im a guy and i always play as girl chars, ive never noticed any special attention just cause my char was a girl. and if everyone played as whatever sex they really were, thered be way more guys running around which doesnt sound very cool to me. my only exception was orc, taurin,and dwarve women which i felt weird not playing as a male.

no the only extra attention ive ever gotten was multiple party invites. im not full of anything, if i was ever offered gold or gear i wouldve gladly excepted but it never happened. i think most guys would know that there is a man controlling most female chars considering half the chars in WoW were girls but far less women actually play the game. i guess test server 17 didnt have alot of guys wanting to cyber.
Wow, I can't believe some people actually think if you're male, you HAVE to play a male character.
What happened to role playing? Theses are RPG's we're talking about. I have never played a female character until a few weeks ago. I made a female character in City of Heroes because it fit the concept of the character. I enjoy playing her. I don't pretend to be female and if someone starts hitting on me, I tell them to give it up, I'm male.
What I think is really weird is not the person that makes a female character, but for those people that hit on and flirt with female characters online. Those are the weird people. They have no idea who is behind that character, yet they'll flirt and even ask you out on a date, without even knowing who you are and what you look like.
Now that's weird. It seems there are a lot of desperate people out there.

Consider this; one reason some women play male characters is to avoid being hit on. Therefore, people like YOU cause some women to play male characters which creates an even greater need for guys to play female toons. Why not treat each character simply as a PERSON instead of worrying about what their gender is? As someone else already pointed out - female players make up a small fraction of the in-game population anyway so you NEED guys to play female characters or there wouldn't be many female toons in the game world.
BTW, I'm not confused, bisexual, or a homosexual so what does that leave? A staunchly and permanently heterosexual guy who sometimes plays female characters in MMOG's. If I don't like the way a male toon looks or dances there's no way I'm going to spend months or years watching him run around.

You're making a big deal out of nothing. As others have already said - MOST people realize that chances are pretty good that there is a guy behind that female toon. The only time it would be an issue is if people start getting emotionally involved which they SHOULD NOT be doing in an MMOG anyway IMO. You never know what kind of sicko might be on the other end.

The second I logged in, I oogled an awed at her body parts for about 1 minute before becoming bored. It got old real fast. It's funny how a crowd like this, made up mostly of young "open-minded" people, is sometimes so conservative.
I usually play a male character, just because using emotes and engaging in any form of roleplay seems so much more natural when playing with a character of them same gender as myself. I am very glad that some men choose to play a female character and vice versa, however. I know, the number of women and girls playing video games is exponentially rising, but still, the statistics are grim for us men when looking at the general gaming populace, even in MMORPGs. The fact is, if everybody chose their real life gender for their in-game character, the servers would be full of male characters. This was somewhat visible in the open beta, especially on the Horde side, as orc, tauren and troll females were a rare sight. Come on people, this is a RPG after all, where's your tolerance? You don't have to be a "transvestite" to play with a female character, that's one of the most obnoxious statements I've seen on these forums.
One of the "defenses" the people playing different gender characters as themselves have used is that they don't want to stare at a butt-ugly male orc's butt when playing for extended periods of time. This couldn't be a more valid point as far as I am concerned. Staring at my male warlock's behind started to become a bit monotonous after playing for more than ten days, fortunately caster classes wear robes, so it wasn't a big issue for me. Thus, being a the pig of a man I am, I fully understand the reasons why so many Alliance players chose a female NE character.
I still don't see why so many people have to make in-game gender such a big issue, this is a game we are discussing here, a game where you can mercilessly slaughter your enemies, are able to drink vast amounts of alchohol, can butcher defenseless animals and do countless things which would be considered immoral in real life. Why bring gender up at all? I don't want to flame, but I'm sensing some insecurity here in the ranks of the "virtual bigots". Live and let live, be ready to accept decisions that might seem deviant to you. You don't have to understand why people do what they do, but starting a flame war here surely won't help you "win the fight".

It is in my opinion that your not gay for playing a female character. It just ruins the mmorpg experience. I am a guy(a very horny one i might add ) But do i play a NE female? No? why? its a game!! I play male characters because it makes me feel more in line with the game. Same with female main characters in single player games, there should never be a female main character in a single player rpg.
Heres how they make female characters in games.

