(This is a VERY LONG POST! Do not read it if you're a negative person who gets emotional upset over Video Games and the internet. As an adult gamer, I have no empathy for you. Im sorry. If youre interested in Darkfall at all, continue on, im sure you would love another read about DF while on the clock. )
Long nerdrage to follow-
Ive played so many MMOs.. I feel like a cheap date when it comes to MMOs.. I get into bed with them with little research for most of them, then I start cheating on them or leave them altogether after a couple of monthes. Its like I found true love in Ultima Online and havent been able to get that feeling back.
I read it alot, people cannot grasp the nature of a meaningful PvP game. "Its all about the thrill of the fight!".
No.. Its not. Its all about feeling like the battle meant something. The fun comes with that. They dont understand because there hasnt been a game to capture the glory of UO and back then the industry was just a baby.
Alot of gamers cannot grasp the enjoyment of a looting enviroment. They think its griefing and everyone who plays it just wants to annoy people. Its because they havent played it, plain and simply.
Im not a griefer, im a PvPer. I want each encounter to mean something. Im tired of 'rubberband PvP' which consists of continiously fighting until someone gets bored and wanders away. I want each PvP fight to have closure.
I think too many people are scared of losing anything in MMOs nowadays. This is due to spending weeks/monthes/years to obtain phat loots. Heck I cant lie, I like phat loots as much as the next guy.. But phat loots doesnt have to cost you so much time. Looting would only work in a system where loot is easily obtainable.. They think there is no phat loot or everybody runs around with a vanilla short sword and wooden buckler.
Darkfall will have plenty of great items, both from NPCs and players. Heck some these items may in fact take up to a week to get, but the great thing about a game like DF is that the bonus to using these items is why you use them.
You wont run around with an item because it looks cool.. You wont always be using the same stuff, guarenteed. Also you wont always have the good loot sitting in your bank rotting. Its a common misconception that you wont ever use it for fear of losing it. Most wont understand until they play it. There is a risk and reward balance.. And majority of it is controlled by each individual. You could easily play through this game with the bare minimal, if you wanted.
DF is coming into the market at a vital time, people are tired of meaningless PvP or fighting 'For the horde'.. Alot of games think youll fight for the glory of your side, just for the heck of it. A game like Darkfall will reall instill people with a sense of immersion. You will fight for what you believe and you will fight for yourself. You will find factions in a game like Darkfall, eventhough there is no factions. The communities will split and shift, constantly. There will be simple game morale choices throughout your time in the game. Its like one of those Fable/KOTOR type things, only there is no 'NPC 2 is in trouble, let them die or help them.'.. Alot of these decisions will present themselves as players. Run by see a corpse.. Loot it , gaining an enemy, or rez the guy and help him get back on his feet, gaining a friend.
Eventually how you decide to treat other players, will reflect your alignment. Do you care about the community or do you just want their loot? So many people will play differently. Majority will mix the two heavily.
There is no reason to fear loot and the community it is 'supose' to bring. Its a game where you will have a real reputation. You wont gain it from killing some boss.. You will gain it from interacting with the community.
Are you the guy who sells cheap armor constantly? The guy who kills people by the first dungeon? The guy who helps those in need? The guy who sticks around town and becomes a well known merchant? The guy who runs a huge player city? The guy who explores the corners of the game universe and sells its secrets? The guy finds good housing plots and becomes a realitor? The guy who sells his services to the highest bidder? The guy who gathers wood? The guy who buys and sells goods for profit? The options are endless.
Most MMOs there is a structure.. You must follow it.. level level level, now this is unlocked! Crafting requires certain levels. Everything revolves around 'What level you are!' for what you can do. There is also little reason to go to areas youve 'completed' due to no reason to PvP or no extras to accomplish.
Embrace a game like Darkfall even if you are wary of the nature of it. You will never have such a bond with your virtual characters and never have such a sense of community, and your place in it.
Darkfall wont be a 'die and start over' game by any means and I think thats what some people are scared of. It isnt the end of the world when you die and lose your things. There are more things and such things are not 1400 gold because some no-lifers control the market. Its a simple game at its core, its complexity is in its customization and openess.
I cannot wait for Darkfall and anyone who shys away from it because they are scared of the "looming penalities" is a fool and doing themselves a great injustice.
I also see people get bitter about this game.. Those people usually LOVE THE GAME.. But have that personality flaw that doesnt have any empathy or patience.
