I'm not sure if DF is going to be good or bad, perhaps it may not even release. However, what I do know is not you or I or anyone else on these forums are owed anything. People, like mage, making comments as if Aventurine has some terrible reputation then others talking like they are owed a beta tomorrow. Come on guys it's ridiculous.
Every one of you sound just as bad as the people who have already declared DF as the greatest game ever. Seriously, you are not owed anything. Get over yourselves.
have you thought about the other things that need to be setup as well, like billing system, account system etc etc plenty of out-of-game things to setup.
True enough, setting up an MMO is serious business. Still not convinced the folks at Aventurine really understand this business. They have till the 22nd to confirm one way or another.
Judging by the amount of chatter and hype that has been generated over this game, I'd say they understand it pretty well.
What? Selling games? Or creating a good product?? I fail to see your logic.
Well, seeing as how we have no idea whether the game is good or not, I'd have to say selling games. Regardless of what communication they could have given us, we still wouldn't know if they had a quality product or not until we all got our hands on it. What I was saying is they've managed to create a huge buzz about their game with almost no advertising. I find that impressive. Before the release of a game, getting the word out is really the goal of any game company.
You could say "they're just trying to make a quick buck and will take our money and run", but that's all speculation. On the other hand, you could say "They wouldn't do that! They will take care of the game once it's released.", but that, too, is speculation. The truth is no one can say with certainty how this whole thing is going to turn out. To attempt to do so is just silly.

Okay. I understand what you're saying.
I think Kyleran is mostly talking about the ability to run an MMO. The difference between a MMORPG, and a typical RPG is that the relationship is on going. If the person selling the product (aventurine in this case) wants to keep a strong customer base, not just the one time sale, they need to keep the lines of communication open. It's very important. I'm in sales, I don't do one time sales. I know that if something happens (like a product is suddenly back ordered, or something gets mis shipped) Not communicating with the customer will cost me the relationship, and as such, hurt my wallet. Aventurine is doing the bad salesman ship things, like.. no follow through, lack of communication, and sporting a "I'm better than you attitude (as per Tasos)". This is how to NOT get repeat business (that is monthly subscriptions).
Aventurine doesn't have the market share. They aren't the king on the block. They still have to EARN our business. The lack of communication .. isn't helping them.

Actually, scripted bots are better at stress testing than humans are. Using actual humans to stress test a server is quite primitive.
The date was pushed to Jan. 22nd. But note: The game is READY for release on the 5th of Dec. Per Tasos.
"game is ready for release" is not the same thing as "our servers and partners are also ready".
EARLY january--Press Beta.. still not happening. The Press.. Gathers information to report to folks like you and me. Even with an NDA intact, a press beta wouldn't have ot adhere (or they wouldn't have to sign) a document saying they couldn't say they were in Beta.
Why do you think the press also wouldn't be under NDA? It is standard practise to NDA a preview in order to coordinate press releases on/around the same day.
What gives? I dont' knwo how any one can honestly expect them to release the game on Jan 22nd, when they have yet to hit ANY date or timeframe posted...
Take deep breaths and relax. The sky is not falling. If they miss Jan 22 then you can panic and whine about it then.

Regardless of how the business world works, the makers of Darkfall or not businessmen. If they are legit then they apparently want to do it their way which I can completely understand givent he whining and crying that the release of a new game can engender.
They already are known so it seems that a marketing push wasn't really needed. As long as they can successfully create a means for creating accounts and charging people then there really is no reason why they can't just say "servers are up, make accounts and come on in".
of course, if there are other issues then players will find out soon enough.

I didn't quoite again because it's a ridiculously long quote now, but I'm still on topic.
You make valid points about keeping an ongoing relationship through communication, however, I would have to say that, first and foremost, you need a product to sell. The point that I was trying to make is that no one knows what Aventurine will be like when the game launches. They could end up having the best player-developer communication in history or they could just disappear. We don't know. I was trying to say that it's silly to say what will happen in the future because we don't know. I understand having doubts based on the lack of communication pre-release, but I'm following this game because I'm interested in the game itself and not whether or not the developers hold my hand and comfort me while they are trying to get their game out.
I'll admit, I'm a little doubtful based on the fact that there's no information on game availiblity and such so close to their given launch date, but I'm not going to dismiss them because of it. If the game launches as planned, I'll give it a try and *then* make a decision on whether or not the company deserves my money. If the game doesn't launch, I'll simply move on to another game. To sit here and say this or that is going to happen in the future serves no purpose. Well, other than to advertise and hype the game, that is.
Almost had me with your last statement but one thing you people who declare it as nothing more than vaporware then use the argument "not paying with my money" always exclude is the fact that Tasos already mentioned a free trial from the beginning. Yes, that is right people. When someone like Templarga, who likes to mislead, states they are not paying until they are 'satisfied' well guess what! You don't have to pay either until you are satisfied because you get a 'free trial'.
Now, understand something. I have my doubts about Jan. 22nd. Heck, I'm not sure if DF will ever release. It might be the greatest hoax in the history of MMOs but then again it might be highly important to keep things underwrap until the launch date. Just because a company doesn't do things the same way, or traditional way, as other companies doesn't disqualify them or their product.
Furthermore, being silent isn't anything like what Funcom, D&L, or even Turbine did. Those companies either lied, misled or flat out did both. To group Aventurine with them is absurd.
Regardless of how the business world works, the makers of Darkfall or not businessmen. Exactly. It's obvious to anyone with a clue that Aventurine are not in this just for the money.
Well, seeing as how we have no idea whether the game is good or not, I'd have to say selling games. I understand your point, but I think you are confusing hype with good business. Generating hype for a game especially an MMO does not translate into big money. Only with sustained subsciptions will Aventurine make money off this game. Hype will get you looks, but if the deployment and quality of the product are horrible they will still take a loss on it.
A good example of this is Shadowbane, which has a similar development line as DF. For the time it generated a great deal of hype (though nothing compared to MMOs today). When the game was released it had a brief surge and then the base shrunk very quickly due to the quality. It has been on life support ever since.
A fanatical community can turn into a companies worse nightmare (SWG) very quickly. I am not sure Aventurine and especially Tasos understand this. From the interviews and their actions, it certainly does not seem like they care. While they do not owe us anything, we as a player base do not owe them either. When it comes to a game of chicken the company in debt will lose to the consumer with various other options. It would be in their best interest to handle their PR differently.

