1- Three Kingoms:  They finally get around to releasing a game based off of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and this is all we've got to show for it?  Did one PvP battle and it was basically just a circle of grass that apparently we all were supposed to fight for.

2- Vanguard:  This game irks me because it should be doing so much better than it is.  It has the most fun PvE I think out of any game in the market.  Unfortunately, the character graphics are really bad too.  Only having three choices of hair for say... female fox men I could understand, but for dark elves? C'mon!

3- Tabula Rasa:  Not being able to dodge incoming fire in a FPS style game was a big downer for me.   This game felt pretty desperate from the day it was released.

4- World of Warcraft: It's going to be a good day for the industry if it can be dethroned by a non-Blizzard MMORPG.  Here's looking at you, Knights of the Old Republic.

5- Dungeons and Dragons Online: Eberon? C'mon!  To say nothing about releasing without Druids and Monks and the non-existent state of prestige classes.  This game needed a model like the original Asheron's Call... a large sprawling world to explore with dungeons in every nook and cranny.

Popular does not mean good.I love when people try to say that. It never makes any sense why did the thing become popular in the first place because it is good. You make a game to make money and people to play your game .We have a game that has around 8 million active users and makes 500 million year.

Can the masses like a bad product,That is subjective. You are not the market,New kids on the block was great product for their market.New kids on the block was a bad product for most males but males where never object NKOTB or any boy band their object was females. They perfected their market and any product that knows it market is good product.

I played Wow for about two months(i resub to try the DK).Wow is a great game but not a great game for me.Collecting reskins virtual armor does not appeal to me but some people for some people it does. They are to many people playing wow for to be called  a bad game, wow is not the greatest game but is certianly not a bad game.If you played wow for over a year how in world do you call it bad game all of a sudden. How do you play crap for over a year or six months, how stupid do you have to be that takes months to realize a game is bad.

    My worst mmoprg

1.AO ,Truthfully i have never played AO but when you have the worse patching and installing system ever know to man.You get first place in my book. When ever you have to troubleshoot more than hour to install a game it is bad.Maybe this just my experiance but this is the first game for me ever that i couldn't get to install to play.I should not have to go out of my way to figure out fix a game.

    2. 2moons/Dekaron

    3.Archlord

4.Ryzom-I have never been so bored in my life so quickly.Cool world,Cool crafting,Cool AI but a boring game. This game should be force to merge with Darkfall so they both can become a real game.

5.Rohan/Requiem-Few games have more wasted promise than these games.Honsetly both games could big market games but they choose to have to be generic f2p games.

    Worst: No particular order

    1. EVE - Sorry, I didn't give the game a fair chance and I never will because I hated it in the first hour.

    2. Every Asian grind I played - They all seem so fun for an hour or two, then its always the same... you say wait? This isn't fun...

    3. Auto Assault - Good lord this game was bad, that's all I can say.

    4. DDO - I love D&D and it tried real hard to do something fresh and interesting, but I hated it.

    5. FFXI - Forced grouping to play a game? I played this game WAY too late and the starting quests were great, with cut scenes and people helped me learn the game. Then I got to level 13 and no one wanted me in their party because I was new to the game and I would sit for hours waiting to play, NO THANKS, worst game design ever.

    Best:

    1. UO - I loved it post Tram even, I liked all the options and just how the world seemed alive and ran by the PLAYERS, not the game engine.

    2. Vanguard - Best PvE game out right now. The classes and complexity to the game is very nicely done. If you go into the game trying to blaze through it like WoW, it won't be any fun.

    3. WoW - Someone of the first page said "I played for THREEEE months..." and he didn't understand why people thought it was good. This is the typical elitest attitude about WoW. They play it for many months and have a great time, then it bored because they logged 1000 hours into it and then call it a bad game... typical.

    4. CoH/CoV - Simple, fun, really felt connected to my character. Too simple that it got bored, but before that time, I really had a blast.

    5. WAR - Had a great time, didn't stick around long though but the experiences I did have are very memorable. Lasting appeal to the game? Maybe not, fun while I played? Very fun.