It will come and if we dont support the potential we see in it, we slow it down even more.
Ive been following it for 4 years and I know a little of the going ons with the guys.. They havent had all the means to make DF, heck might still not completely.. The more excitement we PATIENTLY have, the more support they get from interested investors.
If you're a mature gamer who knows potential when you see it, you would support this game or get off its nuts.
Patience is a virtue.

This board is pretty much dead for Darkfall information. If you're reading this, you probably have some interest in Darkfall.
Just wanted to first say- Where are we? wink
Seriously though, this is an affiliate site for Darkfall, some would be silly enough to not have checked
http://forums.darkfallonline.com/forumdisplay.php?f=9
Which is a stem of the official forums. Surely folks would understand such a back breaking development as Darkfall, wouldnt permit enough wasted effort reaching every corner of the internet that google deems informative.
That being said, the game is very much alive. Ive followed it for 4 years, before that I briefly checked in on its progress. What angst filled teenagers don't understand, is the variables involved in this game's creation...
Heck I dont know these guys.. Wikipedia isnt always 100% accurate, but whats listed here is alot of truth.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darkfall
I know, who isnt tired of reading my eye bashing bibles by now.. But let me nutshell it:
A couple of dudes said 'Lets make the best game ever.' and started to do so on a 'Out of a basement' level. Dedicated as they were, an MMORPG takes serious effort.. And cash. So they found 5 other dudes who thought it was a good idea. They merged companies and moved to a central office, in Greece.
The game starts getting fleshed out.. But oh no, the industries technologies are advancing at leaps and bounds. So its back to square one on some of the major areas of the game- Namely graphics.
Funding is tight and without a publisher they struggle with the ideal of self-publishing. This probably would have been financial suicide, if not impossible for regular smoes. Still the hype and following of the game brought new attention and finally a publisher ended the stalemate.
The game is closing in on completion. 10 people did not throw their lives away for 7 years, to see it crumble with dust. It isnt some bored individuals sick trick on the internet.
It is a real game being made by nobodys. They will make mistakes and heck they will keep their game tighter then a nun's rectum.
But it will launch, there is no doubt in my very educated mind. As someone who has been in the industry since its birth, I can tell you these guys would simply SAVE money and their minds, by publically pulling the plug if they thought it not obtainable.
They will not and for no good reason should they.
Its said the game will launch in 2008, but I have a strong belief it will be closer to summer 09.
Dont miss out cause some assclown showed his impatience by turning his frustration into anger. Instead of being a logical human being. Most of these people will have their posts read [Removed Due To TOS], of some form.. If not you wont hear them because they're banned from official forums for being a douche of the bag.
Cya in the game.
VIVA LA DARKFALL!!

Hey cool, this is the post from DF forums, I liked it when i read it there, and i like it here too! GJ
Sad thing is, games with difficulty or risk vs reward, don't make as much money. Much more satisfiying game, but it takes a little more patience. But I agree with you totally, long live Darkfall, whenever it comes out.
(in before the vaportrolls)
Darkfall Travelogues!
Sure ill reference all types of things from many eras.
But as the theme of the threads goes- Most dont understand the industry. Its thriving right now and its prime time to chisel away at the swelling number of newage MMORPGers.
Sure it doesnt get the attention of a muscled breast grabbing barbarian or a morphed table top MMO.. But the market is ripe for the plucking.. Its obvious people will give many different games a whirl, look at the filth flooding the market.
"Oh this game is free! Oh let me just buy an animal that loots for me.. Heck throw in an XP doubler.. Crap gimme those health pots too! On noes, im ready for the big leauge RPG games now!"
And ready they are. Ready alot are, for meaningful PvP.
It don't matter if they're laughing with you or at you, so long as they're laughing.
Chubby you have just reinstalled my hope for this game! i was really doubting it gain but after your heartfelt post i am going to sit and be patient agin and watch this space. makes a change to see a worthwhile post about darkfall!
Glad to hear it Shuke, I recommend heading to the official forums for any information youre seeking. Some think its tainted with lies, but unless it starts requiring a credit card to post.. Im taking it for what it is.
Its where im most likely to see any authentic information.
Im the type who would head butt a store window if I liked what I saw too much. Its simple on the internet though.. People simply wanted to play the game the moment they first laid eyes on it.
