So apparently, SWTOR will have a microtransaction model.

Meh. It seems more and more like they are ripping out everything that makes an MMO an MMO (except for that cash-flow).

O.M.G.
Well this sucks
EDIT: Well, now that the shock has worn off, it depends on what's going to be in the cash shop...
Well its Electronic Arts, not much surprise there.
I'd like a lot more details on this but it sounds like pretty crappy news...
BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.
Well, RIP SW:TOR. Was looking forward to this game just because I love Star Wars so much, but I can't say my hopes were incredibly high. Oh well, now I don't have to follow this game.
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
So is this like the old days of AOL where you pay for time by the hour? Also item shops? WTF? lol Isn't this what Smed just did with EQ2 Eq1? Well I guess if it's free you will see shit loads of people playing it, but whether they will actually stay playing it is another story.
Ditto. Not jumping ship just quite yet..........gotta admit it's getting harder and harder not to though. They (EA/Bioware/LucasArts...someone) really need to give a bit more concrete info on this now that the info (or a vague double speak blurb) is out there.
I just completely lost all interest in this MMO.
Microtransactions are fine, but only in games that are free to play.
If SWTOR has a monthly subscription fee, I will most definitly pass on that one.
I think they mean Pay-as-you-go, pay for content.
Lame.
I don't even know what the hell they were trying to say in this article.
- "The recent launch of Warhammer [Online] is a great example of that."
Warhammer is subscription based.
I think the comments from the Blizzard crew is starting to make more sense when they said the game will be successful, but the company needs to brace itself for player opinion. So far, Bioware has shown they don't get the MMO industry at large. This statement has nothing to do with SWG by the way. But it sounds like a subscription with a microtransaction model, mixed with a single player game, next to? So pay for the box, play the game, subscribe to the game to keep playing, then micro-transaction to keep up?
What's next? A card game?
Played (more than a month): SWG, Second Life, Tabula Rasa, Lineage 2, Everquest 2, EvE, MxO, Ryzom.
Tried: WoW, Shadowbane, Anarchy Online, Everquest, WWII Online, Planetside
Beta: Lotro, Tabula Rasa, WAR.
If it has a monthly fee, I would be more apt to play it. If it mixes a monthly fee with a microtranction system, just simply no. George Lucas, a man who has not had an original idea since 1981, has made quite enough money from my childhood obsession.

crappy WoW like graphics and now RMT ... lol glad i barely waste any time or effort on this game.
Thats harsh.. lol
I did as well, guess I'll never have another Star Wars MMO to play.
I had the impression there would be no monthly fee
www.massively.com/2008/12/09/star-wars-the-old-republic-to-be-microtransaction-based/
EA has announced that Star Wars: The Old Republic will not be subscription-based.
Instead, the title will be gain revenue from a microtransactional model. Shacknews reports this surprising tidbit from a conference call held by the mega-publisher earlier today. Said CEO John Riccitiello, "The Star Wars online MMO [is a] mid-session game, microtransaction-based. You'll be hearing more about those in the February [conference] call."
EQ2 fan sites
Exactly what he said......
The only MMO I WAS looking forward to...looks like my MMO hobby is comming to an end...
I'll reserve judgement.
If I can play all the content I want for less than $15, that's cool. Otherwise I won't play.
Pfft I lost all interest in this game when I saw the first screenshots. No one puts that much detail into Alpha graphics just to change them later on. I just absolutely hate the style they chose. Really low. I guess I'll check back every once in a while to see if gameplay possibly Wows be enough to try it out, but I have little hope there.
Great, a game I can add to the "don't try because the dumbfuck with the most money wins," list. Thanks Bioware
I mean no offense to the MMORPG.com community. But I am going to be blunt..really blunt.
I knew Lucas Arts would screw this up. Good job idiots.
The term "sell out" comes to mind for BioWare. World of Warcraft has 11 million players because they have integrity for the community of gamers. Do you think you could learn that? Mr. Lucas all your indie blood has been sucked up by the bastards you put in charge of your game division. They are out of touch with the North American and European MMORPG market. They are idiots.
Bio Ware, EA, LA- sorry...but no thanks...Pass. I am so ashamed of BioWare. Lucas Arts can kiss my ass. And EA is a joke. You were all right about the merger. You were all right. Screw Star Wars for good.
I mean no offense to the MMORPG.com community.
None taken.
And with the news of microtransactions... I'm out.
EA... oh EA... when will you learn?
