There has never been an "Exact date for release"; however, they have been saying the game is ready for release since 2001, a beta announcement about once a year, and even a full blown guild beta, that had many guilds invited, but was canceled with out a word to any of those invited.
I am glad people are excited that there is a date, since the 2008 date has been missed, again. However asking for a previous exact date is semantics, as every single one of their announcements has been missed.
Ignoring the history of the development of this game, is fine if your excited about finally having a date, but don't expect others that do know the history to get all excited.
There has been a "beta" and "next year we launch" and "the game has been ready for retail" constantly told about this game for 10 years now.
It was told to come out in 2008:
There were also many questions on the public beta and release dates. To this I can say now, that during a planning meeting we determined that our launch date will be inside 2008, with the public beta preceding it by a few weeks. This is official and internally we're a lot more specific, but pending an announcement, we cannot say more at this time.
Again, its just part of the pattern. They said nothing about pushing it back.

Not expecting people to be all merry over a release date, heck i would not be surprised if the date is pushed back even more.
But there is a big difference in estimating release to a certain year, and setting a exact date. So ofcourse alot of people including those who have lissen to all the estimates over the year (i seen many of em myself) are gonna be happy to finally get a release date, not just another estimation. Bashing that saying this is just another estimate is false, becouse this is a exact day date. Not another we will release in 2004/5/6/7/8.
Then its also very natural to be sceptic knowing that if they have missed so many estimates before its likely theyll also miss this release date. Heck im one of those ppl, im expecting another pushback due to some unforseen complication (they are a Indie company, im sure theres stuff they can easily oversee and miss)
Im in between, happy to finally have a date, but skeptic to if they will really keep it. But ill give em a open chance to try and keep there first release date they published without bringing up all there other promises they never kept.

If the Clan Beta had been canceled that would have been at least something. The problem was they didn't even have the decency to do that. They just blantantly ignored that it had even been announced!
There was no announcement saying it was canceled.

You can't HOLD anyone to a "soon" release. But you CAN hold them to an EXACT DATE (such as Jan. 22nd)
And a funny thing about the 2005 guild beta.. The game wasn't even in alpha when they announced the beta.

"What you can look forward to in the immediate future as we move forward with our closed beta, is the beta registration process for individual players and for guilds to open up..." - Sept. 30th, 2003 forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php
"Darkfall is currently in the final stages of internal beta testing. This means that the game is being tested in-house in preparation for public playtesting. A beta registration form will become available on this website soon." - April 6th, 2004 forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php

Ya it's kind of a win-win sutation for me. If Darkfall releases I get to finally play the game I have been waiting YEARS for, good or bad, at least it will be out.
If Darkfall does not release I get to enjoy watching all of the diehard fanboys of Tasos try to backpedal their way out of the hole they dug for themselves.
They've already done it with the December open beta and release before the end of 2008 announcements that Tasos made. Those were quite enjoyable to read with such notable quotes as "No one cares", and "Tasos never actually gave a date in 2008, but he has now!", or "So what? It's only 22 days late!"
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."

Actually you cant hold them to an exact release date either. If they change their mind and push it back further what are you going to do about it? Carry on blah blah blahing on these forums thats what. Aventurine will release their product whenever they want to. They dont care what people on forums think or say. Everyones opinions on here are totally irrelevant.
We have a date. January 22nd. This is posted everywhere. There was never a date posted before, therefor, you couldn't start a count down thread to that date.
I'm still waiting on the US date countdown.
The countdown don't mean a thing to me until I hear it's release date for the U.S.!
Well as I dont live in America and this is not an American website I couldnt care less when it releases in the US
Thank you for sharing. I'll bet you feel better now that you got that off your chest. I would too if I cared where you were from or even who you are. Unfortunately, I don't. Sorry.

