I will admit that while chat in Darkfall is fun, it is rare that you are going to get a straight answer right away. While there are people who do help, the vast majority of Darkfallers think that being cool is being sarcastic and rude. It's like a badge of honor to them, sort of like the /b/ mentality. The only way to tolerate this community is to find a good guild and ignore racial alliance chat and the forums. Otherwise, the people who play this game will make you hate the human race and happily dream for it's destruction.
Oddly enough, this comment could have been made about other major MMOs out right now as well. I think online anonymity brings out the worst in people....even on web forums.
From my experience, I would say that the LESS PvP a game has....generally the more mature and cooperative the community tends to be. Look at three other popular MMOs:
WoW
LotRO
EQ2
Of the three....WoW has the most PvP AND the worst community. The player communities of LotRO and EQ2 seem much more mature and helpful, more cooperative, and more apt to answer new player questions, etc.
The one exception, just from my own personal experience to this "rule," is probably EVE (which also has a lof of PvPers). But then again, EVE (like LotRO and EQ2) has a "help channel" set up specifically FOR new player questions. I think in regards to chat....that helps to curb the chat rudeness that you see in, for instance, WoW.
PvP is just competitive (as it should be) and I think it lends itself more to the trash talking thing.

I would like to add: the more crowded a channel/server, the more heat you can expect. Like the "Trade"-channel in WoW, or the german language channel in EVE with its daily nerd battles every evening.
The game was designed for little boys who want to vent after having their lunch money taken away by a bully. I am happy about Darkfall though, as it has drawn this demo away from other games.

Ah, it's for the insecure kids with low self-esteem looking to prove themselves by beating those they view as weaker than them up.

The kind of guy who sounds like he's choking on grape soda while eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, gasping for air with every breath and barely sputtering out his profanities because of the amount of neck fat constricting his larynx, the kind of guy who has to lean way back in his chair just to speak because of the pressure of the fat rolls choking out his vocal cords when he's hunched over his monitor with his ham-hock fists pounding away at the little greasy keys on his "gamer" keyboard. The kind of guy who says "noobs" but pronounces it "nooooooooobs" every single time, like the lowing of a herd of cattle at sunrise before they're milked.

Haha Sober Sam, you belong in Darkfall.
It`s true full loot mmo`s attact a special breed of players, and it was like this in UO too. The players in full loot mmo`s are highly competitive pvpers and will use anything to claim a win, even chats and forums. They reminds me alot of that Athene WOW guy on youtube. They are the gunslingers from the wild vest who claimed to be the fastest drawers.
I find those players very amusing, and I applaud those who finds unorthodox ways to grief in a mmo. I don`t like the normal strong kills weak griefing though. In WOW you had those who despawn the deamons in the hunterquest and those who attack raidparties on their way to MC. In AoC someone was using a horse to knock passing players from a bridge, and In UO you could lure players into your house and kill them. I also love the forumwars before and after a battle.
The great thing about Darkfall is that you have all those players and guild at the same place. You have the best pvp guilds from UO, AC, Shadowbane, AoC, WOW and WAR. My favourit at the moment are some guild called Goons. I have no idea what mmo they played before, but they made a thread on forumfall threathening smaller guilds to become their disciple or be destoyed. I like a guild that raise the bar so high, and I will join a clan that fight against them if I ever get into Darkfall.
This game has the absolute worst player community. Can't even ask a question in chat without someone calling you names.
I gave already up on community asking something in chat during beta, its not best player community out there.
You better join a clan that have same kind of social behavior and vison like you what you wanne see in Darkfall you prolly have better chance of getting some normal answers=)
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
After playing the game for less than a week I can say that I have not experienced a worst community, there is no manual for the game and the help section is of little help at all so one would think that asking questions to fellow gamers would be a way to help you during your harsh introduction.
however communication ( in my opinion) is one of the worst and most difficult parts of Darkfall. What ends up happening is that you ask questions in racial alliance which of course draws out a 12 year old pissing contest on who can make the most smart assed comment before their bed time.
I am currently having fun with the game but the community sucks. (prolly should have excpected this)

Sorry lad but I disagree I haven't been called names even once in DF. My clan is full of interesting people with average or higher IQ and I enjoy time with them. I don't really understand all that preaching about bad, immature community, that's not true at all.

No offense, and not to flame, but just because you ended up in good clan with a good community, doesn't mean that will be the same experience for everyone. Not every clan will have people with average or higher IQs, and not every clan will be full of mature members. While this person's experience may not hold true to your situation or someone elses situation, doesn't mean it won't hold true for them or others.
That's the just the nature of online communities. Some clans will be full of good kick a$$ people, and some will be filled with l33t d00dz and immature children, and some will be filled with a little bit of anything and everything. If you ever get the mind to go clan hopping, you'll see what I mean. And this isn't an issue specific to DFO (so I am not picking on DFO individually), but it's something you'll see in virtually every MMO.

