I was thinking on how MMOs are too easy, at least for my tastes, and wanted to try to come up with a hypothetical mmo design outline (for fun), that is difficult to the EXTREME. and see what kind of perspective it gives to todays titles. I imagine alot of the most difficult games will be very old but I'd like to see what you guys think.
What is the most difficult game you have beaten? And what made it so hard? No side quests or post-game, just to beat the game, see the ending, etc. Difficulty due to crashes doesnt count =P (ATHENA NES)
Mine is probably aargon, a laser light puzzle game. Some of the more difficult stages took me days to figure out. It is hard because you have to look so far ahead to see the solution

Shadow of The Beast.
The puzzles are not exacly hard, but it is almost impossible to survive and finish the story.

Pong
But after I master it, any other game was cake..............
The original Metroid.
Honorable mention goes to Altered Beast on the Genesis.
The Last V8 --> www.youtube.com/watch
no i havent beaten it
Ikaruga
ninja gaiden
blaster master was also nasty, but any game you can simply continue in should be eliminated. ::metroid, i mean cmon::
The newer generation of rogue-likes such as nethack.
Castlevania 2: Simons Quest /shutter
or... the first Adventure Island, lotta NES games were damn hard.
Ninja Gaiden, FF Tactics
NES Double Dragon Series. I have yet to beat any of the three. Every few months, my cousin and I break out the NES and play some old school games. We have tried numerous times to beat DD, but no luck thusfar.
Playing - Minecraft, 7 Days To Die, Darkfall:ROA, Path of Exile
Waiting for -
Nocturne, not only was the game hard, it had the most awkward camera system I've ever experienced in any game up to that point. It made game play frustrating and almost vomit inducing. It did have this kinda cool/creepy Blair Witch Project type of feel to it, and at the time graphics were top notch. But that were the only good qualities to that game.
I thought the original Ultima was pretty rediculous. If you didnt keep up in that game and actually draw out maps of dungeons you were doomed. Also Hydlid if anyone remembers those old school games.
It's a toss up between the first Mega Man and Contra for the NES.
I wanna be the guy (The Move: The Game)
E.T - for the Atari 2600
i still have this game and console.. and i still dont understand it
Ghosts and Goblins
Through the fire and flames on expert, gh3.......
Altered Beast; Sega Megadrive

The original Might and Magic. Never did finish that game.
It's a tie for me...
X-COM UFO Defense
X-COM Terror from the Deep
It was hard because it required a lot of patience. On those old computers we used to play these games on, it was SOOOO slow; and it was just difficult besides that.

This is his story....
Some of Infocoms text based Adventure games.
Cant remember any of the titles (its been a while) but they would make your head explode !
Ninja Gaiden sigma- never died so many times in my life.
FF tactics- I could lose a match even before my first move.
House of dead 2 (arcade)- Spent a fortune in quarters determined to beat it with my cousin.
One game comes to mind from the old Megadrive days called "Corporation"
It was a sort of futuristic corridor crawling rpg. Not sure if it was so hard just because i didn't understand it. But yeah, i seem to remember the console getting very close to sailing out of my bedroom window.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the original NES. It was widely believed that the game didn't even contain a second level, though I myself can debunk that rumor. Nobody I am aware of has ever beaten it.