    6. AO - I don't know but everything in this game felt all out of reach but so interesting I wanted to achieve it. I think that this game had a lot of flaws, but the biggest thing it had was crazy things you saw players have, that you wanted to achieve also, and I think that is the essense of a good MMO, not running out of  things you WANT to play for.

    Worst, no particular order:

Every F2P Asian game even though I usually give them a few weeks.

2 Worlds (Not sure if this was an MMORPG but I threw it in the trash, literally, after 15 minutes playing)

Darkfall (2 years waiting for beta invite, 2 weeks trying to buy it from the store, 2 days to quit)

AoC (I really wanted to love this game, really.  Just couldn't handel the lack of endgame, proper balance and people)

    Horizons

    AC2

There are a few more that might beat out some of these

    Best:

    ***EQ1***  (All time best)

EQ2 (Before devs started nerfing everythign cool)

WoW (If you think WoW is a terrible game like Darkfall, you are wrong.  Whole other ballgame)

    WAR (Bleh, I guess)

Popularity does not equal a good product. New Kids on the Block sold millions of albums, does not mean they were that good.

ok, if WoW making more money then any othe rmmorpg and having more subscribers then any other mmorpg doesnt make it good, then what does make any game good?

New Kids on the Block made more money than Prince, Bruce Springston, Elton John from 1988 to 1991. I guess that is saying that NKOTB were better than those listed. Popularity does not translate to something being good. Honestly good is a matter of opinion. I do not like WoW, I do not think it is good. That is my view on it.

BTW, the pet rock was very popular in the 70s, how good was that.

Your reasoning sucks.  NKOTB's job was to deliver an entertainment product to fans.  They were the BEST at doing this.  Better than Prince, Elton, etc.  An MMORPG's job is to deliver an entertainment product to fans.  Games like Darkfall, Horizons, AoC did not do so and instead caused people to suffer hours of torment and frustration.  WoW is the BEST MMORPG in the world at delivering an entertainment product to fans.  Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it sucks.  Same with NKOTB.  Just because you don't like their music doesn't negate the fact that they were the best in the world at what they did.

I notice alot of people are putting Warhammer down as one of their 5 then saying it isnt a bad game but doesnt live up to their expectations......To me WAR isnt a bottom 5 MMO......I've had more fun in it than I have in any other PVP based game and I dont normally like PVP......Then again I went into it with no expectations......As for my 5 here goes:

    1. Runescape- I havent played it in a couple years and I heard they upgraded the graphics, but when I did play it was hands down the worst MMO around.....The community was a disgrace and the graphics were horrible at best.

    2. FFXI- I only played this on a trial basis and thank goodness I did.......I really looked forward to this game as I liked EQ so much and heard FFXI was group based so I thought it was a good match.......To me the graphics wer ejust horrible.....Everything was super blurry and unclear.....I tried several recommendations to make it better and it never looked good at all.......There are just some games you cant get in to and this was one of thsoe for me.

    3. DDO- Tried it in beta.......Always like D&D stuff and rulesets but this game felt weak......The combat wasnt bad but the world was soooooo small and there just was not enough content.

    4. LoTRO- I know I will get alot of guff for putting this one as it seems to be very loved here but I thought it was pretty lame......The gameplay reminded me way too much of WoW and the characters and animations were poor........I liked the movies but the game was pretty boring and it was wayyyyyyyy tooo quest driven......After I left LoTRO it took me a few months before I enjoyed questing in any game again.

    5. Vanguard- The world was just too big......The players were so spread out that you felt alone alot of the time.......Also there were just too many gamebreaking issues when I played.....It was also too much of a resource hog and ran poorly in crowded areas.......There were also too many empty areas....The game felt very rushed and while it had great potential it shiould have turned out much better.

    1) Underlight...Could have been great...Had real Role Playing..turned into glorified chat room..

    2) the Realm.............Boring combat and no role playing to speak of.

3)Runescape...Great for kiddies but not so fun for adults...What community?

