One thing I am curious about is the construction of guild cities. We saw a little bit of it, and it may have been accelerated for the video purposes, but I wish we would have seen something like an overhead view of laying out the structures.
And also the scene that has the safe in it, where we see some UI and transfering of items, I wonder if thats an NPC town or a guild city. The large single safe suggests a guild city, but im not sure. Im going to rewatch that in detail.
But guys can we please drop the debate of wether this video was in-game footage or not. Really just watch it and look at the movements of the characters. It is ingame footage, there is actually text saying "ingame footage" so lets try to discuss what the video has shown us.
I think the graphics arguement is very valid. The animations are definitely not as smooth as they could be. And some people value that more than others which is cool.
But the fact is this video confirmed the existence of Darkfall. You can debate it all you want, and try and point out random other things, but the fact is the debate is over on DF being real or not.
Its status on release and feature list on the other hand is still up in the air until beta.
This game looks like a modern day Asheron's Call, taken up a notch. I really wish them the best and hope they pull it off. If they do and it makes a lot of money, it could end the cycle of clones this genre has been getting the last few years.
This x10000.
Already we have seen the DF official forums explode with new members over just the video and *another* beta signup. Hopefully they release well and it brings some courage into some of the larger developers to go outside the box a little bit.
I want to play so badly it hurts. Beta please come my way. The feeling you get from watching these live ingame battles is great. I put myself in the shoes of some of the people playing for the video and just think how cool it would be. Im walking with a couple of my friends, maybe after we just took down a pve mob with some great loot. Then all of a sudden they start dropping one at a time...there is an archer somewhere. I start feeling scared because we have this loot we need to protect and we are about to lose it. Heart starts pumping a little because of the real pvp consequences so i take cover. Then i see the archer in the tree as he takes out another one of my friends. I line up my spell and knock him off to his doom, and we all breathe a sigh of relief. This is real pvp. Real immersion. A truly real experience. Something this genre needs badly.
Not forgetting, last man standing get the rest of the guy's stuff
They could take out the full loot part as far as im concerned as I really dont care about loot period. If I get rolled in pvp and have to spend half the day to re-gear my toon thats 1/2 a day waisted imo.
Just a heads up...im not attacking you here. I just think what you said is a perfect example of what i want to explain...
Your 1/2 day waisted comment is the reason why a lot of us are so excited about this game. While i dont think a 1/2 day of tiem spent in game will be wasted (you had fun while playing right)...it is the reason why this game will be so immesive.
In WoW, WAR, AoC, etc...you go into pvp and have no problem blindly rushing into a battle. Or have any concern about any consequences.
That fear of losing 1/2 day of your work is the reason why you will feel immersed. The freedom this game gives is amazing. You wont just aim yourself at the next town and hit autorun...you will carefully scout out the area and appreciate the chances someone is looking at you right now ready to pounce.
You will pm a few friends with message like "Hey guys I just crafted 10 superior quality swords for the guild, can you guys come give me some back up while I carry them to x location?"
This is definitely a niche game. It will NEVER see numbers like WoW, WAR, etc...but it will be populated and will be exciting if it released well.
I understand what your saying and its a good point. I never blindly rush into any pvp senario on any game as is. So far DAoC did pvp the best imo, back in the day if you blindly rushed into pvp you got a quick trip back to the port keep and had to wait and rebuff etc etc ( hated that ) . Ill agree wows pvp has no consequences and its selling point is pure loot anyway. Im not saying Full Loot pvp cant be fun, all im saying is I really dont care about loot at all in games. Just give me a weapon and let me loose =P. Linage 2 was a pretty good example of how bad loot droping can turn a game away from pvp.
1. The animations. They definelty need to be tightened up as others have mentioned. It doesn't have to be 'mostion capture' that's sort of a buzzword for idiots, just make them more realistic.
2. The particle effects - spells and blood spatter were quite bad. They would probably do better just lowering the particle count and maybe even taking out the blood entirely.