So it was just natural for me to play male characters in mmorpgs. It's just part of me you know? i just cant get into the game as a female character. And what makes a mmorpg great? the social aspect. If i always ahve to worry about watching my mouth around everyone i just dont have fun. (which is why i solo 90% of the time and the other 10% i play with friends because i know whats acceptable) if everyone would just be more truthful itd be alot less problems. I play mmorpgs to socialize but since the ammount of people who lie in mmorpgs, the whole point of a mmorpg is the social aspect. And if i could change one thing in WoW it would be some sort of male/female/age verification and have it shown in the persons profile. That way there wouldnt be any crazy people running around in their fat shirts and fat pants pretending to be girls. I mean if there was some way to POSITIVELY tell what someone really was. All I have to say is.. "Welcome to the Internet.". Seriously, nobody is who they say they are on the Internet, the sooner you learn that the better. Its always been the same. Its the escapism - if you have a boring life, with no girlfriend, no job, parents that are alcoholics - then the Internet basically gives you a place to be something special. You can have Britney Spears as a next door neighbour, live in a 10 bedroom mansion with 25 acres of ground, and have Buffy as a girlfriend. Why? Because nothing can be proved. I was on the pre-release forum of City of Heroes and some girl said she was really some actress from the Buffy series, and the thread went on for pages and pages. I used to do that, but when you get older (you're obviously a teenager or early twenties) you come to realise that girls are people too, and you really don't need to talk to them differently. You talk to girls differently because you're trying to impress and attract them. Later in life its like, pfft, screw it, and talk to them normally - they either take you as you are, or they don't. No big deal. Plenty more fish in the sea, as they say.

The trick is to not get that socially involved - just chat about everyday stuff, talk about whats happening in the game, about so-and-so's quest... Why do you need to get to know someone more intimately if its highly likely you're never actually going to meet them? Just have fun, thats what games are for.
My thoughts, at least with the people who whine about girls being boys and vice versa, are that they're trying to fill the social aspect thats missing in their life. Maybe they're shy and retiring in real life, and find it easier to chat online where they can be themselves. Maybe they need that female character to like them, to feel that they ARE appealing to the opposite sex, if only by personality. Who knows? If they get all bent out of shape because someones playing a game the way they don't like, then there must be something wrong.
If you feel the need to group with girls on the specualation you might want that person as a girlfriend or just some cyber fling you should do the following.
1. Exit the game
2. Satisfy your need ( be it masturbating, or looking for woman at a bar )
3. Start the game when completely satisfied
If your sexual satisfaction is in place i have no doubt you couldnt care less if it really is a real female playing the character. You are more concerned with xp playing the game as it is.
If you feel the need to have people be honest about who they are in real life do the following.
1. remove your internet connection and play offline games.
You cannot change the morales to fit your standard. Ethics aside they will all differ on the level of brainwashing from either your parents, geographical location etc. We will never agree as religion and world views are so diverse so give it up.
Short , simple and effective for everyone with a problem in regards to ppl projecting alternate cyber egos into character of whatever gender.
Now you might say "i want to play mmorpgs i just want ppl to play with my morales". Well then you need to accept that what you think is wrong might be right in someonelse view.

To the poster i say go with it, do whatever you think makes the game more appealing to you. I dont see anything gay about this at all. I i see a person with the ability to see thing from a lot of perspectives ( a lot of roleplayers can ) which in my view is very mature behaviour.

I'd have to say that about 90-95% of the female characters I came across in OB were males playing females... Only a few, and I mean a few, I came across were actually females playing behind female characters. I know the results may very ALOT, but that's just from what I came across in OB.
It doesnt really matter if a male plays a female, it is only a game after all. Ive personally never played a female but I can think of one definite plus to it, arent you always nicer to the female characters in games?

if a real life male plays a female character doesnt mean he is gay or transsexuell.
in some games, special in 3th person view, some people like more to look on a nice female ass than on a fatty male one. just understand that some people just have characters as a "pet" and dont want to get identification with it. i personally play both, female and male characters and i never could identify me witha virtual pc game player model.
btw its laughable that still some teenies think they really could find some romantic in those games like in real life, hey kids grow up thats a game and u never know who is behind one character.

one thing i can understand for example is why Insatia would want to play a male chr, my girlfriend also plays, and she gets hit on like crazy if she played a male i'm sure this wouldn't happen.

