Meh... the game is ok 5/10 Nothing to write home about mind you. It is very much the care-bear RvR/PvP game of the year. With no Stealth/Invisibility/SpeedBuffs/Utility Classes and no death penalty of any sort the sense of tension is very limited in scope. A world without consequences is a world without excitement. Ultimately everyone is a DPS class of some sort the variety is either you are a range DPS or a melee DPS (despite the in game descriptions of the classes). WAR takes the usual MMORPG class arrangement and simply removes key classes (Stealth and Utility) leaving a weak framework with little variety. Characters almost all look and play essentially the same, now this is fine if you are accustomed to games of limited scope such as WoW but for hardcore MMORPGers I think you will get more bang for your buck should you hold on to your coin for some other game (or even pre-existing already released games). On the up-shot the game runs well on very low end systems, if you can run WoW on max settings than you can run WAR on max settings (with mild frame rate loss ~which we all know is not really a real issue in non reflex based games such as MMORPG's~ with a few exceptions). Comparing WAR to WOW is VERY valid as the games are similar in many ways. They look the same graphically (stylized colour palate, very limited poly count, simplistic light mapping and shaders), they have the same interface, the worlds are seamless (and small), the over-all number of NPC models and world textures are very limited, and both games have a friendly level curve. Ultimately this game will give casual gamers the feeling that they are hardcore PvPers much the way that WoW made casual gamers feel that they were hardcore raiders. I’m not going to extrapolate on my meanings of hardcore VS casual as I know it is a subjective definition but none the less they are definitions that members of our community use to describe specific factions of our communities (they are not value judgments they are simply game play styles based on the limiting factors of everyday life). If you like Wow you will like WAR. WAR could potentially give WoW a run for its money but it will be hard pressed to drag gamers away from the time investment they have already committed to WoW. The accomplishment/acquisition of max level and "high end" raiding gear is significant to a WoW player (as casual gamers have less time to dedicate), and convincing them to start again is unlikely.
Now keep in mind that WAR is still in it's final Beta stage (and the servers are performing as expected ~ which is good news with regards to a stress test AKA: Open Beta); that said it's a bit to late (in the short term) to change many of the factors that I have hit on above.
If you think WAR has no utility classes, you obviously haven't tried DoK, Zealot, or Warrior Priest in their respective utility paths. DoK on the Sacrifice path is probably one of the most well done and skill-required utility classes I've ever seen in an MMO.
I really did not like the Greenskin vs Dwarfs scenario. To me if it is too small, not a lot of room to wiggle around. I went to the Empire vs Chaos. That is good scenario to play. Yeah PQs, I see alot of teamwork, when there are people in area. In scenarios I seen Order/Destruction Zerging to one place to another and no one defends their caps. Like WoW all over again.
Funny thing I seen so far, a guild sign up for a scenario as a group, against an unorganize team and the guild got rolled. I thought that was funny. Titles are so funny at times when you unlock them, "The Pirate"(looted 200 items) is the title I will never change.
Back in closed beta they had a title for selecting yourself (F1) 100 times, it was "I like to touch myself". Unfortunately that little gem has been removed for the retail. I guess it would have offended some neo conservative churchgoing zealots in the US. What a shame, i laughed really hard when i got it the first time (as healer you select yourself as target a lot).
It is now changed to "Ow, my eye", how lame.
To stay on topic, i am a senior beta player, i waws not too impressed how the first beta weekend went but after seeing MJ's post on warhammeralliance it seems we are on the right track.
For me it is the multitude of things you can do at any time without bothering to level up, getting fame points or go collect 10000 Smegheads first. I can log in find a PQ, join a scenario and join a public party within 2 minutes.
Starting at level 1, up to max level and then maybe in a year max renown, there is so many things to keep you busy. For me the game does have a lot of potential and the attitude of the developers towards the community is excellent, no lies, they do not shy away to say they fecked up, i like that.
"Give players systems and tools instead of rails and rules"
i think its cool. i like it. needs some tunin up on the controls and those types of mechanics like targeting and movement. it has a lot of features and a lot of improved features. i like the quest tracker. no more looking through a journal, all the details are on the screen and even the map. cool game.

