I don't agree with the whole niche bullsh!t, this game has mass appeal and all the anti-carebears (indifferentbears?) need to stop spouting bs (if you state a lie several times, it eventually becomes a "fact").
This game is friendly to ALL types of players, pve'rs, roleplayers, casual gamers, EVERYONE as long as they can handle risk. THATS what's so hardcore about it, that there's significant risk to being stupid and messing up.
Pve will be ALOT more interesting than in othergames, RP will be ALOT more interesting than in other games, and casuals will have ALOT more fun than in other games (they can max their first character skill in a week, and can be competitve with a decent amount of player skill, something impossible to do in any other mmo). Its just that they will have to handle the risk, the pking, that happens, and usually, if you get pked, you made a bad risk v reward decision.
We'll see in time how many people can handle risk(which will be revealed in DF's sub numbers, or in MO's if DF fails)
The only reason DF will fail is because lack of subs. Creating a niche game is a risky thing to do and could destroy a company from the start. We all have to agree that there is not too many players out there that will enjoy full loot corpse with FFA PVP centric content. It is just not that popular. What darkfall has to do is target that small percentage of a crowd and really get a lot of them. I am a fan of FFA PvP centric content. So I am really happy to see more games with full loot corpses. Makes killing someone all more worth the while.
Now should they delay this game, NO! They created this game solely around that. Which is to give freedom to the player to play whatever style they want to play. Also making the game more realistic to real life. Do you think if you killed someone in real life. There will be like some sort of protection around there body that will not allow you to loot there body. Heck no, people will strip that body clean and take everything away from that person. Its all about immersion and right now, mmo's could really use that. enought with the clones...

a game like this hasn't been seen in more than a decade, you don't know WHAT market this game will draw
(the last game that was like this (AC darktide) dealt with another generation of gamers, we have no idea how many of these WoWers will like the idea of DF, I'm a product of this generation, and thought WoW was the best (its all i knew) and when I saw DF, I thought it was all a scam b/c i didn't think that I would see a game like that in my lifetime....)
Aventurine will probably make more money making a game that challenges the status quo than to have followed it, since the current market is oversaturated with themepark mmos.
Dude, this is a niche game. It was meant to be a niche game. That means the "griefers" NEED A HOME TOO! Yes, in your eyes the game will be ruined, but "to each his own". Ever heard that phrase?
You believe griefing others is a playstyle, or simply put harassing other players for the sake of amusement?
There are many mechanics that are put in place to discourage griefing, but unlike theme park games, griefing is still possible if you can get away with it. It won't be easy but it definately won't be impossible.
It just depends on what you call griefing, if you think its dieng from someone from your race, and that person dry looting you, then yes griefing is in the game. But the fans of the game see it as kind of your fault for dying in the first place, since noobs can stand up to vets in this game, and you probably made a bad risk v reward decision if you got looted "out of nowhere" (in otherwords, you shouldn't have been walking on that street which is known to have gankers alone, or you shouldn't have been walking with armor that does not match the environment and walk where there is nothing blocking line of sight).
Dry looting allows risk v reward to be present, wheras pvp in other games has no risk, and no reward.
{ Mod Edit }
There's different definition for griefing, and lot of ways people can grief overs. I hope Darkfall has mechanics that'll prevent griefing people over and over. I thank god they didn't add tracking GUI in this game like shadowbane. Griefing ruins gameplay, and it has ruined other mmorpg before because there's some players that just want to bring unnecessary grief to other players even if they haven't done anything. There are situations were a players deserve the punishment due to their stupidity.
I hope Darkfall enables a mechanic that doesn't let you loot me.
You are being completely unreasonable. This game is not made for "you". Or those who think like you. It is made for the players who actually enjoy this type of play. And there are many who do.
That's like saying that you want to play American football but you really hope they take out tackling because it's a horrible point of gameplay.
This game is made for the hardcore players. They WON'T care about being looted because they will in turn loot other people.
Not my type fo game but I hope it's a stellar success!

