Mass Effect where males and females have different story lines to some degree.
Other than that, that's ME standing there in any mmog I play. Not that everyone should be that way.
This isn't an issue of playstyle. Differing playstyles are pvp or pve, raiding or grouping or soloing. This is an issue of scamming. I have no problems with a guy RP'ing a female character. I did, however (if you read my entire first post) state that faking a RL female persona to con the other male gamer into giving him gifts was wrong. This is a con NOT RP'ing. The con is pathetic not the actual RP'ing in game of a female CHARACTER. There is a line between reality and fantasy that is being blurred by the anonymity of the internet the con is hiding behind.
I have been addressing the topic at hand whether you agree with me or not. I have also repeatedly asked you to stop with the personal attacks.
when you mentioned a "girl RP'ing a girl" did you mean a female in RL RP'ing a female character? in that case, I would say that most females characters have not used being female to gain an in-game advantage what-so-ever. A few women do, many, many more don't. The ones that run the con for in-game items or whatever are just as pathetic, in my opinion. Bad behavior is bad behavior.
I have no control over people running scams but I do have control over whether or not I believe that behavior to acceptable or not.

Thats pretty much the same way I look at playing MMOGs too.
anyways the explaination I've heard as to why guys play female Avs is because they would rather stare at a girls butt all day rather than some guy AV's
I might add at this point, with all the talk of the disabled and such. I do not take advantage of anyone I know to be disabled or sick; yeah I like to have my fun but I wont "prey" on those types. There was a guy a few weeks ago that told me the story of his bout with cancer, I actually turned around and gave him some of the proceeds from my unsavory dealings so that I might bring a smile to his face. And I believe my heart grew three sizes that day Also I don't think some of you would feel these people were so helpless if you had seen some of the things they say to me. Its not all fun and games being an chick in mmo, I have heard some sick shit that would make you wonder what the world is coming to
LMAO! You were taken, spanked like the family pig! People use illness just like you use being a female to get free stuff. Well, he is a pretty girl but not to bright.
I do not need to hear "sick sh_t" to wonder what the world is coming to. All I needed was to read your original post.
I think you're generalising there, not everyone who has a disability or illness broadcasts it in an MMO, or on the net, in the hopes they'll get free stuff. People with a genuine disability tend to keep quiet about it unless they've got to know you fairly well first, as the majority don't want to be treated any differently to anyone else. There are people out there that do con people into thinking that they're actually disabled/ill when they're not.. But from my own experience, most disabled people won't run around playing on the fact they have a disability just to get sympathy, stuff or whatever.
You totally missed my point! I was saying the guy was not really sick he was faking it to get free stuff. Do you understand now? I never said anything about disable or really ill players. I was saying the OP was taken advantage of by someone pretending to be something they are not just like he does.
All you weirdos who keep stating matter of factly that girls do this in RL for attention, to get ahead, to get anything out of men ect... Need to get your head examined and dump whatever hoe(s) you have been dating thus far.
That goes for all you girls dating jackasses who just use for your 'assets'. There's people using people all the time whatever sex they are with whatever they have. However to say this is a normal thing and we should all live with it and understand that this poor chap is just playing the game of life is both highly pessimistic and having absolutely no faith in yourself or others. There are perfectly honest and balanced people out there. I promise. ^_^
So again quit dating these horrid wenches already and try to pick in a different pool of girls. I do say this out of experience, I dated nothing but bad ass pretty boys until I got sick of being mistreated, not listened to and perched on someone's arm for looks. So I looked in other places, right in front of my face as it happened and found the first and only decent boyfriend I've ever had..

I agree. I don't understand why they think that this acceptable in any environment, by any sex, at any time.
I am a woman and do not associate with any women or men that are like this. People like this sadly do exist, but that is not "the norm" . Most people I know are fun loving, honest, and helpful. The world may have scum bags in it but they are in the minority and the Human race would have been wiped out centuries ago if people had all been self centered. Relationships regardless of what type are all give and take. Your parents raise you, then you help them when they are old. Your spouse takes care of you and you take care of them in return. You are in a car wreck and neighbors pull over and try to help you, if you see someone hurt you stop to help. That is what makes this world, that is why we have survived, that is what life is all about, not this nonsense of "dog eat dog" and "take advantage of people that do not know any better" no that is not how we live, those who do live that way are too small minded to realize that life is too short to live it that way, and that they are a part of something much bigger here.
Once-upon-a-time there were very great games that enticed people (such as myself) to play games because of the awesome graphics, storyline, art etc. Back in those days people would play these games and pretend they were in the game themselves; whether it was to slay a dragon or to obtain a very special item, people role played to the fullest and tried to be the very best at being a warrior, mage, rogue or what-ever. Sadly, (of my own opinion) These days are slowly becoming a thing of the past.
I have noticed many people play to make friends (I like making friends in onlione games) because its ALOT MORE fun playing with another player when your gaming and that person can play well and at times make you laugh. One of the purpose of a role playing game is just that "to role-play" pretend you are that warrior or mage all you want, and when you get that hott item the next player don't have you can flaunt around town like a king. Now I also believe there is a limit to doing everything in life including playing these kind of games, in all things I think moderation is needed. Role playing should have its boundaries when it comes to trying to manipulate other players with a toon you have (my opinion). If a person is going want a relationship with you after playing with you online and only seeing a toon to go off of plus whatever else you make up then personaly I think that person may just be kind of desparate or alone and you should have some kinda of pity not to play with them like that. That person that says "I'm in love" with someone I don't know though, is obviously playing the game for reasons other than the original intent of role-playing.
Role playing games -to me - is so that I can pretend to save the world or something, not to try and find some butt. I met an 11 year old kid on W.o.W. He was a level 70 druid and cool as heck, I've seen people mistakenly type things out in the open that a kid his age should not have to be subjected to while only trying to have fun. Will he ever remember reading those things? who knows, but I bet somewhere in his subconcious mind he is aware of this and now has an unwanted option whether to partake of it or not.
I put parental controls on my comcast service for a reason, and I have had to (on several occasions) tell my 6 year old son not to watch me play for a while because he reads very well and I caught him reading bad things out load off a general chat screen while I was afk, I was a bit upset but there is nothing I can do about that except talk to him. Anyhow, this post is so darn long, sheesh, I'm out.
You know, I play girl toons too in MMORPGs (I'm a guy in RL) but I always tell the truth of who I truly am if someone asks. I hate people like the OP ... he makes us people who do it for other reasons look bad. I sometimes play a female in MMORPGs so 1) I can look at a female's back, rather than a male's back 2) I like to role-play as someone different from me (I NEVER play as a human unless I have to) and com'mon, female night elves are just so sexy. I was also a female mon calamari in Star Wars Galaxies before the NGE hit, but that was purely because I wanted to be something outside who I am as possible, like an alter-ego, as I named her "Loceedoma Nomerhino". I don't find mon calamari's attractive or sexy at all. >> << >>