3. The jumping - It looks like everyone was Bobafet flying around with a jet pack. Oh yeah, you can't swim in metal armor.
All in all though it really looked good. It's moved up to my #1 list of games I am looking forward to playing (not counting the unspecified ones from 38 Studios, Bioware and Stray Bullett).
It seems to me darkfall is going to turn out as it was described. Sure the animations look really bad lol, but, at least to me and alot of people i know, thats not important at all. Although I do wish they would have shown player housing, since that usually plays a large role in mmos that have housing in it. I have a vast experience of MMORPGs, which I have played for 8 years (i'm sure there are many people that played longer than me), and it really does seem to me that DarkFall Online may quite possibly be the greatest MMO I've seen since Ultima Online in 98.
I don't understand how some people can be so biased towards these graphics. There are a lot saying here how the graphics are so poor, sure they're dated... but not poor. Are they AoC... no. Are the WAR... no. It's a small step below. It's not like it's some graphics step-up from Red Alert 1 to C&C3.
So sad you see the gamers saying "graphics aren't a big deal!", and the second a new game doesn't have the extremely top of the line, need an 8800+ series to play minimum... "the graphics are unplayable".
I understand what your saying and its a good point. I never blindly rush into any pvp senario on any game as is. Walker you are definitely one of the old school PvP'ers I miss. PvP's purest form is Skill vs Skill. Pretty much why I believe FPS will always be superior PvP games when compared to MMO's. "Just give me a weapon and let me loose" Spoken like a true PvP'er.
In War - Victory. In Peace - Vigilance. In Death - Sacrifice.
There's three things that really bothered me. 1. The animations. They definelty need to be tightened up as others have mentioned. It doesn't have to be 'mostion capture' that's sort of a buzzword for idiots, just make them more realistic. 2. The particle effects - spells and blood spatter were quite bad. Yea the metal armor swimming had me laughing, but there are some things that need to be sacrificed for gameplay purposes. I dont think any of the mainstream MMOs out there right now address armor + swimming at all.
I don't think i have missed a post in this thread yet, but are there any other mirrors for this video besides youtube and the official website torrent dl yet?
If you have some please post them or pm them so i can put it in the OP.
Thanks.
(I keep hearing that the torrent file is significantly better in terms of quality than youtube, and i would love to see it)
I dont consider myself a troll (maybe of the fanbois but not the game) but I am definately on the hater side moreso.
It also needs to be restated, as it was in the op, that opinions are based purely on the vid not so much the important parts (gamplay etc). This could easily be a fully scripted vid made to look real (not my opinion, but given the history, imo not outside the realms of possibility).
That said, I am very much encouraged. They have made a good decision with regards to graphics imo, in fact in some cases I would say they seemed a little too detailed. It must be remembered that if they intend to pull off an fps mmo you will get considerably inferior graphics because of it. The fact that they have clearly made some drastic sacrifice is a good sign. Especially in the case of spell effects and animation(which many seem to be saying need improvment), well tbh leave them be or even take them down a notch as this is the number 1 issue which will impact gameplay in this type of game.
The bare environment, terrain, is hard to judge given that you can only really say if its impactfull when playing but it seems uninstrusive and easy to negotiate, allowing good exploration and combat scenarios.
The characters seemed detailed, as I said maybe a little too much so, thats a fair few polygons for fps/seige/naval combat. They did in places seem to glide rather than walk but again its a little price to pay for supperior gameplay. Happy to sacrifice a little detail on animation for speed.
Naval combat seemed everything you would want more functional than pretty, which I guess for me is as it should be for this type of game.
Conlusion. There were many more things I would have like to have seen. Being an FPS game a bit more battle (or any) would have been nice in fp perspective, especially for mounted which looked good. Also ranged combat, more ranged casters and rangers would have been nice.
All in all though imo it was a good vid. If we were to take all their words for the features being in game and the direction they wish to take the game and IF it can play with more than 20v20 with decent fps. If we take all those things for granted and the gameplay is good (obviously cant tell from vid) then the vid deffinately has my hopes up. I would very happily play and live in that world.
Any typos you can keep my delete and backspace keys are fcked.