Everyone is welcome to their opinions but I do have to point out a few things that are wrong with this post from an actual features standpoint.
1) Witch Elf and Witch Hunter both have stealth. 2) Your views on everyone being a DPS class are at least partially wrong, my Rune Priest really doesn't do much dmg at all. 3) If you think all classes play the same you haven't played many classes, that is all I'll say about that.
Hardcore games are dead pretty much because they are a niche market. Darkfall may eventually come out but it will be a complete disaster most likely because they didn't have the funding to do it right and won't have the player base to fix it in a timely manner. I prefer more hardcore rulesets as well but at some point you just have to accept that they aren't going to be a reality most likely.
With games like AoC, Vanguard, and other failures its hard to rate this game as average. Its surely above those games, but its certainly not what I wanted. I was looking for an in-depth game like DAoC or EQ. There is little depth, imo. Very little customization like in DAoC. The quest are great. The PQs are great. The scenarios are OK if you're with people that have a clue. If not, then scenarios plain suck. These aren't like WoW's BG were everyone is doing a free-for-all. You actually have to kill the healer. WoW BG players really need to learn this. I also forgot to mention that the lag is pretty annoying right now.
I would rate this game on par with WoW. I'm still buying the game, but I don't see how I will play it for years like I did EQ and DAoC. I can see myself getting sick of RvR in this game real fast. In fact, I'm pretty sick of it already.
Wow, this almost stated my sentiments EXACTLY, other than the fact that I haven't experienced any lag. I have run across numerous mobs that can attack ME, that when I attempt to attack THEM, I get a lovely all caps yellow sentence running across the screen that says, "TARGET IS NOT ATTACKABLE" or something like that. WTF??
On the depth issue, I pretty well have to agree. Admittedly, my highest level toon so far between PW and OB plus and now....was/is a lvl14 shaman. I did manage to at least get my renown rank 6 gear, too. Love the shaman class. Made a DoK...that's pretty cool too. Fiddled with a bright wizard....meh. Uhm....everything is "pretty cool." It just doesn't "grab me" for some reason. And yes...I'm already pretty burnt out on scenarios and most public quests, actually. They're all fun at first, but for me, it just seems pretty repetitive on most levels.
OH YES...and I'm sorry, to anyone that might disagree, but the crafting is abyssmal. Is it even POSSIBLE to have less depth to crafting than WoW? The answer is a resounding yes...and Mythic did manage that. Sure in WoW you have to make some useless stuff to level, but at least you have to do a bit more than what there is in WAR.
I think most PvP-centric people will like the game. I, personally, don't HATE it. I rather enjoy it, or rather....parts of it. Yet it still doesn't have that exciting feeling that I remember when I first started playing other MMOs. I just can't quite put my finger on WHAT, exactly, that it lacks. O.o It doesn't suck. It just doesn't "PWN" either.