IMO, a person's character in a video game is NOT a representation of that person. The character is like to an action figure that the player has control over. If you are the type to want to roleplay YOUR character, so be it. That's one of the many benefits of having freedom in a game. But DON'T project your playstyle on others who don't share your views. Not everyone plays out their character's role in the game. Play the game, make some friends, but if you want sex (cyber is just masturbation - I mean, be real) or a girlfriend then jeez, get out of the house, go to a club or a bar or a sports centre or something. As for me? I've played lots of female characters in lots of different games, and I'm as straight as they come. Why? Because I follow option C above. Its just a GAME!! Did you feel dirty when you played Tomb Raider? What about No One Lives Forever? Did you feel icky that you were playing a female? Did it offend your masculinity? Wow, I can't believe some people actually think if you're male, you HAVE to play a male character.
What happened to role playing? Theses are RPG's we're talking about. I have never played a female character until a few weeks ago. I made a female character in City of Heroes because it fit the concept of the character. I enjoy playing her. I don't pretend to be female and if someone starts hitting on me, I tell them to give it up, I'm male.
What I think is really weird is not the person that makes a female character, but for those people that hit on and flirt with female characters online. Those are the weird people. They have no idea who is behind that character, yet they'll flirt and even ask you out on a date, without even knowing who you are and what you look like.
Now that's weird. It seems there are a lot of desperate people out there.

Consider this; one reason some women play male characters is to avoid being hit on. Therefore, people like YOU cause some women to play male characters which creates an even greater need for guys to play female toons. Why not treat each character simply as a PERSON instead of worrying about what their gender is? As someone else already pointed out - female players make up a small fraction of the in-game population anyway so you NEED guys to play female characters or there wouldn't be many female toons in the game world.
BTW, I'm not confused, bisexual, or a homosexual so what does that leave? A staunchly and permanently heterosexual guy who sometimes plays female characters in MMOG's. If I don't like the way a male toon looks or dances there's no way I'm going to spend months or years watching him run around.

You're making a big deal out of nothing. As others have already said - MOST people realize that chances are pretty good that there is a guy behind that female toon. The only time it would be an issue is if people start getting emotionally involved which they SHOULD NOT be doing in an MMOG anyway IMO. You never know what kind of sicko might be on the other end.

It's funny how a crowd like this, made up mostly of young "open-minded" people, is sometimes so conservative.
I usually play a male character, just because using emotes and engaging in any form of roleplay seems so much more natural when playing with a character of them same gender as myself. I am very glad that some men choose to play a female character and vice versa, however. I know, the number of women and girls playing video games is exponentially rising, but still, the statistics are grim for us men when looking at the general gaming populace, even in MMORPGs. The fact is, if everybody chose their real life gender for their in-game character, the servers would be full of male characters. This was somewhat visible in the open beta, especially on the Horde side, as orc, tauren and troll females were a rare sight. Come on people, this is a RPG after all, where's your tolerance? You don't have to be a "transvestite" to play with a female character, that's one of the most obnoxious statements I've seen on these forums.
One of the "defenses" the people playing different gender characters as themselves have used is that they don't want to stare at a butt-ugly male orc's butt when playing for extended periods of time. This couldn't be a more valid point as far as I am concerned. Staring at my male warlock's behind started to become a bit monotonous after playing for more than ten days, fortunately caster classes wear robes, so it wasn't a big issue for me.
Thus, being a the pig of a man I am, I fully understand the reasons why so many Alliance players chose a female NE character.
I still don't see why so many people have to make in-game gender such a big issue, this is a game we are discussing here, a game where you can mercilessly slaughter your enemies, are able to drink vast amounts of alchohol, can butcher defenseless animals and do countless things which would be considered immoral in real life. Why bring gender up at all? I don't want to flame, but I'm sensing some insecurity here in the ranks of the "virtual bigots". Live and let live, be ready to accept decisions that might seem deviant to you. You don't have to understand why people do what they do, but starting a flame war here surely won't help you "win the fight".