4)Rubies of Eventide....shallow and empty world

5)Dungeon Runners....Dumbed down hack and slash!

Well first off its a list of personal observations on subjective material.  I just happened to quote you because you say you don't agree with people listing WAR then you list FFXI...

Just an observation from my point of view.

My personal list (in no paticular order):

    1) Horizons (yes heck I even pre-ordered this because my GF thought the pre-production video looked cool).  Altho its now just called Isteria or something like that.  Hard to believe its even still around.  From the original billing being done by a company that did billing for phone sex companies to a world that "could have been" but never quite was.

    2) Auto Assault.  I thought it would have made a great console or PC single player game but not an MMORPG.

    3) Tabula Rasa.  I think this game had the best and most solid foundation of any MMO I've ever played.  However, a foundation with almost no game built on it.. is still pretty much not a game.  I was also a Richard Garriott fanboi from my C64 days... silly me.

    4) SWG Post-NGE.  I don't think I really need to say much more.  Pre-CU was for me second only to the first couple years of Ultima Online as the best MMO I've ever played.

    5) Warhammer Online.  No I didn't list this because of the person I quoted.  In fact I almost didn't list it.  There is a simple reason for *me* this game belongs on this list.  Mythic with Dark Age of Camelot made one of the greatest RvR/PvP MMO's the world has ever seen.  This game didn't just miss the mark it hit an entirely different target.  When they shut down 63 servers as Mark Jacobs claims their subscriber base is growing.  I was reminded a little to much of John Smedley saying that EQ2 was merging servers because the world was so big players couldn't find each other.

Short version this is not a place Mark Jacobs or Mythic should have ever ended up.  I expected so much more.

I would have listed Age of Conan at number 5.  However, when I consider the state Anarchy Online launched in I would have expected the same for AoC.  Which is exactly the opposite of DAoC and Mythic with the expectations that would follow.

Those are just my personal views and its subjective.. you don't have to agree.

*note* as to my comment about FFXI.. I never had any problem with the graphics in the game.  It had imho one of the best control system of any mmorpg I've ever played (gamepad ftw) and the crafting, classes (dual class option) etc were interesting concepts in an mmorpg when it came out.  I'd actually rate that game in my top 5.. and I honestly could never stick with it.. which is odd you aren't supposed to have positive views on a game you don't play long term are you?

  • DiorenDioren Member Posts: 39

Final Fantasy Online: The game was so dam bad, after 30 minutes of playing, I threw the actual disk away and deleted the game.

Star Wars Galaxies : For all the lore to the universe, it was terrible. This is before and after SOE got their hands on it. Dull gameplay and lackluster....everything did it in for me.

Lord of the Rings Online: I had so much for this game. I went into the beta and was hyped because of the little intro sequence you go into. But then the game actually started and I all saw was bad mechanics, awful character models, and a generic UI. Given all the lore, you would expect all they had to get right was the actual gameplay of it. Guess I was wrong.

Vanguard: Jesus H Christ stapled to a Christmas tree. Where do I start. Another game I played Beta and had high hopes for. Terrible mechanics, clunky feel, bugs and glitches galore all made me want to vomit in some tinfoil and eat it.

Age of Conan: Third game I played Beta in and  again, I had high hopes for. I was so hyped about this game, I tried to push some of my guildmates/clanmates to play this game. Just like the others, a good idea, but the game was close to unplayable as you can get. And again, with all the lore, you would expect more than generic MMO fanfaire.

Worst 1-5 mmo? Umm about 200 asian grinder F2p cash shop games.

Best 1-5? EQ, UO, EVE, DAoC, Pre-CU (in no particular order)

Games like WAR, WoW, Lotro, EQ2,AO, Ryzom,Vanguard, Planetside,AC1,Wurm and some F2ps like Atlantica, Requiem,Mabinogi and RoM would fill out my top 20 all very nice games to play.

People putting WoW in the top 5 worst are a little haterish imo. You can easily find tons of crappy games on the net worse then WoW.

