That being said, sadly, Vanguard is one of the few games on the market, if not the only one currently out at the moment, that actually has more to it than
Step 1: Get gear
Step 2:
Step 3: Get more gear.
The mounts, the crafting system, diplomacy, an actual non-instanced housing system. Even if only at a basic level, its still miles ahead of the gear grind that MMOs have become. It's the only game I can think of off hand that manages to follow the idea of a "virtual world" rather than a progressive gear grind.

So after one year you did find out that you didnt like the game. What I can understand about your post is that you have managed to done alot in the game and when you have done that kind of stuff like getting legendery items then you have put alot of work in a simple game and probally had some fun while doing the tasks. I do agree that VG has alot of flaws and that SOE is not making the best of the situation. But what are they supposed to do? Put alot of money into a product that most pepole dont want to play.... I believe the game could have been so much better, but I do find it good as an causal player that take the game for what it is.
MMO's have layers and VG is no exception, some like to peel away at those layers until there is nothing left and then exclaim in a thunderous voice "I told you so!"
If i was to take -any- mmo and start peeling away the layers, i could find fault.
Does VG have it's problems? oh, no doubt...quite a few to be honest but it also has areas in which it shines.
For me it was the community, now of course every MMO will have it's share of idiots, but VG has a pretty decent community provided you're not spamming /local with nonsense...it usually falls into two categories, low-key or discussion...yes, sometimes it can get out of hand, but not as much as other MMO's i've been in.
You should never ever bother with any game because one day you'll find out that you don't enjoy them anymore. So why even start to play any game at all?
Meh, if one enjoys a game for a period of time be happy for that, that you have had something that was fun to do. If you don't like it don't play it, even more so, don't play it for full year.
I don't get the Vanguard hate on this site - other than the fact mmorpg.com popped up after MMORPG's turned into linear MMO's.
Vanguard has it's issues - but I keep coming back and it keeps getting better. My Guild hall is amazing - nothing like a shanty as someone explained about their house. I can't imagine returning to eq2 or another game for that matter, they keep falling short.
The population may not be huge - but on and off again it has it's moments. And I have never had much issue finding groups, guild or Pug's. 2 years in I still can find HL, URT, Trengals, Wardship, CIS, etc for my characters and alts made in the last 6 months. I don't know any game on the market other than Vanguard that can say newbie zones and questlines are not empty. Maybe it is just Seradon *shrug* But I have played all the major mmo's at one point and most couldn't say there was population for questlines like these 4 months in.
I find more often than not people in a dungeon my group wants to be in, or competition for overland mobs. And once you hit later levels there is plenty going on.
I think Vanguard mantains this because it isn't just a level grind. Some people trade up all spheres, some like to explore half the time with xp turned off, and some def raid every night of the week. With that variety you see people doing content at all levels - this has been my experience within the last maybe 6 months of returning (with minor leaves for AOC, Warhammer -to return). Yes its a huge world and yeah people are spread out, or its slow at off peak times - but what game isn't.
I think we have seen great fixes and additions. This game is almost to the point of what was promised and is the only answer at the moment for classic MMORPG players in terms of non-linear play, as far as I'm concerned and my experience allows me to judge =P
Its turned into a pretty decent game and looks like Sony will continue to support it. Don't be surprised to see a new expansion in the not to distant future.
I believe the latest Dev Q&A thread on the offiical forums clearly stated that there are currently no plans for an expansion at all.

I think it is a pretty decent game also. But I don't think SoE is gonna do an expansion. I mean historically they only do expansions for games they have developed...
That said with the stuff in the last year that we have seen done to VG it is like we got a free expansion. It will be even more interesting to see what they do in the coming year. A lot of last year was bug fixing and performance. Now that this is out of the way I know that Silias want's to do a lot of interesting content. If SoE doesn't want to bundle it up and sell it as an expansion I guess thats ok.