) But do i play a NE female? No? why? its a game!! I play male characters because it makes me feel more in line with the game. Same with female main characters in single player games, there should never be a female main character in a single player rpg.

The guy saying hes a girl, girl saying hes a guy. Its all just too confusing and messed up.
And what makes a mmorpg great? the social aspect. If i always ahve to worry about watching my mouth around everyone i just dont have fun. (which is why i solo 90% of the time and the other 10% i play with friends because i know whats acceptable) if everyone would just be more truthful itd be alot less problems. I play mmorpgs to socialize but since the ammount of people who lie in mmorpgs, the whole point of a mmorpg is the social aspect. And if i could change one thing in WoW it would be some sort of male/female/age verification and have it shown in the persons profile. That way there wouldnt be any crazy people running around in their fat shirts and fat pants pretending to be girls. I mean if there was some way to POSITIVELY tell what someone really was. I wouldnt mind girls playing guys and guys playing girls, because that seriously doesnt affect me. Its just the fact that people lie and pretend about what they REALLY ARE. All I have to say is.. "Welcome to the Internet.". Seriously, nobody is who they say they are on the Internet, the sooner you learn that the better. Its always been the same. Its the escapism - if you have a boring life, with no girlfriend, no job, parents that are alcoholics - then the Internet basically gives you a place to be something special. You can have Britney Spears as a next door neighbour, live in a 10 bedroom mansion with 25 acres of ground, and have Buffy as a girlfriend. Why? Because nothing can be proved. I was on the pre-release forum of City of Heroes and some girl said she was really some actress from the Buffy series, and the thread went on for pages and pages. Some believed it, some didn't, but in the end it all turned out to be rubbish.

I used to do that, but when you get older (you're obviously a teenager or early twenties) you come to realise that girls are people too, and you really don't need to talk to them differently. You talk to girls differently because you're trying to impress and attract them. Later in life its like, pfft, screw it, and talk to them normally - they either take you as you are, or they don't. No big deal. Plenty more fish in the sea, as they say.

The trick is to not get that socially involved - just chat about everyday stuff, talk about whats happening in the game, about so-and-so's quest... Why do you need to get to know someone more intimately if its highly likely you're never actually going to meet them? Just have fun, thats what games are for.
My thoughts, at least with the people who whine about girls being boys and vice versa, are that they're trying to fill the social aspect thats missing in their life. Maybe they're shy and retiring in real life, and find it easier to chat online where they can be themselves. Maybe they need that female character to like them, to feel that they ARE appealing to the opposite sex, if only by personality. Who knows? If they get all bent out of shape because someones playing a game the way they don't like, then there must be something wrong.
There is a rather simple solution for everyone
If you feel the need to group with girls on the specualation you might want that person as a girlfriend or just some cyber fling you should do the following.
1. Exit the game
2. Satisfy your need ( be it masturbating, or looking for woman at a bar )
3. Start the game when completely satisfied
If your sexual satisfaction is in place i have no doubt you couldnt care less if it really is a real female playing the character. You are more concerned with xp playing the game as it is.
If you feel the need to have people be honest about who they are in real life do the following.
1. remove your internet connection and play offline games.
You cannot change the morales to fit your standard. Ethics aside they will all differ on the level of brainwashing from either your parents, geographical location etc. We will never agree as religion and world views are so diverse so give it up.
Short , simple and effective for everyone with a problem in regards to ppl projecting alternate cyber egos into character of whatever gender.
Now you might say "i want to play mmorpgs i just want ppl to play with my morales". Well then you need to accept that what you think is wrong might be right in someonelse view.
Just deal with changes you cannot control, adept , overcome.. just grow up
To the poster i say go with it, do whatever you think makes the game more appealing to you. I dont see anything gay about this at all. I i see a person with the ability to see thing from a lot of perspectives ( a lot of roleplayers can ) which in my view is very mature behaviour.
The ability to play different roles which actually contradicts the nature of yourself is not the mind of simplistic thinking nor does it need to reflect the sexual orientation of the person playing it.
I can see a lot of fun in playing a gay gnome for instance, think about all the responses my inner attention whore would receive.

Its a game nothing else for you who think its more than that should consider the social values of your REAL life a lot higher ( meaning you should get offline and spend more time in the real world ). MMORPGS will allways be escapism on a very high level.
