Hmm how to make sense out of my topic tittle..........perhaps Heineken is helping allitle.......or not....
Lets try:
I want that holodeck experiance.........get into some fantasy world, either sci-fi or fantasy based, but not limited towards combat only, combat should be part of that virtual experience but it's should not be demanded to proceed in the world if you don't want to combat your way up.
What annoys me and keeps that reminder on it being just a game, hence lesson the immersiveness to Me I as I don't want to experience that when ever a new item, new location, new NPC I talk to....etc...etc... to give me a sound effect or popup in my view. I didn't get into MMORPG's to copy a similar experience I already got from single player or multi player games. I went into MMORPG as they provided a complete different experience.
I must admit even though I played Meridian59 and UO it was actually SWG that really got me into MMORPG's as that game provided what no other game in other genre's provided and that was actually living the life of your character on another world/time/place, that virtual experience, which to me is lacking from most current MMO's.
And nope I ain't a no-liver looking for a virtual life, but I am a GAMER looking for a different EXPERIENCE, which I thought have found with SWG (pre-cu mostly) <Edit and highlighted aswell made it bigger as there are a few people who seem to totaly ignore this part as they seem not able to understand that I or others want a fun experiance, want things to do in our games , Don't want a second life, Don't want a second Job, we or I want content created by developers but why not give us tools aswell to creat content, why make games in this genre that limited towards combat only, we already have tons and ton of games for that, like I said before and many time MMORPG use to be so much more, and I am sure they still can become so much more.....
Perhaps it's because I play many different genre of games and enjoy them and always thought MMORPG's would evolve in much more then lets say SWG-precu but in a more polished/updeated/contented added way then other genre's provided, but apart from a bigger player base to me most current A-titlle's don't provide that much more compared to the regular multiplayer games.
Did it make any sense to you?, perhaps it did, perhaps it didn't, atleast tonight thank my friend Heineken, that started a bit to early at a conference meeting and Heineken kept stalking me when I came home after dinner.

Makes alot of sense, its exactly how I feel these days. My best experience also was pre-cu SWG as far as MMORPG's goes and I have been trying to make up for it ever since, without success.
being an old SWG fan (from closed beta until last year) i can say that EVE has filled a ton of gaps for me....dl the trial and give it a whirl
future is almost here

I mean closer to a holodeck expirience you aint going to come in the next 50 or so years
Makes perfect sense man. I'm right there with ya.
MMOs these days are either single player games with a chat channel, or at best a mindless FPS with "epic" gear.
MMORPVHW
Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Virtual Holodeck World.
Oh, wait.

A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"
Order of the White Border.
i agree with this to the extent that you should feel as if you are your character etc but if the game got too in depth you would be left with too much to do and it would be a dizzying experience
Not at all. It just keeps you busy for years instead of a couple of months.

Nothing more to add...:)
Play Ryzom.
Play EVE.
seriously, try one or the other.
good lord @ all the constant thinly-veiled "There are no sandbox games" threads.
This has been a big issue with the more recent MMO's (I leave the RPG off on purpose). Developers are concentrating on building more arcade style games (look at AoC, WAR, DCUO, Agency, STO, Champions) and forgetting all about what put MMORPG's on the map originally, that being a virtual world to step in and an alternative to Pen & Paper RPG's you can login at all times. Instant travel, easy loot, primary solo gameplay are all turning MMORPG's into giant single player games that hand you everything and you feel finished with the game 6 weeks later. Gone are the days of playing the same MMORPG for 3+ years.
When the console MMO's start arriving, they'll be even worst. Not because consoles gamers are dumb kiddies, but because the out of touch Developers THINK console gamers are dumb kiddies who need dumbed down gameplay and everything handed to them.
Well I will admit I LOVE EVE's features, played a few free trails, even subbed one time but what I never got comfortable with was me being a spaceship, I know of "walking on space stations" but I feel it will mostly garner towards the already settled player base, don't get me wrong but so far from what I know about it to me it seems like a great addition towards current players. So far no planet exploration? please provide link if so, as that would get me interested. The reason I feel it will be a greater addition towards settled players then it would atract new player is based on: http://pc.ign.com/articles/928/928009p1.html , as before please provide correct info might the info my opinion is based be incorrect
But am sure that I will try it it's fully implimented into the live game, regardless my current opinion..
Nope it does not. I play games to be entertained. MMO is just one genre. It needs to be a good game. Second LIfe is a true world sim and i won't touch it with a ten foot pole. It has no professional created content, no direction, no hack-n-slash, no power ups, no stories.
Shut up alread with the stupid EVE!
I understand that you didn't feel it made sense.
For some reason my post probebly made you think I don't play games to be entertained, well...I play them to be entertained, just like you or anyone else, Is it wrong to want a different experiance from different genre's of games?
I also do not want a true world sim, if I wanted that don't you think I would already be playing games like The Sims......sorry they ain't my type of games, MMORPG are, or atleast use to be.
Also you seem to think that I don't want professional created content, what made you think that?, would it hurt if it would be mixed with player created content, player or GM run events....etc..etc...
Does RPG mean anything to you? Use to think that those words connected to MMO meant something to people into MMORPG´s
Good, post and it just goes to show you different people want different things out of a game, I want pure game in my MMO, not a virtual world with game like element. Which is why I can't stand WoW. Would be nice if a game offered both play styles.
Shut up alread with the stupid EVE!
buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!! there is someone stupid here...
Anyways I want them to be a game and I think there is way more money if they make it a game and not a second life(pun intended)
Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.
If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms

um....wow....I think I just came a little...