Yeah, as everyone said this thread is pretty much a huge fail. Darkfall even stated "If you don't like hardcore pvp rules then don't play", so why are you here? All you carebears who don't wanna be killed and looted go somewhere else, no one cares about you here. Yes, I grief players, a lot. I have fun making other players angry, that's what made games like UO and Asherons Call fun. So if you wanna keep playing games where you're constantly constricted by stupid rules then be my guest, but please stop making retarded posts in the darkfall thread.
agreed man! i think it's fear... DF haters that i've noticed that post here are very friendly in WoW and WAR posts... and fear? Perhaps they fear loosing players to a new MMO, or any new mmo, so maybe they feel they have to badger and harrass in any new MMO forum that arrises to feel secure that their game won't go the way of the dinosaur when something new comes out.
You're certainly not talking about me. I haven't played WAR since the month it was released; I cancelled for several reasons, some of them technical (constant crashes to desktop), and some having to do with the damn instancing of everything, the lack of a cohesive universe, the absence of a community, and the complete absence of depth for a game supposedly revolving around PvP -- it was just PvP for PvP's sake.
As for WoW, I'm subscribed, but there are many elements I despise about it -- its ego-stroking instant-gratification claptrap, its level-based imbalances, its rat race for gear once you hit 80, and the complete impossibility to make an impact upon a game world which Blizzard wants to maintain in a stifling state of status quo, turning those "contested territories" (I play on a PvP server) into an utter joke.
But I sure know the perils awaiting Darkfall. Immature gamers whose sole purpose is to find a new exploit. Large professional guilds jumping in from day one, turning the political and military game into a no-brainer as predictable as a bad whodunit. A different sort of instant gratification, even baser than WoW's because it's largely based on grief, and more dangerous long-term because it drives away players and sickeningly takes pride in it.
That's why I oppose a large chunk of the Darkfall community -- because their actions would turn Darkfall and any other "old school" game which precisely seeks to avoid the WoW model into a dead game. And that then they wouldn't give a damn about it -- they'd be gone several months before the plug is pulled on the wasteland of a server they used to play on.

Otherwise some might accuse you of: "spouting bs"
ugh its there, dammit i forgot where though, its recent enough that I saw it happen (i joined in october) hmm i'll get back to you on it, but its there (maybe its in the mmorpg.com interview... hmmm)

I don't think that's true at all. At least in the sense you are putting it. Lineage 2 has a die hard community that pretty much wages war on each other and they have been there for years. Archlord now has a more hardcore pvp server to the extreme delight of it's playerbase.
It's ok to have a game like this. Not everything has to cater to everybody.

Aventurine will probably make more money making a game that challenges the status quo than to have followed it, since the current market is oversaturated with themepark mmos.
Even WAR was defeated by WoW.
You have no clue what you are talking. I know exactly what market Adventurine is trying to target. Everyone else knows this, that is why we call it a niche game cause they are targeting a specific crowd. This is not going to be a AAA mmo game period. If you want to agrue about that than go ahead but you will lose.
The current state Darkfall is heading isn't very promising due to unanswered questions regarding the game perior 3 weeks to launch, corpses looting which hasn't been taken out yet, and overall there isn't a NA release date. Adventurine isn't prepared and neither is Darkfall, and I predict Darkfall failing miseribly (Corpse looting is the main reason to blame). I'd prefer if they got a NA publisher, and fix/polish the game 3 months more. Beside the game itself, I hope Adventuine removes corpse looting from the game. That mechanic is evil and favored by griefers. The'll be the main death of Darkfall - corpses looting. That gameplay almost destroyed UO because griefers killed newbies and killed fellow players that just wanted to enjoy the game. I hope Adventurine makes the right decision or all is lost!
Honestly why do you care if there is Corpse looting.... It is a core game mechanic in FFA PvP World..
There are plenty of quality PVE games without corpse looting mechanics in them for you to choose from..
Look to the left an entire list of games without griefers..
without corpse looting..
Do you really believe that Darkfall posses some ground breaking PVE mechanic that you cant live without or havent seen before.. Ill answer for you ... NO...
If what you are looking for in a game cant be found to the left you wont find it in Darkfall
So Leave Darkfall alone and choose a game that more suits your playstyle...
Adventurine was gambling when they announced a release date. We know they were never the most reliable, but up until lately they have only given approximate release seasons >_<. When they did this it was kind of implied that it was concrete. I'll admit it seems as though they aren't ready, but they are going to piss the leaving hell out of alot of people if they take back their date. Hoepfully they are ready. If they aren't they face the options of realsing an unfinished game or dissapointing their loyal followers again. I remeber in 2007 I was still thinking, maybe i won't buy that game, Darkfall is just around the bend. Nobody is waiting for them anymore...really. If somone sees a new game they may get hooked on it and forget about Darkfall whenever it is they decide to release it. I think for this reason it will be released, but maybe thats just wishful thinking.