Men are 3-5 times more likely than women to gender-bend in MMORPGs. The demographic that is most likely to gender-bend are men over the age of 25. We know that 85% of MMORPG players are male, so if you do the math, at any given moment, half of all female avatars are actually being played by men.
There are many compelling explanations for why men gender-bend so much more often than women. The most pragmatic reason is that female avatars are treated better and more likely to receive gifts and help from other players (who are mostly men). In other words, men gain a functional advantage when they gender-bend whereas women lose that advantage. Another pragmatic reason is that in games where third-person perspective is used, men prefer to stare at a female body rather than a male body. This is tied closely to the Laura Croft Syndrome - the appeal of being able to view and, more importantly, control a female body that is sexy but deadly. Feminists have argued that male gender-bending is really just a new way for men to dominate female bodies. In other words, avatars such as Laura Croft are appealing to men because it gives men the satisfaction of dominating a powerful female body.
Players who have tried gender-bending oftentimes talk about how the experience has changed their understanding of gender roles. Men who have tried gender-bending describe the tension between being treated better and being treated as inferior. Many of them feel that female avatars are viewed as weaker and less capable than male avatars. Women who have tried gender-bending often realize how differently men are socialized - that they should never ask for help or show weakness. As one player describes.
I used to think men had it easy! Now I know they have issues too; they are socialized to be more independent and not ask for help. That has to be tough.
I don't see anything wrong with playing a girl toon to that extent but then again i have been scarred for life by most people mistaking me for a girl. I do play girl toons and i just let people think what they want if they ask i'll tell them im a guy but a lot of times they ask me to send them something like a myspace page before asking if im a guy or not thats when i decide im going to mess with there heads a little. now ive seen people that freak when they learn your a guy playing a girl toon. (to the extent of harssing you and getting banned for it) Now i would ask most guys who say its wrong if when you play a 3rd person only game would you prefer looking at a female's butt all day or a male's. frankly i prefer the females but i just might be weird.

Same as you, i dont see anything wrong with people playing girl toons either. Freedom of choice, isnt that what its all about?
I've never really had many discussions with female players. Women belong in the kitchen not in my raiding parties. I did have a female friend in Pre-CU SWG who sold me and my buddy cheap armor.
It might be fun to pose as one though and screw with the lonely and pathetic male powergamers who have all the cool gear.
It might be good for them actually, they might realize eflirting gets them nowhere and they might go out of their parents basements in order to find something a bit more reliable.

Very good post, mate. In terms of a subject observing other subjects, it's very interesting to see what playing an MMO implies. In old-school multiplayer games (from Quake to NWN), I believe we needed less of that pre-loaded "knowledge" we now need to play an MMO: don't trust everyone (not the same as never trusting anyone), take into consideration possible smokescreens, and always keep to yourself or to the people you've come to know... but the most important is: remember that not everyone plays for fun anymore. Some play to satisfy their OCD with loot drops, others like the OP with a different intent in mind, and everything between.
And that's where the problem is, I think. When people cross-over the state of their current life into a game where you interact with other persons in a more significant manner than in games of old. But, is it a problem, really, or just a new element of playing in these games that we have to expect as part of the regular experience? It's tiring, to say the least.
How often do some people play these games? I know some people play at least 6 hours a day. My old roommate used to play SWG for no less than 4 hours a day.
How many hours a day do these people spend with their kids, with their girlfriends/wives, or outdoors doing something else? I bet less time is spent with others than playing online games.
My point is that for some people, I would say a lot more people than we probably know, online gaming IS their life. The people they hang out with online ARE their friends, and the spend more time with those people then they do with anyone else. It seems almost natural that people like this would seek out relationships online.
Games are fun for me, and sometimes I put off doing work to play them, but my wife would make my life miserable if I spent that much time playing. For those who don't have that restriction, I can see how they might seek out love in a game. It's strange to me, but I think it's probably more prevelant than most of us realize.
Not unethical. Any guy that allows you to take advantage of him because he believes you are a female, is a fool and deserves it. Hopefully it will teach him a lesson for the real world.

and probably thinks playing tomb raider is the equivilant of getting a sex change

Cold Calculating Machines Got Nuthin' On Me
For the staring at the butt part yup, you are weird.
Tecmo Bowl.
Well to further all this, think about it...
Tecmo Bowl.
Not unethical. Any guy that allows you to take advantage of him because he believes you are a female, is a fool and deserves it. Hopefully it will teach him a lesson for the real world.
If you don't realize taking advantage of others in any sense is wrong ..... that is including in a game then you just lack morals.