Actually there were two podcasts on this. The first one Silias said that they would like to do an expansion next year. Then the forums heated up that he was hinting at an upcoming expansion next year. So in the following podcast he said he was not hinting and that there were no current plans for an expansion.

Well said and 100% on track with what I've seen. A lot of people were upset about VG at release and we all had a lot of expectations and hopes. As we can see with SWG people like to carry a torch of hate around for years.
The other night when I was in vanguard there were some people obviously using the free return to get in chat and just carry on about how vanguard sucks and darkfall is the second coming. Thank god for /ignore.
As you say you gotta play vanguard a bit till you get into the levels where people group and then you will see a lot more people. But the spread out starting areas definitly give the starting player the impression that nobody is playing. Kinda ironic people think this when there are as many people on the server as there are in many other games.
Thank you. I totally agree on population seeming thin at first due to so many starting areas.
This was true of Everquest as well. I remember thinking well there is like 6 people playing this game - then moving from nek forest to EC - and seeing the chat log just zip down as people tried to sell items at the tunnell.... ahh good old player run economy
I think it is sad this has become such a pin point issue for people - I loved having to figure things out , and travel around to find the hot spots in EQ. I don't get what is hard for people especially now with the Isle. After that do a google search if exploring is too hard to see where people go, shout in-game, use the rift way to get there. And boom you have found a quest hub full of solo and groupable quests, dungeons etc.
I'm 25 and I feel like an old fart - thinking about having to draw my own maps in eq. And then I play a game like WoW or Warhammer or Aoc, and I get a better picture why people are used to so much hand holding
And I also agree to whoever posted about content updates being free content. VG wasn't really designed for expansions, this has been said a lot. It is a big world with areas yet to be used, which eventually will have content piped in - planned for so many years duration of additions. And that is what they are doing.
We just got a massive update - right on the heels of several other additions. All free. Call it an expansion if you like =P
I understand that there have been some updates to the game, but honestly, doesn't the majority of subscription based MMOs do the same? And offer paid expansions as well? Look at EQ, EQII, LOTRO, etc. All give out free updates and all also develop paid expansions.
The reason VG isn't doing a paid expansion has nothing at all to do with world design. The reason is they have a TINY dev team and they just don't have the time or resources to get the job done.
Don't get me wrong... I really enjoyed most of my time in VG, but go look at some of the dev Q&A posts. I'd say 2/3rds or more of all the requests made by players are answered with "we don't have the time" or "Our team is too small to get it done" or "We'd like to do it, but just don't have the resources."
Even though SOE saved the game from the chopping block, they're also slowly strangling the life out of the game by ignoring it. SOE simply does not take VG seriously and it shows.
because at the end of the free trial you will come to realise a few things: - SOE does not care enough about the game to throw more recources, or plan for any expansions. Expect zilch in the future bar a few world events here and there,... and another flying mount!!!! wooow - Once you hit 50 you, like I, will feel extremely disappointed bout what it 'COULD' have been. In the end. Welcome to Planetside 2.0, Not going to say more but you should go waste that month on your free trial yourself and find out