This niche "we don't care about the mass market, this game isn't for them" BS isn't something that was made by fans or detractors of the game. That's an internally produced monologue that is evident in nearly every interview the company has done since announcing closed beta in September of 2003. In short, you can blame Aventurine.
The blind optimism is refreshing though. Stating that the game is friendly to all types AND it has very hardcore risks... irony, thy name is Rageagainst.
It appeals to everyone- just as long as they're into hardcore pvp and this kind of combat! It's like there are two factions warring inside of you.

I agree there does need to be some risk vs. reward. But tell me, other than the bank will there be a way to be safe if one so chose? Say I'm an explorer, but not Indiana Jones. Say I want to see the sights because I want to see them, and I don't care much for the "risk" involved when I walk on a freakin road. What if I walk on a road and get jumped by 4 people? What if I go through the woods and get jumped by other people? Is that really bad decision making on my part? What if I grew wings and flew above them, that seems like the only option.
100% all the time risk gets old. You're going to get sick of always looking over your shoulder to go to the bathroom (just an expression you understand). If you don't, you're part of a small group...AKA a NICHE.
-------------------------------------- A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

The funny thing is, even griefers get sick of being griefed. To call Darkfall a niche game for griefers is a stretch. Griefers can't STAND getting griefed themselves...probably less so than the average player.
I can't wait to read these forums after launch...whenever that might be.
The God-Tasos has stated that cities will be the only safe-zones. Outside of that, anyone can kill you. Yes- Anyone. They'll only get an alignment drop if they're of the same or allied race. Otherwise they'll get nothing...except combat skill increases and everything you had in your bag.
No, this isn't a niche pvp game. Not at all. You'll be seeing billboards on the turnpike and at disney land in a week.

(sigh) the "perils" you list for DF are some of the main reason I want to play it, sounds like it will be a very cutthroat environment... and i guess that just appeals to me.
<facepalm>
First off, get the name of the company right so you don't sound even dumber.
Second, full loot will not be removed.
Third, there are no unanswered questions regarding the game, you're just not looking hard enough.
Finally, they've been polishing for a year, what will 3 months do?
The funny thing is, even griefers get sick of being griefed. To call Darkfall a niche game for griefers is a stretch. Griefers can't STAND getting griefed themselves...probably less so than the average player.
This is something most carebears can't understand. They think that, because they get so much emotional distress from dying unfairly in a video game, everyone else does. If you can't handle a dynamic, challenging, sandbox game, then don't play. Darkfall will be difficult and have harsh yet realistic consequences, basically, you're gonna needs some balls to play. Can't help you if you don't have them.
True enough, many wanabes will get filtered out of DF, but for the rest of us who are mature enough to handle a game like this, we look forward to it.

They celebrate that they're getting a niche FFA PVP game with low mass appeal in one post, and then say that you're fearful of it toppling your mass-market game in the next.
Ah, the joyous dichotomy of a DF fan's mind.

Even WAR was defeated by WoW.

You believe griefing others is a playstyle, or simply put harassing other players for the sake of amusement?
{ Mod Edit }

You have no clue what you are talking. I know exactly what market Adventurine is trying to target. Everyone else knows this, that is why we call it a niche game cause they are targeting a specific crowd. This is not going to be a AAA mmo game period. If you want to agrue about that than go ahead but you will lose.

A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven.

I hope DF will has "DarkTV - Exotic Sites for Your Viewing Pleasure" so that I can see the sights without being shot full of arrows or fireballs every time I take one step outside the city gates.

First off, get the name of the company right so you don't sound even dumber.
Second, full loot will not be removed.
Third, there are no unanswered questions regarding the game, you're just not looking hard enough.
Finally, they've been polishing for a year, what will 3 months do?
