LOTRO seriously needs to do something about the horrible character models.

Well everyone knows that everythign is pink and rosy in fanboys world. As far as no one complains about LOTR well once again... everything is fine in a fanboys world.

If you respect other people opinion so much you wouldn't be that sarcastic now would you? Moreover after reading your replies it seems you are the one who is trying to put it forward as FACTS.

Pictures speak thousand words and horrible armor and models in LOTR speak for themselves.

Agreed. The above armor pics for MoM are horrible. Turbine has made no progress on these visuals.

What a horrible disservice to Tolkien's lore or even any of the artists who have done illustrations in the past.

Ah, the wonderful discussions of the new improved modern MMORPG.com! SO much better than the old, stinky mmorpg.com when the forums were actually allowed to talk in.

Yes, I see how the depth of discussion such as these will bend and mold the mmos of the future, being a power to be reckoned with in the evolution of the genre.

    "Grapx suxxors!"

    "Naha, don't! L2noBnoob,plz!"

I am glad they changed the rules to "Only moderators are allowed a serious opinion other than overlly positive" This works great!

Carry on, please. I am sure you are making SUCH a difference!

When i played lotro (mid 2007) the character movement was not smooth which spoilt the gameplay for me, a number 1 factor to  a successful mmo (imo) is smooth movement, otherwise it feels less realistic and gets annoying. but who knows, that  was over a year ago so they may have sorted that out now. you tell me?

I can't answer your question tommy as I only have been playing for 6 months. I personally do not have any problem with the animations.

Most of the armour (especially the helmets) does not look good at all. Most of the hairdos look pretty bad as well. (I say most for both because there are some that actually look good, if not at least decent). I see what people say about the models and though they are not great, they arent terrible and they dont bother me.

(MMORPG...the screenshot link killer...argh...anyways, here is a direct link to a badly made model

    Worthplaying

A perfect example of the issues with the LOTRO models.

This is a brand new screen from MoM. Look at the Elf and the contorted posture, with the hooked at the hip action figure lego twist.

This is in no way possible, and thanks to the knees being misplaced also looks goofy.

Overall a disappointing visual for the models.

Save for the helmets (it's always a struggle to find a decent looking hat or helmet, their helmet designer seems to be on crack) I've always thought that the armor in LoTRO looks pretty good.  More like historical armor and clothing than most MMOs.  I would put LoTRO in my personal top five MMOs for armor aesthetics, easily.

The MoM armors looks like it's getting away from the core aesthetic, but I personally don't mind.  I have to agree that the Captain armor is a bit over the top for LoTRO (the helmet especially, of course).  However the rest of those sets look pretty good to me.  Even the Captain armor might look good dyed a different color, and with a less stupid helmet.

Off the top of my head, the only games I can think of where I was consistently more happy with how my toons look than in LoTRO are ones where I got to design my final appearance from scratch on the chracter creation screen: CoH and PSO come to mind.   EQ II has a few nice sets of armor, and a lot of horrid ones.  The blackened iron plate is one of the better looking sets I've ever worn in any MMO, very nice.  Google it sometime.  The baby blue pajamas you get for doing all the 1-20 quests in Kunark is an embarresment to whoever designed them.  I like the visual aesthetics of WAR a lot becuase I grew up- playing the minatures game.  I also like the armor designs in GW a lot.

However apart from those, I generally don't feel like I'm styling nearly as hard as I do in LoTRO in most MMOs.  I have a maxed out tailor that can make damn near any leather, cloth, or appearance slot item in the game.  Having three different visual styles to choose from for every armor set  makes a big difference, I wish more MMOs would do something like that.  I'm also working up a metalsmith to round out my options.

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

1 word - cloaks. Lotro has the most beautiful cloaks that I have ever seen in a game. Couple that with the way they flow and move in the wind and that is all I really care about since 99% of the time I am viewing my char from the upper rear. Never cared for the head gear myself, I use decorative circlets on all my chars. Also Lotro has what 15 or 16 different dye colors now. Add in that you can wear 3 completly different outfits at the same time and choose any of the three to be seen and I have zero problems with the characters.

@ getalife - Yes life is all warm and rosy inside LoTRO. Devs who are not only competant but are treat  their customers and fans with respect. Great graphics and balanced classes, tons of content already and a huge expansion coming out next month. A good population already that is steadily increasing. All the things that certain other MMO's fans only wish they had in other words.

@openedge -hows AoC coming along for you?

    Yup...that is mighty realistic...