Over the years.. Im sure many of them had to get a friggen life while waiting for Darkfall.. Do they thank them?
Really though its not a frozen pizza.. Somebody has to knead the doh and slice the pepperoni.. Its easy to get to know their situation a little bit and apply common sense.
Most will come in here with tears streaming.. Ripping me to shreds, slamming away at the hypothetical balloon knot of the game itself, and try to convince others (but really themselves, Dr Phil interjected) that they didnt get to play it right now.. So its poopware and fit only for poops.
Meanwhile plenty of us embrace the life given to us by a plague of uncontrolable setbacks by the game that brings back meaning in MMORPGs.
And no im not 7 feet tall, its a soapbox.
It don't matter if they're laughing with you or at you, so long as they're laughing.
I just read this post on the DF forums a few minutes ago as well, good work Chubby!
Proud Master CH -
Sorry,
Proud FORMER Master CH...
my toon was untimely converted into something more Star Warsy
This game will come im sure of it, i promote it for longtime now here on mmorpg.com for years.
But its a fact majority nomatter how hard you try explain full open pvp and full loot is not for all and i respect that, you can,t say they miss something or misslead its just not for them.
Some like apples others orange.
Some like rap some like hardrock.
Some like controlled save pvp in battlegrounds/arena's/pve.
Some like free for all pvp with full loot.
The latter one will always be for nich market, its for those who dont care to die in pvp and lose stuff who dont mind play a game without any guidance by game.
Some like sandbox
Majority like themepark this will always be case.
I realy hope darkfall will get at least 200k players becouse it deserves it.
Sandbox games like darkfall are new hope for mmo'market not to save it but for showing that a game like this can also be alot of fun and can have a life next to the big ones like wow.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
After some people have waited seven years, you expect them to be patient?
Going weeks, sometimes months, without news, you expect them to be patient?
Getting led on each time Tasos gives them false hope, you expect them to be patient?
Still without evidence that DF has any of the promised features, you expect them to be patient?
Without beta only several months from release, you expect them to be patient?
There are people who have waited seven years for DF, beginning to think each year will be different. Starting to think mabye, just mabye, this might be the year for Darkfall.
If Darkfall hasn't been in development so long, this wouldn't be a problem.
If DF could prove any of its claims, this wouldn't be a problem.
If Tasos didn't lie and lead people to think each year will be the year, this wouldn't be a problem.
If they gave their fans some reasurance, this wouldn't be a problem.
If they cared about their fanbase, this wouldn't be a problem.
P.S. Are you the same person from the DF forums?

Who cares unless there's a playable demo?
Vaporware. It's getting old.
Only thing I'm worried about in DF (if it ever releases), will be the horrid outdated graphics it will have because of a much older engine. I'm not one to push for graphics, but we all know a game with an old engine = a game that won't sell. Doesn't matter how good the functions are or anything, if it looks like crap people would rather play pinochle with their parents.

Ok, here is the problem with looting.
Most MMO's now rely upon grinding for gear as the proverbial carrot in front of the donkey. We the gamers are the donkey. When someone grinds for weeks or months to acquire an item or an item set they are going to be royally pissed when they lose that item, especially if it is in a manner they deem cowardly or unfair. So it is simple [gear grinding] + [full loot PvP] = [Griefing]
I say we do away with gear grinding and go at it, personally. I don't want to spend 8 hours or more in one stupid instance trying to get [Jehova's Necklace of Witnessing +++++Everything] anyway. I play a game for fun, not a false sense of accomplishment.
I suggest partial looting or maybe allow each player to bind one item to their character that cannot be looted. If you want to have godly gear... but personally I think having godly gear or two hundred levels for a character is the wrong way to go anyway. Throw in some character aging and item degradation for me also!
Besides.. Congress is thinking about taxing virtual economies anyway and I for one, don't want to give them more ammunition.
dude i don't know what you're talking about, i think Darkfall graphics are excellent, ESPECIALLY given their explicit intention to design for lower polygon counts to make large battles possible.
Today's Darkfall trolls were once Darkfall fanboys who for various reasons (mainly immaturity and naivety) got sick of waiting for Darkfall and became bitter and resentful towards it.
I loved UO too but that style had it's own set of problems. The more you risk losing the better you do at PvP, and the less willing you are to die. These conditions create problems like vanq hally swinging tank mage gank squads with thousands of gold worth of potions that offscreen at the first sign that they have less than an 80% chance of winning.