I understand where Neo is coming from with that quote tbh, makes a change for the N.A peeps to be complaining, normally it's us from Euroland who whine that we been left until last to get ingame at the sametime as N.A. gamers. Makes me chuckle as we always get told to deal with it and get over it ect, so it's kind of ironic that the shoes is on the other foot for a change, but hey guess what it does not really matter we will all get in when the times right.
Makes me realise how pathetic we must of sounded looking at all the moaning currently going on, it's apparent that all them people who say they are not bothered, are bothered and want this game so bad, well we will find out soon enough on the 22/01/09 and personally I really hope it does get put back another two months or even longer just to watch all the MEGA flamming that will go on every website and then after a few months things will die down again.
A few other games will come out and get flamed by the community and this moaning society which we currelty live in will again be fully fed and ready for it's next victim to suck from, I just can not get my head round why there is so much hate on gaming sites, there is just no need for it. I am suprised there are not more wars in RL tbh with all the hate in DFO threads we could fuel a few wars for sure.
We need some love and respect on these gaming sites, I find it very hard to even post on here atm so come on people lets try to be more respectful towards each other, we can get our points across without being vindictive for sure.

I think all future MMOs should do this. Secretive/shady + long development cycle with lots of setbacks + promising the perfect game means people will buy it and play it, even if it's shit in a box, just because they've been waiting so long. Then the company can be rich to make a good MMO in the future, following the same pattern of course!

I'm hoping that by the end of Jan. 5th we stop hearing the excuse:
"We don't need to know that yet."
When some posters ask about the lack of information. Down to less than 3 weeks remaining before launch... there are no more excuses for not putting out Subscription, System Requirements, Open Beta status, Free Trial status, etc.
Although I'm sure there will be plenty of apologists... even if we don't hear anything by the 23rd of January.

You are incorrect. Do you know how many beta dates were given over the 10 years this game has been in development?
Do you know how many times they have said "Oh the game is done already, we are just polishing it" since 2003 (that was the first time they said it) ?
But, buy all means, count the days. Sorry for the derail.

Remember... all quotes are from Tasos himself. Not some third party. Semantics? Sure, I suppose some could see it that way. Others though might see those quotes as a bit more. Make of it what you will.
Wow, sounds like a real trustworthy guy. No wonder so many people have a negative opinion of DF. Who can blame anyone for not believing a word Tasos says with a history like this?
Guess it depends on your definition of alpha and if you believe Tasos or not.
Here are Tasos' statements about the state of the game BEFORE the 2005 Guild Beta announcement:
"What you can look forward to in the immediate future as we move forward with our closed beta, is the beta registration process for individual players and for guilds to open up..." - Sept. 30th, 2003 forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php
"Darkfall is currently in the final stages of internal beta testing. This means that the game is being tested in-house in preparation for public playtesting. A beta registration form will become available on this website soon." - April 6th, 2004 forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php
"Darkfall is still in internal beta." - July 9, 2004 forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php
"We're preparing for beta testing as we speak; you can apply on this page of our website. It's a huge job, and we want it done right." - Nov. 11, 2005 rpgvault.ign.com/articles/671/671666p1.html

Anyone with an ounce of intelligence is very skeptical.. looking forward to doing the I told you it wouldn't release dance on 1-22-09...
When they said Jan 22, did they ever say a year? What if they just ment some Jan 22, but not 2009 or 2010!

IEDs, SAF, RPGs, & mortars. But only during breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The enemy is so poor, they have to keep day jobs
They said 2009. Strangely, Tasos didn't add "or shortly after" at the end. Maybe he is getting old and losing his elite skillz.
Sorry.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on my comment. I bet you feel better now you gave got that off your chest. I would too if I thought everyone was really interested in hearing about where I live. Fortunately I know that no-one does. I'm sorry to hear that you do.

Happy New Year and Peace to all...
Asbo

I guess that would make Tasos irrelevant as well then?
Seeing as Tasos has spent time giving opinions here... guess that includes him too.
My friend SuperD, the game has "been in beta" and "Ready for launch" from 2001.

Ha! Get your own material, ya hack!

SupderD will be making an update soon...
You are right.. 19 days remaining..
A little over two weeks..
HOWEVER!! I wouldn't go planning vacation yet..

Some of you were complaining earlier at the lack of new information on the main site but he (Tasos)does state that a new site is in development and that the lack of updates is due to the interviews he has been doing
forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php
Hmm.. that can't be.. Tasos knows no limitations.
