Yeah cause a korean MMORPG that is not going to be anything like a sandbox will really attract the type of players that Darkfall attracts. Nice advertisement though.
Interesting. And where does this info come from? I haven't found anything that says whether or not the game will be sandbox or linear or some combination.
How many korean sandbox games do you know?
How many korean grind games do you know?
Odds are this is just going to be a reskinned korean grinder.
How many korean mmorpg's have you seen that play like that? Probably none.
Remember kids, stereotyping will always come bite you.
As for Darkfall VS TERA, Games like TERA just show how terrible Darkfalls combat really is.
Actually, next gen korean mmorpg's are already way ahead of Darkfalls cute little combat system
Both of those clips you linked show arcade style combat. Ugly, clunky, button bashing crap. Not nex-gen combat, insomuch as it is not-last-gen-but-the-gen-before combat in a 3d environment. Think street-fighter or streets of rage in 3d
Both of those clips show advanced mmorpg character movement unlike anything we have ever seen in any mmorpg. What other mmorpg can you first throw a guy away in the air, jump after him, slash him a couple of times, grab him, than throw him right down in his pals while you quickly jump away and launch a volley of arrows as you make your escape from the group? You certainly can't do that in Darkfall.
Darkfalls, ahum "FPS like combat" is about 10 years behind the curve. It's about as basic as twitch based combat can possibly get.
The combat featured in those videos was not "twitch-based" at all. Standing close enough to something so that your sword can reach it when you swing, or your 'grapple-attack' can be activated does not make this game revolutionary in it's combat style.
Darkfalls combat is supposed to be a realistic twitch-based system where you can aim ranged attacks, block incoming attacks and aim melee attacks to some extent. You can't compare some MMO with a combat system similar to something seen in the Devil May Cry series to another MMO with a system more like Oblivion.
They're completely different animals. One is made for a realistic or more simulated approach to combat, while the other is made to look cool when the right combination of buttons are pressed.
Actually it is. You actually have to aim your attack, manually block, and move/roll/jump out of the way, all in real time. Considering that the pace is MUCH faster than that of Darkfall, Continent of the Ninth is more twitch than Darkfall will ever be.
But you're right in comparing it to DMC and Oblivion as DMC's combat has far more depth, skill, and overall quality than that of Oblivion.
That does not look very advanced, nor next-gen, just like the same old button mashing hack n slasher with a pseudo combo system.
It's not possible to see from those clips how the characters are controlled.
Both of you could be wrong.
What is next-gen anyway? As long as it's fun to play, I don't care if a game uses "next-gen" combat or sticks to something old.
Have a look at AoC with it's next-gen combat system. It's indeed different, and it's nice to see something new at first. But is it fun after an hour playing? No. You are basically told on screen what key you must press for the combo to succeed.
Are 100+ vs 100+ possible in those "combat " games ?

Users need more quality, good graphics, game play, tehnical support and so on.. in conclusion, we are not 5 years ago or more in the begining of MMORPG. We expect the games to have a standard level for 2009.
Yeah, wow.. pretty graphics, cool animations etc. Guess what, in these new generation korean grind games when you click the attack button, the char makes a static combat animation (you can't run and hit at the same time etc) Think god of war, devil may cry etc. In darkfall it's a realtime combat animation, think mount and blade or star wars jedi academy.

Who knows, TERA was only recently unveiled. However it is made by many people who worked on Lineage 2 including the lead game director, producer, lead programmer and lead artist, and during Lineage 2's peak populairty, 100 vs 100 was probably considered a small siege.
This is from the Bluehole (the developer of TERA) website:
MMORPG is a game enjoyed simultaneously by numerous players. For long-term enjoyment, initial content volume must be augmented on a timely basis. TERA will appeal to end-users seeking continuous content support without the sacrifice of high quality graphics. Even after a week… a month… a year… the game will pull the player deeper to the virtual world.
The goal is to achieve the world's highest concurrent user load per server!
Players in TERA will not only experience battles with higher concurrent users, but also encounter a revolutionized interaction system for political and economic professions. TERA will offer a stable, non-disruptive in-game social life.

Stop defending them. If DF was released 3-4 years ago, yeah, was a good game, but now, with his graphics and gameplay is ALREADY OUTDATED. You will have the proof on 25 feb.

That aside, the combat here is not next generation. Dodging/rolling has already been done, aiming your attack looks as simple as standing in front of your target, and the fast paced hack and slash just seems like any other game.
If you really like your asain style MMO's then that's fine. I personally don't care for them at all. What I'm really trying to point out here is that no matter how hard you try to project about the superiority of TERA's combat system, you're to meet stiff opposition from people who just don't like that kind of system. Afterall, we've seen it all before. Maybe not in an MMO, but all the elements are recycled.
While I'm very interested in both DF and TERA I'd have to say that I highly doubt they will be in direct competition with each other. This has nothing to do with game mechanics or graphics quality. It has everything to do with the artistic style of each game. There is a definite line between those that prefer western or those that prefer eastern art styles and people like me that enjoy both are a definite minority. People who like western art styles will play DF or MO and people who like eastern art styles will play Aion or TERA... it's that simple. I personally plan on trying all of these games as I like both art styles.