    Playing: EvE, Ryzom

Does Age of Conan and Warhammer Online really deserve to be in the list of 5 worst mmorpgs?! I guess those that do haven't played many!

Roma Victor, Horizons, Shadowbane, Dark and Light and SWG are my bottom 5.

  • verdantrexverdantrex Member UncommonPosts: 100

First off, as others have said, the interesting limitation to this thread is that most of us self edit ourselves from playing games that we suspect, or have heard, are TRULY awful.  In other words, the games that are on your "worst played" list must have appealed to you in some way before you ever even started playing.  It might have been the IP, it might have been the genre or the developer, or maybe it was just (yes, this is true) the HYPE.  Anyway, my worst five...

#5 Star Wars Galaxies (NGE) - no explanation needed.

#4 EverQuest  -  Visually, EQ set the path for many games that followed it because it was 3D and large, and had lots of classes and stuff.  But for me as a newbie, the game was just too large and hard to navigate, and ultimately very un-fun.

#3 A Tale in the Desert 2 - These series of games attempt to put you in the sandals of an ancient villager who is helping to build a civilization but there's a reason I'm not out in a field in a loincloth in the real world, digging for potatoes in the dirt, and it's not any more fun doing that in a virtual world.

#2 Minions of Mirth - I do feel a bit bad picking on the indies by putting them in my bottom three, but why do so many of them just lack FUN ?  Anyway, with MoM, I just had no idea what was going on and wandered around in a bland world, clueless, and then gave up.

#1 Roma Victor - I am a huge Ancient Rome history buff, and followed the game avidly leading up to launch.  I saw the horrible graphics, but the developers assured us they would improve.  And then I got into the beta, and was dumbstruck by what a clumsy, awful looking game RV was.  It didn't improve at launch, or in the couple of years since.  Hopefully someday someone will give the Ancient World the MMO it deserves.  We nearly had it maybe with Gods and Heroes, but nope, that one died before it even launched.  And now... there's pretty nothing in development except Vin Diesel's Carthaginian MMO, which is probably 5 years from launch, if that.

My favorites that I've played, all with admitted caveats:

#1 World of Warcraft - yeah, yeah, I know.

#2 City of Heroes - ultimately shallow, but that initial thrill of being able to fly and fight crime as a superhero was unmatchable while it lasted.

#3 The Matrix Online - Developed as a really fun and innotative game by Warner Bros, and then pretty much killed by Sony, but it was still a great game at its core.

#4 Dungeons and Dragons Online - Yeah, it's a shame they went with Ebarron.  But... the game totally captures the feel of the PnP game, and by putting so much emphasis on instanced group adventures, with voice narratives and lots of traps and puzzles, that feeling is only accentuated.  Not as much to solo, but with a group of friends, it has lots of great moments.

#5 Lord of the Rings Online - first time through, my machine wasn't strong enough to really appreciate it, but for capturing the feel of Middle Earth, LOTRO gets lots of cred.

I've never played an MMO I truly hated. I detest the super hyperstylized cutsey asian grindfest item mall games that  are everywhere these days but thats more a genre then a game in particular.

    My best

    1. Lord of the Rings Online: Hands-down the best-designed PvE leveling experience that I've had. While it does have the usual "kill x" and fedex quests, the storyline quests tend to be very immersive, and well-done. Great community, too, which makes you want to stick around. End-game leaves something to be desired, and the deeds are simply grindfests, unfortunately. The graphics are, imo, among the best of the fantasy MMOs.

    2. World of Warcraft: The game we all love to hate, right? I've come and gone from the game several times. The fact is, this is where most of my friends play, and thus the draw. And the game is good enough to enjoy. I don't think that it is the best in any single category, but for an all-around gaming experience, WoW does deserve some accolades. While the cartoony graphics aren't for everyone, the art is decent, and the thing will run on a C64, I suspect. The amount of possible customization of the UI is unmatched, afaik, and this is a plus for me.