After watching all the clips I can't help but end up with an astounding "meh" feeling. Everything showed in the videos was sub-par. Adventurine really needs to get some marketing people because they did a very poor job of capturing the features they're boasting about. Any MMO dev can show a lot of PvP footage but where's the player looting? The character development? customization?
I'll give them some credit for finally getting some real footage out the door but it seems there wasn't much thought/content put into them. They need much help in the presentation department. The graphics do look ok, especially since the game is pretty much indie, but the world/objects are really lacking detail.
Thats how a combat system should work, finally a real MMO. Other then that, im in peace right now. And all the trolls can go and *¤#" themselves....again.
While this is a step in the right direction it's not a giant step. They have had videos before.
So seriously DF fanboys you got thrown a bone with this video. Nothing more nothing less.

If ya can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen. It's only a game after all...
Heh. I noticed one little detail. I really, really want them to include a different set of cursors when the game launches. i do NOT want the Windows Vista waiting circle appearing when I do something with my mouse in the game.
Anyway, looking forward to try it out for myself. I do hope they can work on the animations and effects a bit more and I also hope they deliver on the rest of what they say (as they now have on the video). Too bad people here refuse to answer my question about the UI, but I guess I will see that when more footage is released and/or I play for myself.
Well the game looks fun. I don tlike too much the graphics and animations and I dont think they are going to improve. Think about it, its a seamless world, the client load in real time everything you see. do you know what happens when you try to load detailed scenery and characters in real time? what happens is Vanguard. Do you know what happens when your try to animate a lot of characters in a single detailed place? what happens is AoC. So for good or bad, this game will come out as what you saw. Average graphics and clunky animations, this is the way of doing things, desgining the game thinking on what your engine needs to animate, show and load.
In my opinion the game looks really good on what it promises, i wasn't looking forward to it until this video. Damn I want more now

Just asa note, Dungeons and Dragons online may not be a mainstream MMO cose of small player base but it addreses the armor + swimming thing. I played for some months with a cleric, and wearing heavy armor makes my toon swim slower than normal, it really was better to remove it.

cool thanks for the clarification, i have no experience with that game or ever really researched it.
But now that i think about it, I believe heavy armor effects things like cast time and movement speed...so even though we didnt see it clearly in the video...heavy armor may just have you swim much slower. It still ignores the fact that you would sink to the bottom, but at least it would make it a little realistic.

Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7

Ok here i what I think and felt
This was a technical build of the game thats why the graphics quality looked older with sharp edges.
All MMO s start that way they coming build till laucg will have shading and smoothing .
Assuming that this was actual gameplay footage it was awesome
1) Loved the part where the Orc mascared giggling babes on the ship.Raiding ships looks fun
2) Cannon bombardment between fort and ship was cool
3) War between waraships was also good
4) I see that we can roll many race apart from humanoids
5) Mounts looked good especially the hedious and ugly one the Orcs rode resembled a boar.
6) Hovercraft like battle rams and cannon power for city seige was good
Overall thumbs up .
Graphics are good, I woudln't touch them. But animations.. game would improve 10x with good animations, I think it' would be worth it.
And lower the blood particles, it's not realistic.
LOL realism in a fantasy game.
YES realism in a fantasy game, there is tons of realism in a fantasy game.
My favorite part was definitely the sound effects. People rolling on the ground yelling? Beautiful.
Ok....
I'm now a believer. Just signed up for the beta!
I agree with most of this, especially the blood. I think it needs to be turned back a notch. And if there are settings to turn it off, which im almost 100% positive there will be, it shouldnt be a problem.