Of course, there were the cool guys out there that could win 3v1's with nothing but a GM halberd, regs, and an apron with his bare ass hanging out, but when people reach the aforementioned level of cheapness these types of cool people quit the game.
_______________________________
PM me when an MMO as good as UO was comes out.
As much as I hate to say it, we will never find PvP like we had in UO because that generation of gamers has passed. The new generation is all about smack talking and griefing. PvP is no longer about meaningful and honorable fights, but instead about who's got the bigger epeen, corpse camping, and zerging. This is why open PvP/looting games don't find much success. People just don't enjoy all the garbage that comes with it.
I, too, was in love with UO in it's glory days. Sure I had my fair share of being killed, probably more than my fair share actually since I'm not an amazing PvPer. Still, it was fun and, once upon a time, you could usually count on the person who killed you also rezzing you and leaving something on your corpse. It just won't happen anymore. Today's gamers are generally too immature and too full of themselves to consider playing the way we did back then. There are, of course, still some like you and I who still have the honor and decency to not get a kick out of doing things just to ruin someone's day, but we really are the rare finds anymore.
this is only a real problem if the game itself allows these losers - i mean people - to escape fights easily, eg: in EVE, which is easily the most successful sandbox MMO around, escaping a fight once engaged is pretty difficult, and the makers of EVE (CCP) have shown a strong history of nerfs and changes that maintain this difficulty (eg: recent nano ship nerf).
the other forms of cheapness are of course zerging and newbie camping/griefing, both of which need carefully implemented game mechanics to discourage.
personally, i still think DAOC created (and still has) the best ever MMO PVP -- roaming 8man group-v-group. the large-scale siege combat was also very well done, albeit somewhat laggy once player numbers ranged into the 100s.
if Darkfall can tap into the guild/faction-based group-style PVP of DAOC, while retaining a strong element of FFA PVP, along with good actual combat gameplay, there is no doubt it will be a very successful game, even if it never approaches WOW player numbers.
I just love the "good ole days" of UO references......My first impression of UO was horrible.....I wandered around brittain abotu 10 minutes then tried going outside the main gate.....Dead about 10 feet later.....It wasnt so much dying that bothered me its that there were a group of players just waiting there to kill anyone that walked out the gates..... To me there is no fun in just getting slaughtered by high level players where I have no chance...Sorry but that is not the kind of game I want........I tried it again a few years later when it was no longer just Felucca only and it was better but still not that thrilling of a game....At that point most players were just using macros/scripts to do all their training and 90 percent of them were afk.... While most UO players brag about how skill based the game was more than likely a high percent obtained their skill using these scripts that did the training for you......UO was never that great of a game.....It never had more than 250k subs and most of those didn't come until they opened up the safe areas......The graphics also are just not acceptable by todays standards.....
AoC and WAR were started years after Darkfall, and they are releasing now.
Doesn't that give you a clue?
i will never play DF, BUT i have nothing against it.
if it hits the street... great, if not.. meh.
but i have to ask.
OP, did you work in the U.S.S.R as propaganda chief?
This thread does not belong in the Pub, it belongs in the DF dorums with the rest of the cults' meandering writings.
Darkfall is nothing but a scam to get money from investors. They said back in May that had a gameplay video. Then they said we will release in July, then August. I am sorry, it doe snot take that long to release a video.
If they ever do release a gameplay video it will be a tech demo. There is no game people..
This is coming form one of the biggest Darkfall supporters. I have finally lost faith.
Well iam not gonna hold my breath for this game to release. But ill definately try it if and when it does come out.
I believe that Darkfall will eventually be released, however, I feel that it will not be 'as expected'.
I see many similarities between Darkfall and BC3K, if anyone remembers the beginnings of that.
Just my 2 cent.
Cheap Marketing plant...
As far as UO...it was all about griefing and exploiting severly broken game mecanics that evolved over time as other games came into the market, making UO look quite primitive. Some see that all as a good thing, suffering through the "hard" or "good" times depending on your outlook. Others saw it as a waste of time and not fun at all. To each his own. Eve is the same way. People complain about ganking in WOW, yet in Eve, thats all you got. Every PvP encounter is a gank, a fight set up before hand to be extremely unfair for the loser....total waste of time.