Fun...and realistic (not sure what that has to do with unrealistic LOTRO models...because AoC has some of the best models in the genre right now)

The low-level stuff looked clumsy and the higher stuff is nothing spectacular (even though some of it is fun to wear) To be honest it does not bother me much , I have loads of fun with this game from the serious raids to the not so serious "let's go earn our rabbit masks" raids!.

Surely the enjoyment of the game is what it is all about?

You know what the problem is? Lotro's design. It's is designed like WoW, being gear based. But when you look at the lotr lore, armours were crappy, usually made of leather, and only kings etc. had decent armour. And a gear based game with leather armour would just be... even more boring, so they had to add flashy armours. The armours aren't bad, they just don't fit lotr...

You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.

I tend to agree to some degree there.

And everyone who is making jokes about WoW's exagerated graphics and then praising LOTRO's is just weird to me hehe. Looking at some of the screenshots in this thread i could not see that much a difference in the degree of exageration - and lotro is still young... this will continue.

worse then the looks are the animations of the models tho especially the ordinary animations when running, riding and crafting. Maybe im still not used to the oh so modern 3rd person view ;)

because I remember the cloaks in AoC looked like triangular pieces of  3/4 inch plywood sticking out behind the characters LOL.. Those boys in Cimmeria need to lay off the starch in the laundry a bit. LOL Yeah that AoC is real realistic, like running around in FPS or a rat in maze.

Of course with AoC the pixilated boobies and gallons of blood splashing on the screen like a bad horror flick make it all worthwhile for some people. The heck with content when you can have all that right

Fanbois, feel free to tell me how great this armor looks, I mean... am I the only one that understands that this shit is PAINTED on he body model? Horrible design, and this will never change... the only thing you are going to see in MoM are awful bodypainted reskins... See all the awful armor here:

    http://www.northshield.co.uk/LOTRO/Armour.htm

Both of the above images look ridiculous, but atleast the one on the right has a 'package'.  I think it's wierd that male avatars have zero groin bulge.  If women get breast sliders men should get groin sliders.  LOL...'groin slider'.  That sounds funny, but you get my point, no pun intended.

I agree the avatars are off.  It is something I have commented on before.  The faces don't look right for a number of reasons.  I think the comments about proportion and the sprayed on armor are also part of the problem.  Hair styles suck.  More long flowing beautiful hairstyles please.  Animations could definitely be better as well.

As far as who has done it better, I liked SWG's character customization.  I was very happy with my female and male human avatars.  Also AOC had some nice looking characters as well, and with shader 3.0 they looked downright gorgeous.

  • TerranahTerranah Member UncommonPosts: 3,575

Actually I was just revisiting my SWG pictures.  There were some problems there too, it wasn't all perfect, but I was happy with it.

Also I think my Vanguard avatar is nicer looking than my LOTRO avatar.  But many of the Vangaurd avatars are disappointing as well.

  • JackdogJackdog Member UncommonPosts: 6,321

I really don't get why people get so wrapped up in how their avatars face looks. 99% 0f my time ingame is spent looking at my characters back, or at his morale ( health) bar, or at a mob. Just speaking for myself of course but good interesting and balanced game play with plenty of end game options is my number one concern, good scenery is second in my list of wants, and having the company treat me with a bit of respect is third and LoTRO satisfies all of those needs quite well thank you very much :)

For those who are all wrapped up in character appearance I suggest this

    Nice Jaggies btw..

Lets see...some random guys blog, has AA off, shaders off and you pick on jaggies?

Try with AA on and Shaders on (I think I remember you getting whiny over a post where someone used a low res image to represent the ugly characters in LOTRO)

Real Armor and Real Faces in AoC

Realistic visuals based on the setting of the character

Oh, and video...noting the realistic sway of cloaks in AoC

I will take the REAL characters of Conan...

    Thanks

  • BesCirgaBesCirga Member Posts: 806

Yes, I agree. Avatar to avatar comparison between Lotro and AoC, AoC wins. Why shouldn't they? Pretty avatar graphics is all conan is, nothing more.

I also thought the AoC video showing the cloaks in slow motion looked decent, but speed that up and it will look very clunky. Just look at the cloak when you run, it looks like a 2x4 swinging from side to side. Awful. Cloak wise, Lotro wins hands down.

Personally, I think the Lotro avatars looks ok, nothing special. Only thing I miss is special animations for spear, but I guess thats coming in MoM - with the warden. (can anyone confirm this?)