The additions are beyond most games free additions. I was very critical of this game and still am, and have been known to be a complete downer at times. But I am willing to give them credit.
In the last couple of months we have gotten a new FFA PvP Arena, loads of higher end content group/raid (SOD, KDQ, Bridge of Destiny, Garazumet), class race combos updated, Galleons, two good holiday events. Soon to be another high end addition with the Pantheon.
These are not little updates or minor fixes. I have played over a dozen mmo's at this point including those you mention, and I have never seen content of this size ever given for free.
They pretty much took most of my big complaints with the game and knocked them off the list over the last couple months. And again provided for free - this would have been an expansion or at least adventure packs in other games.
I think they are trying to make it right with the people that have played the game this long - which is appreciated.
I really don't see how their technology would jive with an expansion. But I'll take the near equivalent of one via free updates. It is still more content than most people are going to ever play through, including with a couple alts or so - and there is more on the way. Pantheon will be huge.
Here's my perspective as someone who has played since release and has two level 50 characters.
Right now, there is more to do than I can possibly hope to accomplish. Yes, at one time a couple months ago level 50s had basically seen and done it all... at least in the adventuring sphere. But not anymore.
I have most of Shores of Darkness ahead of me. There are many quests here I want to complete and I do want to progress through the ranks for the learned abilities and in some cases the gear enhancements.
We still have not conquered APW and are currently working on how to get by the Core.
I'm still working on my temple quests for the Tet faction gear.
I haven't even had time to set foot in Bridge of Destiny yet.
I'm working on the Griffon Quest with the 2nd level 50 with guildies and friends.
I still need the final upgrade to my Griffon on my primary toon.
I am still progressing through the New Targonor House quests and earning my diplomatic titles and purchashing land deeds... I'm half done. Once I complete the house quests, I want to return to completing Writs, earning gems and facets and crafting more diplo gear.
We are planning to jump into the Isle of Gaz within a week or two, but haven't stepped foot there yet.
My main is crafting level 13 and I want to level up as I enjoy crafting and want to be eligible for the 50/50/50 quests.
Every now and then we form up swat teams and hit the PvP arena, a great change of pace and I want to get good enough to build my Infamy.
I'm respec'ing the gear on both my main and my alt for certain fights in APW. Specially managing down my Spell Damage focus on my Psi and building around Crit Chance rating on my Bloodmage. Gear is anything but sequential in VG, there are many, many choices to make.
Fishing is hopelessly addicting. I really enjoy taking my caravel out to a deep sea area with a few friends and see what we can pull in. Along with learning some techniques so I can catch bigger fish.
I probably play more than I should, and everytime I log in I get the feeling of being overwhelmed with all the things I want to do. And beyond that, there are all the things my guildies, friends and complete strangers want to accomplish with some help. There are also some alts that I really enjoy playing but have no time to do so.

A bit off topic but thought I would ask anyway,I am going back but I am going to start again from level 1,is there anyway I can change the ownership of my house?
I have a level 45 shammy I havent played in sometime(I payed a year of fee's before I left 4 months ago),I have always wanted to play a disciple and am going to start with him and was wondering if I can change the rights to my house from my shammy to my disciple?
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"
see you soon Torak . A bit off topic but thought I would ask anyway,I am going back but I am going to start again from level 1,is there anyway I can change the ownership of my house? Well I don't see a way to change ownership but you can only own one house per account so all your toons on the same account should be owners by default.
Look in your abilities, you should have a house recall icon on your new guy.

If i was to take -any- mmo and start peeling away the layers, i could find fault.
Does VG have it's problems? oh, no doubt...quite a few to be honest but it also has areas in which it shines.
For me it was the community, now of course every MMO will have it's share of idiots, but VG has a pretty decent community provided you're not spamming /local with nonsense...it usually falls into two categories, low-key or discussion...yes, sometimes it can get out of hand, but not as much as other MMO's i've been in.
so yeah..my two cents on the subject.
If it took 1 year for you to realize that the game is a PoS it cant be so bad.
Nowadays I buy games, start playing and Im bored after like 2 weeks.
I think the last posts is quite correct.
I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.
"You have the right not to be killed"

I believe the latest Dev Q&A thread on the offiical forums clearly stated that there are currently no plans for an expansion at all.

Wow, you have no idea do you?
Wow man,
We should sticky your reply.
see you soon Torak .
A bit off topic but thought I would ask anyway,I am going back but I am going to start again from level 1,is there anyway I can change the ownership of my house?
I have a level 45 shammy I havent played in sometime(I payed a year of fee's before I left 4 months ago),I have always wanted to play a disciple and am going to start with him and was wondering if I can change the rights to my house from my shammy to my disciple?
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"
http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/235780/page/8
Well I don't see a way to change ownership but you can only own one house per account so all your toons on the same account should be owners by default.
Look in your abilities, you should have a house recall icon on your new guy.