All i can say to both of you is wait , you haven t seen the best this game has to offer as far as rvr is concerened As far as fun as DAOC it is to me in many ways and more but DAOC was my first MMO with RVR ( pvp) and your first is usually the best Anyways you ll have much more fun trust me:) Crafting is another story, they said a million times they re not making it an integral part of the game it s just a mini game really, that can produce some good stuff. I myself am happy because i HATE crafting and hate when it s literally needed in a MMO to compete or at least know someone that is one.
This game is so sweet, I really love the public quests. I did one senario but CTD but it was fun till then lol. Still need to lvl up my guy some more before I head to the RvR lake. LOL I just noticed its almost 10pm man time just flew by. Well I guess its time to grab something to drink and log back in....
yeah. only problem iv had with scenarios atm is the lack of team work. maybe ts just my bad luck..
You have to start cracking some heads and explain things.
For me, this is a wow killer, after playing this for 24 hours & than playing a bg in wow, made wow difinition of meaningless boredom.. (and what does it help that wotlk upgrades the pvp, if you only fight for your own glory and nothing else?)
Now im truely happy that i bought the Collectors Edtion
Gonna Quit wow now, and go WAR Fulltime..
after trying all classes, i most likely gonna play Witch hunter & Engineer.
Combat is slowwwwww. Did i say slow. Auto attack is fine, but this is crazy. So far all the characters i created swing at a very poor pace. Some fights drag out too long. I can understand a system like this in PvP so nobody can one-shot another and fights are more thought out. But i cant handle it.
Hmm, you do understand that the game might as well not have auto-attack right? They've set it up so that you never sit and wait. yes, at low levels you spam a single skill over and over. But it's not like WoW, where you initiate a skill, watch auto-attack for a while and then click again. Every 1.5s you should be pushing a button (you can click your next skill .5s before the global cooldown is up as a kind of preemptive choice), and when you get a lot of skills, there are loads of options. But I agree, auto-attack is slow, but it's also completely useless as I've NEVER been in a situation where I didn't have a skill to use.
And once you get into PvP, it adds a whole new demention to it. Because I clearly remember, at lvl 51 (the highest I could force myself to go) in WoW, STILL relying on 'white' damage. Whereas in WAR, I COMPLETELY rely on using skills whenever possible and using the right skills. In PvP or PvE.
In conclusion, forget that auto-attack exists!!
You make it sound like "skill spamming" is a good thing.
Skill spamming - Mortal Strike in WoW. It's just an attack that does massive DMG and may or may not have a seperate effect, but it's basically all you need to DPS.
Skill spamming does not mean using skills all the time. On my level 7 Marauder, I have to change between Gift of Brutality (main DPS stance) and Gift of Monstrosity (good AoE attack) when I'm fighting. I don't just spam the same skill over and over.
Gershwin (Title: Ow My Eye). Hope to see some of you guys around? The server that starts with an E...Erlasia or something, lol.
Game is good, rough around the edges but fun for a beta.
Well compared to current MMOPRGs, WAR is sadly only Average right now. It has potential to be Above Average but Mythic decided to hurry up and release it early (ala Age of Conan) and it is going to pay a price for doing so.
So, hey, you guys complaining about Not Attackable issues and stuff?
You're in a Goddamn beta. What the fuck do you expect? It's getting close to release, and the guys are working hard to get their shit together; I've seen a LOT of those issues disappear over the last few days, as it's seemed as though the problems started cropping up when more and more traffic started pouring in.
So. This is an issue that has to do with their servers being tested for the first time. This is why betas exist. If you're going to bitch about issues that are common in betas when you're in a Goddamn beta then wait for release and shut the fuck up until they've had a bit to figure their high-traffic mojo out.
Also, play in the Dwarf area. I never have problems there. High Elf and Dark Elf seems the worst for not-attackable/broken PQ stuff, and Empire is generally very good, with occasional problems but nothing awful.
To make things clear, the game likes my hardware setup a lot. I've crashed three times since I got in closed beta a few months back.
And it begins another game in the flavor of the month MMO story begins......seriously do MMOs even require you to think anymore? or is just as bad as AOC was. Level based (hmmm not interested) , class restrictions (not interested) loot be all and uber raid gear? ( definetely not interested) is it FFA PVP, no ? (not interested)
This game doesnt offer anything new to the table just the same ol rehash of other games particularly 2 comes to mind...
I'll hear the blah blaH BLAH, flames but really Im entitle to my own opinion if you cant stomach it then really take a break from MMOs and go back to reality and get laid.....

Name another game with an RvR focus like war, with ease of entry into RvR from the start of playing?
Ok DAoC but they messed up that game a while ago forcing you to pve.
So as i see it, right now WAR is the only mmo in the class of RvR mmo's
All other RvR mmo's out there force you to pve in order to have the slightest bit of fun.
So if war is a rehashed copy of all the other games out there then all side scrolling games are just copys of mario brothers?
I dont expect everyone to get into WAR and love it but some of the trash talking i see about WAR make no sense, its like people trying war out are only doing the first few quests and deciding that the rest of the content isnt worth trying out.
I guess some people will never be happy with any mmo ever, its kind of sad, im just glad that i finally found a game that i want to stick with.
I just have one question for the people who didnt like warhammer, do you not like pvp? if you do whats a better RvR mmo in your opinion...im curious

You really have some issue dont ya? Ok, i get it..your not going to play, I got no problem with that.
When I said i had "time", i meant virtual time, i got no RL "time" for you.