WoW has probably 10x the population of both EQ2 and LotRO put together. WoW is considered to be Half/Half on PvP, and the PvP servers had always outnumbered the PvE servers by ALOT. EVE online is probably the best community I've been with; especially for a game that offers all of the flexibility that it does. { Mod Edit }
Just watch the youtube vids with voiceovers/running narration, or the live streams and you can actually listen to the type of people that play this game instead of just reading the words they type in chat.
People that never should speak in a public format, with either semi-mongoloid downs syndrome slurring of speech substituting the word "carebear" for most nouns and using profanity purely instead of adjectives. Just trying to listen to one of these slugs describe the most mundane of things is an exercise in self restraint, akin to seeing just how long you could stand reaching your hand into a trash can filled with dirty diapers on a dare before you yank it out in disgust. A typical snippet of his conversation: "**slurggh slurgg slurgg munch munch munch cough cough** Man I don't know what the f*ck these f*cking carebears want out of this game man **wheeeze**, if you can't f*cking see how great of a game this is from the first f*cking second you log in then you're just a f*cking carebear and you should either kill yourself or go f*ck yourself. *munch munch wheeze* I swear to god these f*cking noooooobs think they can come in here and start thinking they're the sh*t and swinging their sword around man but I f*cking just laugh man, these f*cking nooooobs weren't around in You Oh man we had sh*t going on like this from day f*cking one. *snort snort cough gasp* Now you see me in here and this is what it's all about man, look I got this sword and this is like a twitch game you know I'm not gonna have pity on you if I see you in here crying about getting your sack chopped off or...hold on I gotta fight this noooooob, yeah, see this is why I LOVE THIS GAME man, now I can just have no pity and kill this f*cking nooooob man (spins his character around to see if anyone is around then loots the headstone, clicking frantically on each item like he was a grandma at a Yarn Barn clearance sale) ok what was I saying, oh yeah this f*cking WoW kiddies come in here and think they can step one foot out of the town and then we send them back crying to thier moms, sucking their t*ts talking about "Mom, these mean Darkfall guys killed me then looted me mom...waaaaaahhh" That'll f*cking teach you noooobs go back to wow you carebear kids nobody wants you here, NOBODY *snurgle gorgle gorlgle cough cough*"
Another type of person that seems to populate this game is the smarmy, know-it-all uber-geek who is in his mid 30's, yet whose voice has not yet cracked and insists on vocally enunciating internet acronyms such as saying "Loal" out loud when he could have just laughed, or remained silent. The kind of person who pronounces each letter out loud in ROFL, slowly...each time something out of the ordinary happens or he disagrees with something, that something being anything and everything said by anyone not himself about literally anything at all happening anywhere in the game. A typical snippet of his conversation: "Ar Oh Eff El dude no f*cking way, get the f*ck off that platform man I can hear fighting around the corner I swear I hear mana missle being cast, let's go f*cking kill that noob dude, haha yeah, let's go f*cking lewt that dewd...hey, hey ninja62 get your a** over here man Double You Tee Eff are you doing man? Didn't you nub cakes hear me tell you that I hear Mana Missiles over there? F*cking Loal at you noobs man!"
I mean, seriously play these vids with commentary on youtube and around the net for a minute, then put the voices to the words you see in chat, you'll see I'm not even exaggerating in the least bit.

LoL so what you are saying is DF community like all communties has a "little bit of anything and everything" and that problem with anonymity over the internet gives people chance to behave badly ? So why are we discusing "bad" DF community again ?
Well at least in DF with one character per account people work on their reputation from the very begining.

Giving people the chance to behave badly due to anonymity over the internet, not a subject I was even broaching...okay...not sure how you read that in my post at all. I talked about different clans, and how each person, based on a choice of clan will have a different experience than others. I wasn't speaking of the Darkfall community as a whole, but each microcosm of a community within the game (ie - the clans). The one poster disregarded another poster's experience, and I simply pointed out that everyone will have a different experience based on their choices.
As for the community as a whole, it may very well be the case that they have more a$$hat$ than the average game. Don't know, cause I haven't played it, nor do I intend to. I just simply posted in response to an all encompassing statement that issues with a "bad, immature community was not true at all".
So, take my words as you will, but I do agree with you on the one character per account thing.

honestly id pay for it
Seriously...a biting commentary of the MMO population as a whole...it would definitely sell. I'd buy it.
Good attempt at proving that claim.
Sorry, I couldn't help it
For a second i thought that topic will be about MMORPG.com community.