How do you know this with such certainty that you are able to make this claim? It is not uncommon for the press to given info and to be told it's not to go to print until a certain date. I'm not saying that mmorpg.com is in the beta I'm just wondering where you get your information from.

Seems to me that Adventurine has done things their way from the beginning and on their own terms. We just happen to be used to the way games are "normally" presented to us that this all just "feels" wrong. Just because they haven't dished information about their Billing system and opened up the game for Open Beta, doesn't mean that they aren't ready. How many other companies who've been down those same roads have completely scewed things up and hand fed us all the information we wanted at the same time? Kudos to them for doing things their own way. It's the final product that will speak for itself (good or bad). I wouldn't have it any other way.
Can't you see it, my brothers? It is not that Tasos is a man of Aventurine... but that he IS the messiah! As Tasos was at the beginning, so was the Word. The Word is Good and it is Darkfall! Behold the white border which casteth glory upon our savior and his teachings. For when the great heavens open on January 22nd, the our lord, Tasos, shall send upon the heathenous disbelievers a great conflagration!
And in the eve of this day... to the dawn of next morn... we shall bask in the flavor of the Word. Upon our lips shall we taste his righteousness! Together, brothers... we shall make ascension to the Great White Border!
Why do you all get so upset over a game not coming out anytime soon?
This game will not come out on jan. 22nd. Let's get real. There's been no real stress test and there isn't even billing or cust. service setup. The sooner you come to grips that it will take at least another 3-4 months before the open beta comes out, the better everyone will be. If in fact this game even exists.
I see it working this way. They delay it until April and say it was an april fools joke.

Actually, scripted bots are better at stress testing than humans are. Using actual humans to stress test a server is quite primitive.
Entirely speculation. I can tell you that bots will NOT act the same way players do (that is try to break things like going through walls, log of dropping items ETC)
"game is ready for release" is not the same thing as "our servers and partners are also ready".
Why do you think the press also wouldn't be under NDA? It is standard practise to NDA a preview in order to coordinate press releases on/around the same day.
Take deep breaths and relax. The sky is not falling. If they miss Jan 22 then you can panic and whine about it then.
You ability to not build up assumptions prior to posting makes you like.. well.. ******(Censored).
I'm stating that the chances of this game happening on the 22nd are highly unlikely, and that Aventurine should just come out and say it.

The whole Darkfall scenario reminds me of Age of Conan...
I remember sentences like:" The game is finished we're just doing some fine-tuning" "We are just working on litte things, the game is ready to be released"
And when AoC was released it was a Beta... great! too many bugs, many features not implented...
As I said, Darkfall really reminds me of Age of Conan...
Tasos = Gaute ?!?
pain
When the war of the beasts brings about the worlds end,
the goddess descends from the sky, wings of light and dark spread afar.
There was never an "open beta" announced by Tasos that would end on Dec - someone reported it from ADW but it was never confirmed.
- Said by Tasos (31. October 2008):
“The announcement during ADW was that the open beta phase is scheduled to end early in December. More importantly this means that the game will be ready to release at that point. Marketing consideration kept us from just announcing a release date. The game will be ready for release, and the launch may follow directly, or shortly after, depending on the marketing landscape at the time.”

actually it highly it will it was said last thursday it will if they was going to delay they would know by now
How do you know this with such certainty that you are able to make this claim? It is not uncommon for the press to given info and to be told it's not to go to print until a certain date. I'm not saying that mmorpg.com is in the beta I'm just wondering where you get your information from.
EDIT: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Press_embargo
except leaks say other worlds excpt some features not quite turned on but thats just because there doing a q/a process

I read in another post on this forum from one of the MODS that MMORPG.com hasn't received a Beta invite yet. It's in one of the posts on the front page.