Not really. Hack-n-slash is much better (so *action* RPG in the standard genre lingo). Easier to get into, more enjoyment, no need to be mindful of stories and distraction .. focus on power-ups and loot. Basically Diablo in a MMO context.
I will see if TOR can really put good stories back in MMO but right now .. hack-n-slash is the king.
And how exactly would this MMORPG work? I mean...what sorts of features would make up this new experience?
I never played SWG, so I don't really know what was so special about it. What were some of the features it had that gave you this whole new experience?

Guys! I'm hopelessly lost in a mountain of mole hills! Them damn moles!
Actually, it sounds better if you just make it something like Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Hologame:
MMORPH
Last mmo i played they tried for the virtual world was Vanguard. They had the right idea even thou they messed up big time (it was only 60% finished at launch) I (and my guild of 30 friends) still stayed for 15 months before finally realising the player base wasnt large enough to support proper development and they game just stalled for me.
Went and tried AoC. Great for first 20 levels then found out they'd forgotten to add any content and i was grinding solo instanced to level up to find end game was missing or broken. Small linear zones also didnt feel like a mmo. Only other thing to do besides fight was crafting/harvesting and it was a joke and just a time/money sink.
Next was WAR. Launch was smooth, game played fairly well. I enjoyed seiging keeps and rvr and scenarios in the first 2 tiers. Then the t3 Tor Anroc scenario grind started as people avoided RvR because it had no rewards. Most of my guild leaves causes of the grind and lack of anything to do but fight. Crafting was just an afterthought and PvE was bland. I am still subbed and enjoy parts of the RvR experience but since there is only fighting (i am maxed in every tradeskill on alts now) at certain times i log on only to find myself standing around unable to fight cause its off peak. I see no long term appeal of the game.
Talking to guildies about the latest mmo's we all agree that just basing a game on fighting isnt what we are looking for. Sure we want great, fun combat but community and socialising are just as important in mmo's and probably more so if they want to retain long term players.
I hope Darkfall succeeds as the genre needs new blood.
I hear ya.
I'll be getting the game when it launches in the US...maybe not on release because there will probably be problems that they need to sort out, but I'm hoping to eventually get into it with my bro who got me interested into it.
A good indie company needs to succeed in order to show the big guys that just because you have a ton of money, doesn't mean you will make the best MMORPG ever.

I'm with ya...
But unfortunately for us, the "But they shuold be purh whack-a-mole games durnit, not have houses and stories and non combat stuff and stuff" crowd wins.
Thanks to developers that ain't gamer, publishers that aint gamers and most importantly, the funders, who are cheapass boring men in suit with no knowledge at all about MMORPG's.
Oh and thanks to the "Gamer" players who just can't let MMOREPG's be the one game genre thats a virtual experience, and have fun in all the other Gameygame genres instead.
The last of the Trackers
Reklaw, I am totally with you on this. I go back 10 years to UO but it was pre-nge SWG that did it for me. Although just a game it was also a true virtual world. It did feel alive for me. How SOE could miss the brilliance of their own work of art will fuel discussion boards for years to come.
No current game does that for me. I am accused of being a EQ2/SOE fanboi but this is far from the case. I find only two games come close for me to what you/we are looking for. Well, maybe not close but at least a shadow of the virtual world I am looking for. Those games are EQ2 and Ryzom. I defend EQ2 since it is the only mmorpg out at the moment that the characters feel alive, not just vehicles to move around the game world with, to me. I love that experience so much that I tolerate the short comings of SOE.
Ryzom also does this a bit but lacks the type of support a major mmorpg needs into days market. Brilliant little game but that is the problem for me "little". Not little in landmass but little in what it needed to be a true masterpiece in the mmorpg world. However, ryzom is still a fantastic game. I should also mention EVE. I gave it a good chance about 5 months while it did not do it for me, I do understand why so many love it.
The next developer who sees the potential and profits that are possible by creating an experience like what "we" are looking for will indeed be very rich in cash, customer loyalty, and creative satisfaction . Let's hope someone sees the light. Unfortunately they will need very deep pockets to compete in todays mmo market place.
Reklaw good topic even if Hieneken had a hand in it.