    3. Eve Online: If you can appreciate it's complexity and depth, then it is a game one can fall for, easily. The PvE is abhorrent, but if you come into the game not caring about that, then it won't matter much anyway. The game's economy is unmatched, and frankly is a form of pvp unto itself, which I love. Both the best and worst communities out there, simultaneously. Get a decent corp, and find a few people that you can trust, because chances are, they're the only ones that you will ever trust in Eve. Like the people, the skill system is both the best and worst thing about the game. It is great to be able to skill up while not playing, but the endless waiting for certain skills to finish can be a big buzzkiller. Great graphics, but a rather poor UI.

    My worst

    1. Every Asian f2p out there that I've tried. There's been a LOT of them. None of them have kept me for more than a few hours before being uninstalled, sorry to say.

    2. Anarchy Online: I've tried several times to get into this one. I simply cannot. Clunky UI and clunkier gameplay make for a bad combo.

    3. City of Heroes: Another game that I've tried several times. Amazing character creation, but the game itself is just snooze-worthy. Most long-time players have huge numbers of alts... because I discovered that this is just about all there is to do in the game. If it has changed since then, sorry, but every time I tried it, I just couldn't stick with it.

    4. Warhammer Online: This one left a very bitter taste in my mouth. I bought the game at launch, and had a lot of fun with it, even thinking that it could be a keeper. But as I leveled up I saw that the game was actually rather thin on content. The PvE is rather lifeless. But I came for the PvP...unfortunately while the ORvR is good stuff, the endless scenario farming made it feel too much like the old WoW battleground grind, which I loathed. I made it into tier 3 before the grind made me quit.

My in-betweens (not sure where to place them)

    1. Vanguard: From the moment I installed this game, it looked like it had been rushed out the door with even the login screen incomplete. Fair enough, what about gameplay? In this case, I actually liked Vanguard. The classes were somewhat enjoyable, and diplomacy was at least original, even if a bit gimmicky. What killed the game for me were technical problems. Perhaps the game hated my gfx card, but on a system that runs even Crysis with DX10 in full throttle, Vanguard ran very poorly. I just could not enjoy the game with all the hitching and fps lag.

    2. Everquest 2: For various reasons, I never played this game to the level cap. But the game seemed to possess a ton of content, though I am not certain that it was very polished. Some of it looked rather thrown-together. Graphics were ok, but in my opinion did not justify the high system requirements (which I met, so not a big deal for me). I'd love to review the game further, but I didn't play it enough to do so.

ewww.. some of you aren't going to like this.....

CoX-   missions are cookie cutter and repetitive as hell.  I feel its really just a PvP game... which I'm sure is fine with PvP fans.

GW-  WAY too much instancing (I dont really believe its an MMO).  I know it has a lot of great features and my opinion is solely based on the first one at launch.. havent tried it since but thinking about it.  I guess GW is probably a great game.. but a terrible MMORPG.

L2-  lineage2 could have been one of the best.... but healers were so boring to play that they basically only got botted/2boxed.  For me that ruins things.  Also I didnt feel like the group mechanics were there.  MOB's were very static and seemed like they had absolutely no AI whatsoever....  I absolutely love the world though.

SWG post NGE-  They destroyed everything good about SWG without doing very much to fix what wasnt good.

SWG pre NGE-  I loved it... and miss it horribly.. but...  PvP was broken... glitchy as hell.  The lack of content made the game unable to retain most players.  The class system was amazing.  The crafting setup and concept were better then any other..ever...  The worlds were mostly dull and featureless.... just acres and acres of the same autogenerated terrain.  There needed to be a lot more beauty and scenery in the worlds.  Each world should have been hand crafted... not randomized with a few landmarks added in.  The pre geo-lab theme parks were terrible....  they were boring and un-inventive.... clearly not much time was spent developing them.  SWG would have been perfection if the world maps had some serious landscaping done, PvP exploits were fixed, and theme parks were high quality content, and more theme parks were constantly being added.  Housing and cities needed some mods too... most were just random empty houses strewn about and being used as storage sheds..... also they were almost all basically ghost towns.