A few bugs here and there (for some reason I CTD when entering Bright Wizard College but relog just fine) some slight animation issues with PvE mobs and that's about it.
Otherwise it is a total blast. Can't wait to get my old guild in so we can do some serious 6-man open RvRing!

well its an mmo so it cant really change a vast amount from other mmorpg.
like fps/rpg/rts/ ect ect...dont really change that mush from one another..

Well aren't YOU just Mr. Mary Sunshine? I don't think I've seen that much cussing in a single post for a LONG time. And is the "GD" word ABSOLUTELY necessary for you to communicate? But I digress......
The name of the OP's original post is "what do you think so far," so I'm not sure how you get off on bashing people for mentioning what they THINK about anything in the OPEN beta, including bugs and crashes, or whatever ELSE they want to comment on. They were asked.
Now...regarding the "it's a beta" comment. Well....technically it's a TYPE of beta, yes, however....the people that are in the OPEN beta PAID to get in to it. I pre-ordered and spent 50 USD. Some people just subscribed to Fileplanet, but that still has a cost. So I think people expect the game to be PRETTY CLOSE to polished by the end of an Open Beta. We're not beta testers here. We're people who have paid, essentially, to have a peek, and POSSIBLY help catch a few minor leftover bugs, but seriously.....open beta should be fairly polished.
I guess the game REALLY likes MY hardware, because I haven't had any crashes from Preview Weekend on through the present. I HAVE had the "non-attackable bug"....a LOT. However.....that has been fixed from what I can see at this point, and it was actually addressed IN the most recent patch notes.
The most positive thing I can say regarding the game's technical issues, is that the DO seem to be addressing them, if people will take the time to read patch notes. They seem to listen to the feedback, and that's a very good thing.
Regarding my own personal opinion about "what do you think so far"......
I think the game is interesting. I absolutely LOVE the Tome of Knowledge. The scenarios are fun, the public quests are unique and enjoyable. However, I have heard a lot of people saying "ahhhh, no more grinding for gear," and I wonder if they're playing the same game I've been playing. Maybe it's just me...but now I find myself grinding for renown rank (not so different from any other kind of grinding for gear upgrades). I feel like....well....it's a good game. It's an MMO. If you don't like ANY of the present MMOs on the market, you're not likely to like this either. It still has the same basic MMO elements. I think some people just probably shouldn't play MMOs, because most of their complaints are things that are found in pretty much ANY MMO.
I will play WAR for the first month. After that, I'll have to decide whether I will renew my subscription. I'm someone who has no problem playing more than ONE MMO though, so, at least for me, I'm not trying to make the decision "is it better than WoW", "is it better than EVE", is it better than EQ2"? I play all of those games and THEN some. As it stands right NOW.....WAR isn't a game breaker for me with ANY other MMO I'm playing, but it doesn't totally SUCK, either.
As I've said in other posts....I'm pretty ambivalent about it.

Yet it still doesn't have that exciting feeling that I remember when I first started playing other MMOs. I just can't quite put my finger on WHAT, exactly, that it lacks. O.o It doesn't suck. It just doesn't "PWN" either.
I feel....ambivalent.
I myself am happy because i HATE crafting and hate when it s literally needed in a MMO to compete or at least know someone that is one.
yeah. only problem iv had with scenarios atm is the lack of team work. maybe ts just my bad luck..
You have to start cracking some heads and explain things.
It's OK, but doesn't blow me away. I'll likely stick around and play it for a while, but it won't take much to pull me away.
Gonna Quit wow now, and go WAR Fulltime..
after trying all classes, i most likely gonna play Witch hunter & Engineer.
givinging it a 9/10 "sence no game is perfect."
Want to play: Lego Universe
Game is good, rough around the edges but fun for a beta.
so after a few days how are peoples vies now.
personally its gotten a tad boring. need a few more scenarios imo..:(

When I said i had "time", i meant virtual time, i got no RL "time" for you.
gret
Well this genre isnt for you. Go play wii m8.
It is teh awesomez.

I voted average. Take care of these two facets for me and I will give it above average.
1) Improve PC (player character) models/graphics/animations...or AT LEAST the faces
2) Skill lag (?) is killing me. It makes casters not fluid and harder to play.
If unbalanced RvR is your thing, WAR seems fine. Just a rehashed DAOC, almost the same graphics quality frankly.
If non-stop meaningless PvP isn't your thing, look elsewhere.
