It will never be popular as WOW , but thats the dead race.
WOW had over 4 years being the single and only quality MMO , and it has build quite some following.
And it is PVE game , while PVP Warhammer is bit more niche

WoW is hardley the ONLY quality MMO out today, not by a long shot.

    Sadly, it is.

Hm I cant agree with you on that.  Don't get me wrong, I know WoW is a great game, but I don't think it's alone in it's superior quality.  No, I think Eve is definitely something that should be considered as another top mmorpg.

As I pressed Enter, I thought about EVE, I was about to edit the post to include it.  EVE is in another league, but yes it's a quality MMO.

150k-500k subscribers =  A live team that delievers free content in near monthly patches.  This includes only LotRO at the current time.. although early on it included AC, EQ, SWG , DAoC and UO
500k+ subscribers =  A live team and a company making more money than they know what to do with :)  This is the WOW catagory.
My guess is that Warhammer will have between 750k and a million subscribers.  This will put them at 10% of wow, but still easily in the catagory of games that will be able to financially support a huge dev team, which is all that is important.

If they have 500k+ subs in 4 months i will be very surprised.

I was being nice in my post because games failing doens't help my hobby (playing games).

My hunch is...  This game may do well at launch as AoC did... I don't see this game ever hitting 1 million subs let alone 2.. that's concurrent subs... not total over time aka 100,000 people join/quit a month over 10 months.. could be seen as 1 million subs.. but the concurrent level was never higher than 100,000.

It won't be that WAR is a bad game.. its just got nothing new to offer in any way shape or form... Hunches you know.. don't have to be logical... its just a feeling right?

That's a hunch... but the point would be... you don't need 1 million or 2 million subs to succeed.  There are not many MMO's that have had more than 450,000 subs.. that were made by a North American company.

In fact I think even mentioning these numbers is a bad idea.. because if the game has say 250,000 or 300,000 it should be considered a major success... but may not be seen that way by EA or its share holders (this would be bad).

Then there was the poster that mentioned Tiers of game success.

You do realize that UO for example never had free content even at its peak subscriber level?  It had IN game content that used to be provided by the Interest team (seers, elders etc.. and the Interest GM's that were actual paid employees).

UO still has that.. has never consolidated servers.. has even opened new ones time to time.. and is fairly successful in Europe and Asia.  SoE as an example has never had an MMO succeed in Asia even tho the parent Corp. is based in Japan..

And EA did invest time/resources into the KR client.. just an odd sidenote to something I saw in the thread.

WoW pwner? i doubt it but first you would have to determine, the level of pwning, if you believe that this game will steal a majority of wowers away from wow to WAR.. I seriously doubt it, i mean the people that know the warhammer universe would be intelligent enough to stay away from WoW, I mean wow isnt a great game, its an alright game, that has done some things right. If war can do what wow has done, do it better, and then go one further with something revolutionary, they may have a huge client base, but it doesnt seem likely that wow will loose players anytime soon.

So wow pwnower probably not, but  a good successful game, very possible.

This is something else that I forgot to mention. The larger guilds tend to move together in a pack. If enough of the e-celeb guilds move onto WAR, a lot of people (uberguilds listing) will follow, which will lead to others following, and, and...

LoL@at the guy who said WAR had nothing new to offer. It has a lot of new stuff to offer, especially for the WoW players which make up the greater majority of the pie.

Hehe, I think it's quite the oposite, if large guilds leave, the real WoW players won't even notice.

Only if the playerbase is suddenly made out of hard core raiders, you know basicly the only group that actualy needs guild structure.

Everyone loves WoW playerbase, it's so huge you can take any part of it to make your opinion valid.

Guilds are the heart and soul of WoW and ANY mmo. Why do you think WAR had a GUILD beta.  Friends follow friends even if the game sucks until the alpha friends move on.

If you have a server where suddenly the top raiding guilds dissapear the rest will take it as an omen as whats to come. When you see 100's of people running from something you tend to follow especially if those people are the "elite".

Sorry but it was always plastered all over the raiding@dungeon, PvP, and general forums with 20 pages of posts per if a hardcore guild quit. I didn't like them, doubt people outside of their circle did, but the point is that people noticed it. The reasons as to why they quit spread around.

Talking about it, yes. Leaving following them, no.

So, we all just move around . The market will grow as more Chiness get online. I for one have not seen a MMO that i could call home. Im a solo player and group player also. Illplay this one til i get bored, i hope it dont happen the first 1-2 years. WoW kept me for 3 yrs. We will see.

    does it really matter?

if people belive it is a wow killer, than it will become a wow killer.

if people dont belive it, than it wont.

the real power is at the mercants/retailers, they can control the market.. its all about availability.. why is wow so big? because you can even buy this game at 7 eleven now.. and you most likely wont play a game you have never heard about, and theres lots of wow players who thinks wow is the only mmo in the world.

if you have to go to gamestop/ebgames to buy a game, because no one else sells it, than the game will not become big.. if you can buy it at 7 eleven than we talk about madness.

The one thing that gets me is that when Mythic made DAOC they had 250k max subs at one time then they lost a good portion of those players over time. Now just because Mythic is making WAR people think they are going to get millions. How they figure this out is beyond me. Mythic and Mythic fans should just be concerned with having a good solid release at this point.

well wow came out what 2004 not sure since it is 8AM on a saturday  anyway i don't think that war's min system requirements will be much more if that if people are avid gamers and actually keep up with it then i highly doubt that anyone is still running a 512mb socket a 8500radeo system anymore and if they are they need to get 200$ togeather and upgrade their system

I think you are mistaking WoW for a game with good community, such as Everquest.

In WoW, each server does not care what guilds do what. I'm sure most of the people on the servers couldn't even list the "top" raiding or PvP guilds anyways. Even if the top guild from each server on WoW left, very few would follow.

Hell, unless the guild went out of their way to spam /2 and the WoW forums, no one would even know they were gone.

To the OP.../sighs and prepares pre-made answer...

WAR will be it's own game, it'll be fun, it won't kill WoW, it'll make a big dent and if it's solid then that dent will only grow, make sure you play Order, Destruction sucks, for Sigmar, I need some Frosted Flakes.

I never did that earlier hehe.

    --------------------------------------
A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

It doesn't matter in the slightest.  The only thing that will "kill" WoW is time.  As the expansions come over the next few years, the sub numbers will slowly decline.  It's what happened to EQ and other successful MMOs.

BTW, the amount of people spouting off their opinions as fact in this thread is amusing.  You don't like WoW or you don't like WAR.  That's all well and good as you are entitled to your opinion.  However just because that is case doesn't mean "everyone", "people", or "all MMO players" agree with you.