The game has only recently been unveiled, don't know if its build around PVP but considering korean mmorpg's are known for their heavy focus on PVP I wouldn't be surprised.
You're clearly in denial. You can clearly see you have to aim your attack in the video (You did actually watch the video before you commented, right?). You can also see how the Archer takes advantage of the terrain, jumping from cliff to cliff, taking distance in consideration. Saying it's just like any other game is downright ignorant and is an undeniable act of denial.
The reason you meet stiff opposition here is simply because it doesn't have Darkfall slapped on the box. Darkfall fans aren't passionate, they have long passed that stage. It has now become a cult with the only intention is to bash just about everything that isn't Darkfall.
The Hypocricy is also undeniable. For years Darkfall fandrones have been praising Darkfall for having twitch based combat. So here comes another mmorpg which actually does the same just better, and excuses are found to bash it.
Yeah cause a korean MMORPG that is not going to be anything like a sandbox will really attract the type of players that Darkfall attracts. Nice advertisement though.

Honestly, I didn't read the thread, just the OP's post. I DID, however, watch SEVERAL videos for TERA Online that were up on YouTube. Frankly, it looks to me more like AION should maybe worry, not Darkfall. The game appears to be more along the lines of what AION fans might be interested in. It's much too "flashy," in my opinion, and not near....I don't know, what's the word....earthy enough....raw enough....uhm....base enough? It's not hardcore and viscious and seminal and.....I can't find the words to describe what I'm trying to say, but if you wait awhile....some DF fan will come up with the word, I guarantee.
From what I get from reading most of our posts, DF fans are trying to get AWAY from the flashy, polished, pristine, ethereal environments and styles and delve into something more gritty and real and less "fantasy pastel-ish" than how this game appears.
Someone help me out here and come up with the word I'm trying to find......
Personally, both the styles of Darkfall AND that of Aion or TERA appeal to ME. But I like to have a very vast variety of games to play depending on my mood.
I love how people call it a "grindfest". Aside from the fact the studio states the game is made for a global audience, How long do you think it's going to take to level all those skills in Darkfall?
This is why people like you should just stop, think and quit your discussion. You like to play games where you gain items and stats.
Darkfall is not such a game, Darkfall is a platform for clan politics and character development in another fashion than the regular mold, grind xp, grind items rinse and repeat.
Most people don't understand how others might see MMORPG's and why they frown upon games that spoon-feed them and are claustrophobic. MMORPG's should be open and player driven but every other MMORPG is not designed this way so it's impossible, but not Darkfall.

This is why people like you should stop posting on forums. You know which games were also about clan politics? Lineage, Lineage 2, ArchLord, Age of Conan, Dark & light and many, many more.
Just because a game features clan politics doesn't mean the won't be any grind.
Doesn't look so hot when you see it in motion, does it?
Wow, why are you even trying? That darkfall video is from an EARLY build 3+ years ago and you know it. This video is more accurate on what darkfall looks like in motion graphic wise, press High quality http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=XX4jLw5oM1c
Look at this video www.youtube.com/watch this is what darkfall combat animations should have looked like
Okay so the big issue is Darkfall is that people say it's great when there is nothing to show for it yet these games have even less and yet they are the next best thing?

Final Fantasy 7
2 things wrong with your argument.
First of all Darkfall does not look better than World of Warcraft.
Also, World of Warcraft is 4 years old. Darkfall is about to release (we think...). standards are higher today for a new game.
DF graphics/artwork/animation are crap compared with WoW, probable you never played WoW.

That's sad when this game has more videos released than DF... it does look better imo from what I've seen of DF but that hasn't been much.

This is darkfalls combat system:

This is what a real next gen combat system looks like:
www.youtube.com/watch
www.youtube.com/watch
And is this game built around a Player versus Player concept? Am I going ot be able to grab another player, throw HIM in the air and then shower him with arrows? I would be confident to think not.
It's so sad that it's actually funny.

Yeah, World of Warcraft has alot better graphics than Darkfall, just compare these screenshots..

Just because a game features clan politics doesn't mean the won't be any grind.

Wow, why are you even trying? That darkfall video is from an EARLY build 3+ years ago and you know it. This video is more accurate on what darkfall looks like in motion graphic wise, press High quality http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=XX4jLw5oM1c
Okay so the big issue is Darkfall is that people say it's great when there is nothing to show for it yet these games have even less and yet they are the next best thing?
Can someone say hypocritical?
